"Tell her how you must've lost your mind
When you left her all alone
And never told her why
And that's how it works
That's how you lost the girl."
~How You Get The Girl by Taylor Swift
The cab pulled up to a corner of a street, and a couple, a black haired man and a brown haired woman, holding hands. If you looked closely, you can see that the happiness in the eyes of the woman. Her smile a genuine one and same with the man.
"I had fun tonight, Rob." The woman said.
"Yes, well... you needed it. Maybe we should do it again?" Rob, the man, said as he smiled sheepishly.
"Sure... Well, see you tomorrow, Rob."
"See you tomorrow, Molls." Rob said, before giving her a shy peck on the cheek and getting in the cab. Molly walked up the steps towards her apartment building, and she stopped when she heard a certain baritone voice.
"Molly," The voice said. Molly turned to see Sherlock standing there, hands in his pockets. Just standing there. "Hello, Molly." He said.
"Sherlock. What are you doing here?" She asked, the tone in her voice suggesting that she's not as excited in seeing him than she used to.
"I just... I just want... I just wanted to see you." Sherlock told her, smiling sheepishly. Molly would've found it adorable, if they were in another situation.
"Now that you've seen me... I-"
"Who was that man?" Sherlock being Sherlock, he didn't need to ask that. He can just simply deduce it and that he did. Judging by his hair cut, glasses and eye bags, he's a doctor and he's an old friend of Molly's. In addition, he fancies Molly. But even if he had it figured out, he wanted to hear it from her. If she tells the truth, then that would mean that she's gotten over him and is moving on with another man and if she lies, then that would mean that she's still her old self and is still in love with Sherlock, meaning that he still has a chance with her.
"He's Rob. He's an old friend of mine. He works at Bart's with me and we just went out for dinner."
Dinner. That can have two meanings. It can be the romantic dinner that every sappy, boring girl looks for a man on their first date, or the same dinner The Woman implied to him.
"And no, its not that kind of dinner." She said, smiling a little, which made Sherlock smile too, for some unknown reason.
"Molly. I have to confess to you... a sin." Sherlock said, looking down.
"What sin."
"I know that Rob asked you out for dinner, I know that he fancies you and I know that you're starting to fancy him, too-"
"Sherlock, that's rubbish."
"Let me finish first. I know that you're starting to fancy him too," He continued. "And I planned on ruining your plans for tonight." Molly's eyes grew wide.
"You what?!" She asked in disbelief. Though, she shouldn't be surprised, since Sherlock had a knack for ruining special occasions.
"I wasn't finished yet," Sherlock said, looking into Molly's disappointed eyes. This even made things worse for him. "Something stopped me... I saw you with Rob and, it was the first time I saw you smile like that in the past 9 months. Its the first time I saw you truly happy. And who am I to spoil such happiness to a woman that I love?" Sherlock finished. At the end of Sherlock's confession, Molly was left speechless. Sherlock just looked at her, waiting for an answer, but he knew that he would never get the answer he was seeking, because she doesn't feel the same way anymore.
"Sherlock... I-"
"Its alright, you don't have to say it," Sherlock said, looking down, afraid that Molly might see the weakness in his eyes. "I know you don't love me anymore. But I love you. You know that, right?" Sherlock asked her.
"Yes."
"Good." Sherlock said, giving her a quick smile. For Sherlock, that was enough for him. He looked into Molly's eyes. "Goodbye, Molly." He said.
"Goodbye, Sherlock." She said, before he walked away, never looking back.
2 years later...
John and Mary Watson's Flat
John went out of his bedroom, stretching his back while yawning. He walked towards the kitchen and he was greeted by Mary.
"Morning," Mary said, smiling and giving him a quick peck on the lips. "So, there was a wedding invitation at our doorstep." She said. A wedding invitation? John wondered. He was wondering who's wedding would it be? Lestrade's? Mycroft's? He got the invitation from Mary's hand and she watched him read the gold printed words on the cream white card.
"I have to call Sherlock."
221B Baker Street
Sherlock heard his phone ringing, so he picked it up and answered it.
"What do you want?" He drawled, fingering the cream white card that he received this morning.
"Sherlock, have you seen-"
"The wedding invitation? Yes, I received one." He drawled, reading the wedding invitation again.
Molly Hooper and Robert Blake
request the honor of your presence
at their marriage on Thursday
The 3rd of December at 4:00
at...
Sherlock stopped reading there. It might've been 2 years, but the scars Molly Hooper had placed on his heart were still raw. It was a messy affair, and it looks like Molly has gotten over it with someone who understands. Oh yes, Robert Blake understands Molly Hooper's pain. He asked Mycroft to do a background check on this Robert Blake and it says there that Robert Blake had a son. The woman who gave birth to his child left it to him. And in a car accident, the child died. The doctors couldn't save his 2 year old child, and he lived his whole life carrying the guilt of his son's death.
"Sherlock... Are you still there?" John's muffled voice snapped him out of his thoughts.
"Oh, yes. I'm here." He said.
"So, are you going?"
"What? Me? No... I don't do weddings, John. Yours was enough for me, and I don't want to experience it again." Sherlock said, his chest constricting.
"Sherlock... Are you alright?" John asked.
"Yes, I'm fine. See you later, John." He said, hanging up before he could let his best friend answer. He sighed heavily and looked up at the ceiling, trying to control his tears. He looked out to the window again, thinking, who was he to miss a big event such as a wedding?
Molly and Robert happily walked down the aisle, hand in hand, now officially Mr. and Mrs. Robert Blake. Molly's day couldn't get any better, except for the fact that one of her guests were missing. Sherlock didn't come and even though she can't see him, she knows that he's out there somewhere, watching. It didn't weird her out, since she got used to Sherlock's odd habits. As they were outside the church, she looked into the distance where a mini forest lies, and there, she saw a man in a trench coat, standing near a tree, looking at her direction. She knew immediately that it was Sherlock. He can see her, and she can see him. She waved at him and from afar, she can see him smile back, but due to the cruel trick of the eyes, she mistook it for a happy smile, when in fact, it was a sad one. Due to Molly's happiness, she can't contain and control her actions so she gave her a flying kiss and she can see him smile again. Molly just waved at him one last time before turning back to her new husband.
Sherlock, who smiled at Molly's childishness, was actually in deep thought that time. He was thinking about how beautiful she was, how it would've been him beside her walking down the aisle, how everything would be different if he did things right; he and Molly will be happily married, they'll have a child, they'll have an almost-normal domestic life. But even with all these thoughts, Sherlock can only think of one thing, for the sake of Molly's happiness: It was time to let her go.
And now, that is the concluding chapter of Let Her Go! I am really really sorry for the sappy chapter and the rushed ending, and for that, I owe you an explanation:
-School started last June and I am really overloaded with school stuff. I have to write and direct a play, I have to star in a Mulan cospaly, exams just happened last week, some of my friends are being bitchy, I have badminton classes every Monday, Thursday and Friday
-My dad has Tuberculosis and I have to take care of him
-I don't have a laptop at home. I typed this on my cousin's laptop
-I am going through an emotional roller coaster with someone who I really like who also likes me back
So, anyways, please tell me what you think! Did I end it too early (I think I did, but I'm really sorry. REASONS!)? did I suck? Was I awesome? What? Anyways, I would like to thank the ff. peeps who supported me throughout the story:
