"But I'm a doctor." She said
"Are you his doctor?"
"Not his primary one."
"Can you get a hold of any family members or his primary doctor?"
"Yeah, I can call his doctor."
"All we would need is for him to fax over a copy of his file and a signed form saying his gives consent for any further medical treatments."
"Ok, I will call him right now."
"Good. I will be back in few minutes." He said leaving the room
"I'm a doctor, a surgeon, I should have known these things." She huffed as she found Bricks number in her phone.
It rang three times before he picked up. "Hello?" he asked
"Hey Brick, sorry to call so late but I'm at the ER with Wyatt and I need you to send over a consent form."
"Is he ok?"
"I'm pretty sure he broke his elbow climbing on his book shelf. But I have no authorization for them to perform and further treatment, including x-rays."
"How do you not have a consent card?" he asked
"I never thought of it." She sighed. "Can you just please fax over the forms."
"Of course, have you called Wade?"
"I can't get a hold of him. He's fishing up at Threemile Creek and he has no service."
"I know the park ranger up there, I will give him a call and see if he can find Wade. I'm heading out the door now to head to the office, those files should be faxed over within the half hour."
"Thank you so much Brick."
"You're welcome. Do you need company?"
"No, we're good. Thank you so much."
"I will let you know when I hear back from my friend about Wade."
"Yes, please."
Twenty minutes later the doctor came back in. "We got the forms and we will be taking him for x-rays now and giving him medicine for the pain. Then we will wrap it lightly and put it in a sling. I'm really sorry about all this. But I do suggest you get a consent card or some kind of authorization from his father."
"Thank you, I will be looking into it tomorrow."
After the X-ray they sat and waited some more for the results. Zoe's phone was ringing again with Wade's picture appearing on the screen.
"Hi." She said answering it
"Is everything ok?" he asked
"Yes, we're waiting on the x-rays now."
"X-rays? What happened?" he asked "All I know is Wyatt is in the hospital."
"He was climbing the book shelf in his room and it toppled over, he went down and I assume landed on his elbow. Like I said, we are waiting on the x-rays now."
"Ok well I'm on my way there. Hopefully I'll be there in like 20 minutes."
"Ok, just be careful."
"I will. See you soon."
"Bye." She hung up just as the doctor was coming in with the x-rays.
He put them up on the screen and turned it on. "We have a Supracondylar Fracture, which as you can see is a break right above the elbow and has been displaced."
"So surgery." Zoe said looking over the x-ray.
"Yes Dr. Hart, he will need surgery to fix this. Have you heard from Dad?"
"He's on his way, he'll be here within the hour."
"Awesome because we will need consent for surgery and anesthesia and everything. If you want and know the information you can start filling out the necessary forms."
"I know this kid like the back of my hand." She smiled
"Alright." He smiled and handed over the paper work. "A nurse will be in here in a bit to bring you up to a room."
"Thank you very much for everything."
"You're welcome." He smiled when he looked over at Wyatt who was now passed out on the exam table.
Not ten minutes later the examine room door opened and Wade walked through. "Hi" he sighed
Zoe jumped up and threw her arms around him. "I'm so glad you're here." She said
Wade rubbed her back and kissed her head. "I'm sorry you couldn't reach me."
"Not your fault." She pulled away and looked up at him with a few tears in her eyes.
Wade quickly brushed them away. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing, just you're here, I can finally breath. I was so scared."
"You did amazing." He kissed her again. "He is so lucky to have you." He finally looked over at Wyatt. "What's the outcome?"
"He broke it. He needs surgery. They'll most likely put either pins or screws, maybe a plate in to form it back together."
"That's my boy." He smirked "Always keeping us on our toes."
"Yeah." She sighed leaning her head on his chest.
Wade wrapped his arms around her. "It'll be fine."
The nurse came in and filled them in on everything that was going to happen in the next few hours. They would get him settled in the room and then the next morning the orthopedic surgeon would come and take a look at the x-rays and then by mid to late afternoon the surgery would take place.
"If you follow me we will take you up to the room." She looked at Wyatt passed out on table. "I could get a wheelchair?"
"I'll carry him." Wade said and careful not to wake him and not move his arm around too much he picked him up. They went up to the room and he just as carefully laid him in the crib.
Zoe curled up on the chair next to the bed. "I'm exhausted." She said
"I'm sure you are. It's been a long night. Why don't you try and sleep."
"Maybe." She sighed and was passed out in a matter of minutes
Wade looked at the clock in the room. "3 in the morning." He sighed and sat on the window sill. He picked up Zoe's phone off her lap and turned it on. He scrolled through her recent calls or texts to see if she let anyone know what was going on. The last call was to Brick and the last text was to him so he decided to let everyone know what was happening.
He started to doze off when he heard a noise coming from a few feet away. He picked up his head and saw Wyatt sitting up and looking at him. "Daddy."
"Hey Little Bear." Wade walked over to the crib "How ya feeling?"
"Elbow hurt Daddy." He told him
"I know it does. You need to be sleeping though ok?"
"Ok." He laid back down and drifted right back to sleep.
Wade went back to the widow and sat down, drifting off to sleep himself. He was awoken bright and early from his phone vibrating like crazy from his pocket. He had seven unread messages from Jesse, Lavon, AB, George, Lemon, Brick and Rose. He answered everyone back and placed his phone back, trying to go back to sleep. His friends wouldn't have it though. Everyone had a million questions so he decided to just call Lavon and have him talk to everyone else.
"Hey, how's the little guy?" Lavon answered
"He's ok. He needs surgery, which will happen at some point today."
"Oh man, that sucks for a two year old I'm sure."
"Yeah, it should be real interesting."
"How's Zoe doing?"
"She's ok I guess, sleeping right now. She broke down when I got here but I think that was just from the stress of everything."
"Yeah I'm sure. You want me to pass on the news to everyone else?"
"If you could, I'd appreciate it. I can't be calling and texting everyone every five minutes with updates."
"Not a problem. Just keep it close though right?"
"Yeah, you guys, Lemon and George, Brick and Rose. I'll call Jesse a little late. They were packing everything up and headed back to Bluebell early today."
"Ok sounds good."
"Thanks Man."
"Of course and tell the little man I say hi."
"I will, Bye." He said and hung up
Wade went downstairs to grab a couple coffee's for him and Zoe. When he went back in the room Wyatt was looking at him.
"Morning Bud." He said placing the coffee on the window sill
"Daddy, potty." He told him
"Alright." Wade helped him out of the crib and brought him in the bathroom. When he was done they went back outside.
"There you are." Zoe said yawning "How are you feeling Baby?"
"I hurt." He said
"I'm sorry. Soon it will be fixed."
They sat and waited for the surgeon to come in and he finally did around 10. He explained the surgery and everything they would need to know and do for after. The surgery was going to happen at 2 and he said he should be out by 5:00 the latest. After he left it got crazy with nurses coming in and getting Wyatt prepped and ready for surgery. They took him down to pre-op at around 1:00 and had Wade fill out all the necessary forms. Wyatt went into surgery at exactly 2:00.
Zoe was pacing the waiting room. "Baby, sit down. You can't pace the room for three hours." Wade told her
"I'm nervous, aren't you nervous?"
"Well yeah of course but walking back and forth isn't going to help. It just makes me worse actually."
"Sorry." she sat down in the chair next to his and put her hand on his knee.
"Everything will be fine." He said
"I know."
"We have to talk though." She said
Wade looked at her like a deer in headlights. "About?" he asked
"Us." She said and took a deep breath. "This arrangement isn't working. I know we've said a hundred times we're comfortable and whatever but it's just not working."
"You said that twice." He smirked
She smiled. "I know. But when they told me I had no authorization, I nearly died. I can't go on just being his Dad's fiancé in the eyes of the law. I'm his mom and we need to make it official."
Wade smiled at Zoe and kissed her. "Just tell me when and where. I've been waiting on you."
She smiled at him. "We're getting married." She breathed a sigh of relief. "We were dumb huh?"
He shrugged. "Pretty much. I know money isn't great right now, but we don't need a big fancy town square wedding with 1,000 people. I just need you, me, Wyatt and our closest friends."
"That sounds wonderful."
"Now does marriage automatically qualify you for rights?" he asked
"I'm not sure, I'll talk to George tomorrow. But I would love to adopt him, if that's ok." She said carefully
"Are you kidding? Of course it's ok. Like you said, you're his mom."
She smiled and kissed him. "I love you."
"I love you too."
After another hour and half the doctor came into the room. "The surgery went great, he's in recovery now. You guys can go see him."
"Thank you so much." Zoe shook his hand
"You're welcome. He did great."
"Thanks." Wade also shook his hand
The doctor nodded and led them towards the recovery room. He opened the door and Wyatt was lying in the bed drinking an apple juice with the help of a nurse.
"Mama, Daddy." He smiled
"Hi baby." Zoe ran up to him and kissed his head. "How are you?" she asked
"Seepy." He told her
"Well you can sleep all you want for the next couple days. He's doing ok?" she asked the nurse and looked at the monitors next to his bed.
"Yes, he's great. Levels are really good."
"Excellent. How long will he have to stay in the hospital?"
"He should be able to go home tomorrow night or Tuesday morning." She told them
"Awesome." Wade nodded "You're a mess, you know that Son?"
Wyatt laughed. "I a mess."
"16 more years with him." Wade chuckled
"Yeah. The next one better be like me."
"Crazy?" Wade asked with a smirk
"Haha" she mocked. "I was a perfectly calm, kept to myself kind of child."
"So boring?" he asked and then kissed her before she could argue
"Ewww" Wyatt laughed
