Chapter Thirteen: Dealing with the Devil
A. Brandon
Major J. Whitlock
"What's he not telling me Charlotte?"
"What?" Charlotte rounded to the inquiring eyes of Alice as the young human girl smirked at her. Charlotte hadn't been expecting the question… to be honest it'd swept her off her feet. She didn't know how to answer. It'd come on so suddenly, how could she be expected to be level headed when Alice was just demanding answers for questions Charlotte didn't know if she could answer or not.
"He's hiding something. There's something he's not telling me. And I want to know what it is." she replied as Charlotte sighed and shrugged her shoulders. Still at a loss as to how she should answer her inquisitive question. Char wanted Alice to trust her, and she knew that answering her questions would make it easier for her too, but she didn't know exactly just how much she could tell her without telling her too much, and putting them both in more unneeded danger.
"I don't know what to tell you Alice." Charlotte answered truthfully as she sighed and turned back to the window. She'd been staring out at the horses more and more frequently. Somehow seeing them both reassured her and cast an ever lasting sadness through her heart. Seeing them so free and happy made her hopeful for her future… but at the same time it clenched her heart to see them so genuinely content and wild while she was cramped up within the confines of the bedroom.
Her dreams were getting worse. She knew it was because of her being locked up so much, the lack of scenery let her mind wander within itself and this only proved to haunt her thoughts even more so. Alice was right when she'd stated that it was this room and the solitude that would surely be the death or her… and she wasn't exaggerating.
"Peter said there was two of him. Mr. Whitlock… and the Major." she stated as Charlotte's eyes found Alice's pondering form. "How did that happen?" she asked as Charlotte sighed before listening closely to the sounds within the house and surrounding estate. Charlotte owed the girl, she knew this, but she wasn't too keen on facing the Major's wrath if he heard her telling Alice stories that didn't exactly belong to her.
"He told you his story?"
"Yes." Alice replied as Charlotte sighed... her only reasoning what that perhaps if he'd already told her his own story, Charlotte couldn't see the problem in expanding a little on it. It might make her appreciate the control he has now anyways.
"Jasper Whitlock is who he was as a human. Compassionate, and caring… but headstrong and stubborn." she smirked slightly. "When he became a vampire, the bloodlust and vampire wars hardened him and changed him. He created an alter-ego, the Major, to deal with all the pain and anger he felt. When he got away from that life of pain and anguish, then Jasper reappeared, but triggers like intense emotions, and fear and authority push him back and forth between the two." Charlotte explained as Alice just simply stood unmoving, listening to her explanation. "Jasper is more calculated, concerned and careful. The Major is his counter part. He's head strong, and acts before he thinks. He's strong, and commands attention. He doesn't take anything, from anyone… and he… I don't know… he's the Major. That what and who he is." Charlotte sighed as Alice nodded. "The Major is stronger... it's his vampire self, but the human part of him is still there. His humanity is still there. Does that kind of answer your question?" she asked as Alice shrugged slightly. She didn't completely understand, she wasn't too informed on the subject of alter ego's… and she was pretty sure they didn't just come and go as the Major's seemed to. But she imagined because of what he was… he was a special case.
"I don't know. It just seems like there's something missing… something he's not telling me from his whole story." Alice sighed as her arms wrapped around her torso, the strength from her arms some what holding together the unrequited shiver that ran up through her body and wracked her small shoulders. "Like why he keeps me here, locked up all day long. Why doesn't he just kill me and get it over with? Why let me live?" she asked as Charlotte sighed. "And why be so civil, sometimes... he sends you around, and you act like a friend more than anything... I just want to know why."
"I think that's up to him to tell you that Alice…" after a moment to contemplate her answer, Charlotte answered as simply as she could without trying to throw Alice off as she observed her reaction carefully.
"I'm just sick of not knowing. Of being stuck up here everyday. Of watching my life pass me by and not knowing completely why." she sighed sadly. "I just miss… I don't know… living."
"Show him he can trust you Alice. Maybe he'll give you a little more leeway if he does." Charlotte offered as Alice just laughed at the absurd implement.
"I think it'd be easier to scale the side of the house and try running off that way." she sighed sadly. "How am I to prove him anything when I never even seen him? When he's never around."
"You're just going to have to be creative Alice." Charlotte sighed as she heard the boys race across the estate, heading towards the front door as Alice watched Charlotte quizzically. She'd gotten fairly good at being able to pick out when the boys were home or not, the free air about Charlotte always shifted just enough to tell her when they came back from wherever it was they disappeared to throughout the days they were gone.
"They're home…" she stated as Charlotte turned too, surprise only just lingering on her face as she wiped her emotional pallet clean before nodding her head yes to Alice's rhetorical question.
After a few moments of silence, and much debate on Alice's part, she finally made good on the favour that Charlotte had promised her two weeks before, and asked a question she thought seemed more ludicrous than anything she'd ever done before… more stupid, too. "Can you get him for me please Charlotte?" Alice asked as the vampire didn't bother to mask the surprise from her face while Alice continued. "I'd do it myself but…"
"I'll send him up." Charlotte said with a slight grin as she walked out of the room and down the stairs, turning to the two laughing boys as she smirked at their foolish antics and the mud caked on their clothing.
"Major…" Charlotte called to his attention as Peter whisked to her side and planted his lips on her cheek with a hearty laugh and grin. He looked genuinely happy. "I take it you enjoyed your outing than?" she asked with a grin as Peter's hands found her waist as he turned her to face him straight on as he crashed his lips to hers with vigour before she pulled away slightly breathless, even for a vampire.
"He's still got it Char." Peter grinned. "The sick bastard's still got it…" he smirked, looking to his long time friend with a grin as Charlotte laughed and shook her head.
"Major…" she called out again as he pulled his attention back to his captain's mate, and long time confidant. "She asked for you." she stated, those few words shocking him more now than ever before as the Major nodded, the grin from earlier still on his face as he turned to ascend the stairs. Jasper had enjoyed his afternoon, and he was sure nothing was about to change that.
Charlotte was pleased he'd be happy when he finally got up the nerve to confront Alice again. Perhaps she would finally get a chance to see him at ease. See the man he could be instead of the monster that she'd seen in the past. The head strong Major that craved her body, soul, and blood.
Knocking on the door, Jasper grinned slightly as he walked in, still excited and happy from his earlier sparring with Peter. When he heard the soft feminine 'come in', he entered the room, forgetting his dishevelled look and stepped in, closing the door behind him as his eyes found her form staring out the window once more. He had to assume she enjoyed the view, it seemed like every time he saw her, she was staring out the window.
Looking at her now, he tried to remember the state of the girl when she'd first entered the house. Malnourished and sickly thin, with heavy bags under her bright eyes, and a lifeless spirit. Over the weeks she'd come to eat more as Charlotte brought her something new to snack on everyday. The colour had returned to her skin, and she was up and moving around more often. The Major also noticed how she'd filled out slightly more than she was when he'd first set eyes on her. She was still questionably thin, but this was the healthiest he'd seen her look since arriving.
"I want to leave." she stated boldly, turning to him as the elated feelings from before quickly left him as his expression and mood turned sour.
"No." he stated emotionlessly as Alice's angered flared slightly before she swallowed her sharp tongue that threatened to make an appearance as she sighed in frustration.
"You never let me finish."
"You will not leave-"
"I will let you feed from me." she stated, cutting him off with an expressionless voice as the Major froze, the shock and surprise coursing through his body as he tried to process what she'd just told him.
"What?"
"I know it will happen eventually." she explained as he just watched her face for any unwarranted signs of deception. "I've seen it."
"Then why tell me?"
"Because I want to leave… more than anything I want out of this room." she finally cracked as her voice wavered only just. "I will promise you I will not struggle, or complain when you wish to feed, provided you let me leave this room."
"I cannot let you just wander around."
"Send Charlotte with me than… but for god sakes don't keep me locked up in here anymore. Please." she begged as he sighed and watched her carefully.
"You will let me bite you? Let me sink my fangs into your neck, and leave you life in my hands as I drain you? Drink your blood whenever I please without complaint?" he asked as she nodded, the slight recoil there when he mentioned drinking her blood in such vivid detail.
"I'd hope you'll leave me with enough to function..." she answered truthfully, looking slightly defeated. "I know if you wanted me dead I'd be dead by now… so yes…"
"And all you want is the opportunity to leave your room?"
"Yes."
"How can I be sure you'll be good to your word?" he asked as she took a deep breath and tried to think of something to say in which to convince him, when in a flash he was directly in front of her, his body pressed to hers as his left hand grabbed for her waist to pull it into his while his right grasped her hair and tilted her head to the side, exposing her neck for him as she tensed, and her breathing caught in her throat. Her pulse quickened under his touch as the Major smirked at her body's reaction to him. "How do I know you'll be a good little girl and comply?" he whispered as his cool breath fanned over the delicate skin on her neck as he leant his head down until his lips were only millimetres from the vein in her neck.
With a deep chuckle, he supported her body as it fell into his. Loving the way her skin and body felt against his own, the the grin from earlier made it's way back onto his face as the heat from her skin and body warmed the Major to his core. Running his hand over her hip, he smirked as he heard the slight hitch in her breath before he leant down to press his cold lips to her neck, directly where he would eventually sink his teeth in and taste her sweet blood. Once more her pulse jumped at his contact as he sucked slightly on her delicate skin before pulling back only just.
"Mmmm... You've got yourself a deal darlin'." he whispered with a successful smile as Alice tried to regulate her breathing and pulse, not even realizing her eyes had drifted shut.
When she realized this, they shot open only to be met with an empty room. And as she curled back into her bed, wondering what in the hell she'd managed to get herself into, the Major sat downstairs with his Captain and Charlotte, a grin settling into his face as he fantasized over the sweet taste of his mate's blood… and how much sooner he'd have the pleasure of marking her as his own.
