Chapter 14: Broken Renewals
Max
"Dylan!" I shrieked for joy. He embraced me into a warm hug. "Oh my God, what- how are you here? I thought you were in New York!" I asked in a mad whirl.
He smiled back at me, "Dad got transferred back to California!" I didn't realize it, but a huge grin appeared on my face. Dylan was the only other person, besides Iggy, who knew about Jeb; it's hard not to when you spend everyday over at a person's house.
Dylan had been my childhood best friend, along with Iggy, Bridget, and Lissa. Dylan's father and mine were colleagues back when I was very young. At first, Dylan and I were the classic five-year-old brats. He would scream that I had "cooties" and I would scream back that I didn't and he did, but we eventually warmed up to each other. We were closer than anyone else. Then, Bridget and Lissa became my friends in 2nd grade, when an unpleasant and unfriendly girl named Brittany started making fun of me for not having any friends who were girls. I started hanging out with Dylan exclusively outside of school, afraid I would be bullied even more, but Dylan understood.
In fifth grade, Dylan and I reconciled. We had always stayed friend, but then, we were as close as two people could. That was when Lissa, Bridget, and I started drifting apart. Lissa and Bridget suddenly found an urge to be, "popular", whilst I just wanted to be myself. Before I knew it, they were following Brittany everywhere she went, like lost puppies. It stayed like that for a while, until the beginning of 7th grade. In seventh grade, Lissa started dated Sam, and then believe he was cheating on her with me, all of which was not true. Our friendship was broken forever. And it would forever be broken, just like everything else in my life.
Then, Iggy and I became close friends, as well as Iggy and Dylan. We made, "The Three Musketeers" look weak. Those were the good days; well the average days, which for me, was better than average. I had friends that could understand me, or at least know the pain I was going through. But, they never sympathized for me, which was better than average. Yes, it was definitely better than average.
And then, freshman year, reality came crashing down on me: Dylan and his family were transferred to work for Itex's branch in New York. Life seemed disheveled. My best friend- no brother- of nine years was leaving. And the worst part was, I never got to say goodbye.
But, now he was back.
I looked over at Fang, him obviously uncomfortable. "Oh, Dylan this is Fang, a friend I'm tutoring;" His face twisted with uncertainty, as if he was surprised I had called him a friend I'm tutoring. "Fang, this is Dylan, an old friend." I introduced with a shinning grin coming from my face, ignoring Fang completely.
"Hey." Fang spoke. Dylan eyes didn't even brush over him, as he turned toward a different direction, in disgust.
In an attempt to lighten up the conversation I turned to the adults, "Dr. Hans Gunther-Hagen," I greeted, "it's so great to see you again! How are you? And how is your daughter, Kate?"
He turned to my direction. "Oh, I'm doing fine, and so is Kate. How are you doing, Little Maxiekins?" I cringed knowing that Fang was in the same room as this conversation was.
"Little Maxiekins? Haven't heard that one before!" Fang inquired with a mischievous tone.
I practically growled at his comment, "Shut it, Tooth, before I make you shut it."
Dylan laughed, "Same ol' Max," He shoved me in my side, unknowing that there was a bruise there. I grunted in pain, and he looked at me in worriness. I gave him a look as if to say, "We'll talk about it later."
"Don't worry, just fell when I was skateboarding." I covered. Jeb nodded towards me in approval; he was oddly sober, probably because there were guests present.
"Max, why don't you take Dylan to your room and talk; Mr. Gunther-Hagen and I have business to attend to. As for the other, I feel it is time for them to leave, don't you?" I nodded, timidly.
"Dylan, you know the way to my room; I'm just going to walk Fang and his sister out." He turned toward the direction of my bedroom, as I walked outside to find Juliet, with Fang on my tail.
"Juliet it's time for you and Fang to go!" I yelled into the backyard.
A small head poked out behind a green hedge, "Awww, but we were in the middle of "Hide and Go Seek," and I was winning." She pouted.
"Probably because Nudge is hiding from you." Fang snarkily added. I glared at him, along with Juliet. She trudged along after us, muttering something about a, "drigged-up gickhead." We walked into the house and out into the front yard.
Juliet started walking around to the back seat of the car, "Take my car, I can catch a ride with Dylan tomorrow." I offered. Fang's face tightened.
"How can you even stand being in the same room with him? He is a total jackass." He interrogated.
I looked at him oddly. "What are you talking about? He's been my best friend ever since I could read."
He rolled his eyes back at me, "God, he's just so, annoying. I won't have to see more of him, right?" He asked gratefully.
"I don't know, and maybe you should just give him a chance. After all, you hated me at first, maybe it'll be the same for you and him!"
He frowned at my optimism, "Highly unlikely." He growled. I looked back at him in rage, "Whatever, Juliet and I have to go." He muttered.
"So what, now you're pissed off at me?"
"I guess you could say that, but why not go ask Dylan?" He growled back. I stalked away, through our door and slammed it behind me. I didn't want to be pissed off at Fang, but he was being out of hand.
I walked past Dr. Gunther-Hagen and Jeb, saying, "Nice to see you again," and walked through the hallway to my bedroom. I hated that hallway; it glowing with pictures of the happy past. The past when Jeb wasn't a nightmare that kept on replaying. I walked into the room to find Dylan laying down on my bed.
"Hasn't changed a bit, has it?" I shook my head no, and sat down on the chair to my desk. "So that guy, what was his name? Tooth?" He asked.
"No his name's Fang. I just like to call him Tooth because its fun to piss him off." Dylan laughed at my remark, and I smiled back at him.
"Okay, so what kinda name is Fang? I mean really, does his mother hate him that much?"
I smirked at his question, knowing I had asked something similar. "Actually its a nickname," Dylan faked a shocked look, "Apparently, when he was just turning eleven, he went a school field trip to the zoo, and his class and him were walking through the reptile exhibit. He found the door leading into where all the snakes were, and accidentally let five different snakes out. I think one of them was even a Boa Constructor. Then he went back to where his class was, and started calling him Fang for all of the snakes."
Dylan looked at me, thinking hard, "Wait, so he was almost eleven, let out a Boa Constructor, and he has messy, jet-black hair. Max, it's hard to say this, but Fang is actually Harry Potter."
I burst out laughing. "Oh my God, YES!" We continued to talk and joke around. Until the conversation finally dropped.
"What was all of that about your side? Skateboarding? Really? Is Jeb still being an asshole?" I was silent. "I thought that you were going to talk to him and try to reason with him, like a year ago!"
I turned to him in shock, "I did, and you wanna know what happened? He forever marked his answer on me! See!" I turned around and showed him a rough spot on the small of my back. In small carvings lay a scar reading, "Never." Without warning, he traced each little word that caressed my skin. With his touch brought both the pain of the past, but also the warmth I had not felt before. I turned back toward him, with a confused look on my face.
"Max, this is, horrible." He whispered.
I shook my head. "No, I can't do anything about it, trust me." He stared at me with a pained look on his face. "Hey, my friend, Kayla, is having a bunch of my friend over to her house, tomorrow. You should come!" I said, changing the conversation.
"Max, your changing the topic."
"Seriously, you should come."
He rolled his eyes at me, and thought for a minute, "No, I don't even know Kayla. Plus, it's too short notice, and-"
"Come." I finally said. He shook you head. "Come on, Iggy and Gazzy will be there, not to mention Nudge."
He sighed, "Fine."
And I'm ending it. Did you like it? I think it wasn't too horrible? You guys remember about Kayla having everyone over to her house. Right?
So I know that I'll get a bunch of crap for adding some Mylan, but I think that this Mylan won't last past chapter 20. Just saying.
