A loud, hollow boom came from the door. Carol jumped. Something massive had hit the door from the outside, denting the steel. Could it be Khan? Or worse, Admiral Marcus. She thumbed her communicator. "Khan, is that you?"
"Carol? You inside?"
"Yes, wait a second and I'll let you in."
"Hurry, Admiral Marcus not far behind."
Carol looked down at the doctor. Could she lift him and get his eye open to do the retinal scan? Making a face, Carol knelt down and poked him. He moaned and moved a little, so he wasn't completely unconscious. She tried lifting, using the wall to support part of his weight. After about thirty seconds she stopped and he slithered back. He was a lot heavier than he looked and this just wasn't working.
"Carol, open door!"
"I can't!"
"Then get out way now!"
Carol moved aside, wondering just how Khan planned to get through a solid steel door.
She heard a couple of phaser blasts, and the door controls went dark. After a few seconds of tense waiting, Carol turned back to the Augment she'd begun waking. She scanned the little monitoring lights. As far as she could tell, all was well. She moved on to the next, a man with blond hair.
The door behind her squealed and she turned to look. Khan hauled it open somewhat further and slipped inside.
"Who have started?" he asked.
Carol blinked. "These two," she said, pointing them out.
"Good," said Khan.
Carol started in on the next while Khan checked the first two to make sure everything was going according to plan. But instead of starting the waking process on anyone else, he turned back to the door and tried to get it closed. It was a bit bent and stuck rather thoroughly. Even Khan couldn't unjam it, merely bend it worse.
"Need barricade," said Khan, looking around. Carol did likewise. Trouble was, there wasn't anything to barricade the door with except the cryotubes themselves and one temporarily stunned medic.
Khan began hauling one of the cryotubes towards the door. Was Khan so cold-blooded as to use his own people to block the door!? Then she realized that the power light was off. Khan wasn't using a live person to block the door... ew.
"Move," said Khan, frowning at her. Carol nodded and returned to starting revival sequences.
"The door's jammed," someone said from just outside the door.
Carol froze. Was Admiral Marcus here already? Oh great. Where was Pike? He'd better get here soon.
Meanwhile, on board the Enterprise:
Admiral Pike put as much intimidation as possible into his expression as he glared at the lieutenant on the screen. "I am inspecting Jupiter Station under protocol 101D, effective immediately."
"Section 31 doesn't fall under Starfleet's authority," said the lieutenant.
"I have evidence of illegal activities that threaten the security of the Federation, so I'm willing to take that risk."
"Admiral Marcus will hear of this."
"Yes, he will," said Admiral Pike. "I am going to inspect this station. The sooner you find Admiral Marcus and inform him of my arrival, the happier we will both be. Meanwhile, lower your shields and prepare to receive an inspection party in your main transporter room."
"No," said the lieutenant. "I have my orders and I cannot allow you to do this."
"You will lower your shields or be fired upon," said Admiral Pike.
The lieutenant hesitated. "You wouldn't fire on Federation citizens. We're your own people!"
"I would fire on an illegal organization that is reviving genocidal maniacs whose existence threatens everything the Federation stands for!"
"What evidence do have of this? Your actions are a power grab!"
"I've seen the monster with my own eyes," blurted Kirk from behind Pike.
"I will give you the data, and believe me we have plenty or I would hardly be here doing this. Alex Marcus was my friend!" Pike tapped a couple of keys, sending a large pack of data that he had so painstakingly gathered over the past few months, the same data that he had dumped on Admiral Barnett's desk. "I take full responsibility for my actions. Now drop your shields or I will open fire."
The officer dropped his eyes. "You may send a small group to Transporter Room A. No more than five people."
"Good," said Pike. "Kirk, Spock, you have your orders." Pike would have preferred to lead the expedition himself to reduce the likelihood of the situation escalating, but he knew he would be a liability if violence did break out. Blasted Narada!
Kirk nodded tensely. Within two minutes he, Spock and three red shirts materialized in Transporter Room A of Jupiter Station.
A/N: Thank you Barker2000 for reminding me that people are waiting for me to finish writing this so they can read it. I am currently in the later stages of preparing an ebook short collection of fantasy stories to publish on Amazon Kindle. That's why I haven't been posting much lately. The ebook is called Flights of Fantasy and should be out some time in April. I will give links once it is published, and hopefully some of you who like fantasy will go investigate it.
