Chapter Twenty-Two : Makings

Alice sighed as Peter shook his head at her refusal to comment on his statement and simply lead her back inside, sitting her at a table close to the open door of the balcony as he watched her with scrutinizing eyes.

Alice Brandon could deny it all she wanted. To herself, to Charlotte, to the Major… but Peter knew. Peter could tell. The way her eyes followed his every move, the way she winced only just when the two became particularly close on the dance floor. It was there, and it was almost painfully obvious the more he sat beside her.

Meanwhile, she stood there and watched as he laughed with her, talked with her, and smiled like it was an everyday occurrence. Carefree… unforced. She watched as he complimented her, talked to her… like a person. A living (debatably) breathing person, and Alice envied that. She was jealous of the way he talked to her, as an equal, an equivalent to himself, where as Alice was a patron, a blood bag… a trophy for him to cart around on his arm. And the more she watched, the more the jealousy just seemed to build up inside of her. Like a fire in a steam engine. He was just feeding the fire, but no one dared to put her in gear to release all that pressure… it just built and built and built until she'd eventually explode.

For the first time since leaving the house this evening… Alice truly and full heartedly considered making a run for it. He was distracted, and for some reason, just being there… watching him throw his attention out for that other drop dead gorgeous woman made a pain swell inside of her. If she could get away then fine… she had a new motive to push her escape. She knew who would be searching for her, and she had a better understanding of who he would send to find her. She'd be more careful this time, she knew what was out there now. And hell, if he managed to find her, he'd drag her kicking and screaming back to the mansion… and if she got left in her room, Alice could think up at least a dozen different ways to end herself just standing there that she could use to end herself. And at this point, after everything, she wouldn't put it past herself. Alice simply had nothing else left.

"Whatever it is you're plannin' darlin'… don't do it." a rough Texan voice called out behind her as Alice jumped, remembering Peter was still seated behind her while she was caught up in her trance. Charlotte out being escorted around the dance floor by a few select males, all very attractive, but obviously having nothing on the love she carried for Peter. He and Char both knew it too. Turning to look at him, Alice sighed at the knowing look on his face as she turned back to the party. Her eyes instinctively finding his form again as she swallowed once more the sickening jealousy that pooled in the back of her throat.

"What do you care?" she asked quietly, almost defeated as he rose from his seat and moved to take one closer to her, pulling up the one beside her, watching Alice's face and the emotions that came and went across it as he followed her gaze to find it's culprit as non other than the Major once more.

"If it bothers you so much… go out after him. Make him see why that southern slut ain't gotta patch on you." Peter winked as Alice chuckled, a small smile gracing her features as Peter smiled down at the young girl. She was still so naïve, still so blind to the world around her, the people around her… but she could learn. She could pick these things up along the way. It was just a matter of how much she wanted to learn… how much she wanted to see.

"Yeah right." she scoffed, shaking her head as Peter groaned and collapsed back into his seat before trying once more, a tactic he thought might stir some kind of a reaction from her.

"You know… for as long as I've known him, he's only ever looked at two women the same way." Peter stated suddenly as Alice's attention was pulled from Kasper to Peter as he smiled and winked at her. "Only once in his life time has he ever felt anything real for anyone other than his family…"

"Maria…"

"True, he looked at her in a way I'll never understand…" he exclaimed as Alice's shoulders instinctively sunk slightly in defeat, and it was then that all of his assumptions just fell into place. "but he's never quite looked at anyone the way he looks at you as well…" Peter explained as the Major's gaze turned away from the woman, and to the duo standing there as he heard himself enter the conversation. His eyes hardened slightly at Peter's revelation, but Peter only challenged him back with his own eyes when the vampire concubine glued to his arm pulled his attention back to her. "And he sure as hell ain't felt about anyone the way he feels about you… he just won't admit it."

"Why are you telling me this?" Alice finally asked as Peter sighed and stepped from his seat into her line of vision. He was handsome, she'd give him that… and ever since meeting him, she knew he only wanted to look out for her. But like Charlotte in the beginning, Alice just didn't know how much she could trust him yet. His only loyalty was to the Major… and if anything, that alone put Alice at more risk than she'd care for.

"I know it doesn't seem like it now. But you'll make each other happy. The Major it family, and I've watched him destroy himself for over a century. So if I've finally found the one thing that's gonna make him happy. I'm not gonna let a little jealousy ruin the only thing he's got left to look forward too." Peter answered seriously as Alice gave him a questionable look. To be honest… she didn't want to be his happiness. It just meant she was never going to leave. Never going to get her freedom back as long as he was still around. "You know I still see the dials spinning darlin'… yer not very inconspicuous." he smirked as Alice shook her head and turned her back to the crowd, stepping out onto the balcony as Peter silently followed, the summer breeze coursing through the loose curls in Alice's hair as she stifled a sigh of contentment at the feel.

"I don't want to be his happiness." she stated suddenly. Fill with anger and resentment as Peter watched her carefully. Judging her reaction, looking for any truth in her words as she spat them out in his direction, more for her benefit than for his… like she was trying to convince herself. "I don't want this… any of this. I don't want these feelings for him. I don't want any feelings for him…" she vented as Peter smirked and shook his head.

"But they're there." he grinned as she turned to him with a full flown glare set deep in her orbs. The beginning of a tear gathering in her pretty brown eyes.

"He took everything from me. How can I trust him? How is it possible for me to even feel this way after everything he'd put me through?" she demanded. "I can't feel like this. It isn't right! What does that make me it I keep having this feelings for him?" she asked as Peter smiled and stepped closer to her, lifting her chin so her eyes met his as he grinned at her and tried to give her his best sure, reassuring and supportive smile.

"It makes you human, sweetheart." he whispered with a wink as she stepped away from him. A tear in her eye as he watched her recoil and throw the walls back up around her emotions and thoughts. Shutting everyone out as her head shook with determined disbelief, and stubborn intentions.

"I'm not human Peter." she practically cried out quietly as he sighed. "He shouldn't even have this effect on me and my body and my mind and my feelings. It's not fair. It's not right. I mean it can't even be possible…" she tried to explain it to herself as Peter watched her in disarray as she shut down and blocked herself up. Trying to come up with an explanation and something to blame for every little miscarry in her life. Trying to find some reason in all the hectic events taking place around her. She was so caught up in drowning in her own little world of question and disarray and fear, that she failed to even see the Major take stance behind her as he watched Alice Brandon break down in front of him once more.

"I've been promising myself every since I can remember to be the strong one. To lead my own life, and be independent, and do things my own way. To not just bend over backwards for someone else's opinions. But I mean look at me! He took everything from me and it just kills me that he's with someone else. Not because I want him to be sad and alone. But because I, me, of all people, wants to be the one to make him smile, make him happy and pleased. And I'm just rolling over and giving up! So what does that make me Peter? Huh? To feel this way? To act this way? I don't even know who I am anymore! Who I've turned into… how can every little thing he says and does effect me? I mean what does that say about me? What does that make me?!" she demanded as the threatening tear finally escaped the confines of her eye, sliding down her cheek as she wiped it away furiously. Raged that she'd been weak enough to cry here, in the presence of all these people.

Watching as she broke down in front of his eyes, Peter was still half watching the Major as the 'Jasper' still left in him, the part of him that cared for humans in general, let his heart break for the hurt girl… while the Major's first response was to appease his mate and eliminate anything, anyone or any thought that had possibly made her upset or cause her to question him in anyway.

"That makes you my make." his rough, husky voice stated determinedly as as soon ass the words left his stone cold lips, Alice's small body whirled around so fast in both surprise and fright that her feet crossed in her death trap heels and sent her spiralling forwards into his arms, her eyes locked with his blood red ones as the mix of fear, curiosity, and surprise flooded her system.

"W-what?" she finally managed to choke out as the Major smirked and scooped her up, one arm supporting her upper body as the other took out her knees like lightening, swiftly and smoothly as her heart hammered behind her ribcage in her chest. Alice could barely function a coherent thought as her body flew up into his arms and his cold lips pressed into the pulse point in her neck, sending electrifying signals of shock through her system as she shivered against his touch, and the smile that appeared on his handsome face at her response.

In one word, he'd answered Alice question and also staked, to a mansion full of the world's most powerful vampire, his unfathomable claim on this human girl.

"That makes you mine."
