Late that night I decided to go check on Jamie.
Taboo was dozing in my room, with strict instructions not to leave, and I left through the window.
I walked the whole way, wanting to give the Bennett household enough time to go to bed, since with my leg I couldn't walk very fast. My stitches had come out during the fight, so I really wasn't helping matters, I could even feel my pyjamas sticking to the injuries, despite the new bandages. However, I didn't think I could rest I knew for certain that Jamie was safe.
I was being paranoid, I knew that. Jack got Jamie home safely and I doubted the Descendants of Lupine were going to do anything. I just wanted to be sure.
It must have been two in the morning, but Jamie had been missing, so I was willing to bet the Mrs Bennett wouldn't have wanted to let her little boy out her sight for hours.
Let's ignore the fact that Jamie's thirteen, shall we?
The lights were off at the Bennett household, so I made my way round the back to Jamie's bedroom window. The loose board in the fence had been nailed back in place now, so I had to use ice to get over it. As much as I would love to have jumped it, that just wasn't possible.
Parts of it were boarded up, but looking up I could still see that a part of the board had been pushed aside slightly.
I went up on an ice pillar until I was level with Jamie's window, and saw that the rest of the board was still in place, with no frost.
Jack would have come back at some point I bet. He was as protective of Jamie as I was, so why was there no traces of frost?
I moved on to Sophie's window and found the answer.
Smiling to myself I looked through to see Jamie sleeping peacefully on the floor beside his little sister's bed. Golden sand, courtesy of Sandman, formed an image of him being with his family. I bet he'd been worried about them.
Sophie meanwhile, was dreaming of her brother the hero, fighting alongside someone against a pack of wolves. I didn't really pay attention to Sophie's dream, as cruel as that sounds, I was more focused on Jamie.
I managed to sit down on the ice, despite my injuries, and leaned my forehead against the window. Jamie meant a lot to me. He'd been the start of what dragged me out of the dark place I'd been in for so long. He'd been my first friend since I was seven, and... and he'd given me the chance to be a big sister again.
Jack probably felt the same way, and the boy now had two older siblings who could control ice, and he didn't mind. Like Danny, he loved it.
I tapped the glass with my finger and let frost curl across it, then I took a different finger and drew in an eight sided snowflake.
"They can't hurt you Jamie." I said softly, even though there was no need, Jamie wasn't having a nightmare. "You're safe. And I'll be dammed if I let them get you again."
My gaze gave the room once last scan and I got a better look at Sophie's dream. Jamie's partner seemed clearer, and for a moment I thought I was looking at myself. That couldn't be me though, Sophie didn't know what I did, must just be some TV heroine or something.
Satisfied that Jamie was safe I lowered the platform and slowly made my way back to my house.
The next evening Taboo and I were by the lake, waiting for Jack. I wanted to let him know what had happened with Lupine and his Descendants, since I hadn't had the chance to tell him the full story.
I hadn't gotten the courage to go and confront Nigel about what Pete and Hannah told me. I was still angry, but I'd seen Nigel in a temper, and it was something that I never wanted to see again.
My bandages had been changed since I'd gone back home and I was no longer wearing my armour, instead opting for my hoodie to hide the bandages. I had ended up going to the hospital to get my stitches sorted out, as Alec wasn't available.
Suffice to say, I didn't want to go back in a hurry, what with the medical staff getting very worked up by my unnaturally cold body temperature and supposedly paler than usual skin. It was interesting though, I learned that at room temperature my external temperature was 13 degrees Celsius.
Because of this however, it was now dark when I was waiting for Jack, the crescent moon hanging the sky like a sleepy eye. The peaceful and familiar scene of the lake helped me calm down from everything that had happened at the hospital.
But there still was something on my mind; Alfred's punishment.
I could handle the lack of Workshops next summer. I'll just have to not leave my room for a few months. Exactly what I did before I came a across HOG.
I let off a slight shudder at the thought. Alright Alfred, lesson learned, that was going to be hell.
Oh well, I'd just have to take a day trip to Canada or something. Or maybe stay there for the summer.
I chuckled to myself and leaned my head back against a tree trunk contentedly. Taboo twitched her tail impatiently as she lay next to me.
"How much longer is he going to be?"
"I don't know."
Taboo huffed and got to her feet, walking across the frozen surface of the lake. I was still trying to find out exactly what I'd done when it came to Taboo, although I'd made a promise to myself to never create another ice creature. Taboo was enough.
I looked to the sky and saw a familiar figure flying down.
"Jack!"
"Hey Jackie!" He said as he landed next to where I was sitting. He took one look at Taboo on the other side of the lake and sighed.
"You sure you can't do anything about, you know."
"Nope, sorry. She's here to stay. And she isn't so bad."
"She almost killed me when I appeared by the entrance of Lupine's lair."
"Almost, plus I didn't think immortal Guardians could be killed by a tiger made of ice."
"That's not the point!"
"I thought we were here to tell him what happened, not to argue." Growled Taboo from the other side of the lake and Jack made a comic leap into the air.
"It talks!" He cried, staying in the air.
"Yes, she does." I said, then looked at him curiously. "You're the only other person who's heard her."
That was actually a relief, I now had definite proof that I wasn't imagining Taboo speaking.
"Great." He groaned.
"It's not that bad."
"You have a tiger made of ice; someone's going to notice!" He cried, landing a little warily.
"And I'll deal with it."
"We'll deal with." Said Taboo, flicking her tail from side to side.
"No, you'll just attract more attention if it came to that." I said, getting what she was hinting at.
"Party pooper."
Jack smirked at our exchange, "Aww, she takes after you."
I rolled my eyes at him as he laughed.
"Anyway, there is a reason why we're here..." I explained what was going on with the Descendants of Lupine. Jack's face darkened when he heard about the attack on my parents.
"The low life..."
"I know, trust me, I know."
I finished up with the fight with Lupine and his Descendants, and Jack honestly looked
ready to fly straight there and pummel Lupine all over again.
"Calm down. It's over for now."
Jack's body relaxed slightly, but his expression didn't change.
"Jack, seriously. I don't think we'll be hearing from them for a while. They've learnt their lesson."
I wasn't entirely sure that was the case, but I had a feeling that Jack would just be asking for trouble if we went back and attacked. Let's not mention Alfred would probably kill me if anything else happened.
Jack relaxed properly and lifted his staff on his shoulder.
"Okay, but we've still the tiger to discuss."
"Her name is Taboo, and she's alright, I think."
"There's one way of gauging how alright she is."
"Okay." I said, folding my arms. "I'm listening."
He held out a hand and a snowball appeared. I got what he was after and we shared grins as I formed another snowball.
"What are you two doing?"
At the same time the two of us yelled, "SNOWBALL FIGHT!"
Taboo jumped away as my snowball narrowly missed her ear, slamming into her side instead, but Jack's hit her square in the face. She stood there for a second, blinking, then a grin in the form of raised ears, a lowered head and twitching tail appeared.
"It is on."
She bounded forward and her tail worked like a hand, forming snowballs and throwing them at us with pin point accuracy.
We spent a while like that, but eventually my injuries got the better of me and we had to stop. I almost fell to the ground from the pain, then managed to stop and lower myself into a more comfortable position.
"Are you okay?" asked Jack, concerned. "I know you got hurt by Lupine..."
"Yeah, it's healing..."
A knowing look crossed Jack's face and he crossed his arms.
"How bad is it?"
"Technically I should be using the ice as support, but I've taken painkillers tonight, so it's not so bad."
"Pretty bad painkillers if you're feeling pain."
"Must be wearing off."
I got to my feet, then my leg wobbled and I formed a cane to lean on, wincing.
In the moment Taboo bounded over, sticking her head under my arm to steady me.
Jack and I looked at her in surprise, and I abandoned my cane and smiled.
"Thanks Taboo."
"Not a problem, but shouldn't you be getting home?"
Jack and I looked at each other, and shrugged, well Jack shrugged, I tried to and winced instead.
"Would you like an escort home little lady?" Asked Jack with an exaggerated bow, acting
like a goof as always.
"Little lady?" I pretended to be offended. "I'm older than you physically."
"I'm still 300 years older!"
"And the tiger isn't enough of an escort?"
"Last time you went home from practice you got mauled." Jack was being serious now.
"I didn't have a tiger then."
"Just, humour me."
"Alright." I said with a sigh and a grin.
So, instead of flying off like he always did, Jack did actually walk me home. I guess some habits from the Colonial Period die hard.
Now, you wouldn't think that a full size tiger would fit through a normal sized door, but Taboo and I discovered a little trick. Taboo can change sizes.
Jack opened the door for me; I wasn't entirely sure why he felt it was necessary, I could do that by myself. As he did that Taboo shrank down to the size of a Mini Fairy and I helped her onto my shoulder. After saying goodbye to Jack I formed my cane and walked up the stairs for a good night's sleep, I really needed it.
