Summary: Connected with my previous one-shot Uncle Adam, but can be read alone. Adam has been thinking about his relationship with Kim and where it's going. If they want to move forward they should meet each other's family. The only problem? Adam's mother was close to his ex-fiance Wendy and he is worried that they will hold the called off engagement against Kim.

Dinner with the Ruzeks
Adam had been thinking a lot lately, something he was sure if he muttered out loud Kim would laugh at. Ever since spending the day with Kim and her niece Adam had been evaluating his relationship with Kim. They had been together for nearly a year, something that shocked him when he took a moment to think about it. However, as their relationship had started in the secret shadows, it still seemed to remain there on some level. Even after they revealed their relationship in the department, they hadn't met each other's families.
He hadn't realized how little they knew about each other's families until Zoe stayed over. Sure he could tell you her parents' names, and she had met her sister, if only for a moment, but he had never met them and suddenly it was bothering him.
With Wendy they met each other's parents quickly. His mother was fairly upset when they called off their engagement. He had told his parents about Kim, but still hadn't brought her around to meet them.
Should they have met each other's parents by now? They would have to, especially if they were going to get engaged… Whoa, whoa, whoa, he stopped himself right there. When had that become a normal thought in his mind? It took him and Wendy years to get engaged, and even then it had stemmed from a suggestion from his mother the Christmas before. He himself hadn't come up with the idea, but a future with Kim seemed so much clearer.
"Ruzek," An annoyed Olinsky called again, "Are you with me?"
Adam looked up to find Alvin standing in front of his desk, "Yeah, sorry. What's up?"
Olinsky rolled his eyes, "Hank's sending everyone home; we are done for the day."
"Thanks," He muttered as he started packing up his stuff.
"You alright?"
"Fine, see you Monday."
Al walked away, as Atwater called out, "Hey, Ruzek. We are all headed to Molly's, you up for it?"
"Yeah, I'll meet you guys there."
Adam pulled out his phone as he headed out of intelligence, sending a text to Kim.
How's your day, darling?
He only waited a moment for a response, Almost over. Heading back to the station now. Sean driving. You?
Leaving now. Everyone is meeting up at Molly's. Meet me there? Invite Roman. After we can grab take out and head back to your place.
Sounds perfect. I'll text you when I'm leaving the precinct.
It had been a request for him after she was shot, and he was left waiting for her at the bar. She would text him after she had signed out for the day so he knew she was safe and on her way. Love you.
Love you too. See you soon. Stay safe.
Adam unlocked his car as he sent the last text to Kim. He let the car warm up for a moment as he called a number he knew by heart, waiting for someone to pick up.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Mom."
"Hey, sweetie! How are you?"
"I'm good. How about you?"
"I spent the day with Aunt Linda. Your father should be home soon, he took some day shifts this week."
Perfect, "Is he working the nights this weekend?"
"No, why?"
"I was thinking maybe we could have dinner."
"Oh, I would love that!"
"I was thinking I could bring Kim."
"Oh," Adam sighed as his mother went quiet, "That would be nice."
"Mom, I know you liked Wendy, but Kim is incredible. I think you will love her if you just give her a chance. I love her."
He had never told his mother he loved Wendy. Sure, at the time he loved her, but he loved Kim differently, more deeply. "I would be honored to meet her. How about Saturday at the house, I'll make something special."
"Thanks, Mom. We will see you then."
Adam felt great as he entered Molly's, quickly joining the others at their table and ordering a beer. They had been working on a few rough cases this week and it was nice to be let off early.
It was about twenty minutes later when his phone buzzed, Leaving the precinct now. Sean is busy so it'll just be me. I will see you soon.
See you soon.
Kim arrived soon after, greeted by the group with a hug from Erin and a beer pushed into her hand by Atwater, she settled on the seat next to Adam, "Hey."
He kissed her cheek, "Hey, darling."
"How was your day?"
"Good," He said as they sipped beer. "You?"
"Good, ready for the weekend."
"Me, too," He agreed letting the topic drop for now. They both happily talked with the group, laughing and allowing the stress of the week to leave them. It was awhile later when they left the group at the bar and headed for the parking lot.
"My place?"
"Sounds good," He agreed, kissing her, "I'll pick up Thai and meet you there in a bit."
"Okay," She agreed as they got into their separate cars and drove off.
Adam arrived at her apartment later to find her showered and in one of his t-shirts on the couch, "Food."
"I'm starving," She said as he set the food up on the coffee table as she went to get two beers from the fridge.
They settled onto the couch eating and letting some cop show play in the background. Adam swallowed, deciding now was the best time to bring this up, "So I talked to my mother today."
She swallowed, "Is everything okay?"
"Oh, yeah everything is fine. She invited us to dinner tomorrow night."
"Oh," Adam could tell she was debating in her head. Excited and nervous, "You think it's a good idea?"
"Yeah," He placed the food container on the table, she did the same. "Do you not want to go?"
"No, no," She answered firmly. "It's just. What do your parents know about me?"
"What do you mean?"
"I was the home wrecker. I broke up your engagement."
"First of all, you are not a home wrecker." Adam answered, "My relationship with Wendy was falling apart before I met you and we broke up on our own accord. We didn't start a relationship until after Wendy broke it off. Secondly, yes my mother liked Wendy, however, I've told her about us and she is excited to meet you."
Kim was silent for a moment but eventually nodded, "Okay."
Adam smiled, "It will be fine. They will love you. Besides, I think it's time we met each other's families, don't you."
Kim looked at him curiously, "You want to meet my family?"
"Do you not want me to meet your family?"
"No, but you met Michelle. My family can be difficult."
Adam pulled her closer, they hands lightly clasped, "What does that mean?"
"Your dad is a cop, he understands the job. My family does not agree with my career choice, much less dating another cop."
Adam nodded, at least they didn't outright hate him personally. "How about we have dinner with my parents and take it from there. I would like to meet them eventually."
"I want you to, I just want you to be prepared."
"So we will deal with my parents first. Besides, I'm already cool Uncle Adam to Zoe."
Kim smiled widely, "Very true."
Adam and Kim spent their Saturday relaxing in her apartment. Adam got a text from his mother, Dinner is at six. Can't wait to see you two, we are excited!
The text didn't settle Kim's mind. It took her awhile to realize she was nervous, she needed this to go well.
"I need to go home and change," Adam said after they finished lunch, "I'll pick you up at five thirty."
"Okay, see you then," She kissed him goodbye, waiting a full minute before panicking.
Kim had been in a few relationships, but few as serious as meet the parents, and none as serious as Adam. She needed to make a good impression. She couldn't call her sister for help, who she still wasn't sure what her opinion on her relationship was. She took a chance and called someone she trusted.
"Hey, Kim."
"Hey, Erin. I need some help."
It turned out, to little surprise, that Erin wasn't experienced in meeting the parents either. However, together they came up with a plan Kim felt confident with.
She wanted to bring dessert. She could bake okay but wasn't ready or in the right state of mind to make anything. She stopped at a local bakery and picked up some cookies before picking up a more expensive bottle of wine.
She took her time showering, wanting to calm down in the warm steam. She dried her hair and kept her makeup simple. She dressed in jeans, but with heeled boots and a dressier sweater. She had managed to calm herself down when Adam rang the doorbell later.
"Wow," Adam said as she opened the door, "You look beautiful."
Kim blushed, "Thank you." She handed him the bottle of wine as she grabbed the desserts.
"What's all this?"
"You can't go empty handed."
"They just wanted to see us," Adam argued, smiling suddenly, "You're really nervous."
"Extremely, can we just get on with this?"
He laughed, taking the desserts from her and kissing her, "I love you, so they'll love you."
"I hope so," She muttered, locking the apartment and following him to the car.
Adam held Kim's hand as he drove to his childhood home. While it was amusing to see the confident Kim Burgess so nervous, he wanted her to know that he was right here and tonight would be fine.
The Ruzek home was a modest three bedroom in the suburbs. Kim easily pictured a young Adam running around playing cops in the yard. Kim grabbed the desserts and Adam grabbed the wine, wrapped his other arm around her as they rang the bell.
"Deep breaths, you are incredible."
Kim didn't have time to reply before the door opened to reveal an older woman. She had the same color hair as Adam, and smile lines, "Hello, sweetie. Come on in."
The pair followed her into the house, Adam closing the door behind them, "Hey, Mom." He squeezed Kim's waist, "This is my girlfriend, Kim Burgess."
Kim stuck her hand out immediately, "It's nice to meet you, Mrs. Ruzek."
Her hand was ignored as Adam's mother hugged her instead. Adam beamed at his mother, who seemed to put her reservations behind her at Adam's confession of love, "Claire, I insist. Adam has told us so much about you. It is great to finally meet you."
Kim smiled, "It's nice to meet you, too."
"Here, Mom. Kim brought some wine and dessert." He said as he handed over the bottle before taking the dessert from Kim and handing it to his mother too.
"Oh, how lovely. That was so thoughtful!" Claire said truthfully, "Head into the living room. I'll open the bottle and meet you in there. Your father is already inside."
Claire left for the kitchen as Adam began to take Kim's coat, "You okay?"
Kim nodded as he hung their coats on the rack by the door, "Your mother seems really nice."
"You make a good first impression. Dessert and wine, well played, Burgess."
"Shut up," She muttered, feeling a little better. He grabbed her hand and led her into the living room.
"Hey, Dad."
An older gentlemen looked away from the TV, placing his beer on the table as he rose to hug his son, "Adam, my boy. And this must be your Kim."
Kim was once again hugged, "It's nice to meet you, Sir."
"Bob," He answered. "Sit, sit."
Bob sat back down on the couch. Adam led Kim over to the loveseat, wrapping his arm around her as they sat, "How's work, Dad?"
"Same old," Bob answered as Claire entered the room.
"Dinner is ready," She handed Kim a glass of wine and Adam a beer.
They settled around the full table, Adam keeping a hold on Kim as he helped serve the food. Everything was delicious as they ate. Kim was enjoying herself, but waiting for the questions to start.
"So Kim, you are a cop like Adam, do you work in intelligence?"
Kim answered Claire's question, "No, I was offered a spot recently but turned it down. I like working the beat for now."
"Best place to be," Bob agreed smiling widely at Kim. "Although, you seem to have some more exciting beats. Did you hear about the cops that were held hostage in the warehouse a few weeks ago? I'd jump at the chance to work with either of them."
Adam squeezed Kim's hand as he was sure her head was back in that day, "Kim was there, Dad. She and her partner were the cops."
Bob sobered, "You, young lady, are a great cop."
"Thank you," She responded as the table silenced again until Claire spoke.
"Your parents must be so proud," Adam nearly groaned at the way this dinner was starting off, "We are so proud of our Adam."
"He is great," Kim responded, leaving the comment of her parents unacknowledged.
"What have you and Dad been up to?" Adam asked, taking the questioning off Kim for a while. Claire told stories of her visit with her sister and Kim relaxed as she listened to the easy conversation the family shared.
"What have you been up to?"
"Nothing really," Adam responded looking at Kim before between his parents. "We spent last weekend babysitting Kim's niece, Zoe. We went to the aquarium."
"That's lovely, how old is your niece?"
"Zoe is ten, an only child."
"You have a sibling?"
"An older sister, Michelle."
"I have one sister, too." Claire said, "Best of friends and worst of enemies."
"Exactly," Kim agreed with a smile. This dinner wasn't as bad as she thought it would be.
When dinner ended, full of conversation and laughter, Kim offered to help Claire clean up. Adam and his dad went to the living room, leaving them in the kitchen preparing for dessert.
"I was worried about meeting you," Claire confessed as they stopped unpacking the dessert for a moment, the only sound was of the brewing coffee machine. "I don't know what Adam has told you, but I was close to Wendy."
Kim felt her stomach drop, "He mentioned it."
"Wendy is a great girl, but I think it got to a point where Adam was settling. He proposed because it was expected after so long, he wasn't as happy. He came home one day saying he had been brought in to work in intelligence, and then you started showing up in his stories. There was something different, I could tell."
"I didn't…"
"Oh," Claire stopped her, a hand resting on her arm, "I'm not accusing you of anything. When Adam told us the engagement was off he was sad, but not devastated. A few weeks later he tells us more about you and he looks happier than he has in years."
"He makes me very happy too."
Claire smiled, "I just want you to know there are no ill feelings here. Adam has made his feeling known, you are a part of his family so you are a part of this family and you are always welcome here. You don't need to be nervous or try to impress us here."
"Thank you, that means a lot," She allowed Claire to hug her before they continued setting up dessert.
"Kim is great," Bob said to his son as they lounged in the living room.
"I think so."
Bob chuckled, "You haven't been this happy in years. It's nice to see."
"I am really happy."
Bob sat up straighter, digging around in his pocket, "Wendy was a nice girl but you two weren't right for each other. You and Kim though, it works." He pulled out a small box, opening it to reveal a vintage ring, "This was your grandmother's, and if you want it it's yours."
Adam took the box from his father, "I've thought about it. It's still way too soon, but I know it will happen."
Adam slipped the box into his pocket as his father smiled, "We aren't going anywhere. She will make a great addition to the family."
"Thanks, Dad."
The four gathered around the table again eating cookies and drinking coffee. Adam's arm rested around Kim, he could tell she was relaxed in his home and it was amazing to see. The four talked for a long time, laughing and enjoying the night.
It was close to eleven at night when Claire and Bob walked the pair to the door.
"I better be seeing more of you soon, Kim," Bob said hugging her as Claire hugged Adam, "Always good to have another great uniform cop in the house."
"Agreed," Kim said with a laugh as Bob moved to hug his son. Claire embraced her tight.
"It was good to finally meet you and even better to get to talk," She kissed Kim's cheek before letting go and addressing both of them, "We need to make this a regular thing. I want to see you both back here soon."
"Neither of us can cook so I don't think that will be a problem," Kim said eliciting a laugh from everyone as they made their way out of the house.
Later, Kim and Adam were settled in her bedroom, "Your parents are the best."
"I told you it would be fine," He kissed her, "What did you and my mom talk about?"
"Nothing," He groaned and she chuckled before she kissed him again, "It was a really great night, I can't wait to have another dinner with them."
He beamed, "Good. One family down."
She groaned, "Don't ruin the moment. We had a good night."
"We did," Adam agreed as they shut off the lights. Adam wrapped Kim in his arms, his mind picturing the ring that was hidden in his jacket. Dinner with his family had gone way better than expected and their future easily formed in his mind as he fell asleep.
