Chapter 20 - Stargate?
That night family dinner was louder than all the previous times since added to the Carter-O'Neill young ones; they were Terran's four kids, Alex's twins. And there were six kids Malcolm assumed were Sasha's.
"Jade, Tessa, and Kim are Allistair kids. Natasha, Michael, and Sean are Sasha's," Aila whispered to him, pointing to each child with a smile.
"I'm not too sure how Alli and Sash had kids at the same time. Jade is two weeks older than Tasha. Micheal is three months older than Tessa. But Kim and Sean share the same birthday! It's weird. I'm sure it's not supposed to work like that, not even for twins! Not that it was on purpose, I hope…" she blushed.
"I'm babbling, aren't I?"
"A bit," Malcolm grinned. "I didn't know Allistair kids would join too."
"Ah, Alli checked in with Sasha and found out about the situation. He found out their plans to bring the kids here. So, he sent them too."
"How?" he frowned, and Aila looked at him, confused.
"Ah, you mean, how did I know? You were looking at them," she grinned. He crooked his eyebrow. "Well, every one of us has higher brain activity; it allows us to see easily things others don't see or can't see at all."
"Including me wondering about your nieces and nephews?"
"Yes. And the fact they are not as fine as they seem."
"Who?"
"My parents," she stated
"What do you know?"
"I know that if I were in their shoes, I wouldn't be entirely happy either."
"Aila?" one kid called.
"Yes?"
"We believe you have the number seven. None of us has it," Pearl murmured to her older sister.
"Oh, yes, I believe I do. So, today I was…"
Unbeknownst to most of them, Jack and Sam were using their "normal" skills to keep a watch full eye on their family, and that included Aila and her interaction with the outsider. What they saw brought smiles to their faces.
The next morning, Malcolm couldn't sleep in, even if he tried. The house was noisier than before; the laughs and antics of the kids were loud even when they tried to hush it. He groaned and gave his day a start.
The sight differed from the previous day. Whereas at night, all the kids were bursting at the seams, excited to get their turns to speak. Now, some of them looked down and halfway asleep, and others were making breakfast a boisterous activity. His eyes fell on Aila; on her school uniform, she looked more like her mother that he noted before.
"Morning, Mr. Wells," Terran welcomed him. His salutation brought a chain of 'good mornings' from all those sitting around the table.
"Morning to all, " he looked around and frowned when he didn't found Sam or Jack.
"Oh, they have a meeting in town. They will join you as soon as they can," said a girl he hadn't seen before entering the room. She smiled the big Carter smile, and it mesmerized him. "I'm Piper," she said before the little ones jumped to speak.
"When did you get here?" Aila asked over the noise of his little siblings.
"With the five AM shuttle," Piper grinned and looked into the faces of the young people. "Geez, what are they feeding you? You all look so big!"
At the end of the table, Terran cleared his throat. Piper's eyes widened, surprised.
"Terran?" Piper rushed to hug her older brother, then after, a second, she pushed herself away. "Wait, what are you doing here? What are all the kids doing here?"
"What do you think?" Terran huffed.
"Oh, crap! How are they?"
"Hanging in there."
"Alex, Sash, Alli?"
"They are trying to keep things at bay. I'm hiding," T shrugged.
"If they can't find you, they can't order you to do it."
"Exactly."
"Do what?" Malcolm asked curiously.
"Sorry, Mr. Wells. At the moment, that's not of your concern."
After that, the sound of the kids getting their stuff cleared, and leaving was enough to stop any conversation. Along with the kids, both Piper and Terran disappeared from Malcolm's sight.
Malcolm found himself alone for the first time, and he took it as a chance to look around the house. The building had enough room for everyone. He hadn't noticed it before, but it was at least a five-story building.
Besides the vast dining room, and to his utter surprise, he found a ballroom, a second library that looked more like a schoolroom, filled with many school supplies and projects littered around several tables. Then, he opened the door to what seemed a music room, and he was halfway inside to check it when a voice caught him.
"We all play something. We could be the next Von Trapp family," Sam joked.
"Except I sing horribly," Jack added. "If you are
done snooping around, care to join us at the labyrinth?" Malcolm blushed.
"We haven't used that background yet," Sam continued, ignoring the mortified look the younger man had. "And the day is lovely."
They waited for him to turn around and walk out of the room, closing the door behind him to show him the way.
Several minutes later, they sat in the middle of the labyrinth. The middle comprised another fountain, a Greek-looking gazebo, several benches, and lampposts that seemed to adorn the place.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Sam said, and Malcolm nodded. He did his thing, preparing the 'set' and thought his first question.
"What's the thing Terran doesn't want to be ordered to do?" He sprung, the question took them half by surprise.
"There are many things which Terran doesn't want to be ordered to do," was the cryptic response."
"But why is he hiding here?"
"You'd have to ask him. What I can say is I would be here too if it were me in his position," Jack huffed.
"He's afraid that someone will force himself to make something related to you, isn't he?"
"Mr. Wells, we agreed to talk about our past, what's Terran or any of our kids doing here, is part of our present."
"And we like to keep it that way."
Malcolm saw the two clench their jaws, and figuring they would kick him out if he pursued that line of questioning, he clenched his to contain his curiosity.
"If you don't have questions, we can tell you a funny memory from back in 2020," Sam offered amicably, he sighed.
"Until you can come up with more past related questions," Jack added.
"Fine, what's your memory from?"
"Well, it was.."
2020
"Is he in there?" Sam hurriedly asked his secretary.
"Ma'am, you can't go in," the woman panicked when Sam neared the Oval Office door
"So, he is here," she smiled wickedly, "Who is inside?"
"No one yet, ma'am, but…" Sam opened the door and entered his office when the secretary added "he has a meeting in two minutes" the secretary finished
"Ok," Sam grinned at her, and then, she closed the door.
2050
"It was our real first day, you know. The Inaugural day passed by quickly. Then the second day, they show you the things you are supposed to know and all."
"We already had moved half of the appointments because of the Sullen's case, but that didn't mean we got away with not having them."
"Basically, I postponed a bunch of meetings for the next day. But there was one we didn't need to have."
2050
"Sam?" he glanced as his wife strode to him. Sam could be a scary sight in her full dress blues. Hot, but scary.
"Jack."
"Whatcha doing here?"
"Probably the same you are doing here," she sighed before collapsing in the chair he had just vacated.
"So, you have a meeting with some dude you never heard about before?" he joked.
"Maybe not the same thing. I'm hiding."
"Secret Service?" he asked, and she nodded
"They don't get I am an Air Force General, and I don't need eleven babysitters! All that I do is sit inside the Pentagon or the White House!"
"Or at the SGC or the Hammond or Atlantis or the Ivanhoe or…"
"Whatever," she waved. "We do not allow them in those, thank God they don't know those exist! If it were my call, they wouldn't be allowed at the Pentagon either. I can't get out of my office without them following around as if I'm a puppy that might get lost!"
"Yes, it sucks, I know," he puffed, then he frowned, "How did you outrun them?"
"I used the Pentagon fire exit. Then, I grabbed the Indian, which was beamed there from the SGC after the last mishap, and rode here as fast as I could," she grinned.
"You know they are most likely still searching for you, right?"
"I don't think so. I told Cassie I was going to the bathroom, used the bathroom window to get to the inner patio, and then entered another washroom; got out of there… walked to the nearest fire stair and ran down, then I located the Indian, called Cassie, and told her that if they asked, I returned a while ago, and I am still inside the office."
"Oh, woman, I like the way you think."
"Thanks," they were about to kiss when the internal phone sounded.
"Mr. President, your 1500 meeting is here."
2050
"So after our meeting with Mr. Sullen, I went to work at the Pentagon. The SS followed me, and there wasn't one or two of them, but eleven! If I breathed, they breathe too. It was so annoying."
"She outsmarted them and returned to the house, letting them believe she was still at her office."
"I went to his office, and he was about to start a meeting, which I had clearance to assist."
2020
Jack quickly put himself straight and cursed. He was about to give good use to his Presidential chair by taking advantage of his wife's lips when the interruption occurred.
Before they could decide what to do about her presence in the office, a young man came in. He looked like a cross between Daniel and Sam, Jack thought and then shook his head 'No, that's a bad example.' The man looked military nerdy, more nerdy than military though.
"Mr. President," he saluted. "Lieutenant Colonel Evans, sir."
"Lieutenant Colonel," Jack dismissed.
"I'm here to inform you about an under the radar program going within the Air Force," the nerdy guy looked at Sam, and as she didn't move, he pointed towards her. "Mr. President? General, I mean no disrespect, but I'm not sure you have clearance."
"Colonel, I guess you know General Carter? Joint Chiefs of Staff? The Chairman of them?" Jack offered, and he realized it wasn't until the last one until Evans got the reference.
"Ok, so clearance sorted then," Evans huffed, feeling more at ease. "Sir, I am here to inform you about," he stopped excitedly, "The Stargate Program."
The Colonel's eyes were bright with pride, and he had a conspiratorial smile. If he were anyone else, Jack would have trouble keeping his face straight, but years of experience mocking Daniel allowed him to look amazed.
"The Stargate Program, you say? Sounds eerie, what's that about?" Jack risked a glance towards Sam, who had an eyebrow raised and somehow was keeping her face in a blank mask.
"Ma'am, do you want to explain it?"
"No, Colonel, please go ahead. I'm here on a social call," she beamed at him.
"Oh, I see," Evans said.
'No, he doesn't,' both thought
"The Stargate Program started back in 1997. The Stargate is a door that connects our world to an insurmountable amount of planets across the Galaxy! The Air Force has been keeping the world safe since that year," Evans announced excitedly.
"No kidding! Against aliens?" Jack asked, astounded. Sam bit her lip to stop herself from giggling.
"Yes, sir! In the beginning, there was the Goa'ulds, but they don't exist anymore. Then the Replicators, the Ori's, the Wraith…," the young officer continued finding that the President was taking it great.
"Like in out of this world real bad alien guys?" Jack asked, amazed.
"Yes, sir!" Evans nodded. "But you need not worry, sir, most of them aren't enemies anymore. Sir. I'm here to explain the basics of the stargate program. Also, to deliver you all the files related to the Program. Any question that might arise, sir, I am here to answer."
"Any question? Really?" Jack beamed, "did you hear that, General? I can ask him any question I want about mean aliens attacking Earth! How cool is that?"
2050
"My 1500 appointment was to bring me up to speed on the Stargate Program."
"But? You were already at full speed," Malcolm frowned in confusion.
"Yes," Jack smirked, "But the Lieutenant Colonel didn't know about it."
2020
"What do you know about SG-1, Colonel?" Sam asked, joining Jack on a couch and getting closer to the junior officer.
"General?" he frowned, confused by her.
"You know, about SG-1? I was appointed at Homeworld security before; maybe it is important if you explain more to the President, you know, as a background," she completed
"Yes, ma'am. SG-1 was our flag team, sir. Until five years ago, when the JCS decided SG-1 should not be used anymore. It was composed of four air force officers: Colonel Maine, Major Thompson, and Captains Lopez and Smith. Until now, teams travel off-world to keep in touch with our allies and trade technology."
"So, we trade with aliens?" Jack said in awe.
"Yes, sir," the officer affirmed fiercely
"Carter?" Jack frowned."
"Yes, sir?" She smiled at him.
"You knew about this?"
"Yes, sir."
"And is he saying that the good ol'times are over?" Jack asked, sounding a bit disappointed.
"Pretty much squashed, sir, especially after the last Ba'al," Sam grinned.
"Ah, yes, Ba'al."
"Mr. President," Evans started with widened eyes. "You know about Ba'al, sir?"
"We were acquainted."
"Colonel? What can you tell us of the first SG-1?"
'Oh, Sam! You are mean,' Jack said via their link and heard a chuckle back before she answered, in the same way: 'I'm mean? You started it.'
"Oh, the first SG-1!" Evans said in awe. "They are legends, ma'am. They are many myths about them like they all died at least once and that at least two of them got a Goa'uld in them at some point."
"Tok'ra," both said under their breath.
"Excuse me?"
"Nothing, son. Do you know them?"
"The original four were Teal'c, a Jaffa, that is an alien race which used to be Goa'uld incubators and guards, they are now free. There was an archaeologist/linguist; he broke the code behind the Stargate, Doctor Daniel Jackson. Then there was the military part of the team; a Doctor named Sam Carter; he was a member of SG-1 since he was a Captain and way up the day he was promoted to Colonel. And finally, the SG-1 CO, Colonel Jack O'Neill, he was part of the SG-1 until his promotion to General," Evans finished.
"So, Sam, what do you make of this original SG-1?"
"They sound kind of cool, sir."
"Funny, sir. Your Vice President, he is Doctor Daniel Jackson."
"Yes?"
"And you are Jack O'Neill."
"Yes?"
"And you called the General, Sam, and Carter…"
"And?"
"If the General was a male, and you knew someone called Teal'c, someone could think you were SG-1," Evans said.
"Sam, honey," he said, smiling at her and patting her thigh softly. "Can you get that picture from my desk and show it to the Colonel here?"
Sam stood up, walked to his desk, and grabbed the picture he wanted. It was one of the last photos of them as the only four members of SG-1, they were standing on a sandy planet, and they all looked thrilled.
"Here, sir!" she grinned. Jack stood up and walked to the Colonel, showing him the portrait.
"You know, son, this person is responsible for saving our world more times than you know about," Jack said, tapping Sam's position. The Colonel looked at them, and then at the picture several times, "The Carter guy, he was a woman?" Evans asked, confused. Jack added, several minutes went, and the Colonel didn't release the picture, so Jack returned to his seat and threw his arm over Sam's shoulders. "Hey, you know what, Evans? You can keep that picture and…"
"Hey Jack?" the other door opened
"Daniel…"
"Sam, uh… Colonel?"
"I was being briefed on the Stargate Program, Daniel," Jack said, amused. "It's amazing! We fought with big bad aliens."
"So, he didn't get the memo?" he asked, looking at Sam.
"You know me and memos, Daniel."
"I didn't mean you; I was talking about the Colonel. Colonel Evans, didn't you get the memo?"
"Mr. Vice President, sir. I haven't received any memos," he frowned, eyeing the picture and at the three people in the room.
"The one that said, "Stargate Meeting canceled. Reasons:
'Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Doctor Samantha 'Sam' Carter- O'Neill, an original member of SG-1;
Vice President Dr. Daniel Jackson, an original member of SG-1.
President, retired General Jonathan 'Jack'' O'Neill, an original member of SG-1'" Daniel quoted from memory
"I…, um," he flushed red. "You are married?" was all he managed to ask. Jack laughed.
"Yes, and we were SG-1, too."
"It's okay, Colonel. No one knows about it; it is classified," Sam said, taking pity on the unfortunate officer.
"You can go now, and I am talking seriously, you can keep that picture. Hey! You can even brag about knowing three out of four."
"I don't think he can brag about it, " Sam said as the blushing Colonel left the room.
"Well, there's all that classified thingy, but hey, at least he can brag with other officers with proper clearance, right?" They were about to start an argument, and Daniel, having known them for a lot of time, cleared his throat.
"Daniel, what are you doing here?"
2050
"Well, the meeting was the funny part. The not so fun part was what Daniel told us after."
2020
"I was looking for you, Sam. Cassie mentioned you already headed home. I went up, and you weren't there so…"
"You found us, Danny-boy, what's the matter?"
"With all the press about you being the former Chairman of the JCS, Jack, and then, Sam taking your place there. Well, the word is the Senate wants to revise your career, Sam," he grimaced.
"Oh, come on! They did it when they approved me as Chairman! A whole year ago," she huffed.
"Yes, but they claim now 'they didn't know Jack was your husband,' and thus, they will have to analyze he didn't help you up the ladder or that the frat rules weren't broken."
"Again?" She asked, crestfallen. "I hate this! They already visited my career when the daughter from hell accused me of sleeping my way up because she wanted Jack, and then again, to approve me as Chairman."
"I know, Sam. That's why I thought you should grab the bull by the horns."
"Oh, no. I don't like it when you think like that space-monkey!"
"You don't even know what I am proposing, Jack," he rolled his eyes.
"But I know I won't like it. I know you as much."
"Well, there's that," Daniel smiled.
