Sephy
The next morning, Matilda awoke with a start. She was drenched in sweat and to be honest, she felt as though her heart was beating so loudly and so fast that it would jump out of her chest. She placed her hand over her heart, taking a few deep breaths and sighing, trying desperately to relax. She turned and looked around for Derek. He wasn't in her room and her window wasn't open. She blinked a few times before she smelled coffee. Realizing that she should probably shower and change her bandages, she did that first, pulling on a loose sweater and a pair of sweat pants, Matilda made her way down the stairs towards the kitchen. In the kitchen, standing at the counter looking outside was a shirtless Derek.
"Morning," she murmured as she pulled her mug from the pantry and poured herself some coffee. She poured the correct amount of sugar and creamer before she looked over at him. "I'm sorry…about…yesterday."
"Don't worry about it," he told her before he paused. "Someone called this morning. The school's closed for the day, the woman seemed somewhat flustered that a man answered the phone instead of you." Matilda giggled, noticing the smirk on Derek's face before she looked at her home phone.
"Any other messages?" There was silence.
"The library called and they told you that you've been let go." Matilda sighed, blowing some of her hair out of her face. She figured that was coming. "Oh, and Sheriff Stilinski called…apparently one of your students threw me under the bus last night saying that I was the one who went on a murderous rampage through the school." Despite his neutral tone, Matilda could tell he was upset. She growled in response.
"Dammit," she murmured.
"He said he's going to stop by." Matilda's eyes widened.
"What?!" Derek nodded, looking down at the bandage on his chest before he pulled it off. He cringed. It was still healing. "Don't even think about vanishing. You're staying right here," she told him firmly before there was a knock on the door. Matilda jumped before she sighed, rolling her eyes at herself. "So help me if you're gone when I get back, I'm going to find you myself and when I do find you, you're going to be missing pieces," she stated. Derek's lip twitched a moment, almost a smile, before he motioned for Matilda to get the door. The female nodded before she approached the front door and opened it. She blinked.
"Sheriff?"
"Mattie. Did you get my message?" She shook her head.
"No, I only just got out of the shower and poured myself some coffee when you arrived." The Sheriff looked awkward.
"Oh, well, first of all the school is shut down for repairs and the like. Stiles and Scott informed me that you were there last night but when we went looking for you, you were gone." Matilda nodded her head. "They also told me that it was Derek Hale who attacked the school." The librarian blinked.
"What?"
"I see you have some bandages there. Did you go to the hospital?" Matilda shook her head.
"No. I have mild medical training so I patched myself up. If you'd like, I can have nurse McCall look me over." The sheriff shook his head.
"No, that's fine. As long as you're okay. Do you remember who attacked you last night?"
"No. Um, I was finishing up some last minute things at work when I heard your son and his friend arrive at the school. I went out to greet them to see what it was they wanted when they pushed me into the school and attempted to lock the door behind us. We hid in the locker room at one point and the Janitor found them before pushing them out. Then he was attacked and I pushed the locker open, hitting the person in the face before they grabbed my ankle and pulled me to them. They didn't let me see who they were." There was a pause. "You don't really think it was Derek do you?" The sheriff sighed heavily.
"I don't know, Mattie. I know Derek would never hurt you, though, so it doesn't really add up." Matilda nodded her head in response. "Well, thank you for your cooperation. If you could stop by the station sometime to write down your official statement that would be great." Matilda nodded her head.
"Of course. I'll stop by sometime tomorrow, if that's okay." He nodded before he bid her good bye and left. Matilda shut the door and sighed a bit.
The librarian returned to the kitchen and was shocked to find that Derek had listened to her and was, in fact, still there. He looked at her.
"What?"
"I'm just surprised I found you here. I mean…you don't usually listen to me." Derek chuckled.
"I like all my appendages where they are," he joked, making her laugh.
"Are you seeing the boys anytime soon?" She asked him. He shrugged. "I know they only did what they did because it made sense at the time. They thought you were dead, I took your car, I mean…what else could they do?" Derek was quiet a moment before he nodded his head. He figured she was right, but she knew he would still be angry with them. "Alright, you big grump, what are you thinking?"
"I'm thinking about what you said last night…about the Alpha," he clarified. Matilda nodded her head.
"That would mean that it knew you." Matilda nodded again. "Which means it wasn't Deaton."
"How was it not Deaton?"
"If the Alpha stops what he's doing to not kill you, chances are it because he likes you and after what happened yesterday, I highly doubt that he would."
"Gotcha…but if not him, then who? It certainly wasn't Stiles, Scott, or you. Who else do I know? I mean, there are a few people at the school but no one who stands out. No one really dislikes me save for one of the girls I work with but she just doesn't like that I'm close to one of the students," she stated with a roll of her eyes. She looked at Derek and saw his raised eyebrow. "He's abused by his father." Derek's face remained emotionless, but his eyes looked at Matilda with sympathy. She smiled at him. "I feel responsible to help him because you and Laura were there for me and it made it better…"
Derek approached Matilda and pulled her into a hug, allowing her cheek to rest a little below his shoulder.
"Laura and I were always sorry we weren't early enough." Matilda looked up at him.
"Neither of you knew."
"But we should have." Matilda snorted and shook her head.
"I kept it hidden rather well…I tried very hard to keep it hidden anyway." Derek gazed down at her a moment.
"Yeah, well, we still should have known…we should have known from the flinching and the way your heart sped up when you saw him and—"
"Derek, stop," she murmured. "It's okay." He grumbled a bit and she laughed before pulling away from his hug. "C'mon, Wolfman, write down what you need from the house, I'll be sure to get it and bring it here." Derek shook his head.
"No, it's fine."
"Derek—"
"No," he stated firmly before sighing. "I'll be heading back to the house tomorrow." Matilda nodded her head before she yawned and grabbed his wrist.
"C'mon. We both need more rest, especially you. You still have a hole in your chest and I'm in so much pain I need a tranquilizer." Derek grumbled a bit before he allowed Matilda to tug him through the kitchen and up the stairs to her bedroom once more. Once there, Derek laid down and Matilda made sure to cuddle up to him as she usually did before she closed her eyes and passed out.
Almost 18 hours of sleep and Matilda awoke alone in her bed, which was far normal than waking up with anyone. She sat up and stretched a bit before she made her way towards the bathroom for a shower. Once out of the shower she put on a pair of jeans, a tank top, and a sweater that used to be one of Derek's when they were in high school together. It was after he and Laura had found out about her father and she came to their house in the pouring rain. The rest of the Hales had been more than willing to rip her father's throat out, but she had told them not to. Derek had given her a sweater of his to wear when she fell asleep.
After getting dressed, Matilda grabbed her purse and phone before leaving. She got into her car and pulled out of the drive way, heading for the police station. She arrived shortly and parked her car. She stepped out and into the station. She looked around before approaching the woman at the front desk. She smiled at her.
"Hi, um, I'm here to give Sheriff Stilinski my statement about what happened at the school a few nights ago." The woman nodded her head and called for him. He stepped out of his office and smiled at Matilda, who waved to him. He motioned for her to enter one of the interrogation rooms.
"Sorry it has to be in here."
"It's fine… I, um, know how these things go," she murmured. The sheriff gave her an awkward smile before he set a pad and a pen in front of her. Matilda grabbed the pad, wrote her name on it, the date, and what it was about before she wrote down her story about how someone attacked her and how she doubted that it was Derek who attacked her, because she knew him.
Once she was done writing her statement, she signed it, dated it and handed it to the Sheriff. He took it and nodded to her in thanks before he told her that she could go since her finger prints were already in the system. She waved good bye to the Sheriff and made her way out of the police station, heading back to the hospital. On her way there, she was stopped by an interesting looking man who gave her a flower before he walked off. Matilda grew confused before she looked down at the flower and her eyes widened. It was aconite or monkshood, also known as Wolfsbane. Matilda dropped the flower as though it had burned her and turned, looking around for the man before she looked down at her hand.
Quickly, she made her way to the hospital where she used the restroom to wash and sterilize her hand before she went to see Melissa McCall, one of the nurses in the hospital. She told her what happened and the older woman put her in one of the rooms so she could make sure everything was okay.
Matilda cringed as Scott's mother pulled the bandages away from her shoulder. She gasped.
"Geez, it looks like you were mauled by something."
"I feel like I was mauled by something," Matilda mumbled as she looked at the claw marks in her shoulder.
"This was from the school, wasn't it?" Matilda nodded her head. She sighed and started to sterilize the wound before she injected Matilda with an anesthetic. She cringed a bit as the needle pierced her skin before she relaxed. "Scott said that you were with him and Stiles. They thought you were as good as dead after Derek killed the janitor."
"No, um, I got away…and…and despite how your son believes its Derek, I don't feel that way. I know how I feel when he's around and it's not like my life is in danger." Melissa's mother nodded her head as she began to sew up some of the deeper scratches.
"I understand. Now then, let's take a look at that ankle." Matilda nodded her head before she put her ankle up for Melissa to see.
"Damn, girl. Are you sure it was a person that attacked you?" She shook her head as the woman sterilized the wound, making her cringe.
"No…I was definitely attacked my something more monster than man," she muttered. Melissa looked at her a moment before she nodded her head in understanding as she wrapped up Matilda's ankle before she sent her on her way. The librarian thanked the nurse before she headed out, knowing that Melissa would start a tab for her.
