Alright! This was prompted by TooBusyBeingAnAwkoTaco! Hope you like it! It's not exactly what you prompted, but it's pretty close and I like it.

Enjoy!

Mara awoke one morning at three o'clock exactly, to a loud clap of thunder. Then she opened her eyes, it took a moment for her brain to process what the sound had been. When her brown eyes flashed to check on Patricia and Joy, she found them sound asleep, while she was the lightest sleeper in the house. She sighed, looking at her clock and then her sigh turned into a huff of annoyance. England and its random storms…

She sat up and shivered as her bare feet touched the hardwood floorboards under her bed. She pulled on her yellow duck slippers and shrugged into her boyfriend's red jumper. She immediately felt warmer. She quietly padded to the door and peeked out of the room into the dark hallway. She slid past the door and out of the girls' hallway, past a snoring Victor and down the stairs to the foyer. She nearly jumped three feet in the air when she saw a shadow standing in the boys' hallway.

"Mara Jaffray, it's after lights out and you're sneaking around? That's against the rules." Jerome tutted, shaking his head, and walked up to her, relishing in the warmth she brought. A flash a lightning lit the room for a split second and Mara caught a glimpse of his blonde hair, shaggy and hanging over his forehead after hours of sleep.

"I'm the lightest sleeper in the house," she pouted, "And once I wake up, I can't get back to sleep."

Jerome nodded in understanding. "How about we have a midnight snack? Something warm, maybe?"

Mara smiled, leaning into his side as he wrapped an arm around her and led her through the dark into the kitchen. He raised the light switch only a hair, dimly lighting the room so they could see but wouldn't draw any attention to them if someone was to wake up. Thunder rumbled and the lamp above the counter shook slightly. Jerome shrugged it off without a second thought.

Mara lifted herself onto the counter and watched as her boyfriend searched the cabinets and refrigerator for something to eat.

"Brownie in a mug," Jerome suggested, turning to her slowly. He arched an eyebrow and she pressed her lips together thoughtfully.

"Sounds perfect for tonight," she smiled.

As he laid the ingredients out on the counter beside her, she waited patiently. Before she could hop off and help, he planted his hands on either side of her hips, his face hovering over hers.

"Kiss the cook." He grinned and she shook her head in amusement, but leaned up and pecked his lips quickly.

As they assembled their brownies, the storm grew steadily louder, with lightning that streaked across the sky and thunder shaking the ground. They popped the mugs into the microwave, waiting silently.

"Storms are so beautiful," Mara sighed, staring out the window at the falling rain and lightning sparked in the sky, appearing to barely graze the tips of the trees in the distance.

"Until it stops raining for an hour and the ground is soggy and muddy." Jerome scrunched his nose in disgust.

"But then everything's so green!" she reminded, skipping up to him. "Over the winter, everything becomes brown, and in April, the rain makes everything green again."

"April's the rainy month alright," Jerome nodded. "It hasn't stopped raining in four days."

He pulled the mugs out of the microwave cautiously and then set them on the counter. They let them cool and then picked them up. When their spoons dug into the top of the chocolate heaven, one of the top steps on the staircase creaked.

Mara jumped and covered her mouth to silence a gasp. She was frozen where she stood and Jerome grabbed her arm, comfortingly. He listened. The steps were heavy and the tap of the souls of shoes could be heard before each step. Jerome's fingers slid down Mara's arm and to her hand, entwining their fingers as he pulled her toward the laundry room. He shut the door behind them and Mara backed into the wall beside the door, holding her breath as they heard Victor walk into the kitchen. They heard him grunt in what sounded to be annoyance and then his footsteps faded out of the room and back up the stairs to his office.

Mara let out her breath, staring wide-eyed at the closed door. Jerome turned to her and grinned, leaning forward so he could see her face better in the dark. He held her chin on his forefinger and chuckled, pressing a lingering kiss to her cheek.

He jerked his head toward the door and opened it, peeking into the room and then shuffling into the dining room. They sat down at the table and dug into their snack, jumping into a soft conversation.
