The next morning me, my brothers, and the Benson's all climbed up on the widows walk to see if we could figure out who the new people were going to be.
"I think my mom and dad know something," said Steve as soon as we closed the trapdoor, "Every time we mention the new family they look at each other in that 'we know something you don't know' sort of way."
"Yeah", agreed Tony, "but when we ask about it they just laugh and say, 'you'll see'. What's that supposed to mean! 'You'll see!' We'll see what!" Tony yelled exasperated.
"Well what do you suggest we do?", I asked.
"I've got an idea," said Jake. We all turned our attention on him and he continued, "You said your parents know something, right?", he asked the Benson boys. They nodded and Jake continued again, "So all we need to do is watch your parents and figure it out," he said smiling.
"So," started Bill, "basically you want us to spy on our parents."
"Yep that pretty much covers it," said Jake.
"Cool, that's fine by me," said Steve.
"Yeah," agreed Bill, "It'll be fun, sort of dangerous and risky and stuff."
"Why would it be dangerous and risky," asked Danny.
"I don't know, it just felt like the right thing to say."
"You're so weird, sometimes you remind me of Caroline Malloy," Wally stated.
"I thought Beth was the weirdo and Caroline was the crazy," Doug said innocently.
"Yeah but she was weird in a crazy-pycho way," Wally replied, "It's basically the same thing."
The boys continued chatting and planning until late in the evening when the Bensen boy's parents finally called to ask where they were and to please send them home before dinner gets any colder. The boys said their goodbyes and told them they'd be back tomorrow after they got done with their chores.
"So," started Jake, "how are we going to spy on mom and dad without them getting suspicious?"
"We could tap their phones," suggested Wally, "then we'll hear everything they say and whats said back to them."
"That's a good idea," I said, "except we don't have the money to buy stuff like that. I bet it's super expensive."
"Well, what do you suggest," asked Jake, looking at me, "we have to do something."
I thought about it for a minute. "I guess the only way we can really spy on our parents without them knowing about it is to do nothing."
"How does doing nothing help us figure out who's moving in," Peter asked. Wally and Jake looked like they were thinking the same thing.
"Yeah," Jake agreed getting annoyed, "The whole point of making a plan to spy on our parents is to actually spy on them."
"It's not like were really going to do nothing," I started to explain, "we'll just make it look like nothing's changed."
"Oh I get it," Wally said, warming up to the idea, "So it's like when they're on the phone we listen in but won't let them know it."
"Exactly, the goal is to be as nonchalant as possible."
"When really were listening and recording everything they say," Jake finished. We all grinned and gave each other high fives before climbing down the ladder. I waited for everybody else to get down before turning and closing the trap door, making sure it latched in the process.
