This was prompted by the guest 'Grace-x'! This isn't exactly what you asked for, but I hope you like it!
Enjoy!
Mara hated to think it. She hated that her brain had immediately switched into jealousy mode. When she got jealous, she never analyzed the facts, she just suspected anything. And this time, she suspected that he was cheating on her. She didn't want to believe it—it broke her heart at the thought alone.
But where was he? He had gotten off work at the studio over an hour ago and he still wasn't back. She had texted him, wondering if he could pick up dinner, but he didn't reply. He always replied almost immediately. This had been going on for the last few days. He used to get off work at 4 o'clock every evening and be home by 4:30.
It was 5:45 as Mara warmed some chicken from the night before. She sat at the kitchen table and sighed, resting her chin on the palm of her hand.
"Honey, I'm home!" she heard her boyfriend call out jokingly as he entered the house. He walked into the kitchen and held up a plastic bag containing Chinese food. His smile dropped when he saw that she was already eating.
"I waited an hour; I got hungry." She said, getting up and setting the plate in the sink.
"Sorry, the place was packed so I went downtown." He mumbled, setting the bag on the counter and pulling the containers out.
And then it hit her. She realized who he had been seeing. Only one person lived downtown. Joy Mercer. He was cheating on her with her best friend. How could they?
She turned around and found herself trapped against the counter, Jerome's arms boxing her in as he leaned against the marble behind her. He leaned down for a kiss but she turned her head and ducked under his arm, twisting around him.
He stood still for a moment, trying to figure out what just happened, but he turned with a smirk playing on his lips. "So you wanna play a game, do you?"
"No, I don't." she said firmly, holding out a hand as he stepped toward her.
His eyebrows furrowed. "Are you really that upset about the food?"
"No, it is not the food!" she exclaimed, running a hand through her black hair.
Jerome's head flew back in surprise at her outburst. "Mara, it was a joke."
"Well, I'm not in a joking mood."
His blue eyes flitted around the room quickly before looking back at her. "Did I do something wrong? Did I forget your birthday? No, your birthday's in April. Is it some kind of anniversary?"
"Why did you have to go all the way downtown for Chinese food when there's a Chinese place right down the street from here?" Mara demanded.
"So it is the food." Jerome muttered before replying, "I don't like that place."
"Well, I don't like that one!"
"What are you talking about? You told me how great it was! You and Joy go down there all the time." He shrugged, stuffing his hands into his front pockets.
"Do you and Joy go down there all the time, too?" she questioned.
"Wha—me and Joy? Why would Joy and I be going to a Chinese restaurant?" he asked in confusion.
"I don't know, you tell me. You're the one cheating." She snapped.
Jerome's eyes grew wide. His mouth opened and closed again, searching for something to say but he settled for gasping out, "Cheating?"
Mara let out a long sigh. "Go pack and get out of my apartment. I don't want a cheater living with me."
Jerome winced at her tone. "But, I'm not cheating—"
"Stop it, Jerome." she spat, tears gathering in her brown eyes and she pushed past him, entering the bathroom and slamming the door shut behind her.
Jerome raced to the door and knocked quickly, rapping his knuckles against the wood. When there wasn't an answer, he sighed, leaning his forearm against the door. "Mara, you don't understand."
Silence.
"Yes, I have been seeing Joy." He admitted and a sob sounded from the other side of the door. Jerome felt his heartbreak, knowing that he had hurt her, even if it was unintentional.
"But I'm not cheating on you. Joy just knows you really well. She's your best friend and she probably knows you better than I do. And I hate that. I want to be your best friend. Forever. I was just meeting her so she could help me pick out a ring for you. Mara, my love, please, believe me. My Beansybop, I love you. Please."
He heard the click of the lock opening. He pushed off the door as it opened and she looked up at him with red, puffy eyes.
"Ring?" she whispered.
He smiled in slight embarrassment. "Well, this isn't exactly how I wanted this to happen, but…" he drifted off as he took a crimson colored, velvet ring box out of the pocket of his gray blazer. He opened it as he sank to one knee and Mara let out a joyful laugh. "I love you, Jaffray; would you do me the indescribable honor of becoming a Clarke?"
Mara took his face in her hands and pressed her lips to his. His arms wound around her waist as her lips moved over his in a short and sweet but underlying passionate kiss. "I love you." She whispered, running her fingers through his blonde hair and his eyes began to flutter close, but he remembered; she didn't give him an answer. He held up the ring box and gazed down at the beautiful piece of jewelry before closing the box. His expression fell and she rubbed his shoulders comfortingly.
"If this isn't how you wanted to ask me, then why don't you do it again later?" she suggested, bending down and kissing his neck.
"When?" he murmured as he tilted his head to give her better access.
"Surprise me."
