Next Day
I wake up and take a look at the clock, which is right above Riley's bed. It reads 6:07, I actually slept in about an hour and a half. I look at Riley and see the tube down his throat and the IV In his hand, I kiss his cheek and hand.
"So Riley, I know you did talked to me when I was in here... Everyone thought I was asleep, but I wasn't. Maybe your awake, in a weird state you know? Like you can hear or see me, but can't talk or do anything. Well I haven't really talked to anyone except Melissa and some nurses, they say your getting better. Your heart beat has gotten better, but yet your still in a coma" I start to cry lightly, but not very loudly. "So... In other news we have a lot of stuff to talk about okay? That means you need to wake up soon, so that we'll be able to talk about those things" I kiss his hand. "Riley I miss you, your family misses you, everyone does. Who can't right? Your lovable, I love you so much. Okay... So guess what? We're gonna have a baby. What do you think about that? I'm sorry if you don't want it, I know we are really young. I hope it's a boy, even though I've always wanted a girl... I want him to look just like you, but I know that if we had a daughter she would be beautiful" I run my hair through his brown thick hair. He still needs it cut, but I'm not going to have it done unless it gets to be to his ears. "She would have your beautiful bright blue eyes, maybe my blonde hair. She would have your lanky, but muscular body" From there I start balling I put my head in my hands and pull my knees up on the chair. I feel someone lift me up and then be placed in a lap. I can tell by the body frame and the smell that it's Jace.
"Jace, this is so hard" I sob into his shoulder. He runs his hand over my hair, like so many people have done.
"I know. Shh shh" He rocks me back and fourth.
After about 30 minutes of Jace whispering soothing things into my ear I get the sudden urge to throw up. I pounce off of Jace's lap and run to the bathroom. I quickly puke and walk back into the room. Jace stares at me.
"Talia, please don't tell me that your..." He doesn't finish, but I know what he means.
"Jace, you can't get mad at Riley or I okay?" He flinches and stands up.
"Wow, wasn't expecting that... I'm okay with it, even though your extremely young. Dad though, he might brake a few items" He says
"You can't tell him, it has to be me" He nods knowingly and sits back down.
Later That Night
At about 9:00 is when everything good came crashing down. Riley was actually getting better within the the last about 12 hours or so. His heart ratewas almost perfect, until is worked itself to hard.
I was laying in bed with him, like I always do because there is enough room and I feel like one morning I might wake up with his arms around me. All of a sudden the heart monitor started beeping really fast, his body started seizing and I freaked out.
"Riley!" I shout, nurses start running in and trying to help him. They rip his shirt off and start feeling around and trying to get a pulse. All of this was in front of me they were yelling at each other what was happening.
"He's convulsing!" One yelled
"Heart rate dropping, we need to get charged" Another. Everyone backed away except for two people, one who placed two pads on different places over his chest, and the other holding the chargers. Once the pads were there she shouted.
"Clear" Then she shocked him, his body stopped seizing, but his heart rate still moved fast. I started to feel light headed and began to sit down, but before I did I fell. Hitting my head on the floor.
I wake to people talking around me, I open my eyes and see Melissa and my mom. I groan realizing how dry my throat is, Melissa hears me and gets me some water.
"Thank you" I state once I've slugged the whole thing down. She nods and smiles
"What happened?" I ask.
"Riley had a seizure and his heart rate dropped, he had emergency surgery. But stupid nurses did even see you while they were working on him, out of probably scaredness you fainted and hit your head kinda hard on the floor" Mom snorted. I begin to remember that, then I remember me falling. I put my hands on my stomach and look up. Mom runs her fingers through my hair, getting it out of my face.
"Honey, your baby is fine" I was speechless. Melissa most have told her.
"Tal, I had to tell her, what if something happened to him or her?" I nodded understanding why she did what she did. " And Riley?" I ask, hoping for my voice not to crack.
"He's good. Still in a coma, but the doctors are hopeful, they say he should wake up within the next couple weeks" I quickly nod my head and smile.
"I hope so, I want to tell him about his child" I say.
Days quickly turned into weeks and weeks quickly turned into months. By the time Riley had been in a coma for 2 months was the first time we made some progress.
I was half asleep, but I swear more than anything that I felt his hand squeeze mine.
"Come on baby, come back to me please" I whisper putting my head on his chest. I was now about 1 month and 2 weeks pregnant, I wasn't showing yet. I had gotten in ultrasound one day when Melissa had come and told me that if I didn't I might lose him or her, so I went immediately. I even got a picture of it, I still am hoping that's it's going to be a boy. I told my dad that I was pregnant just a few days before... He was really mad at first and like Jace said he broke a vase, a cup and almost broke Jace's arm when trying to hold him back. After a few hours he became normal again again though, he stayed with me that night and we talked about what me and Jace were like when we were babies and toddlers. I heard a little murmur coming from Riley and I pressed the nurse button. One quickly came in.
"He squeezed my hand! I think he's waking up" She nods and his charts.
"Mr. Pedrad, if you can hear me please move your feet, or squeeze her hand" I felt I little squeeze, if I wasn't paying attention I wouldn't have noticed. I look up at the nurse and she smiles.
"It seems as though he is waking up, I'll bring in some other nurses to take out his breathing tube" I nod and look back at Riley.
"Come on Ri" I say. Soon about 3 nurses come in and make me move to the back of the room. I see them place a rag under his chin and prepare some other stuff I have no idea what they do, or what they're called. Quickly they try to pull out the tube, while you can hear Riley gagging and coughing. Saliva falls out of his mouth, down his chin and onto the towel, I know see what that is for. When the tube is fully out they put some nubs in his nose to help him breath, I guess. I see Riley squeeze his eyes tightly, like he is in pain, the nurses leave saying that he should be up soon. I walk over to him and kiss his head and grab his hand again.
"Get it all out Riley, I know it hurts" Suddenly there is a huge cough that sounds like the person should be dying. I get a cup of water and put it to his lips and tilt it over, he drinks it and does a gulp, then sighs. I run my hand through his hair.
"Talia" His voice is really raspy.
"Right here sweetheart" I say. For the first time in about 2 months I saw Rileys' beautiful bright blue eyes open. I smile so wide.
"What happened" He doesn't state it as a question.
"I don't know... When I was at breakfast I was beginning to worry because you hadn't come. I went home and you were on the floor, you got shot... I don't know who did it" I say. He looks up at me.
"I kind of remember... I came out of the shower and someone knocked on the door, I figured it was you, forgetting your key or something. I opened it and saw that it was someone in Amity clothing, but wasn't from Amity, he was too rough." I just nod and smile up at him, happy that he's alive and awake. Tears leave my eyes and I lay my head down on his chest.
"How long was I out for?" He asks.
"About 2 months and like 3 days" I state. His eyes widen as he realizes that he was gone for 2 months. I honestly thought that he wouldn't wake up, I was losing hope. I talked to our baby every once in a while, but it reminded me of Riley, so I did do it very often. I need to wait to tell him, he can't wake up after 2 months, then suddenly find out that his girlfriend is pregnant. What if he doesn't want the baby? He might not love me anymore, just wanted me for sex.
"Talia... Has anything happened? You seem very distracted. Is there something to tell me?" I shake my head no, but I'm about to respond when all of his family rushes into the room and yells horray's and everything. I go to the back of the room and slip out, I need to get away for a few hours, all I've been doing is sitting in that damn room. I walk down some hallways, then into the place where this all started. The net. My mom always told me the story of how her and dad met. If it wasn't for her going to Dauntless, all of this would've never existed. I climb on top of the net and lay down, then I recall the story again.
Mom had gotten off the train along with Aunt Christina and Uncle Will, mom was the first jumper, and dad was the person to pull her out. "As soon as I saw those grey-blue eyes I knew that I loved her" Dad would tell me and Jace while we started wildly at him, in our pajamas. About half way through initiation they had become a couple, hiding it from everyone else until the end. They made though. I hear a light shuffling which brings me out of my trance, I get off the net and make my way to the new apartment, at which I haven't been to since the accident. I open the door and see that everything is cleaned up, it looks the same though, all the furniture. I strip away the sweaty clothes from my body and take a cold shower.
Once I get out I put on one of Rileys' shirts and get into the bed, without the love of my lifes arms around me.
