Chapter 42

The nine year old Skye watches as her eyes blink to the fast lights. They wanted her to talk now, it wasn't just the poking and medicine, they wanted her to talk, and fight things that weren't there. They wanted her to do things she couldn't do. But really the nine year old couldn't remember anything past this, she'd lost the life in her eyes, and her memories didn't even exist much past this point. Everything was just an illusion to her. She couldn't tell what was real, and what was a dream of her own. Or something the scientist put there.

"She's not making any progress this way." Raina says watching behind the one way window. "I need you to find her someone she can trust." Raina asks Havoc next to her. "We're getting close at unlocking it in her, or finding a way to take it from her. But we're not there yet. Which is why we need to try a different approach." Raina walks over to the window, and puts her hand on the glass over Skye. She'd refused to speak again, and Raina wasn't sure she understood anything. The girl Skye had lost all signs of emotion, and didn't even scream when she was in pain anymore. It was concerning to Raina, because she knew that at some point Skye's brain would give out, and they'd have no subject to observe.

"Hire someone to stay with her a few days, in a fake apartment you'll set up here in the facility. It has to be someone she has never met, and get them to act as her father. We'll give her daydream for a few days to get the life back in her eyes, and see if things will work out better."

"I understand." Havoc responds.

"Good, I'll be gone for a week meeting with our benefactor Ian Quinn. In that time all that has to be done, is the girl shall be put in a room for one week with a fake father. Will get her on a normal diet, and put her in an illusion she thinks exists. If things prove true, our work will almost have paid off."

Raina leaves that afternoon.

Havoc begins interviewing some people. "Fred Phillip?" She repeats for the name of a man who had applied to be a guard a few weeks ago. He wore a suit, and had glasses on. He was partly bold, and had a Captain America shield picture on the side of his resume. "You a fan of Captain America?" She asks him.

"Sure am, even have all his trading cards." Havoc studies the man. He looked like a wimp, and not the type of person they'd hire to work as a guard. She saw why he didn't get hired. Yet even though he was a wimp, he'd make a very good fake father for a week.

"Looks like you just got a job sir Fred Phillip."

"Call me Phil." He offers, reaching out his hand to shake Havoc's.

The man Fred Phillip was explained to what his role would be. He was to care for the girl, he was to look after her and try to get her talking again. He would pretend to bring her into a happy life, where things were real and she was happy. He'd only have to do it for a week, and he was getting paid an incredible amount of money.

Phil agreed to it. And a few days later he was going in a room ready to meet Mary Sue Poots.

The first day he came into the room, he saw the girl for the first time asleep on a bed where her new room would be for a week. Cameras were hidden everywhere, and Phil didn't know what he was getting himself into. He was supposed to be hired as a guard. That had been the assignment from Fury. He was supposed to be observing the compound to see if there really was an 0-8-4 being kept here. What he didn't expect was this, this girl.

"Mary." Phil greets. He shook the girl's body, her head lying on a pillow. "I've made breakfast for you." The girl didn't get up. She just kept lying there, looking at the wall. Phil wasn't even sure she was blinking.

"Guess daddy will have to carry you to the table." He lifts the girl out of the bed. She was so light and thin for a girl her age. As his fingers wrap around her back, he feels the scars under her shirt.

Coulson knew he couldn't say undercover at this for long. He had the proof he needed here, for Shield to come in and bust this girl out, and tare down this facility. Unfortunately he was being monitored 24/7. Meaning only after this experiment was over would he have time to contact Fury.

Coulson carries Mary to the couch, and turns on the TV, trying to get her to eat some of the bacon and eggs he was cooking up. But the girl sat motionless, she didn't respond to anything. For the whole day Coulson felt like he was talking to himself, and not another person. By the end of the day he was almost ready to give up.

When night came the only thing that the girl responded to was her medicine. When Coulson brought the water and the seven different multi colored pills, she took them without a word. Coulson had tried to play them off as cold medication, but the girl didn't appear to even be able to hear him. It made Coulson sick to his stomach.

After Coulson took the girl back to her bed, and she fell asleep with the help of the medicine she'd been given. After some doctors looked her over, and some scientists came to talk to him about his approach.

The next two days, it was the same scenario, and Coulson was a bit frustrated. Was the girl even real? Maybe she wasn't. But whenever he went to pick her up, and felt her scars, he knew that she'd been through more than he knew.

On the third day Coulson put on a TV show, while showing the girl his different Captain America trading cards. "And this one here is my favorite." He told Skye. He picked it up, and put it in her hand. "See it's blue, kind of pretty. Like the sky." For the first time since they met, Coulson got a bit of an interaction. The girl looked down at the card, and Coulson swore he heard her mumble the word 'sky.'

That next day instead of calling the girl Mary, he started calling her Blue Sky, simply because it made more sense, and she seemed responsive more whenever he used it. But other than that, Skye simply wouldn't give him any other word or emotion.

On the last day, he was told that the experiment was a failure, and he'd have to try and make up a fake situation to the child, that she was to sick and had to go to a hospital. Coulson wasn't sure why they wanted him to do this, Skye seemed to know that what was happening is fake, so he didn't see a need to make more things up for her.

But there he was on the last day, carrying her out of bed and to their fake living room again and telling her she'd have to go away. But Coulson knew this was his last day, and he knew that he could risk a few things.

He grabbed the girl Skye's hand. He brought the girl on his lap, and whispered in her ear away from what the camera could hear. "I want to save you my little Skye; I want to bring you out of this place. In a few days you'll be free."

Coulson wasn't expecting a reaction, he wasn't expecting anything really. After a week of silence, and her not saying a word, Coulson just assumed that his words wouldn't get through.

For some reason these words resonate within Skye, and she's able to move her hand and touches Phil's face. "Save me." She mumbles, for the first full words she's really said since Coulson had met her.

Tears begin falling from her still dead looking eyes. And then something strange happens. Fire is burning out of Coulson's finger tips.

"What the?"

Things expanded from there, and Coulson blacked out. When he awoke again, standing up he saw that the building he was in was in flames, and underneath at his feet was the girl he'd looked after.

Unsure of what happened; he was able to carry Skye out safely. Taking her to safety Skye watched the flames burn behind her, unsure of how they'd been set, and if the man carrying her out was real, or not.

XxXxXxX

Coulson looks at his hands, remembering the feeling of being able to control that fire for less than a single second, than blacking out and not remembering anything when he woke up. He hadn't been able to control fire again after that, but he knows that somehow him, or Skye had engulfed the building in flames, leaving a small escape path for them to leave.

After taking Skye out of the building, he wasn't allowed to see her again as she was put in shield custody. If he saw her again, things could be trailed back to him. As far as everyone knew, his cover Fred Phillip died in that fire like everyone else.

When he finally saw Skye again, she didn't recognize him, but he recognized her. Which is why from the beginning he had been keeping an eye on her, to make sure she was safe. From the very moment that Skye was put back in the foster system, where she was monitored to make sure she fit back in with society, Coulson had watched her and kept an eye on her, to make sure his fake daughter for that week, his Blue Sky, was safe.

So wow, deep chapter, going over the history of how Coulson knew Skye before they met for the first time in chapter 2. Who knew from the beginning Fred Phillip, was Coulson? I tried to make it sort of obvious. A few chapters, left. Than think I'll do a short ten chapter story on what I think S2 episode 11 will look like.
