Chapter 13
Set a few weeks later
Rachel knew she had to tell lily about the baby now, she'd been putting it off for a while as she wasn't quite sure how she'd react and she certainly didn't want to upset her in anyway but she knew the Longer she put if off the worse things were going to get, so she decided to go up and see her now and have a proper chat with her about it now, while Rosie was at her friends house so it was just the two of them in the house as joe was still working.
She walked into Lily's room and saw her playing with some of her Dolls. This made Rachel smile as she always did find it cute.
"Hey darling are you okay?"
"Yes" lily replied
"Please can you put your Dolly's down for a moment love and come and sit on the bed with me"
Lily was a bit confused as Rachel wouldn't normally ever stop her when she was playing with her toys
"Okay" she said
She then carefully put all her dolls away before sitting on her bed with Rachel.
"Lily I need to tell you something quite important"
"What is it?" Lily asked curiously "I'm not in trouble am I?"
"No it's nothing like that, it's just ... Well you know at the moment you and Rosie are the only children in our house"
Lily nodded her head still feeling a bit confused
"Well in a few months time there's going to be someone else coming into our family too"
"Are you going to take someone else to come and live here because they haven't got a mummy"
"Well this person is going to have a mummy, I'm going to have a little baby love so they'll be in our family too"
"Does that mean that me and Rosie have to leave though because now you're going to have a baby that belongs to you and not someone else" lily asked her eyes suddenly filling with tears
Rachel felt bad hearing Lily saying this so quickly put her up on her knee
"No no, course not lily, the baby's just going to live here as well as you and rosie"
"So I'll be a big sister?" Lily asked a smile suddenly appearing on her face
"Yes I suppose you will" Rachel said smiling back at her "look you can already see the baby growing inside of me"
Rachel pointed to her stomach which was already getting quite big and round despite her only being 16 weeks.
"Is that why your tummy has been getting fatter"
Rachel laughed at this, she had noticed lily glancing at her stomach quite a lot recently so had guessed she'd noticed it getting bigger
"Yeah because the baby's growing inside" Rachel explained "should I lift my top up a bit so you can see properly"
Lily nodded so Rachel lifted the bottom half of her blouse up to show lily her stomach
"The baby must be really bit you've normally got a flat tummy but now it's all big"
Rachel laughed at this "well in a couple of months or so if you out your hands on my tummy you might even be able to feel the baby kicking"
"Does it not hurt when it kicks"
"Well when I had my other baby girl I could feel her kicking a lot but it never really hurt their feet are only really tiny remember" Rachel said feeling the tears form in her eyes like they always did when she mentioned her but she quickly brushed them away hoping lily hadn't seen
Lily then wrapped her arms around her and gave her a big cuddle which made Rachel feel all warm inside
"That's nice love"
"I wish I was the baby" lily mumbled
"why lily? Being a baby isn't much fun you know, they can't even walk themselves"
"I know but then if I was the baby you'd be my real mummy and joe would be my daddy"
Heading lily say this Rachel put her arm round her again and cuddled into her
"Sweetheart i promise I still see you as mine, every much as I do this baby, whether you came out of my tummy or not I still love you so so much"
"But you'll love the baby more won't you"
"No lily, I'll love you both the same"
"Can I really be it's big sister"
"Yep and I don't think it could get a better big sister than you" she said before kissing her on the forehead "anyway I think it's time we got you out your school stuff now don't you?"
Lily nodded so Rachel helped get her changed and into some fresh clothes
"What's for tea"
"Well joes not back till late and I think Rosie might have had some tea at her friends so it's up to you"
"Pizza"
"Pizza, that's very unlike you I thought you'd have chosen a salad or something" Rachel said sarcastically causing lily to giggle
"No problem darling, should I ring up now to order or are you not that hungry?"
"I'm quite hungry now"
"Okay"
Rachel then went downstairs and ordered their pizza, she liked ordering a takeaway occasionally especially when she was feeling really tired because she could never be bothered cooking
Once she'd ordered she collapsed onto her sofa, she knew she needed to be getting on with paper work but she wanted to have a little relax first so put the tv on.
A couple of hours passed and Rachel was beginning to get a bit worried because Rosie still wasn't home, she'd said to be back for 8 and it was now half past.
She had tried calling her a few times but there hadn't been any response
Rachel was just about to try her again when suddenly lily came downstairs crying
"Lily what's happened sweetheart" she asked
"I had a bad dream" she cried
Rachel scoped her up in her arms and gave her a bit kiss
"There look it's okay you're nice and safe just try and calm down for me"
"It was really scary"
"You want to tell me what happened in it then?"
"A big dog was chasing me and he was trying to bite me"
"Oh dear that doesn't sound very good then, but there's no way a dog would try and bite you in here though because we don't have any dogs remember"
"I know but in my dream we did and they really scary"
Rachel continued to soothe her for a while before eventually she seems to calm down a bit.
She was just about to take her back up to bed when suddenly the door opened and Rosie came in.
Rachel was pretty angry with Rosie now as she was quite a bit later than she was meant to be home at.
"Rosie where the hell have you been. Have you got any idea of the time" Rachel said sounding pretty angry
"Sorry" Rosie mumbled
"Sit down we'll talk once I've got your sister back to bed"
Rosie did as she was told and sat down as tears started to form in her eyes
Rachel went back upstairs and took lily with her
Once she got her tucked up she walked to turn the light off
"Rachel I hope the baby is a girl"
"Do you? Wouldn't you like a little brother"
"Well yes but I'd especially like a little sister so I really hope it is"
"I'm afraid that's one thing none of is have any say in my love" Rachel said laughing slightly
"Do you want it to be a girl?"
"I don't mind lily, I just can't wait to have it"
"Rachel how did the baby get inside you"
Rachel sighed not quite knowing how to answer this when the person who was asking was 4 years old.
"Well you have lots of tiny eggs inside if your stomach and when you're ready they turn into a baby"
"Oh" lily said
Rachel was relieved that she didn't seem overly interested in the whole baby thing
"Come on sleep time now, love you lots see you in the morning"
"What time will joe be home"
"I'm not sure my love hopefully not too late, and he'll be there in the morning"
"Can we go swimming"
"Yes if you're a good girl and go to sleep now though we'll have to get you some new armbands I've lost your other ones, anyway it is very late so sleep time"
"Night love you" lily mumbled before turning over and going to turn over to go to sleep
Rachel smiled before going down to see Rosie
"Right come on explanation about why you were so late please"
Rosie shrugged her shoulders
"And you think not giving me an answer is good enough do you?"
"For gods sake I just lost track of time"
"Well I hope you don't think that even begins to act as an excuse you have a responsibility to be back home on time or they'll be consequences"
"It's not prison"
"Yeah and it's not a drop in centre either you can't just come and go as you please there rules I expect you to abide by and can you cut the cheek to please"
"Rachel stop I'm not in the mood okay"
"And I'm not in the mood for you walking in a good three quarters of an hour late and giving me a load of cheek so you can ..." Rachel said but she suddenly stopped when she noticed Rosie's nose was bleeding quite heavily
"Rosie your nose" she said
Rosie out her hand to it and realised it was bleeding
Rachel quickly went into the kitchen and grabbed some kitchen role
"Here tilt your head back and press this firmly against it with this"
Rosie did as Rachel told her too and before the long it seemed to stop bleeding quite a lot
Rachel kept dabbing though as she felt a bit worried especially when she realised how pale Rosie looked
"Are you okay love?"
"I'm fine stop fussing it's just a nosebleed"
"quite a heavy one though"
"I got one earlier too at school"
"Why didn't you tell me Rosie?" Rachel asked
"It's no big deal"
"You look really pale though" Rachel said "you haven't seemed yourself for days though love, you've been a bit snappy and you've seemed a bit... I don't know washed out"
"Well I've just been tired"
"Have you not been sleeping properly" Rachel asked
"No I've been sleeping okay I'm just tired"
"I think we should get you into see a doctor because you look like you've lost weight too"
"I don't need a doctor" she sighed
"Well even if it's just to put my mind at rest" Rachel said
"Fine"
Rachel then went Into the kitchen and got Rosie a cold glass of water which she started sipping straight away
Rachel felt quite a lot calmer than she had done before and wasn't quite so angry with her
She sat down on the sofa and shuffled closer to Rosie
"So why were you so late huh?"
"No reason"
"Don't give me that, come on at least try and think up an excuse so I don't have to ground you"
Rosie sighed she didn't want Rachel fussing but decided to tell her because otherwise she wouldn't stop going on about it till she got answers.
"Just had a bit of an argument with my friends"
"Oh dear what about"
"Daft stuff"
"Well I still want to know about it if it made you late home and if it's got you upset"
"It hasn't even got me upset I'm not a baby you know, I didn't just get upset over anything"
"Well I know you're not love but everyone gets a bit upset if they've had a falling out with friend, I know I would because it's not very nice is it"
"It's just they started having a go saying I'd been really moody over the last few days and I was no fun to be around" Rosie said
Almost as soon as she'd explained tears starting forming in her eyes and escaped down her cheek, whenever she told people why she was upset it always seemed to get her even more tearful
Rachel sighed and out her arm around her gently, she knew how much things like that would upset someone Rosie's age and girls that age could be very unpleasant at times even without meaning to be
"Oh love I wouldn't worry about it, though it can't have been very nice for you when they were saying that"
"It was awful because I didn't know what to say or how to defend myself"
"I know that's the worst thing, but darling there just being silly okay, and after all everyone gets in a bit of a mood from time to time"
"I know I have been really moody recently and with you, I'm sorry"
"Hey it's okay, it's allowed when you're nearly a teenager, a teenage girl especially when you've got all these hormones rushing round you and it makes you go all crazy"
"It's horrible sometimes"
"I couldn't argue with you there love, being a teenager really can be a pain in the butt can't it"
Rosie nodded her head I response as a few more tears fell down
"There now don't you cry sweetheart dry your tears yeah?"
Rosie got some more of the kitchen role Rachel had got and dried her tears
"Now why don't you get into your pyjamas and we can stick a film on or something"
"That sounds good"
Rachel decided to out her pyjamas on too so the pair of them went downstairs and got changed
Once they were in there pyjamas Rachel got a box of chocolates for them to share and went downstairs
They'd just decided on a film to watch and had cuddled up on the sofa again when the front door opened and joe came in having just got back from work
"Hiya love" Rachel called
Joe came through and gave Rachel a kiss
"The two of you look very cosy there, I hope you've saved me some chocolates"
"Nope the pair of us have got our way through this massive box in under 2 minutes" Rachel said sarcastically
Joe laughed before quickly going upstairs and getting changed out of his work stuff before going down again and cuddling up next to Rachel on the sofa.
They'd been down about 10 minutes when lily came downstairs again
"Lily it's really late. Why aren't you fast asleep in bed" Rachel sighed
"I really need a wee, but the bathrooms really dark and there's scary noises in there"
"Darling it's just the wind against the window, it's fine I promise, go for a wee and then straight to sleep"
"No I don't want to go by myself I'm scared"
Rachel rolled her eyes and sighed over the last week or so lily had been quite bad for staying in bed overnight and she wanted to put a stop to it
"Right come on, but then you go straight back to bed promise"
Lily nodded her head in response to this
Rachel took Lily's hand but quite firmly to show she wasn't entirely happy about her coming down and led her upstairs
Once they were upstairs she took her to the bathroom
"Right go for a quick wee wash your hands and straight to bed"
Rachel waited outside while lily went to the loo and once she came Back started taking her across to her bedroom
"I want to sleep in your bed" lily said starting to cry
Rachel knew she was only crying because she knew this was something that usually worked on Rachel when she didn't want to sleep in her own bed but tonight she was determined not to give in
"Well you've got your own lovely bed to sleep in don't you, so I think you're going to be fine"
"No I don't want to"
"Lily you're not coming in with me end of"
Lily started crying even more because she didn't like it when she didn't get her own way
"Now stop that crying okay, you're going to be fine"
"Will you tuck me in through" lily asked
Rachel sighed but she wasn't mean enough to say no to this
"Come on then"
Once they were in her room Rachel helped get lily comfy in bed
"Now why don't you think of something nice"
"I can't" lily sobbed
"Well I'll tell you what if we read a few more pages of your book that'll give you come thing nice to think about won't it?"
Lily nodded her head, she always did love it when Rachel read to her because it made her feel all relaxed and sleepy
Rachel got in on the opposite side to lily and picked her book up
After reading just a few ages or so lily had fallen fast asleep
Rachel smiled to herself, pleased she hadn't given into her before going back downstairs for a bit longer
The three of them really enjoyed having some time together but by the time the film had ended they were all really tired so went straight up to bed.
Rachel woke early the next morning to ring the doctors about Rosie
After quite a long conversation and a lot of persuasion on her part she managed to get an appointment scheduled for 8:30
Rachel realised Rosie wouldn't be exactly happy about getting woken up early on a Saturday morning but there wasn't really a lot she could do
She crept into Rosie's room and eventually managed to stir her
After quite a lot of moaning Rachel did manage to drag her out of bed and she started getting ready,
When they were on there way to the doctors Rosie did start to feel quite worried
"Rachel what do you thinks wrong with me"
"I don't know love, that's why we're going to the doctors to see if we can get some answers"
Rosie started biting her nails as they pulled up at the surgery
"Come on sweetie out you get"
Reluctantly Rosie Walked out and followed Rachel
As they were walking Rosie suddenly slipped on a bit of black ice and feel right on her bum
"Ouch"
Rachel had to bite her lip hard to stop herself laughing
"Careful we don't want you having a trip to A&E on top of the doctors"
"It's not funny it really bloody hurt"
"I don't doubt, if I were you I might want to get up off the floor though"
Rosie scowled at her before getting up and walking with Rachel into the doctors
Once Rachel had sighed Rosie in they sat in the waiting room, Rachel always did hate this though because of how quiet it always seemed and it always made her feel nervous even though there was nothing wrong with her.
Eventually Rosie's name came up so they went through.
The doctor started by asking Rosie about her symptoms but she want really going into much detail as she felt a bit nervous so Rachel helped her out.
After running a few routine tests the doctor decided it was for the best if she sent Rosie for a scan and took some bloods.
All of this however was beginning to make both Rachel and Rosie feel increasingly nervous
