Inheriting a Draconian Mantle – Book 4

By Stargatesg1fan1

Disclaimer: I do not own any of the recognized characters or universes within. If I did…I would have ended the Inheritance Cycle with Arya and Eragon in love and entangled in a heated, naked, and sweaty mess in their bed. Harry Potter would have been smarter and taken every opportunity he had to make love to the gorgeous Miss Granger and when they were old enough he would have made her the next Mrs. Potter.

Chapter 9

Harry entered the palace and was guided to one of the many dining rooms. He admired the works of art and the décor as he went. Everything had been rebuilt since Voldemort's nuclear attack, largely with help from Potter Enterprises.

"The Queen has many things. If this place ever caught fire this would all burn," Saphira pointed out.

The dragon was resting on the roof of the palace. While she could fit in anyplace with the enchantments on her neck band the dragon usually preferred staying outside in the open air these days. Saphira was quite large by this point.

"I think there are wards against fires," Harry replied as he sensed the powerful wards protecting the palace.

"I wonder how she got wards put up," Saphira said.

"The goblins don't care who their clients are. For the right price they would install wards anywhere," Harry suggested.

At this point Harry arrived at his destination and was announced to the royal family. The royals all stood to greet the most famous man in the world and each wanted to greet him personally. Harry took particular note of the Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice.

"You should cover them. They would like that very much," Saphira suggested. "You could mount them right there on the table and they would be happy."

Harry rolled his eyes at his dragon's suggestion and replied, "I don't want to be responsible for killing England's Queen from a heart attack."

"I don't think the Queen would mind," Saphira assured.

Silently Harry thought the Queen might agree. Indeed Beatrice was seated on Harry's right and Eugenie across from him. The Queen was at Harry's left.

After the meal had been served and the servants had all been asked to leave the room the Queen inquired, "Where is Saphira, Harry?"

Harry didn't even miss a beat because he had already performed a telepathic threat assessment of those in the room before he had even walked in. The thoughts of the royals in the room had revealed their excitement to meet him and curiosity about his dragon.

"She's up on the roof. She can get a bit claustrophobic at times," Harry answered while setting a shrunken pensieve projector on the table and causing a holographic image of Saphira lying on the roof to be projected above the table.

Saphira lifted her head to where she sensed her partner's magic peering at her and projected her thoughts, "Hello small ones."

"She can speak into our minds," Eugenie said in surprise.

"Yes, and she can hear you too if you think back at her," Harry responded telepathically.

"Hello Saphira," Eugenie and her older sister Beatrice responded at the same time.

Suddenly all the non-magicals present felt the immense presence Saphira's mind generated within the room. It was so vast and powerful that they paused in their eating for a moment.

Prince Andrew broke the silence first, saying, "Mother told us she visited Mars and that you took her on a dragon ride. Some of us are a bit…skeptical. Do we have a reason to be skeptical?"

Andrew's question caused the others in the room to shift uncomfortably. Questioning the truthfulness or the sanity of Queen was not done lightly.

"You do not," Harry assured before allowing the hologram to change settings to show Harry and Elizabeth flying across Mars on Saphira's back.

Now that that bit of unpleasantness of verifying her story was out of the way Elizabeth wanted to make Harry feel more comfortable in her family's presence. She had asked MI6 to discreetly look into the past of Harry James Potter and had not found his upbringing at the hands of the Dursley family to be to her satisfaction. It did not appear that he had suffered abuse after a certain point in his life but before that point all bets were off. She had not missed the way he had acted around Eugenie and Beatrice or they him. Her granddaughters would do well to spend more time with the greatest man to walk the Earth since Merlin and Einstein.

"So Harry, where does Saphira's breed come from? I have read everything I could on dragons and nowhere does it mention dragons as intelligent as her," Princess Anne spoke up.

"Saphira is a hybrid of two draconic breeds. The first is one whose history was lost to the humans of this world before scrolls went out of style. The second breed is not native to this solar system or even this universe," Harry casually replied.

Several forks clattered to plates. Everyone present along the lengthy table was staring at Harry in shock, even Queen Elizabeth.

"I'm sorry Harry…did you just say that aliens do exist?" Elizabeth clarified.

"He did," Saphira confirmed for her Rider.

Elizabeth's mind processed the implications faster than her descendants could.

"You have access to technology far in advance of anything our world has even dreamt of don't you," the Queen asked.

"I do," Harry confirmed.

Faster than anyone could process on a conscious level an object left Harry's hand and sped towards Beatrice. The strawberry blonde's dinner plate was brought up and intercepted the knife. As the others processed the knife sticking out of the hand carved plate Andrew, Edward, and Charles each drew a concealed gun and had them pointed at the wizard within moments. Just as quickly, all weapons in the room vanished without a visible gesture from Harry. The knife flew back to the Rider's hand and he swiped the blade through his hand. The knife passed through his flesh like a ghost through solid matter.

"A test," Andrew surmised with a frown as he retook his seat.

"I'm sorry. I had to be sure. The knife would have passed harmlessly through Beatrice had she been unable to block it," Harry explained.

"What made you think she could block it?" Elizabeth asked.

"The moment I entered the room I felt you and your entire family react to my magic. I didn't notice it before when you visited me on Mars because that place is saturated with magic. I can feel something in you all slightly awakening when it feels my magic," Harry clarified as his eyes seemed to glow green. "I can see energy seeping into your limbs. I can feel the curse on you trying to suppress this power. I'm not sure what you are. This is a bloodline curse. They tend to get weaker as more and more generations pass. I can feel how weaker it is in the younger generations. Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are two of the people the curse is weakest in."

There was silence for several moments and then Elizabeth asked, "Can this curse be broken?"

"Perhaps if I have time to study it," Harry answered.

"What do you need to study this curse?" Elizabeth questioned.

"Regular access to one or more of the people affected by the curse," Harry replied.

"Eugenie, Beatrice, would you be able to assist Harry in this matter?" Elizabeth asked her granddaughters.

"Yes Grandmum," Beatrice answered aloud while Eugenie nodded her agreement.

"Harry," Prince William said, speaking up for the first time. "You said that Saphira is part of a breed of dragons that fell from common knowledge long ago. Could you elaborate on that?"

Harry nodded and explained, "Over a thousand years ago North America looked vastly different than it does now." The Rider fed the memories he and Saphira had of Alagaesia into the micro-pensieve projector. "This land was not much like the North America you know. It was called Alagaesia and was inhabited by humans, dwarves, high elves, and a few other obscure magical races. There was also the order of dragon riders. Dragon Riders flew magical dragons. At the height of their power there were thousands of Riders and the dragons they were bonded to. They were keepers of the peace sort of like Jedi. A member of the Order lost his dragon to one of the lesser violent races in Alagaesia. The Order leaders recognized madness in Galbatorix and denied him another dragon. Riders could harness magic in that time even though magic back then differed somewhat from magic today. Galbatorix stole the dragon of another and used black magics to bind it to him. He along with a dozen traitor Riders wiped out the Order until only two remained along with a few commonly known eggs. Galbatorix became a tyrannical king that dominated an Empire."

The micro-pensieve projector continued to show images as Harry spoke. Those watching could see what Galbatorix looked like along with the Empire.

When Harry paused in his speech at this point Elizabeth said, "Don't tell me that a teenager somehow became a Rider and overthrew Galbatorix."

Elizabeth had only been joking due to the similarities between this tale and Star Wars. Her family even smiled realizing she was joking.

"Actually, yes. That's exactly what happened," Harry confirmed. "I sometimes wonder if George Lucas didn't somehow hear the story of Alagaesia and change the story so he could sell it in modern times. Maybe he's something of a Seer and had visions of the past."

"But how did this teenager become a Rider and get enough training to overthrow an older Rider?" Charles asked.

"Eragon acquired the egg through a series of increasingly unlikely events and magical transportation. A surviving dragon-less Rider hiding in Eragon's village who turned out to be Eragon's father took him through some of his training and then the last elven Rider from the old order who was badly crippled and hiding in secret completed his training," Harry explained.

"At least Galbatorix wasn't secretly his father," Beatrice joked, earning smiles from those present.

"What happened to reshape North America?" William questioned.

"After Eragon defeated Galbatorix he thought himself too powerful to remain in Alagaesia. He planned on rebuilding the Rider order using a secret stash of eggs found in perhaps the last surviving stronghold built by the Riders. Eggs from that draconic breed could remain in their shells for many centuries through magic. After Eragon left the new leader of the Empire thought herself capable of gaining control of all magic users. They disagreed and a war worse than the previous conflict emerged," Harry explained.

"A war between magic users and non-magic users resulted in the reshaping of a continent?" Elizabeth clarified.

"Yes," Harry confirmed.

"And what happened to Eragon?" Eugenie wanted to know.

"He came here, to Britain," Harry replied, surprising everyone present. "Britain was a different place back then. This was just before the time of Merlin."

"The magical history records are very sketchy in that period," Anne pointed out.

The royal family had studied magical history as well as non-magical history extensively.

"That would be because of a war that was brewing around that time period. A race of very unpleasant creatures called the Sidhe numbered in the millions. Their hordes were warring with the other magical and non-magical realms. To make a long story short Eragon and Saphira wiped out millions of Sidhe and left the members of the Sidhe race crawling into another realm licking their wounds. Eragon and Saphira sacrificed their lives in this effort but not before Eragon had partially raised a son," Harry explained. "That son whom you know as Merlin was strong enough even when his father died to cast spells which would bind the magic, the soul, the memories, the very essence of his father and Saphira to one of the eggs Saphira laid. Myrrdin foresaw a time in the future when his father would return through one of his descendents. Merlin's children changed their name so as to not attract the attentions of their father's many enemies. Since then every member of that line has touched Saphira's egg even after they long since lost the knowledge of why they were supposed to do so."

"They changed their name to Potter, didn't they?" Andrew questioned.

"Yes," Harry confirmed.

"You are Eragon reborn," Elizabeth surmised.

"Yes," Harry confirmed again.

The room was silent as the royal family digested this new information concerning their royal guest and the enormity of his power to do what he had accomplished in the past and in the present. His sheer age and knowledge couldn't be discounted.

"Why are you telling us this? You obviously haven't made this knowledge common in the magical world or we would have heard of it through our contacts," Elizabeth said.

"I have analyzed the essence of everyone in this room. I would not have saved your lives from the nuclear maelstrom Voldemort unleashed not long ago if I did not think you were worth it," Harry replied. "I know I can trust you to keep what I have told you to yourselves. I made the mistake of leaving Alagaesia in its greatest time of need because I thought myself too powerful to be trusted to interfere and thought my job was done. I've learned since then that there is never such a thing as too powerful and that the job of fighting evil is never done. I'm even more powerful than I was in my past life when I killed millions of Sidhe. I'll need allies I can trust."

As he spoke Harry let his true form show itself. The breathes of every royal in the room caught in their throats. Every being of the female gender present instantly became aroused while every male being felt inadequate next to Harry.

"Even after Voldemort is dead there will be other challenges humanity will face. I, Eragon Shadeslayer, Treyis the Reality Bender, and Harry James Potter, will stand with humanity for as long as I am able. I hope that you will stand with me," Harry stated, his eyes positively glowing with an electric green hue that sent shivers down the spines of those who could see it.

Those eyes held knowledge, power, and resolve in such abundance it staggered the royal family.

"We will do our best to stand with you Harry," Elizabeth assured.

The Rider smiled and let his wizard form return.

"Sorry about that. I can't leave that form visible for long in front of those who aren't my mates or I might just get jumped," Harry announced.

"I can bloody well see why," Beatrice declared, Eugenie nodding her head adamantly.

Andrew was the first to laugh and it was swiftly followed by his father and mother and the rest of his family. The tension was broken and conversation continued while the royal family dined with the charismatic dragon Rider.

The temperament of the inhabitants of Hogwarts brimmed with excitement as June began. The Third Task of the Triwizard Tournament would take place the second to last week of school.

"It must be nice not to have to take the tests and study for them," Ginny told Harry as she and the others studied in the Mars facility common room.

Harry was going through several ancient martial arts forms while the others studied.

"Don't complain Ginny," Bridget chided. "I know just how much Toranth helps you during your tests. If anyone should feel slighted it should be us teachers. Of course I'm the only teacher who knows that I am in fact testing two minds instead of one."

"You don't object because Arimath helps you process some pretty complex Arithmancy equations without resorting to using a computer," Hermione pointed out.

"True," Bridget agreed.

All of the Riders gained a great deal of mental power from the bond they shared with their dragons. Traditional Pern dragons had a hard time understanding things humans could such as advanced math. Alagaesian dragons were better with human concepts but truly advanced math hadn't existed back then in great abundance. Only the elves had employed advanced mathematics around dragons. Saphira's breed hybridizing the two species was the best draconic breed that existed at understanding human concepts.

June the 24th, the day of the Third Task, dawned bright and clear.

"Good luck today, Harry," Cedric Diggory said to Harry as he stopped by the Gryffindor table for a moment.

"Thanks Cedric," Harry replied good-naturedly.

"Like you really need luck Harry," Seamus said wryly after the Hufflepuff Champion had left.

"Yeah, you saved the world and Hogwarts numerous times. This Tournament is really only between Victor and Fleur," Dean pointed out. "No offense," he added to the French witch.

"None taken," Fleur replied.

"Oh I don't know guys. I'm sure the grand finale of the Tournament will be challenging enough for me," Harry replied. To his Riders he projected, "After all…today is the day I kill Riddle for good if all goes well."

"The stars are singing of your victory already, my love," Luna assured.

This declaration from the blonde 'Claw made the Riders feel a bit of relief. Luna was very rarely ever wrong.

"How are you feeling about the task tonight?" Harry asked Fleur after swallowing a bite of oatmeal.

Fleur chewed her food and swallowed before answering, "I feel zat tonight will be very dangerous. But by ze time zat I enter ze maze you may 'ave already taken out ze most dangerous creatures."

The last statement was said with a teasing smile.

"That is very true," Harry agreed.

"With my overall standing as long as Victor does not get to ze cup first I will be in second place," Fleur added.

"I think Victor is only fast with his broom," Cho declared with a grin.

"I 'ave 'eard zat too," Fleur agreed with a matching grin.

Neville about choked on his food at hearing that.

McGonagall walked down along the Gryffindor table just then and when she reached the two Champions she stopped and said, "Mr. Potter, Miss Delacour, the Champions are supposed to congregate in the Entrance Hall of the school after breakfast. Your families will be arriving to spend the day with you shortly."

"Thank you for relaying the message Professor," Harry replied before McGonagall left. "Shall we go see who all showed up?"

"Oui," Fleur answered as she took the offered arm and walked beside Harry to the Entrance Hall.

Harry nodded in greeting to Fleur's parents whom he had already met after rescuing Gabrielle. Instead of going to greet the Delacours the mage instead walked over and greeted Sirius, Melody, Remus, and Emmaline.

"We would be there too son but that would look awfully suspicious," Lily sent to her son.

"Since we're supposed to be dead and all," James felt the need to add.

James and Lily were spending the day on Albion.

"It's alright. I understand," Harry assured telepathically. "Let me introduce you to the others," Harry said aloud to Remus, Sirius, and their mates. "Victor, Fleur, how about we introduce our families to each other."

"Zat is a good idea, 'Arry," Fleur agreed.

Victor simply nodded.

"This is my godfather Sirius Black and his fiancé Melody," Harry introduced. "And this is Sirius' best friend and a good friend of my father's Remus Lupin and his fiancé Emmaline."

The engagements were a recent development. Victor introduced his parents, Andrei Krum and Aneliya Krum. Victor was a good mixture of both his parents. Next Fleur introduced her family. Fleur's father was Jean Delacour and her mother Florence Delacour. And then there was Gabrielle. Gabrielle stuck close to Harry as the group decided to walk about the grounds. It wasn't the first time the parents of the Champions had been on Hogwarts grounds but it was the first time the foreigners had really had a chance to explore.

"You're lucky to have two of the members of the school's most illustrious band of explorers present for this tour. This band of explorers was known as the Marauders," Harry announced.

"Does 'zis have anyzing to do with ze Marauder line of products Potter Enterprises sells?" Jean inquired.

"Indeed it does," Sirius answered.

"Many of those products were invented during our school days," Remus elaborated.

The group set off on a tour.

When they arrived near the Whomping Willow Florence asked, "Who would want zat 'orrible tree on ze grounds of a school?"

Remus and Sirius exchanged significant looks.

"The only way you can get over your past is to talk about it," Sirius sent to his friend.

"Very few people know the truth about the Whomping Willow. It was installed to keep others from accessing a secret tunnel hidden in the base which leads to the Shrieking Shack. That is where I spent the full moon every month," Remus explained.

"You vere a verevolf," Andrei surmised.

"Yes, before Harry cured me," Remus admitted.

Remus used his wand to send a rock hurtling at a special spot at the base of the tree. The rock struck the targeted knot and the entire tree froze. Its branches stopped whipping about with deadly intent.

"An effective deterrent," Emmaline mused.

"It's time to go catch lunch," Harry said. "Let's head back to the Great Hall."

The afternoon passed quickly as the Champions and their families continued the tour. Sirius and Remus were able to liven things up with funny tales at some of the locations of things they had done at that location. When Remus used a micro-projecting pensieve to show memories of the incident laughter rang throughout the grounds and castle.

"'Arry, can we go talk?" Fleur asked as the group took a break from touring mid-afternoon.

"Of course," Harry agreed.

Fleur led him towards the Forbidden Forest and stepped inside the tree line. As soon as they stepped out of sight Fleur attacked Harry with her mouth. She pressed him against a tree and tried to devour his lips.

"I want you so much 'Arry. You 'ave 'elped me zrough all of zis. I want to show you 'ow much I appreciate it. I want you to know zat no matter zat ze tournament is ending I want to remain close to you. Very close," Fleur purred as she pulled at his clothes.

Fleur was feeling nervous about the events that evening and was tired of dancing around her desire for Harry Potter. She wanted him badly.

A very happy Fleur and Harry walked into the Great Hall at the start of the Tournament feast that evening hand in hand. This did not go unnoticed. Many had been expecting this development to happen much sooner.

"About time you two," Neville observed.

"Oui, I agree," Florence said approvingly from down the Gryffindor table.

Fleur had written home often enough throughout the year concerning the Potter wizard. Fleur simply smiled happily as she started to eat her meal.

"Welcome to the Harry Potter wand appreciation club, sister," Nym teasingly told Fleur.

"I zink it iz more of a broomstick rather zan a wand, a very zick broomstick," Fleur commented.

There was a guffaw from Nym and then laughter broke out among the females at the table who had mated with Harry.

"Too much information," Neville commented.

"Oui, I agree," Jean added from down the table.

Not long after the meal Harry and Fleur found themselves standing on the Quidditch pitch staring up at a fully formed crystal tube labyrinth.

"It will become see-through once you are in the maze, at least from the perspective of the spectators," Cornelius informed the Champions as he followed Victor to where the two Champions and other judges were standing.

Fudge was filling in for Bartemus Crouch Senior.

Professors McGonagall, Moody, Hagrid, and Flitwick approached the Champions and Flitwick stated, "We teachers will be patrolling around the Labyrinth on brooms. If you get into trouble that you can't get out of try to send out red sparks from your wand. If you are unable to we will do our best to ensure your safety."

The Champions nodded one by one that they understood. Then one by one the instructors mounted brooms and rose into the air. Hagrid's broom must have been carved from a small tree. Harry had never actually observed the Care of Magical Creatures professor flying before.

"If he falls out of the sky I think the Earth will shake," Harry whispered to Fleur, causing her to smile in amusement.

Fleur continued to smile as Ludo Bagman used a sonorous charm on himself to begin the event.

"Wizards and witches," Ludo began. "We are here to watch the third task of the Triwizard Tournament. The standings currently have Mr. Harry Potter in first place, Miss Fleur Delacour in second place, and Mr. Victor Krum in third place." Victor glowered at the reminder of his standing. "They will enter the labyrinth you see before you in that order. On my whistle you may begin Harry."

Bagman let out a short burst of sound from his whistle and Harry took off into the maze entrance before him. The maze at this point was a narrow tunnel that twisted and turned until several hundred feet in it came to a three-way fork. Harry took the left fork without hesitation.

"The other two have entered the maze," Saphira told her Rider as he climbed up the slope of the widening tunnel he was in.

"Noted," Harry replied.

Harry emerged from the tunnel into a much wider chamber that was a magically expanded pocket space. Immediately upon exit the Persian Manticore was upon the Rider. He had heard and smelled the monster long before he had entered the chamber. He rolled free of the first pounce of the beast and called forth Brisingr to his grasp.

"I haven't eaten wizard in so very long," the manticore called as it chased after Harry.

The hybrid creature's tale fired poisonous spines at Harry. The wizard ran towards the nearest wall of the long rectangular chamber and ran straight up the wall, defying gravity with his flight powers. He did a back flip as the manticore charged towards the wall, attempting to skewer the smaller being with a barbed tail.

"And you won't be eating wizard ever again," Harry promised as his back flip allowed him to cleave off the manticore's tail mid flight.

The creature roared in agony as it lost its appendage. Harry landed on the floor and waited as the manticore turned and charged at him with fury. The large beast easily weighed a ton and it hurtled through the air at him. Mid leap there was the flash of a blade and the manticore's head fell from its shoulders. The beast's corpse hit the illusion of Harry and dispersed the magic. The real mage materialized from his invisible state still floating in the air.

Harry could hear Ludo Bagman announcing outside the one way see-through crystal structure.

"Oh-ho, see that folks. Harry Potter just neatly bested a Persian manticore, one of the most deadly magical beasts in all the world," Bagman pointed out. "Meanwhile Fleur Delacour faces off against a Greek Minotaur and Victor Krum meets a Himalayan Ice Yeti."

"How is Fleur doing?" Harry asked.

"See for yourself," Saphira replied, turning her vision to the section of the crystal maze Fleur was in even as her Rider flew upwards through the opening that had just revealed itself in the ceiling of the chamber after the manticore had been bested.

The dragon's gaze pierced the invisibility that Arya and Dianna were under only because the dragons and Riders were keyed into those enchantments to nullify its effects on them. The two Queens were following behind Fleur helping her out when necessary but Fleur was dealing with the incredibly strong minotaur fairly well on her own.

"Good," Harry mused as he flew vertically for quite some time.

The task's creators had obviously been very liberal with their space expansion charms. The maze was far bigger on the inside than it was on the outside. Harry came out of the tunnel and abruptly he was hurtled upwards as gravity was reversed and he was used to fighting gravity in the wrong direction. Harry was thrown right into a thick patch of devil's snare while several acromantulas rushed him.

"Brisingr," Harry called while channeling his will into the blade still held in his hand.

The sword caught fire at its true name and burned through the devil's snare as effectively as a lightsaber. The first spider of the half dozen in the room was dismembered before it ever completed his leap. Now that he knew how to compensate for gravity in this inverted room the Rider rose into the air and spun in place as three more spiders leapt at him. His fiery sword blazed hotter and sliced up the spiders flying at him. One managed to latch onto Harry's leg with its pincer but the physiology of his true form was tougher than the spider was used to. It found itself unable to break his skin much less his bones before it died. The remaining two arachnids halted as they rushed their enemy and chittered angrily at him. Before they could do anything else Harry drew the Elder wand and sent two blasts of crackling blue energy at them with unerring accuracy. The crackling energy disintegrated the magical spiders without any fanfare. Bagman announced the act as the use of an impressive but unknown spell.

"Unknown in this time maybe," Harry pointed out.
