Hey guys! I like how I told you all I would be better at updating and I failed again. x_x
Life's gotten a little crazy, not with school but with life and work. Lots of issues in my life, but as per usual, I will overcome and slowly return to normalcy.
Anyway, here's chapter 15, which is dedicated to killjoy13213, for their lovely review and a reminder that I needed to update! Gah!
"Scott…if you don't go a little faster, I'm pushing you out and driving myself," Matilda snapped from the front seat of Derek's black Chevrolet Camaro.
"If I go any faster, I'll kill us."
"Listen, McCall, if you don't go any faster, I'll kill you now drive," she snapped. Stiles moved forward from his spot in the back seat.
"Guys, can we speed things up, please? They're kind of on our asses!" Matilda turned, looking as the Argent's SUV as they drove closer.
"Scott. Faster. Now." Matilda ground out. The boy stepped on it, speeding them down the street, taking as many turns as possible before Stiles told them that the Argents were gone and that they lost them. Just then, Stiles turned on the police radio that he had stolen from his dad.
"All units, suspect is on foot heading into the Iron Works." Matilda looked at Scott before he made a quick turn and headed for the Iron Works. Matilda was quick to push Stiles over and climb into the back seat before Scott pulled up, the Argents firing at Derek as Scott opened the door.
"Get in!" Derek jumped into the car as Scott punched it and they were off. "What part of laying low don't you understand?"
"Dammit, I had him!"
"Who? The Alpha?"
"Yes! He was right in front of me and then the friggen police showed up."
"Oh, hey, they're just doing their jobs," Stiles added.
"Yeah, thanks to someone who decided to make me the most wanted fugitive in the entire state!" Matilda sighed.
"Can we seriously get past that? I made a dumb ass mistake. I get it. Alright… How did you find him?" Derek was silent and Scott sighed, exasperated. "Can you try and trust us for at least half a second?"
"Yeah, both of us," states Stiles as he popped up. Derek sent him a look. "Or just him…I'll be back here," he stated as he Matilda pulled him back, rolling her eyes.
"Look, the last time I talked to my sister, she was close to figuring something out. She found two things. The first was a guy named Harris." Stiles was back up in between the seats.
"Our chemistry teacher? Why him?"
"I don't know yet."
"What's the second?"
"Some kind of symbol…" Derek pulled a piece of paper from his pocket and showed the boys, knowing Matilda had never seen it. Scott shifted in his seat. "What? You know what this is?"
"I've seen it on a necklace…Allison's necklace." Matilda sighed heavily and sat back in the seat.
"Of course it is," she muttered before something clicked. "Derek…" She sat up quickly and he looked back at her. She leaned forward and grabbed the paper, looking at it intently. She then leaned more forward, her lips towards his ear, her voice barely above a whisper so that not even Scott could hear. "Kate used to wear this." Derek looked at her, their faces dangerously close. Matilda's heartbeat sped up, but she focused on the serious look in his eyes. Matilda nodded her head and Derek refocused on the road, growling angrily before the group arrived at Stiles' Jeep. All of them got out so that the two teenagers could head home and so that Derek could go to drop off Matilda at home.
"How did you know that?" Derek asked her as he made his way towards her home.
"I remember seeing it on her pretty often. We had gym together and she never took it off." Derek ground his teeth before he pulled to a stop in front of her house. Matilda turned and looked at him a moment. "I'm sorry," she whispered before she got out of the car and headed inside of her house. She knew that Kate was a sore spot for Derek and as such, she knew he hated bringing her up.
The next morning, Matilda was confronted by the two teenage boys during lunch.
"Mat. We need your help." Matilda blinked.
"My help?"
"Um...yeah…Jackson all but told Scott that he knows he's a werewolf." Matilda blinked, leaning in.
"Are you serious?" Scott nodded his head.
"Jesus Christ. Any other wonderful news?" There was a silence. "…what, seriously?"
"Scott…can't get the necklace from Allison." A heavy sigh escaped Matilda's lips.
"Just steal the damn thing!" She snapped. Scott looked at her, shocked before Stiles looked at Scott with an "I told you so" look.
"Couldn't we just…try to get to Harris?"
"My dad put him on a 24-hour protective detail, okay? The necklace is all we got. So steal it."
"Thank you…" There was a pause and Scott looked over across the cafeteria before Scott looked at the two.
"Stiles, he's watching us." Matilda blinked and looked at Stiles.
"Who?"
"What's wrong?
"Jackson's talking to me. He knows I can hear him." Scott turned to Stiles. "Look at me. Just talk to me. Act normal. Pretend nothing's happening… Talk to me!"
"I can't think of anything! My mind's completely blank."
"Your mind's blank? You can't think of something to say?"
"Not under this kind of pressure!" Matilda rolled her eyes.
"Scott, look at me." The boy looked at her. "You don't need to listen to that punk ass little lacrosse star wannabe, okay? You need to focus on finding the necklace. Ignore him." The boy nodded his head.
"He's not even sitting with them anymore." Matilda kept her eye contact with Scott.
"Don't break eye contact. Look at me and only me. Ignore whatever he's saying. Don't let it get to you. He's just trying to rile you up and get a rise out of you, everything's going to be fine. You and Allison will be fine and that's all that matters. You will both be okay and in the end, what the little punk ass says doesn't matter." After a moment, Scott seemed to calm down and he didn't break anything, which was nice. Matilda smiled at him and he returned it.
"Thanks." She nodded her head, devouring the rest of her chips.
"No problem," she said as she dusted her hands off and downed her soda. She burped and Stiles clapped happily in response, proudly even, making her laugh.
"Alright, boys, I'll be seeing you both tonight at the game." Scott looked at her, blinking.
"You're going to the game?" Matilda nodded her head.
"Of course! You, Isaac, and Stiles are all playing, I wouldn't miss it for the world," she said with a playful wink before she pushed herself up and made her way away from the table. She tossed her trash and headed back to work.
Later that night, Matilda arrived back at the school to watch the lacrosse match that Stiles, Scott, and Isaac were all in. The young woman waved at Isaac as he ran around the field and to his coach, the number 14 flashing at her. Matilda smiled at Scott, grinning at number 11 before he looked around. The woman looked around as well, blinking before she realized that number 24 wasn't out on the field or the bench. Where the hell was Stiles? Perhaps he was just late.
"McCall!" Matilda called. The boy turned and Finstock looked up, ready to yell but when he saw the look Matilda was giving him and motioned for Scott to run over to her.
"What's up, Mattie?"
"Where is Stiles?" Scott shrugged his shoulders. Matilda paused. "Wait…when was the last time you talked to him?"
"While we were at school?" Matilda nodded her head.
"Any other information?"
"Um. I found the necklace, nothing fancy on it, Derek went somewhere to look for something." Matilda nodded her head before she waved him off. He ran back towards Finstock before she was approached by Sheriff Stilinski, Stiles' father.
"Hey! Do you know where Stiles is?" Matilda shook her head.
"No…um…did you talk to him today?"
"Yeah, this afternoon after he came home from school. I mean he was acting kinda weird but he usually is…you know, Stiles." Matilda chuckled and nodded her head.
"Yeah. I'm sure he'll be here though." The Sheriff nodded his head before the two turned away from one another and focused on the warming up.
Halfway through the game, Matilda felt her phone vibrate. She looked down at her phone and blinked. It was a text from Derek telling her that he found something out and was behind the school. The girl looked down at her phone before at the game. She caught eyes with Isaac, who seemed to read her features and nod before she was off.
Matilda made it around the school and saw Derek in all of his glory.
"Derek! Where the hell have you been I—" A gasp escaped Matilda's lips as she noticed a man step out behind her best friend. A man who was extremely familiar to her. "Oh my God," she gasped. The man chuckled.
"Matilda…my dear, it has been too long."
"You…you're not supposed to be here," she murmured. "This…isn't possible. You're supposed to be in a vegetative state," she whispered. Peter Hale laughed and shook his head.
"Not anymore, dear. Didn't my dear nephew tell you in his text? I'm the Alpha." Matilda's eyes nearly bugged out her head and she felt herself stop breathing. Matilda grabbed at her chest as she fell to her knees, her eyes wide. For the first time, Derek moved towards her, his eyes filled with worry as he tried to calm her down and get her to breathe. He took his face in her hands and looked into her eyes. His eyes flashed an icy blue and Matilda started to breathe normally. She sighed heavily, breathing deeply before her best friend stood up and walked almost obediently back over to Peter's side. Matilda stood up straight and looked over at Peter.
"I don't understand…" Peter smiled at her.
"You'll understand in due time," he said gently as he moved towards her, holding his hand out for her to take. She took a deep breath.
"You…you attacked me."
"Only to get Derek's attention…again." Matilda's eyes widened.
"You killed Laura…" Her eyes weld up with tears and Peter sighed.
"I...I did it because it was necessary…I had to become the Alpha," he told her. "You remember me, Mat. I'm Peter, the man who used to drive you home in the evening and who helped you learn how to drive. We teased Derek, messed with him, you remember." Matilda took a few deep breaths before she nodded her head, placing in her hand in his. She didn't trust Peter, but she did trust Derek and looking over at him, seeing him nod, she did as he silently instructed.
With his hand in hers, Peter led her into the boy's locker room of the school. The three of them stepped inside and as they did, Matilda wondered where the hell her best friend was off to until the lights went out. Peter led her towards the shower area, hiding her briefly. Matilda stayed beside Peter, her hand in his. She waited patiently until she heard Scott enter the boy's locker room, asking Derek where the hell he had been before asking what had been going on.
"You know…I don't really get lacrosse," came Peter's voice, as he stepped out from behind the tiled wall, pulling Matilda with him. She looked at Scott, fear behind her eyes and warning. Derek stood beside her, his arms over his chest.
"It was you…"
"When I was in high school, we played basketball…now there's a real sport. Still, I read somewhere that lacrosse comes from Native American tribes and that they played it to resolved conflict. I have that right? I have a little conflict on my own to resolve, Scott." Peter walked around, talking to Scott, pulling Matilda along with him, when all she wanted to do was remain rooted to where Derek was. "But I need your help to do it." Scott snorted.
"I'm not helping you kill people."
"Well, I don't want to kill all of them… And that doesn't have to include…"
"Allison," Derek stated, his voice emotionless, making Matilda look up at him.
"You're on his side?" Scott asked him. "Are you forgetting the part where he killed your sister?"
"It was a mistake."
"What?"
"It. Happens." A stinging sensation shot through Matilda's heart at his words.
"Scott, I think you're getting a wrong impression of us. We really just want to help you reach your full potential."
"By killing my friends."
"Sometimes the people closest to you can be the ones holding you back the most," Peter said quietly, staring at Matilda. The girl kept her eyes on the floor, knowing what Peter was getting at. He was threatening both Scott and Derek at the same time.
"If they're holding me back from becoming a psychotic nut job like you, I'm okay with that." Matilda's head snapped up as she looked at Scott.
"Maybe you could try and see things from my perspective," he muttered as he plunged his claws in to Scott's neck with a speed that Matilda had never seen, making him cry out in pain. Matilda gasped, her free hand hand flying to her mouth before Peter pulled her towards the door, Scott twisting around on the tiled floor in his towel. "Come along, my sweet. Derek, let's go," he stated, much more harshly to his nephew. Derek approached them, looking down at Scott confusedly.
The two werewolves escorted Matilda to the Hale house instead of to her house. Peter made sure that Derek kept her at the house while he went back to her place to grab her some clothes, which was nice of him…she supposed.
"Derek why is this happening?" The younger man kept his mouth shut. His face was emotionless like usual, which scared her. "Wolfman…" He stayed silent. Matilda shook her head, huffing before she stomped away from him, up the charred stairs and towards Laura's old room, where she usually went when Derek was being an asshole to her.
Matilda stepped into the room for the first time in a long time, looking around it. She swallowed hard, the lump in her throat lowering slightly before she ran a hand through her hair, sitting down on the floor next to her best friend's old dresser.
"Laura, why is this happening?" She whispered, confused and scared.
"It's called revenge, Mattie Baby." Matilda nearly jumped out of her skin as she stood up, whirling around to face Peter. He tossed a duffle bag at her feet. She looked down at it, frowning before she knelt down beside it as Peter shut the bedroom door, making her look up briefly before she dug around inside of her bag, seeing not her old clothes, but new clothes. She blinked.
"What?" She whispered as she held up…a dress? She grew confused before she pulled out her other clothes, much more her style and type. Jeans, t-shirts, tank tops, and the like. Something else she noticed that he got her was her leather jacket. She blinked, grinning as she looked down at it. She bit down on her bottom lip before she slipped it on, inhaling deeply before she let it out quickly. She felt warm and comforted in the jacket before she curled up into a ball and fell asleep.
