Missing Moon
Part 1
Murasakibara was walking from his newly discovered – and currently the cheapest – candy shop back to his dorm in the evening. He opened the package he'd just bought and while doing so, the bracelet on his left wrist jingled. It was a gift from Mido-chin. The greenette had given it to him as a present for Atsushi's birthday, saying that bells were Libra's main lucky item. The bracelet had tiny yellow bells and orange carrots attached to it. It was a strange combination one couldn't find easily and Atsushi suspected the carrots had been added by his Mido-chin afterwards.
The purplette shook his left hand to make more jingling sounds. He liked the new shop, favored the candy in his mouth, fancied the jingling and loved his bracelet. The carrots kept reminding his boyfriend somehow and life felt nice and green.
Murasakibara wasn't able to find anything inconvenient in his life, maybe except Mido-chin not being with him at the moment before that accident happened – he got mugged.
It would take some serious guts for a mugger to attack a man who is taller than 2 meters. Moreover, Atsushi was strong and fast even if someone had the courage to steal anything from him. However, his hands were full and he wasn't paying attention to his surroundings. It was getting dark; Akita streets were almost empty by then.
He didn't know what hit him when a man at average height struck him from behind with enough force to send the violet miracle off his feet. The mugger immediately took out Murasakibara's wallet from his left back pocket; he must have been watching him for a while to know where exactly he carried it. Moreover, the man had a pocket knife and he acted fast; he cut Murasakibara's right leg through his jeans. Then the man dashed.
Murasakibara felt that the wound wasn't too deep as he didn't feel the pain much right off. So he rose to his feet as fast as he could and took off after the man. He felt the piercing pain then, and it made Atsushi hesitate and run slower than his usual speed; therefore, gave an advantage to the mugger.
Murasakibara somehow managed to surpass the burning of his leg muscles and the tickling of gushing blood while running. Moreover, to his luck, there was a police officer who was actually doing his job properly while patrolling the neighborhood. Seeing two men on a chase, he trailed behind them right away.
Injured or not, the purplette was still an athlete who had been undergoing harsh training almost every day of his life since he was a child. He was the first one to catch up with the mugger. The man sensed Murasakibara right behind him; he swiftly turned around while swinging his knife.
Atsushi avoided the assault with a minor contact as the police officer arrived to the scene. He saw the knife in action, so the officer immediately proceeded to arrest the man.
Following events were nothing more than a blur for Murasakibara. He couldn't focus on anything because of the sight of his bracelet lying on the ground, broken. His heart sank with the ruptured pieces of bells and carrots.
"Hey, what's wrong with Murasakibara?" Okamura asked to Fukui, concern evident in his voice.
"Don't know. He's been like this since the incident couple of days ago." Fukui didn't show much interest but he indeed noticed their childish teammate's strange behavior.
Yosen's center usually didn't enjoy the training and wanted it to finish as quickly as possible all the while supporting a bored expression and working more than everyone else. Now, he looked fidgety; Murasakibara's mind was occupied with something else and he was absent-minded since the day he got attacked by a street robber.
Fukui acknowledged the mugger's desperation of attempting to steal from Murasakibara. But he couldn't think of a reason for his junior to be distressed.
"Could he be…" Okamura wasn't sure whether to say it or not, that got Fukui's attention back to him. "Molested?"
'Yep. He lost it.' The blond showed his thought on his expression.
"Hey! Shit like that happens, alright?"
"Himuro, do you know what's going on with Murasakibara?" Fukui chose to ignore his captain and called out to his junior who'd likely to know the deal of the kid.
"No. I couldn't talk to him yet." Himuro looked quite worried. It was true Atsushi would disappear once the training was over. They had tried to ask him during the short breaks but the purplette hadn't answered to any of their questions. When they had pushed it, coach had appeared every time and told them to continue with the drills if everyone had had so much energy to chat.
So no one was aware of what Atsushi's problem was.
"Murasakibara, come here. Let's look at your leg." Coach Araki called her center across the gym.
The school's nurse was there to check up Atsushi's injured leg. It wasn't serious enough not to let Murasakibara to train with everyone though his training wasn't as intense because the wound was still somewhat fresh. For the sake of not making it worse, coach would let the nurse take a look at it in the middle of practice for the last few days.
The nurse removed the bandage; the cut was long but not deep. The teenager was lucky for wearing jeans that day.
"How are you feeling?"
Murasakibara was about to say fine when he stopped short with his answer and thought. If the coach let him go early, he could have more time for dealing with his bracelet. He still needed to find small carrot accessories to replace the broken ones.
"It hurts bad." So he lied instead.
"That's not good." The nurse looked thoughtful and turned to the coach. "The wound is encrusted but it is better not to push him, Araki-san. We wouldn't want it to reopen."
Masako eyed Murasakibara intently for a few seconds. "Alright, you can go." She wasn't happy with letting one of her top players off the training but she wasn't going to take any risks.
Atsushi was smart enough not to make any triumphant expressions to his coach's face. After the nurse re-bandaged his leg, he packed up his stuff and headed to his dorm. He heard a faraway yell of double practice and protests while leaving the gym.
After a quick shower, Murasakibara sat on his chair and laid out his bracelet on his study table. He'd managed to find small bells but they weren't the same as the old ones. Moreover, no matter how many accessory stores he'd gone in, none of them had carrots.
Atsushi needed to talk to his Mido-chin. But let alone call, he couldn't send a text message to his boyfriend. He was hesitant because he couldn't predict Midorima's reaction once he'd learn Murasakibara had impaired his gift.
Furthermore, Midorima wasn't one to call or text. Without Murasakibara sending texts almost every day, their communication was severed. Although the purplette knew his boyfriend's habits, he was sort of resentful. Why wasn't his Mido-chin texting him at least a word of wonderment or his daily horoscope when Atsushi wasn't in touch with him for three days? Atsushi would take anything Midorima gave but there wasn't even that from the greenhead.
Murasakibara left alone his dismal thoughts for the time being and went outside for his hunt of carrots. There were places he hadn't looked yet; maybe he'd be successful this time.
"What the heck is wrong with him?" Miyaji asked, irritated.
Kimura followed his line of sight and saw Midorima staring at his phone's screen with a deep frown which could end up permanent on the greenhead's face. The miracle had been restless for the past few days because of unknown reasons to his seniors. The greenhead had been distracted by something for his own mind only and it'd been getting on Ootsubo's nerves. The captain was about to reach the end of his tolerance.
Ootsubo and Miyaji were ready to loom over Midorima and chew him out about his more than usual irritating attitude when Takao appeared beside them; he was snickering.
The seniors looked at him questioningly.
"Shin-chan got himself a girlfriend."
Kimura was astonished as Miyaji downright didn't believe it.
"What?! With that hair and attitude?" Miyaji had to wonder about the sanity of the girl and pondered for a short moment whether he should warn his loon junior or not. But then again, for two lunatics, there didn't seem to be any better available option other than choosing each other.
"How do you know?" asked Ootsubo skeptically because he had the idea that Midorima wouldn't just go ahead and very well speak about his relationships with Takao of all people.
"I caught him reading Cancer and Libra love compatibility."
"Tsk, wacko…" murmured Miyaji as Ootsubo shook his head in agreement. They had been aware of the miracle they got wasn't exactly lurking at the right side of mentality but they were still finding his infatuation with that daily show and superstitions utterly ridiculous.
"Why the hell is he glaring at his phone then?" Midorima looked as if he was going to lecture the device if it continued to refuse cooperating. Miyaji had the thought of even the loon miracle would have been less of a dreary arrogant jackass and more of a pleasant arrogant jackass once he was in a relationship with an actual person. He could never be sure though, with that arrogant jackass.
"I don't know." Takao wondered the same thing, either. He opted to ask it directly to the subject.
"He~y Shin-chan, what are you doing?" Takao called out to the miracle as he saw Midorima quickly flipped close his phone. "Your girlfriend doesn't reply? Don't worry, I'm sure she isn't cheating!"
Midorima flushed at the second but he only muttered "Bakao," and stomped away toward the middle of the court with a ball in his hands. The reaction lacked heart in it, in Takao's opinion. He was more curious now.
Midorima was agitated as he took shooting position and threw the ball with perfect accuracy. It didn't give him the usual satisfaction when the ball went through the hoop smoothly and this fact left a bad taste.
'What is that idiot thinking?' The miracle had sent to his lov—friend, in fact an old friend, maybe not the best or good friend but they were friends when it all came to a point so… What was Shintarou's line of thought again?
So Midorima's friend wasn't replying to his text messages; moreover, the green miracle had even called once but the other's phone had been off. It wouldn't have mattered, at all, if it hadn't been 3 days already. Who would have his phone switched off for 3 days? It must mean something was wrong and the person could be in some sort of trouble, right?
Or maybe, that idiot had dropped his phone into some sickly sweet substance; thus, the device was malfunctioning. It sounded more of a reasonable situation than anything serious. His lover- no, friend… Fine, so what if the 'friend' had the word 'boy' before it? Midorima guessed 'boyfriend' was better than saying lover or plain friend. It was an acceptable mixture of both terms and had many openings in case Midorima needed to explain anything to anyone. Not that he had any obligations to tell anything to Takao.
"Shin-chan!" Takao rooted next to him. Midorima reluctantly jerked in shock as he wondered if he had telepathic powers. The miracle seemed to call his basketball partner by thinking alone.
"What do you want?" Midorima grunted.
Takao stayed silent for a while before he was sure he would have his wanted reaction from the giant when Takao dropped the bomb. This would be just when the miracle was having another shooting position as he slightly jumped.
"When are you gonna introduce your girlfriend to us?"
The miracle's position had an awkward stand and he knew the moment ball left his fingers that it wouldn't be a perfect shot. He turned to Takao, opened his mouth to shout, yell but in his anger, he couldn't form any words, only fuming choking sounds. Takao was trying to hold his laughter in.
"We want to meet with the person who wooed our Ace and give our approval. Invite us to your next date!" Takao waited Midorima to decline, find excuses as such thing wasn't ever going to happen and so, give away the fact that he had a girlfriend without realizing. But instead, Midorima's eyes turned to the bench where his phone laid and frowned. He seemed lost in his thoughts.
"Shin-chan?" Takao dropped his teasing and got serious; his friend was troubled. It was time to help.
Midorima looked back at his partner; he remembered Takao's words but didn't have the will to scold. He turned away wordlessly and picked the ball in order to continue training.
Takao was going to pursue the moody giant but the coach finally noticed him. He decided to let it go for the moment.
Murasakibara came back to his dorm after a few hours, mopping and irritated. The hunt wasn't successful once again.
He didn't look for his key before entering; he never locked his door. When he entered, the purplette stopped short in his tracks. His room was occupied with his four teammates.
Himuro and Liu were sitting on the bed, Fukui on the spinning chair, and Okamura standing next to the window. They all turned to him once he'd made his entry. Fukui took a paper from the desk and held it in the air for Murasakibara to see what was written. It read 'INTERVENTION'.
Himuro stood up. "Come, Atsushi." He spoke with a smile while nudging the miracle to proceed into his own room. Fukui reluctantly got up from the chair for the purplette to sit.
Murasakibara complied with Himuro's poking and sat. He didn't understand what was going on though. What were they going to intervene with?
The quadruple circled around Murasakibara. They were mouthing to each other to decide for whom to start the session. It was left up to Himuro, as expected.
"Atsushi, you do know if you are going through a problem, you can talk to me, us, right? We will be there to support you no matter what. No one is judging you." Himuro spoke slowly, never losing the overly-caring smile. Someone snorted at his words. Himuro threw a glare at the trio before going back to smiling at Atsushi while patting the giant's shoulder.
Murasakibara was confused; did they know he broke his bracelet or…? Muro-chin's words weren't exactly making much sense for the purplette, and it got worse with Liu's question.
"Murasakibara, shall thou talk with a shrink?"
Sure the violet miracle was mopping and all, but did he really need to see a doctor for that?
"Why?" He vocalized his thoughts in his own way.
Thinking Murasakibara was playing hard to get, Okamura spun him around and put his hands heavily on the miracle's shoulders.
"You mustn't shun yourself, Murasakibara! People are bad and corrupted at this time and age. It happens to everyone these days, women and men. It wasn't your fault, don't blame yourself!" were what Okamura yelled at Murasakibara's face.
The issue his friends were intervening with completely lost its sense to the miracle.
"…What are you saying?"
"We are saying that," Himuro spun Murasakibara back to himself for the sake of looking into his eyes while saying "Atsushi, we know and we get it."
Instead of understanding violet eyes Himuro looked for, he met with a flummoxed frown.
"Get what?"
Fukui was the one who finally caught up with the fact that their assumption could be not so correct after all. He spun Atsushi before asking directly to get a confirmation.
"Are you molested or not?"
"…Am no~t!" The purplette's answer was as firm as he could muster since he was feeling rather dizzy all of a sudden.
His declare was ensued by a deafening silence.
"Are you sure?"
"'Course he is, stupid Chinrilla! I shoulda known better than listening to you." Fukui heaved an angry sigh. He felt like an idiot for believing even for a second to his captain's ridiculous estimation.
"Fukui-sama, thou art right. We shall never listen to Butt-Chin Gorilla ever again." Liu didn't miss the chance of bullying the sentimental gorilla.
Unappreciated as a captain, Okamura whined about always being antagonized by his two certain teammates, and was near to tears. To his usual dismay, no one spared a second glance.
"Then, Atsushi, what's bugging you?"
Murasakibara stayed silent before averting his eyes. "Nothing…"
Obvious denial rose up colorful strings of curses within Fukui. Before he could voice up any of them though, Okamura covered his mouth with his calloused hand.
"Don't lie. We know something is in your mind. Spill." Himuro narrowed his visible eye and tightened his hold on the purplette's shoulder. His voice was lowered and emitted silent threats. Murasakibara felt chill but couldn't look away from his babysitter.
The miracle didn't resist further; he opened the drawer of his desk and exposed the object of his despair to the quadruple. He turned his anticipating eyes towards them, waiting for his teammates to gasp in horror.
Fukui slapped Okamura's hand away with a glare. "And?"
Murasakibara looked at him in surprise. "My bracelet… it's broken."
"I see." The blond was refusing to believe in the reason. "So?"
"Did Midorima-kun give that to you?" Himuro grasped the situation since he was aware of the two miracles' relationship.
"Yes." Atsushi went back to look crestfallen. "And I broke it."
"But we can repair it, right?" The returnee softened his expression. He understood how Murasakibara must have been feeling down due to it.
The trio didn't see it as a problem and now, it was their turn to be confused. While Murasakibara was explaining to Himuro how he couldn't manage to find the exact same pieces of accessories, Fukui looked at Liu and Okamura, and murmured.
"I don't get it. What gives if that thing is ruptured?"
Okamura shrugged while Liu shook his head. They didn't understand the situation either.
Himuro answered the blond's question.
"It is a treasured gift from Atsushi's lover. Of course, he feels sad about it." The returnee spoke as if everything was loud and clear. Then he enjoyed watching his friends to have hemiplegia.
"Thou mean-"
"That Midorima-"
"These two-"
Images of two giant violet and green miracles together in an intimate way filled the trio's mind. They were petrified first, and then clutched their heads as they yelled in agony.
"Argh! My eyes! Burning!" Fukui was ready to poke his eye sockets to get rid of the images.
Okamura was indeed crying this time and loudly claiming this was the worst torture. Himuro was amused by his friends' sudden mental pain but when Liu actually began gagging, he snapped. A shouting fest erupted in the room.
Murasakibara didn't pay attention to the commotion right next to him. His mind was too occupied with the thoughts of his Mido-chin and the greenette's possible upcoming anger. Would Midorima hate him because of it? Atsushi couldn't be sure and it bugged him.
Shintarou checked his phone once more as he was leaving the school grounds. His heart leaped with the notification of 2 new messages. When he opened them, he was ready to run all the way to Kanagawa Prefecture just to smack couple of times a certain blond in the head. He fought the urge even though it was rather tempting as he deleted Kise's message without reading its content. The other one was from Momoi and Midorima had to consider changing his number.
He threw the innocent device into his bag. It was fine with Midorima if Murasakibara didn't want to talk to him. He always hated texting anyway. Receiving and sending texts were such a pest. It was better now that he didn't have to deal with these pointless trends the teenagers of this age and time had. Midorima had certainly more important things to do. Such as studying, training, perfecting his already perfect shooting form.
He didn't need the daily messages from Murasakibara which were always about the new tastes the purplette had found or the complaints about the boring training and his strict coach or the nice things 'Muro-chin' had done for him.
"Tch," if that Himuro was such a goody two shoes, then Murasakibara should have been with him instead of the stern Midorima. Those two had been having quite a fun time together according to Atsushi's short messages.
In any case, Midorima could certainly live without the daily drags and Murasakibara could be with his 'Muro-chin' for all he cared. There, everyone was happy. Though now Midorima's mind was popping up imagines of two Yosen players together, holding hands, smiling at each other with affection, sharing kisses, hugging and sleeping…
He stopped short with his next step. He scowled at the brick road under his feet in an attempt at figuring out the sudden rise of fury inside his chest.
After a tiring day which had been filled with sleeping in classes, training, and conquering all of the left accessory stores in Akita with the help of his teammates, Murasakibara finally came back to his dorm room to die on his bed and possibly revive a week later.
He fell heavily on the mattress, brooding over why he still hadn't heard any notification sound from his phone although it had been 4 days since he'd last texted to his boyfriend. He reached to the nightstand without looking, searching his phone with his hand. He couldn't find it.
"Ara?"
Murasakibara sat up, now checking his pockets. His phone was gone. Had he lost it again? He didn't remember where he last put it. He hadn't actually looked at his phone at all for the past few days. So he had no clue where it could be.
The violet miracle got up to search the room. After 5 minutes of opening and closing every drawer and cupboard, he examined the underneath of the study table and his bed. He finally detected the pieces of the device in the far corner under his bed. It must be fallen, though he didn't have any recollection of how or when that had happened.
Murasakibara put back the device together and waited for it to be switched on. Immediately several notifications appeared on the screen synchronized with the repeated beeping.
His heart leapt into his throat for short seconds, anxious, until he saw some of the messages were indeed from Midorima; the last one saying Murasakibara to call him as soon as the purplette got the message. The greenette sounded worried from the texts he had sent.
"Mido-chin…"
His Mido-chin was worried about him! Just as Murasakibara felt blessed with happiness, he also had guilt and newfound fright mounting. He was regretting for thinking his boyfriend didn't care about him as much as Murasakibara did about the greenette and he was still guilty of the impaired precious gift. He still wasn't sure of how Midorima would react to it and now he was going to be angry too because the purplette hadn't replied for so long. What should Murasakibara do?
He pondered shortly before deciding to stick to the initial plan of his which the violet miracle would call Midorima when he repaired the bracelet. So he dropped his phone on the bed but kept eyeing the device as if it could explode any moment.
The thick knocking on his door distracted him. Guessing it must be Himuro came to cheer him up, Murasakibara went to answer it.
"Muro-chin-"
It wasn't Muro-chin but his Mido-chin, supporting a death glare that Murasakibara had never seen it to be directed at him.
"Mido-chin… Why are you-"
"Where in the seven hells is your phone?"
"…I just found it."
"So you saw my text, correct?"
"Yeah."
"So you saw my text and didn't CALL?!" Midorima took in a deep breath, immediately calming himself on the surface. Murasakibara concluded then that he preferred Mido-chin to yell his frustration instead of talking to him in an ice cold tone.
"Why didn't you call, Murasakibara?"
"…"
"Fine, suit yourself."
The greenette spun around and started to speed walk his way back. Murasakibara was surprised as he didn't understand why Midorima was leaving as abruptly as he'd come.
"Mido-chin, where are you going~?"
The greenette spoke without stopping or even giving him a glance. "Back to Tokyo. You don't have to call or send messages to me anymore. I wish you a happy life with Himuro. Goodb-"
"Wait, no~," The purplette caught his boyfriend's arm. "I still wanna text and hear your voice." Had Mido-chin found out about the bracelet? If so, he was more furious than Murasakibara had anticipated and it was agitating.
Midorima finally looked at the purplette as he chortled, humorless. "Please, spare me the trouble. They are a hindrance for me to respond."
"…Am I a hindrance?"
Midorima's brain was telling him to say yes but his heart was refusing. In the midst of the warzone of his heart and mind, Midorima didn't say anything, only averted his glare.
"Mido-"
"Atsushi, what's going on?"
Murasakibara spotted his teammates approaching them with similar concerned expressions. With the sight of Himuro and others, Midorima heaved a sigh as the last thing he wanted was making a scene when he got dumped. He freed his arm from the clutch of the violet miracle and fixated his gaze solely on Murasakibara.
"Look, Murasakibara, you don't need to give me the speech. I understand, okay? Now, let's say our farewe-"
"Speech~? What speech? I don't have any speech."
The greenette snorted. "Figures."
Seeing his teammate's flummoxed, panicking hooded eyes, Himuro couldn't help but step in.
"Midorima-kun, I get that you are upset at Atsushi for rupturing the bracelet but it's no reason to be so harsh."
It was Midorima's return to be confused, "Bracelet? What bracelet?" He turned to Murasakibara, seeking an explanation.
"The one you gave me. You know I broke~ it. Isn't that why you're breaking up with me?" Murasakibara was sure that his heart looked exactly like those fractured carrots inside of him with the words he uttered.
"Breaking up with you? I'm not breaking up with you. You are."
"Me~? Why would I do that, Mido-chin?"
"It's because you… didn't…" Midorima was at a loss for words. The dorm-residents coming out of their room to see what was happening didn't help much, either.
"It seems there is a misunderstanding. Why don't you two go back to Atsushi's room and talk it over?" Agreeing with the returnee, Yosen players pushed the couple back until the pair was alone behind the safely closed door.
