Thanks to MeInTheMaking for following!
In the Tunnel to head back up, there was an awkward silence between me and Hannah. I knew that she knew what I was going to ask, it was just a matter of time.
"Was what he said true?"
Hannah took a few seconds to answer. "In a way." She had almost seemed to have deflated, her bubbly personality gone.
"How, 'in a way'?" I said, trying to keep my temper under control. Losing it here and now
wouldn't help anyway.
Hannah took a deep breath and let it out before continuing.
"It's true that you don't have the best of reputations among Descendants. As you've guessed there's a lot more of us out there, only the Heads know the whole picture."
"So you knew about us the entire time." It wasn't a question, but it got answered anyway.
"Yes, and I'm sorry, but only Descendants of Guardians can join us, I'd have thought you knew that."
"I know that." I spat out, "What I want to know is why no one else bothered, and why no one told us."
I felt angry and betrayed by the group of people I'd come to accept like family. I'd saved all of them, twice, and they kept something like this not just from me, but every known Descendant of Jack Frost. I could feel a small stabbing sensation in my chest and I suddenly wanted to cry; even in this world I wasn't truly welcome.
"The latter I can't answer, the former was just reputation. And when the Heads announced that you were going to join us, it honestly divided all of us."
"How so?" I asked, still angry, but genuinely curious this time.
"Some didn't want you to join, said you weren't worth it and that the entire line was nothing but trouble."
Hannah wasn't looking at me, finding her feet fascinating as we walked.
"Others were more welcoming, more willing to give you a chance, but still wary. I know you didn't notice any of this, and attitudes did change just before the war. After you saved us. We don't think you're nothing but troublemakers anymore."
I nodded to myself, now looking at my own feet as we excited into the Main Cavern.
"Still doesn't excuse not telling us."
"We didn't want to risk a mass walkout. The battle before you came made us realise we needed more Descendants." Hannah and I were standing facing each other just to the side in the Main Hall.
I nodded to myself, thinking. I nodded goodbye to Hannah before walking off, still deep in thought all the way out of the base. Hannah didn't try to call me back.
I was angry, but not wanting to hulk out angry, just a quiet anger. Jamie was still in trouble though, this whole thing against the Descendants of Frost could wait.
I came out of the Tunnel, going over tactics in my head. I had no idea of the numbers, but I doubted that it was just Lupine, given that a number of wolves had been spotted. However, I'd taken on ten Descendants and their ancestor and came out alive. I could do it, I had to.
Jamie's life might just depend on it.
I rounded the rocks and saw Jack hovering above the lake, leaning back in the air and looking at the moon. He hadn't noticed me.
Jack would want to know what happened to Jamie I decided. I little doubt that I could probably get Jamie back on my own, but I should at least tell Jack, maybe even get help. So instead of going straight home to get my armour I went over to him.
"You're here earlier than usual. How have you been?" Asked Jack, hearing my footsteps and turning to look at me. He landed on the ice and leant on his staff, the very image of being relaxed.
"Fine, but that's not important. Have you heard about Jamie?" I asked.
"What about Jamie?" Jack didn't look so relaxed now, his fingers tightening on his staff.
"He's gone missing."
"WHAT! When did this happen!?"
"Last night, and I think I have a lead."
"You think?"
"Quite a bit north of here is a series of hills, bordering a forest. Apparently he's there, but it would take me a while to get there."
Jack folded his arms. "So you're asking me to help?"
"I figured you'd want to help whether or not I could get there quickly."
Jack nodded, more serious than I'd seen him in a while. "Yep."
He sprung up into the air and I went up on an ice bridge.
"North, right?"
"More northeast, and I'd better get my armour first."
Jack looked down at me. "Do we have time?"
"I don't know, but I'll be as quick as I can."
I skated home and got in through my bedroom window, using ice to unlock it. I pulled on the armour, picked up the compass and paused, looking at the little cardboard box. Just as one part of my world was safe, another was threatened.
"He'll be fine." I told the box, as if my brother could hear me. I always imagined that he and Jamie would get along. "I won't fail him like I failed you."
Yep, definitely going insane. Talking a grave was bad enough, now I was talking to a cardboard box!
I shook my head and left out of the window, heading back to the lake in record time.
Jack was still hovering in the air, having angled himself north east.
"Ready?"
I checked my compass and angled myself correctly.
"Ready." I said, managing to put the compass in my hoodie pocket.
We set off and I could feel the wind pushing me forward so I could keep up with Jack's speed. The world became a blur below, but I could only give it a glance to measure how far we'd gone.
Looking up I could see thick grey clouds above us. Not snow clouds, but maybe...
As if he could read my mind Jack said. "Don't even think about it."
I stared at the back of his white head. "How did you-?"
"I know you. Jamie's already in danger, I don't I could handle you getting hurt too."
I just stared harder, almost trying to burn holes in his skull so I could see what he was thinking. I could handle myself thank you very much!
I thought about how worried I was about Jamie and I relaxed. Jack must be worried out of his mind, and he was still acting calm. If I tried to form or control a snowstorm and it went as badly as Jack thought, the poor guy might just snap.
He was immortal, not invincible.
"Besides, you need to have ice and wind to able to do it."
"And I can only do ice, right."
It didn't take long for us to reach where the Descendants of Lupine had been captured. From there we found the hills and went towards them.
They were in a group of about five and Jack and I stopped and looked at each other.
"We'll be quicker if we split up." Said Jack.
"True, but the Descendants of Lupine... They don't always seem to act, human."
Jack snorted. "I can handle them! It's you who needs to be careful." He pointed his staff at me to make his point.
"I will. Let's go, we're wasting time."
"Okay, but we find each other if we find something, agreed?"
"Agreed." I said with a nod.
Jack nodded again and flew off to the left, while I angled the ice bridge right.
I skated around the hills, trying to find something that looked like somewhere Lupine's Descendants might stay. The longer I searched the more I began to believe that Pete had lied and I felt a combination of despair and anger build up in my stomach.
Finally I found something, a hole in the side of the hill that was hidden by a natural bulge in the hill. I skated closer and found that hole was large enough for a person to walk through.
I couldn't see far enough into it, and I had no idea if I was actually in the right place or not. It had been pretty hard to spot, I had only seen it out of the corner of my eye. So with that in mind I didn't dare go and find Jack in case I couldn't find it again. I felt guilty about this decision, but I didn't feel as though I had much of a choice.
I formed an ice cane and checked my armour straps in preparation. With that I walked in.
