"Hurry up girls!" Thatcher called upstairs. Meredith slowly got ready, as she remembers the conversation she had with her sister last night. She wanted to be there so badly and couldn't even think straight.
"So mommy is dying?" Meredith heard her sisters sobs as she told her exactly what was happening. She couldn't get a flight to Boston until Monday so she had to wait two more days to be with her sister. Meredith finished curling the last piece of hair, letting it fall back down from the iron. She messes with her pink ruffle tank top, fixing it. She had no idea why, she didn't have anyone to impress. She quickly slipped some white shorts on, along with white flip flops. She grabs her phone, making her way slowly down the stairs.
"Come on Lex!" Thatcher called after Meredith came down. Meredith was still extremely pissed about the situation with Thatcher but she couldn't handle that right now, not with the drama of her mother. After Lexie came down, they all walked over to the next door neighbors house. Susan knocked and a woman that looked about as tall as Susan, but she was skinnier than Susan and she had white hair unlike Susan's brown.
"Hey Susan," the woman greeted each of the Grey's, finally reaching Meredith.
"And you must be Meredith," The woman said, taking her hands and getting a better look at her. She quickly then pulled Meredith in an embrace, which had taken her by surprise.
"Hello Mrs Shepherd," Meredith said, pulling away from her.
"It's so nice to meet you, Susan has told me such good things about you," Carolyn smiled, inviting everyone toward the backyard. There was four kids playing all over the yard, along with two grown women who each introduced themselves. The taller, dark haired one was Nancy and the shorter dark haired woman was Lizzie, she seemed more friendly than Nancy did.
"So Meredith, how old are you?" Lizzie asked her, trying to make conversation.
"I am 17, I will be 18 in September," she nodded.
"So you are still in high school, I'm in my first year of med school," she gushed.
"Yes, so are any of those your kids?" Meredith asked, watching the kids.
"The little boy in the sand box, he's mine. Just turned two," she pointed to the little blue eyed, brown haired boy.
"He's cute," Meredith smiled at the woman.
"His name is Michael, my husband is suppose to be here but he had to work," she smiled, making conversation. Lizzie then tells Meredith about the other three kids, which all belong to Nancy which happens to be the oldest sister. There are 5 year-old identical twin girls, Sophia and Scarlett, and a 3 year-old girl named Penelope. She is an OBGYN at Yale Hospital in Connecticut.
Meredith looked around the yard, looking for a man that could possibly be Mr Shepherd, but not one man was in sight. She wanted to ask where he was, but didn't want to come off as rude.
"There here!" the girl that Meredith had seen alot that was the youngest Shepherd, Amelia, came outside. Amelia happened to be the only Shepherd, that Meredith knew of, to have blue eyes which must have came from their father because Carolyn had brown eyes like Nancy and Liz.
"Who's here?" I asked confused.
"My brother's, they usually don't come to the barbecue's," Liz answered. I watched the door as the tall figure came out, his blue orbs shot straight over to Meredith and she felt a cold chill all over her body.
"Uncle Derek!" The twin girls squealed, running to hug him.
"Aw, no love for Uncle Mark?" The man standing next to Derek said, the girls both moved away from Derek and Mark released the hand of the tall redhead that had also came in with them, hugging the girls.
"Oh boys, it's been so long since I've seen you," Susan smiled, hugging each one of them.
Meredith stood and watched as if it was in slow motion, everyone greeting Derek and Mark, Mark introducing his girlfriend Addison.
"Derek, Mark, this is our daughter Meredith," Susan introuced her, she stood froze.
"Nice to meet you," Derek said, holding out his hand. Meredith slowly took it, feeling the chills all over her body as they touched.
"Uh, nice to meet you too," She managed to stutter out. He looked amused at her reaction. She shook hands with Mark after Derek.
"Who's ready for some food?" Thatcher asked from the grill, Meredith didn't notice he was the one cooking. Everyone got their food, Meredith only getting a little as she didn't feel as hungry. Her stomach was still in knots from the interaction with Derek. Everyone talked while they were eating, getting caught up on life. Meredith would occasionally look up from her plate, noticing Derek staring at her.
"Everyone, you all know I came here for a reason and I have some good news to share," Derek said, everyone turned to look at him.
"As you all know, I do plan on going to medical school but as a requirement I had to find something to fill up my extracurricular activites, I finally chose what I want to do which has required me to move closer," He continued.
"Spit it out son," Carolyn said.
'Well, you are looking at the new teaching assistant at Xavier High School," His smile widened as Meredith's disapeared as her eyes widdened. Everyone congratulated him, including Meredith.
"That's great Derek! Maybe you can help Meredith then because she is going to start there this year," Susan spoke up at his eyes widdened slightly, him staring at Meredith.
"Yeah, I could," He watched her reaction, her face turned pink.
"Has anyone seen the girls?" Susan asked.
"I saw them go over to the house, I'll go get them if you want," Meredith said, picking up her plate that was now empty.
"I'll go with you," Derek said, standing up.
"No, It's alright," Meredith spoke up, throwing away the paper plate.
"You both can go, just hurry back so we can go down to the movies," Susan said, Meredith secretly wanting to roll her eyes. She put a smile on her face and turned around.
"Alright," She started walking toward the gate leading out, Derek following her quickly.
"Why didn't you tell me you were only in high school?" He says, finally catching up to Meredith.
"Because, then you would have ran for the hills, I don't want to talk about it now," She tried to ignore him, which was extremely hard because her lips were hungry for him. He reached out, grabbing her arm and stopping her in her tracks.
"Why did you think I would run?" His eyes seemed surprised by what Meredith said.
"Because, I'm only 17 and you are what, like 20? Isn't that illegal for you to date a 'minor'" She tried not looking at his ocean blue orbs but she couldn't resist.
"Actually, I'm only 19 because I won't be 20 for another month but the age of concent in New York is 17, so it's not illegal," He replied, his eyes moving between her eyes and her lips.
"Have you researched this or something?" Meredith watched his eyes, she knew he was staring at her lips and a part of her wanted to pounce on him.
"I knew you were going to be here tonight, mom told me that you were coming and I kind of saw you walk into the Grey's house. Mom told me that you were 17 because I asked her. I don't care how old you are, and if you are still willing, would you like to go out some time?" His smile came back across his face, that dreamy smile that Meredith liked so much.
"I'll think about it," She looked up at him and before she knew it, his lips were against hers while one of his hands were going through her hair and the other was on her cheek. His tongue brushed against her lips, asking for enterance and she allowed. She finally pulled herself away with every little thing she had.
"I'm going to get the girls," She breathed out and ran into the house. As she reached Lexie's room, she began to smell a pungent smell as she reached the door, opening it and both girls were giggling.
"Are you two seriously getting baked while I'm over there with complete strangers!" Meredith said loudly, causing both girls to try and stop giggling and failed.
"Are you going to tell mom and Carolyn?" Lexie asked, finally stopping gigging.
"You know I should for not inviting me," Meredith crossed her arms.
"Please don't, I've already been caught twice this year and Susan doesn't know anything about Lexie doing it," Amelia begged.
"I'm not but you need to learn to be more careful and Lexie, as your big sister I'm advising you to stop doing it before you become one of those stupid hippies that does nothing with your life," Meredith said, Lexie putting on a serious face and nodding. She walked away from the room into her room then returning to the girls, throwing them a small thing of eyedrops.
"Put those in your eyes, calm down for ten minutes, spray yourself with purfume and spray febreeze to get rid of the smell in here," Meredith soon walked out and back downstairs to where Derek was still waiting on her.
"Are they coming?" He asked she just nodded, walking back over to the Shepherd's.
"Where are the girls?" Susan asked as Meredith came back inside the fence along with Derek.
"They were watching some tv show, they will be over here in ten minutes," She answered, sitting back down along with everyone else. The girls finally made it back over, they seemed to be fine now. They decided we would all go see a movie except for the little kids, they were going to stay with Nancy.
Every one rode in two separate cars, Mark drove while Addison sat in the passenger seat, Meredith and Derek sat next to each other in the middle row while Amelia and Lexie sat all the way in the back row. Susan, Thatcher, Carolyn, and Liz rode in the car together. They got to the movie theater and decided to see Knocked Up.
In the movie theater, they all sat in one row near the back. The line went Thatcher, Susan, Carolyn, Lizzie, Derek, Meredith, Lexie, Amelia, Mark, then Addison. During the movie, Derek and Meredith would steal glances at each other and about halfway though, Derek reached over and interlocked his fingers with Meredith's. She couldn't help but smile at this action. They assumed that no one saw what was going on between each other but someone was watching their every move.
After the movie, they drove back to their house and Derek dragged Meredith over behind one of the bushes, making sure no one saw them. He pressed himself against her as his lips hungered for her taste. She quickly pulled away, terrified of getting caught.
"What's the matter?" He whispered.
"Yes," she looked up into his eyes which you couldn't see except by the streetlight.
"Huh?" He looked confused.
"I'll go on a date with you but you can't tell anyone, let me see your phone," she asked and he handed her his phone. She quickly put her phone number in his phone.
"Text me later," she leaned up, kissing him again and taking him by surprise. She pulled away and walked toward her new house, bursting with joy. She hadn't felt this happy in years, especially about a guy.
