Chapter Nineteen: Shattered

The newly assigned brunette made his way through the airport of Kalos, glancing around. He had sunglasses and a black hoodie on, covering his spiky auburn hair. He figured they were enough for disguise. He couldn't let the paparazzi find him, otherwise he had trouble. As he was about to leave the airport, he suddenly spotted a flash of chartreuse hair. He couldn't believe it.

It was Drew.

Making sure he wasn't attracting any attention, Gary slowly made his way towards the information counter at where Drew was standing. "Drew," he breathed, heading closer to him. All of a sudden, Drew seemed to begin swaying dizzily. Noticing something was wrong, Gary broke out in a faster pace. "Drew!"

Everyone turned to look at them as Gary managed to reach his friend in time, catching the green-haired assassin in his arms. As he did, the hood over his head slipped off, revealing his head. The only thing disguising him was his sunglasses, which really weren't much of a disguise. "Shit," he cursed under his breath as everyone around them turned to look.

"Hey, that's Gary Oak!"

"Oh my gosh, he's holding Drew! Is he okay?"

"Someone call an ambulance!"

Gary narrowed his eyes as a large crowd formed around them. So much for trying to not be noticed. Everything happened so quickly, in a matter of few minutes a large crowd had formed around them, paparazzi were flashing shots and paramedics were rushing towards them. "Drew!" Gary called out again in despair as the paramedics took him onto a stretcher. "What happened to him?" he asked demandingly to the paramedics.

The nurse looked at Gary, then down at Drew, who was being examined as he was taken into the ambulance, and frowned. "We don't exactly know, it seems like a very strange case. It may be because he was released from hospital too soon, we'll find the reason when he's at the hospital," she explained.

Nodding slightly, Gary pulled his hoodie back over his head. "Not again," he muttered to himself, getting into the ambulance along with his friend.

Dawn had finished packing the little things she had brought with her for the small break and headed downstairs with her luggage. "All ready to go, mum!"

"Wonderful," Johanna replied. "Oh, just wait a few minutes, I'll be back." She sighed, shaking her head as she headed off upstairs. "I can't believe I almost forgot," she muttered to herself as she left.

While she was waiting, Dawn decided to head outside for the last time. It was almost midnight, and her flight was in an hour and a half. Sighing, she sat on a swing which hung from a tree branch in her garden and looked up, the sky the same shade of blue as her hair. She flinched, feeling a shadow over her. As she turned around, her eyes widened but didn't have a chance to scream as her attacker already had a hand over her mouth.

"Dawn. Don't scream, it'll gain you nothing. I'm not here to kill you."

He slowly removed his hand from her mouth as she turned around slowly, shaking. She looked at his face, emotionless and only visible by the dim light of the moon. "Paul," she breathed. She couldn't help but notice that he actually didn't call her Troublesome, for once. Then, she came to her senses and jumped off, taking a few steps back. "How do I know I can trust you?" she asked, glaring.

Paul shrugged, taking a few steps towards her. "You can't," he simply replied as Dawn kept stepping back to keep the distance. She felt a wall stop her from stepping backwards and cursed under her breath.

He pinned her to the wall, his hands blocking her on both sides of her head, leaning on the wall. "But I'm asking you to."

"I've had enough," Dawn said, trying to pull away. But Paul wasn't done, as he took her wrists and pinned them on the wall. "What are you doing? I'm not going to talk to an assassin! Why haven't you killed me-"

"You're so annoying," Paul deadpanned, cutting her off. "I don't want to kill you, and I never have," he said, narrowing his eyes. "Now shut up and listen-"

"Dawn! Dawn? Where are you?"

"Damn," he muttered under his breath. "Go," he said, stepping away and releasing her.

Feeling slightly surprised, Dawn quickly walked away. She stopped as she heard Paul speak once more.

"We're coming for you, watch out."

Her eyes widening, Dawn turned around to look at him again. She narrowed her eyes, staring into the darkness. He was already gone.

"Dawn? Where have you been?" Johanna said, coming out onto the porch. Without bothering to listen to Dawn's answer, she hurried and gave Dawn a box. "Open this when you get to Kalos with your friends, okay?" She looked at her watch, eyes widening. "And we have to go! Come on!"

"Thanks, mum," Dawn said, taking the box in her hands. "Yeah, let's go," she said, other things on her mind. She was frustrated, worried. Although, she did trust Paul deep down, and knew he would never harm her.

Or would he?

"Let's go, May," Brendan said, pointing at a lounge. "Our gate's over there, let's check out the first class lounge!" Once again, Kalosian Idol had their flights booked on business class with Kalos Airways.

"Right," May said, following him with a smile. Every smile she had since her disappeared were fake, forced. She took a seat opposite Brendan, placing her bag next to her. For the first time since her family disappeared, she smiled for real. "I'm excited to see the others again."

Brendan rested his cheek on his fist, raising an eyebrow and smirking. "It's only been a week, you know."

"I know," May said with a sigh. She looked out the window next to her, watching as a large plane took off. "With everything that's happened, I really need their comfort."

The ruby-eyed boy hummed in agreement, adjusting his white hat. He smirked, turning to May. "Just because I care about you, doesn't mean I'll let you win Kalosian Idol."

May let out a small laugh, nodding. "That would be no fun now."

Brendan narrowed his eyes as he saw May's laugh disappear as abruptly as it began and how her words had no tone. He saw her smile fade and her eyes flicker back down, emotionless. "Right," he agreed, not taking his eyes off her. He had to find a way to make her herself again, and get rid of her feelings for Drew. How he would do that, he didn't know.

After several hours in the sky, the two Hoenn natives landed back in Kalos. Sunglasses on, the two walked through the airport, completely surrounded by paparazzi and fans. "Excuse me, are you two dating?" one reporter, who was to close for May's liking, asked.

"No," May replied, looking away. She felt Brendan take her wrist, pulling her through.

Groups of fangirls started screaming in excitement as Brendan walked by, holding their cheeks. "Brendan! Ah, he's so much cuter in real life!"

Slightly lowering his sunglasses, Brendan shot them a wink, smirking. This caused the fangirls to start squealing even louder. "DID YOU SEE THAT? OH MY GOSH! JENNY, HE JUST WINKED AT US!"

May rolled her eyes playfully as she heard the ruby-eyed boy chuckle beside her. She stopped abruptly as she heard one of the reporters mention Drew. "Sorry, what was that?" she asked, back-stepping.

The reporter seemed taken aback for a few seconds, but managed to regain her composure. "Oh, um, Drew. We were wondering if you knew about what happened to him when he was released from hospital-"

"Yes," May said sharply, interrupting the reporter. "Oh, sorry. What happened?"

"Here," she replied, handing May a magazine. "Page sixteen."

"Thank you," the brunette replied, giving a small bow. May couldn't help but smile slightly as the reporter got all flustered, she loved the feeling of her fame.

After her and Brendan made their way out of the airport, they were escorted into a limo. On the way there, May thought back to when she was in a limo for the first time, before the world knew her name. In a simple hoodie and uggs, and no one gave her a second look. The day she met Drew. Or, the day she thought she met Drew.

She opened up the magazine, flicking to the sixteenth page. Her eyes widened as she read through the article. He was back in hospital, again? She questioned herself about why Gary would be at the airport if he had already left a while ago. She narrowed her eyes, noticing something wasn't adding up.

"We're here, May," Brendan said, cutting May out of her thoughts. "Let's go," he said excitedly, getting out of the car with a large grin.

"Right," she replied, other things on her mind. She stepped out of the car, her blue orbs looking up at the large mansion. Brendan and May entered the house, walking into the kitchen/lounge area.

"May!" the brunette heard someone squeal behind her, before being hugged tightly. "Leaf and Misty are upstairs, let's go!"

"O-okay!" she stuttered, being pulled away by her wrist.

"We have so much to talk about, and something really important to tell you," Dawn said, still pulling her friend by the wrist as she trotted up the marble staircase.

They entered the room, Leaf and Misty turning to look at them. "May!" they called out in unison, grinning at the sight of their food-loving friend. The four friends chatted for a minute, then the air became strangely serious and tense around them.

"You first," Leaf said, implying for May to tell her bad news first.

"Okay," May said, taking a small breath. She explained everything from when she landed in Hoenn to when she arrived at Brendan's house. Dawn didn't look surprised, as she already knew, but Leaf and Misty looked shocked.

"I'm so sorry, May," Leaf said sympathetically.

Misty smiled reassuringly, patting her friend's back. "I'm sure they'll find them soon."

Sniffing, May managed to force a smile and look back up. "Well, it's your turn now."

"Oh, um," Misty began nervously, shifting uncomfortably. "Well... you know that guy you met all those years ago at the..." She trailed off, hesitating, "- assassin place?"

Memories flooded her mind as she heard Misty say those words. She thought she'd never see that boy again, but there was a time when she thought she had found him. During the tsunami, when she woke up and looked into Drew's eyes. But then she shook off the thought, knowing it wasn't possible. She nodded, urging Misty to continue.

"Well," Misty hesitated again, "he's Drew-"

May's eyes widened.

"-and this whole time, he's been on a mission to assassinate you."

As she heard Misty speak those words, May felt everything, all of her feelings, all the light inside her, shatter.

"It's a pleasure seeing you again," Dr. Hayman said as Gary entered the hospital room. Once again, Drew was laying in the bed- unconscious.

Ignoring the doctor's greeting, Gary made his way to Drew. "What's wrong with him?" He turned to Jess, narrowing his eyes. "Tell me!"

"No need to be so rude, Oak," she said, smirking slightly. "I'm the only one that can help him, you know."

Glaring at her, Gary approached her intimidatingly. "You did something to him, didn't you?"

Letting out a small chuckle, she put her glasses on and picked up her clipboard. "Did I?" Amused at the auburn-haired assassin's death stare, she continued. "I suppose I should tell you what's happened to him. Hm, let's see," she said, scanning her clipboard, smirking. "Ah."

Jess sighed mockingly, putting on a sad face. "I'm afraid he never recovered from the toxic running through his body. It looks like... he's in a coma."

"A coma? Again?" Gary said, glaring at the young doctor. "It was you! You did something!"

"My, my," she said, "so accusing. If you're like that, I can put him to sleep forever. You wouldn't want that now, would you?" After being satisfied with Gary's silence, she continued on. "And this coma is a long-term one. A year or two, the minimum time."

Gary's eyes widened as he heard her words. Suddenly, he was filled with a raging hate for the brunette doctor. "Why... why would you do this?"

She smiled at him sweetly. "Because I want Drew to be mine, dear."

"Now, now," Lysandre said, entering the cell of May's family. "How many days has it been?"

Wally looked up in fear, shaking. "Th-three... it's been three d-days."

"And how many days did Emerald have to show up?"

"Th-three..."

Smirking, Lysandre walked around their cell. He was amused by the family's fearful expressions. "I thought Emerald would be selfless and show up. I suppose all assassins really are heartless." He pulled out a gun, holding it to Wally's mother's head, cocking his head slightly. "Don't you think?"

"Please, not Wally," she replied, sobbing helplessly.

In those few minutes, three, loud gunshots could be heard around the building, causing birds around there to scatter. Followed by a large round of laughter, of course.
