Melissa walked down the stairs wearing her scrubs to find her son and his best friend sititng on her couch.
"Hey, Scott, I'm working a really long shift today, I need you to bring me lunch later, okay?"
Scott said nothing. He and Stiles continued to play Call of Duty on the tv.
"Scott!"
Scott's eyes grew wide as he turned his head over to his mother, who stood near the front door ready to leave.
"Yeah, mom?"
"I need you to bring me lunch later, okay? Around 1."
"Yeah sure thing, I'll stop by before I go to work."
"Alright. See you then. Bye boys." Melissa said, walking out the front door, shutting it behind her.
Five hours later Scott looked at his phone to see that it was 1:15. He was late for work, and he was late to drop off lunch for his mom.
"Stiles! I'm so late!"
"Bro you don't have to be at work until 1."
"It's 1:15!"
"Oh. Yeah you're late, man."
"I know!" Scott jumped up and ran around the house grabbing his things. He grabbed his wallet from upstairs and grabbed his keys when he came back down. He looked over to see Stiles sitting on the couch looking at his phone.
"Bro, can you do me a favor?"
"Sure, man."
"Can you take my mom lunch? I'm already so late for work."
"Sure but you owe me.. something. I don't what but something... Oh I know, you can set me up with a new girl."
"You're ready to move on from Malia?"
"Are you kidding? I've never been more ready."
"Alright sure. I'll see you later."
"Yeah, see you at practice!"
Scott went out the front door and drove away on his bike. Stiles grabbed the plastic shopping bag from the fridge with food in it and drove his jeep to the hospital. He walked in with the bag and stopped at the front desk.
"Can I help you?"
"I'm dropping this off for Melissa McCall? She's a nurse."
"I'll get her."
Stiles felt out of place. He stood there awkwardly looking around when he noticed a young girl with strawberry blonde hair walking around in a hospital gown. She had no makeup on and her hair wasn't done, but she looked really pretty. He couldn't take his eyes off of her, and she met his gaze for a few seconds until Melissa finally walked over.
"Stiles."
Stiles turned around suddenly to see Melissa standing behind the desk in her scrubs.
"Hey. Here ya go."
"Where's Scott?"
"He was runnning late for work so he had me drop this off for you. Hey, who's that girl over there?"
"The red head?"
"Well I wouldn't say it's red, but yeah..."
"Um... Lydia Martin. She was just admitted last night... She fainted and now they're running tests... Why?"
"She's... wow."
"Stiles, she's a patient."
"She's beautiful."
"Stiles... I wouldn't."
"Yeah whatever." Stiles said, staring at the stranger as he walked toward her, away from Melissa. He walked over to the pretty girl and introduced himself.
"Hi. I'm Stiles."
The girl moved her hair behind her ears. She stood there in her hospital gown, arms folded. She seemed uncomfortable.
"Hi. I'm Lydia."
"Lydia? I like that name."
"Thanks. What's a Stiles?"
"Well it's not my actual name. Just a nickname. It's basically a shortened version of my last name."
"Which is..?"
"Stilinski."
"Stiles... Stilinski?"
"Yeah. What's your last name?"
"Why do you want to know?"
"Because I think you're extremely, stunningly beautiful and I'd like to know your name."
She blushed.
"Martin. Lydia Martin."
Stiles reached out a hand and she did the same. They shook hands while Stiles had a stupid grin on his face.
"So do you have to stay around here or can we go to the cafeteria and get food?"
"Um.. I have to stay near my room. You can bring food to my room if you want to."
"I just want to talk to you."
"Oh.. okay. So my room then?"
"Sure."
Three hours later Stiles sat in a chair next to Lydia's hospital bed. She sat up looking at him with a tray of food in front of her, including a turkey sandwich, juice, and jell-o.
"I play lacrosse? I'm co-captain with my friend Scott."
"I've just.. I've never seen you around before..." Lydia said, stabbing at her jell-o with her fork.
"I've never seen you either. What are you involved with? Any clubs?"
"Um.. I'm president of the biology club and the debate team and mostly I just read. I love books."
"Oh nice. That's... that's nice."
"Yeah. I just really like how people can create a whole other world, entire people... entire lives. I think it's the coolest thing."
"I've never really thought of it that way. I don't read much. I always have practice, which.." Stiles pulled out his phone and checked the time. "Yep, I'm late for." He got up and grabbed his coat.
"Well.. It was nice talking to you, Stiles."
"I'd love to keep talking. I really would. I just.. I have practice and I'm already late. I can't skip. How long will you be here..?"
Lydia looked down at her hands.
"It.. depends on my tests. They're running them now and I won't know for a while."
"I'll come back after practice."
"You don't have to."
"Yes..I do."
Stiles ran onto the field in his maroon t-shirt and Nike sweats with his lacrosse stick. He ran up to Scott and started telling him about Lydia when Coach Finstock blew the whistle in his ear.
"Stilinski! Please enlighten me as to why one of our co-captains was twenty minutes late for practice."
"Well, Coach, I.. I was at the hospital visiting a sick friend."
Coach squinted at Stiles, who kept a straight face. He blew the whistle again.
"ALRIGHT, LIAM IS GOALIE, EVERYONE LINE UP AND TAKE YOUR SHOTS."
After practice Stiles changed into an orange plaid shirt and dark pants. He put his letterman jacket on over it as he talked to Scott, who zipped up his hoodie.
"So she's pretty?"
"She's freaking gorgeous, Scott. She's like five foot three? Green eyes, long strawberry blonde hair.. I.. Oh my God."
"Wow. I haven't seen you this crazy about a girl before. Not even Malia."
"Malia wasn't this girl." Stiles said, shutting his locker.
Stiles walked into the hospital and told the woman at the front desk who he came to see. He walked into her room and knocked on the door. She was reading a blue book. She put it down and smiled at him when she heard him knock.
"Hi, Stiles."
"Hey, Lydia."
"How was practice?"
"It was practice. It sucked as usual. I'm exhausted, thought I could nap in your bed."
"Sure that's-"
"Lydia, I'm kidding. Did you get your test results?"
"No... I can't stop thinking about it so I started reading this book again but I just hate waiting for it."
"What book?"
"The Fault In Our Stars... by John Green."
"What is it about?"
"This girl has cancer and she meets a boy named Augustus and he used to have cancer and they fall in love."
"I'm sure a lot of other stuff happens, though, right?"
"Yeah.."
"Is it a sad book?"
"It's... it's so sad. You have to read it."
"Seems like more of a female book."
"Well look at you being sexist."
"I am not sexist."
"Then prove it. Read the book."
"Fine. If you promise me that when you get out of this hospital we go out on a date."
Lydia blushed and handed him the book.
"Deal."
"I have to go but I'll see you tomorrow. Put your number in my phone and call me as soon as you get your test results." Stiles said, handing his phone to Lydia. She started typing.
"It might be really late when they tell me my results."
"Lydia, you can call me any time. Even if you're just scared of getting the results or death or anything. If you want to talk to me call me. But definitely call me when you get your results."
"Okay." She said, handing his phone back. He grabbed her hand and held it for a moment.
"I'll see you tomorrow, okay? Everything will be fine. I promise." He kissed her forehead and left.
