Chapter 4

.

The doctors told president Mason, it looked like he would survive. It would require months of physical therapy. They recommended he resign from the presidency. But George Mason felt he still had work to do. That was largely why he had fought so hard, his people needed him. Until the asteroid was stopped, or until impcat. As much as Mason didn't want to be the last president of the United States of America, he had to stick it out until the bitter end. He'd have to hide how serious this was from the people, and perhaps it finally was time to give up his cigars for good. The doctors said he could have visitors. The first was his daughter Mimi, she was in tears.

.

Mimi: I'm so sorry daddy.

Mason: I'll be fine. This equipment looks worse than it is.

Mimi: They're saying it was a Secret Service agent who shot you.

Mason: Yeah, Pierce. He was deranged, and know he's facing a judgement much higher than mine. Listen sweetheart, whatever they say, you can't blame your mother for this. She and I both made mistakes, God only knows what the conspiracy loons will say. We need to stand by each other during this.

Mimi: They'll probaly say I was involved.

Mason: I'm afraid we can't rule that out.

Mimi: They're right. I sent Pierce a text, telling him what car you were in.

Mason: What? Why would you do that?

Mimi: I was so angry at you for excluding Rebecca. I hoped that if Kimberly Allen were president, she would take my daughter. I'm so sorry for what I did.

.

The president looked to be in a state of shock. Then agent Molly OBrien entered with two other agents. They informed the president that they traced Pierce's text to Mimi's cellphone, and they put the handuffs on Mimi. She didn't resist, expecting she was about to be executed. Before they could take her away president Mason said something.

.

Mason: Stop. Let her go.

OBrien: Sir, we've found evidence linking her to the attempt on your life.

Mason: I know, she just confessed. She did it to protect her child, so I don't want her hurt.

OBrien: Sir she's committed a crime against the state.

Mason: If I have to I'll issue her an official pardon. For now I'm telling you, let her go.

.

OBrien seemed angry, but she followed his orders. Mimi seemed shocked and grateful. She was too ashamed to say anything, she simply walked out of the room.

.

OBrien: Mr president, letting her stay free is very risky.

Mason: You've made your opinion known. But this is how I want to play it.

OBrien: We'll continue searching her computer and phone, Pierce's too. Even if she doesn't give warning to her co-conspirators, they're likely trying to hide.

Mason: Hopefully the others will think it's safe with Mimi free. Every criminal makes mistakes eventually.

OBrien: We'll keep an eye out. This play of yours might work, but what if she makes another attempt on your life?

Mason: Pierce is dead, there are very few others with those skills. Besides she and her daughter already have a death sentance, it's called ELE.

OBrien: She can still be charged, after we un-mask her co-conspirators. Unless you actually do pardon her.

Mason: Just keep an eye on her until then. After we learn who else was involved, I'll deal with it then.
