What Matters

This is what he wanted: what he'd been waiting for. After the last attempt on the Joker's life that ended up with him back at Wayne Manor with his family he thought he could let it go. He foolishly thought he moved past it, but then the deranged maniac kidnapped Robin and all hell broke loose. Bruce had strictly forbidden him from leaving the manor which only served to ensure the opposite. Tim was a little worse for wear, but safe. The same couldn't be said for the second son of Bruce Wayne. Everything was red except for the scope view on the Joker's head. Nothing else mattered- nothing.

Dick made it to the ledge of the roof to see Jason holding a gun to the Joker's unconscious head.

"Jason, stop! I won't save one brother just to lose another. Not you. Not this time!" He stood as straight as he could despite the pain in his leg (compound fractured he'd guess).

"I thought breaking your leg and taking your grapple would be enough to keep you away."

"Jay…"

"Why bother, I knocked out father for God's sake!"

"He's okay Jason."

"It doesn't matter. All that matters is making sure he is dead." He gestured wildly to the lunatic.

"That's not all that matters."

"Don't lie Nightwing, it's not becoming of your moral image."

Damn it, Jason! Fine, you want to kill him, go ahead. I'll be right here." Dick planted his feet in spite of the unsteady ledge. Just then the Joker started to stir, finding his legs quickly.

"You heard the man. He wants to watch!" Jason punched the man in his gut bringing him to his knees. "But really, why haven't you killed me yet?" Jason repositioned the gun at the villain's head.

Dick was about to protest, but all he could manage to do was grit his teeth. He's been fighting the pain of his leg too long. Maybe it was worse than he thought, but he couldn't be concerned with that now. He struggled, but he couldn't stand anymore, his weight on a broken leg to much to bear. He crashed to his knees. He wanted to groan, but didn't have the time. The second his knees hit the ledge he felt it shift. He looked up at Jason, their eyes locking, a brief sad smile fell on Dick's face then just like that he was gone.

Jason didn't hesitate. He dropped the madman and dove over the edge of the building. He drew Nightwing's grapple as he swooped down reaching his brother just in time. As they reached the ground both men let out a breath

"He'll be gone."

"I know, it doesn't matter."
