Kurt's day had gone from bad to worse. First off, Pavarotti had woken him up by squealing like a banshee at 4.19am, leaving him absolutely exhausted when he headed off to school. This had meant he'd been paying no attention in English and now he had no idea what the homework was. Then they'd all sat around mourning the absence of their favourite Warbler (if Blaine ever left, Kurt thought to himself, the Warblers will be completely lost). And now, Blaine had stopped replying to his texts. It was making Kurt anxious. He wondered if Blaine's dad was aware of how often the texted each other, and shuddered.
As it was, the Warbler meeting was crawling by like a dying slug: occasionally showing signs of life only to return to dull silence. Wes was sitting with his head on his hands and his hands on the table, staring off into the distance, and no-one had the heart to bring him out of depressed stupor.
Hugo, true to his character, was digging into a share bag of chocolates, causing a welcome yet slightly inappropriate break in the quiet every now and then when the packet rustled. He offered the bag to Kurt, who batted it away distractedly, before giving a handful of chocolates to Stefan.
Eventually, the end of the meeting came around and the boys all filed out more quickly and more sombrely than Kurt had ever seen before.
Kurt was left sitting alone on the sofa, staring dejectedly at the spot next to him where Blaine usually was.
"Kurt."
Kurt looked up. Hugo was peering roudn the door at him.
"Hmm?"
"Are you okay?"
Kurt paused for a moment. "Of course I'm okay," he smiled eventually. "Why wouldn't I be?"
"Well, you're looking like a lost puppy without Blaine here," Hugo shrugged, smiling cheekily. When Kurt didn't respond, he came further back into the room. "Why don't you just ask him out?" he asked.
Kurt started and looked at Hugo in shock. "I can't do that!" he exclaimed, surprised by the sheer amount of panic that that question had caused.
Hugo paused, one hand on the doorknob. "Why not?" he said simply.
"Well..." Kurt's shoulders sagged, and he frowned. "What if he says no?"
Hugo pulled the door open, and just before he stepped through it asked, "but what if he says yes?"
As the door clicked shut, Kurt's phone buzzed.
I promise I'll be back for Valentine's. Just for you :)
And suddenly Kurt found himself wondering exactly that. What if Blaine did say yes?
