Welcome to Riften

Glacier's POV

"Marine, how far are we from Riften?" I asked her.

My cousin leaned forward on her mare to see the road ahead.

"Pretty far, but we should be there before noon." She informs me.

Marine, Lydia, and I have been traveling the road since this morning. After Marine used her super speed to get us down the huge mountain, we spent the night at Vilemyr Inn until dawn. We're traveling to this metropolis named Riften; I have knowledge of what will be there. I wonder why Marine doesn't want Lydia to tell me about it. Is Riften really full of criminals like Bjarlam said or is it something else. This is a mystery to me.

I was caught up in my thoughts that I didn't see Marine's horse make a right turn. Snapping back to reality, I directed Suzy to make a right; Lydia followed behind me. We arrived at a lumber mill near an island; a guard was there, he's probably patrolling the mill from danger. A little boy was there too, must be the son of the lumber worker.

Marine and I dismounted our steeds as Lydia followed us.

"Marine, why are we here?" I inquired.

"I'm going to sharpen my swords it won't take long." Marine told me before going to the grindstone.

"What am I suppose to do then?"

"Hold your breath underwater." I rolled my eyes at her. "Or play with Gralnach."

The little boy in green clothing ran over to Marine and me, he seems to be curious about us being here.

"Who are you?" he questioned me.

"I'm Glacier, and this is Marine; we're travelers."

"I hope you're not here to cause trouble."

"Not to worry, we don't plan on anything."

"Okay."

"Where are your parents?"

"My mother works the mill, I help her cut the wood sometimes."

"What about your father?"

"I…I don't know, he disappeared somehow and left me and my mom alone to run the mill." I raised an eyebrow in confusion. How can a father disappear and leave his wife and son to run the mill? That doesn't make sense whatsoever.

"Is your mother at the working right now?"

"Not right now, she's in the house. You can go talk to her if you like."

"Thank you." The kid wondered off to the beach as I entered the log house.

His mother was sitting at a small table drinking a mug of mead. I went to the table to speak with her, and then I heard her say.

"If you see my good-for-nothing husband Leifnarr tell him he's not welcomed here." She told me.

"I'll put that to mind." I said. "If you don't mind me asking, what happened to your husband?"

She groaned that can't be a good sign.

"He said he was going east towards the border of Morrowind to trade some of our grain to some folks at Broken Helm Hollow. I waited and waited, and he never returned. Probably shacked up with some elven whore. Good riddance to him I say. If I knew where he was, I'd give him a piece of my mind."

"Did your husband know anyone at Broken Helm Hollow?"

"I don't know, he said some men have been promising good prices at local mills and farms. Leifnarr said they'd pay double than what you get at the markets, but the catch was he had to go there with our wood. So not only was he gone, but our supplies as well."

"Thank you for your cooperation, ma'am. I know it's not my place to interfere with family matters, but if it's putting you and your child in a bind I'm happy to help out."

"Thank you, it means a lot to me." She smiled at me.

"I'll find your husband for you on my travels. You and your son take care." I said exiting the house.

Once outside, Marine was on her mare waiting for me. I waved goodbye to the boy before mounting Suzy. He said bye, then Marine and I rode back on the trail to Riften. I wonder where Broken Helm Hollow is. I mean I could ask Marine for information, but then she's going to start bitching about my inquisitiveness. Maybe someone in Riften might know where it is, I hope to God they do.

"We're almost there you guys, but we have to go around."

"Let me guess the trail we are on now is leading us to the back entry of Riften not the front entry." I received the slow clap as Marine's response.

"You actually got it right you get the slow clap." She chuckled.

Fifteen minutes has pasted and we finally made it to Riften. We took our mares to the stables for food and rest. After dismounting our horses, we made our way to the Riften entry gate, but the guards stopped us.

"Halt! Before we can allow you ladies into the city you have the pay the visitor's tax." The guard says.

"Visitor's tax? What the hell is that for?" I retorted.

"The privilege to enter the city. Does it matter? Pay up!" He demanded. I was about to convince him to let us in for free, but Marine stopped me before I could.

"I got this, Glaze." My twin says.

She walked towards the guards, stood still for a moment, and then the most ridiculous thing happened.

"Shakedown! Shakedown! Shakedown! Shakedown!" Marine shouted at the guards. Her voice was so loud that the citizens of Riften and all of Skyrim could hear her.

"Alright, we'll let you girls in just stop shouting!" Once those words were said Marine stopped. "Let me unlock the gate."

"Thank you!" Marine smiled at the guard. She gave the thumbs up as I rolled my aqua eyes at her.

"The gates are open, go on in." Marine and I bowed to the guards then we passed through the gate.

When we entered Riften, it was so not what I was expecting; there were homeless folk on the streets, smoke was covering the sky which means pollution, and I can't explain anything else. I saw a woman in iron armor talking with a man about having a run with the thieves' guild. So it's true, Riften is the home of thieves. Then there was this man standing by pole looking at me and Marine with dark eyes.

"I don't know you two. You girls in Riften lookin' for trouble?" He asked us.

"What if we are, jackass?" Mar said like a badass.

The man narrowed his eyes and growled at us.

"Then you brats will be sent to the orphanage." He answered.

"Sir, we are not here to cause trouble just passing by like good people." I intervened.

"There are no good people in Riften, girl. The Black-Briars have Riften in their pockets and the Thieves Guild watchin' their behinds, so you better keep your noses out of their business."

"What's a Black-Briar?" I questioned. The man looked surprised of my question.

"The Black-Briars are not what's they're who's."

"Okay and how do you know them?"

"Me? I'm Maul, I watch the streets for'em. If you need dirt on anything I'm your guy, but it gonna cost ya."

"We have some things to do, but we'll ask you if something comes to mind." Marine tells him before gripping on my arm and dragging me across the bridge and into an inn.

"Marine, what the hell?!"

"Shut up, he'll be at the docks if you wanna play twenty questions with him. Also, WHAT'S a Black-Briar! They are snobby rich people who are total shits. However, Ingun isn't like her family, so she gets a pass."

"So they're like the Kardashians."

"Basically, let's get some beer." This has to be the hundredth time I rolled my eyes at her.

Marine skipped merrily to the bar, a lizard women stopped cleaning as Marine a seat. I followed after her; took a seat beside her. Before I could as the lizard lady what's on the menu, I caught someone coming towards us from the corner of my eye. A man with red hair and beard in a black wool coat was walking towards us.

"Marine?"

"That's Brynjolf." Marine says.

"What are you-" I was cut off as the strange man appeared beside me.

"I recon you kids have never done an honest day's work with all that gold you're carrying in your pockets, am I right?" The man spoke.

"I-I'm sorry, what are you talking about?" I inquired him, Marine groaned at me.

"He's saying that we may have a lot of money in our pockets, but we didn't earn them from regular hard labor; mining, fishing, carpenter, lumbering, est."

The man was amused by my cousin's reversion of his statement.

"You know the thief's language, I like that."

"How could you possibly know how we earn our payments?"

"It's all about sizing up your mark, lad." I am confused to what he's discussing about.

"Um…"

"Status, Glaze. And people say you're smart."

"Well I'm sorry if I can't comprehend this kind of knowledge." I turned to the man. "And our wealth is none of your concern, Monsieur."

The unknown male blinked and raised an eyebrow at me.

"I know you didn't just call him sir in French."

I grinned at her as response to her. Then I felt the man place his hand on my back.

"Hehehe, that's where you're wrong, girl. You see money is my business." I tilted my head at him, which made him grin. "Maybe you should get a taste of what I mean."

"Wh-Wh-What do you mean?"I backed away from him till my back hit Marine's arm.

"Glacier, will you relax! Just listen to his schema."

"Thank you, I have an errand to perform in a moment and I need an extra pair of hands to pull it off. Think you lads wanna be those hands?" I have a bad feeling about this. "Extra hands get well-paid."

"We'll do it, what'd we have to do?" Marine answered for us.

"Marine!"

"It's simple, I'm going to cause a distraction to the town's folk and you girls will steal Madesi's silver ring from his strongbox under his stand. Once you two have the ring, Place it in Brand-Shei's pocket without him noticing."

Wait we're stealing a ring from someone and placing the blame on someone else? Oh dear God, this is…dreadful. Why? Why put blame on someone who had nothing to do with anything? It's unethical.

My mouth was covered by my twin's hand.

"We'll do it and we'll like. Won't we, Glacier?" She shot me an evil smile before removing her hand.

"Fine." I answered in defeat.

"I'll meet you kids outside by my stand, be ready."

As soon as he left the inn, I glared at Marine for a long time; she ignored it and ordered Lydia to stay in the inn. Then she made eye contact with me and motioned me to follow her outside, which I did. Once we were outside, Marine turned to me.

"Glacier, I know you're mad and you don't understand what the fuck is going on here, but I will tell you this. When we're done with this schema I'll tell you everything about Riften and the bullshit going on in Skyrim. Deal or no deal?"

"Really Marine?"

"Will just answer the damn question!"

"Alright deal."

"Good."

'I am not going to like this shit at all.' I pondered as I followed behind Marine to the man near his stand.
