I finally figured out where I wanted to go with this story. Updates should be occurring more often now that I have a plan. Thank you for your reviews, likes and favorites. They are much appreciated and loved. This is a bit of a filler chapter; setting up what will happen in the story. Enjoy!
Felicity woke up the next morning with her head resting on Oliver's shoulder. His arm was wrapped around her shoulders and his head rested on top of hers. She took a moment to memorize this moment. He was warm and firm. He snored lightly and he smelled incredible.
Neither had meant to fall asleep in the basement of Verdant. After Oliver told her what happened last night, she knew she couldn't leave him alone. She hadn't been sure what he would do if he was left alone. They sat in silence for almost an hour before he began talking.
Last Night
"I know I can't save everyone," Oliver began, "but that kid...I should of been able to save him."
Felicity desperately wished she could make him lose the despondent look in his eyes. He carried the weight of all that was wrong in Starling on his shoulders. He fought to make the city a better place every day.
All she could do was be there for him; even if it just involved sitting next to him on the couch. She tentatively brought her hand down to his in comfort. "Oliver, you did not purposely set out tonight for that boy to be killed. The fault lies with Matheus. He killed the boy and we will make sure he doesn't get away with it."
Oliver tightened his hand around hers, as if gaining strength from that simple contact. "No, he won't get away with it."
She reached up with her other hand and cupped his face. "Then let's focus on making sure he won't ever walk out of prison."
Present
Felicity sighed. She wasn't sure how much of what she said got through to him. Hopefully everything. However, he was still believed he didn't deserve any type of happiness and that anything that went wrong in the city was his fault.
Looking over at her phone, which was miraculously still in her hand, she saw that they needed to get up. He needed to put on his public face, Oliver Queen, CEO of Queen Consolidated. She had to go home, take a shower and attempt to get a certain CEO to focus on his day work.
She tried moving out of his arms, but that just caused him to hold her tighter. "Oliver," she said softly, attempting not to startle him awake. He just nuzzled her hair in response at her attempt. She consciously ignored the flutter that nuzzle caused.
"Oliver," she said a bit more loudly.
His eyes popped open, clouded over in confusion for a moment. "Felicity?"
She smiled. "Yes Felicity. Your IT girl and EA extraordinaire."
Oliver chuckled as he reached up to clear some of the sleep from his eyes. "What time is it?"
Felicity took the opportunity to hop up from the couch and stretch. "Time for work."
He groaned. Work was the last thing on his mind. "There's no way for me not to go into work?"
She chuckled and shook her head. She pulled up his schedule on her phone and showed him how booked his day was. "You have three important meetings today plus a conference call with Lancaster at four. There's no time for a day off."
Later That Day
By lunch, Oliver was ready to leave Queen Consolidated. He could feel a tension headache developing and he hadn't eaten anything since early that morning. He had an hour until his next meeting. Loosening his tie, he leaned his head back and closed his eyes. The boys terrified eyes flashed through his mind. Matheus smug look before he shot him with an arrow. Both images made him want to shoot Matheus with an arrow again. Preferably through the heart.
There was a knock at his door, pulling him from his thoughts. He sat up and saw Felicity at his door, holding a bag from a diner around the corner.
Felicity pushed the door open and walked over to his desk. She placed the bag of food in front of him and smiled. "Lunch. A big juicy hamburger and fries."
Oliver chuckled. "Thank you. Did you get one for yourself?"
"Of course. Digg treated me and we ate there."
Felicity's tablet, which was never far away from her beeped. Oliver knew she had alerts set up so that she would automatically get them and alert Team Arrow.
Oliver took a bite out of his cheeseburger and waited for her to tell him what was up. When she pulled up in the information, he saw her eyes widen in surprise. Swallowing, he asked. "What's wrong?"
She looked over at him, troubled. "You said you heard police sirens when you left Matheus last night?
He nodded his head. Felicity bit her lower lip in nervousness. "Apparently Matheus men dropped him off at the hospital last night. He wasn't picked up where you left him."
Putting down his cheeseburger, he attempted to process what she was saying. If he wasn't picked up by the police, then what happened to the boy?
"Apparently Matheus said you attacked him without cause."
Oliver's jaw clenched, the only outward sign of his rage. "Without cause?"
Reading through the rest of the news article, Felicity knew he wasn't going to be happy with what she had to tell him. In fact, she may need to call Digg. "There's no mention of the boy."
Pushing his cheeseburger away, he looked down at his hands and saw they were shaking. It took every ounce of his control not to run out of his office and track down Matheus.
Felicity sent a quick text to Digg to get to Verdant right away. She wasn't sure if she would be enough to keep Oliver from taking off after Matheus. Reaching out and covering his clenched hands with her own, she gave him a reassuring smile. "We'll get him. We'll find the evidence."
Oliver looked at her hands over his and felt some calm enter the red haze that had gone over his eyes. She calmed him. She kept him from being a cold-hearted killer. "I know," he said gruffly.
Letting go of his hands, Felicity began backing out of his office. "I'll see if I can get ahold of the police report. Maybe there were surveillance cameras in the area." She shut the door behind her, already planning how she was going to attempt to keep Oliver occupied. She remembered last night and how devastated he was. He was broken and she knew, despite a few smiles from him today, he wasn't over the boy's death. She wasn't sure if he ever would be. Sitting at her desk, she took a moment to lay her head down and think.
If the police didn't know about the boy's death, then where was his body? Was some mother in the Glades, worried and wondering where her son was? Did Matheus and his gang get rid of the body?
Sighing, she looked up at her computer screen, ready to start her search. Oliver would pursue Matheus until he faced justice. She just hoped it wasn't at the end of an arrow.
