Chapter Six

The voice of Alex calling her name brought Amanda back from her daydream. She looked around, the uncomfortable feeling of suspicion gnawing at her gut. She unconsciously tapped the pen that was caught between her fingers on top of the wooden desk.

"Amanda, are you okay?" Alex repeated, her voice now clearer in Amanda's head. Her eyes still roamed around the room regardless. Everything was as it was supposed to be. Her office was tidy as usual, everything in her own image. But that strange feeling endured. It felt as if she was feeling an emotion that belonged to her past. Maybe in relation to something that wasn't real, at least not anymore.

She cleared her throat. "I'm sorry, you were saying?" she asked, as she tried to pay less attention to the weird feeling that ran through her head.

"I was just saying that I'm back. You know, from my mission in Russia," Alex stated. The tone in her voice showed great irritation, making Amanda snap out of her semi-trance.

"Hmm, yes - your little rogue mission against Semak. What's his status?"

"He's still alive. For now." Alex paused for a moment, before she leaned forward and spoke in a whisper. "Semak as my mother, Katya, and she's not exactly being forced to stay."

"Oh. I see." She felt sorry for her. She came back with a brand new scar etched into an already far too wounded heart.

"I want to make Semak pay for everything he's done," Alex declared, obviously not happy with the outcome of her mission, a fact that Amanda wanted to use to her own advantage.

"I'll help you. But I need you to promise me one thing."

"What's that?"

"There will be no more of you gallivanting on solo missions. No running off all by yourself. We're working together."

Alex felt her insides turn and twist as she woke up from the first layer of the dream. She had told Cobb before they'd got under that the dream should be centered on when she got back from her mission in Russia, when Percy was locked up, when Amanda was still in control of Division and when she was helping her assume her rightful place as a Udinov.

A small grin displayed itself on Amanda's lips as she spoke. "You will reappear as Alexandra Udinov, the long-lost daughter of the late Nikolai Udinov, the sole heir to a billion-dollar empite.

"How's that gonna bring down Semak?"

"It will paralyze him. Your very existence puts Semak in a precarious position. The only reason he has control over Zetrov is because the world thinks all Udinovs are dead. Everything he has is rightfully yours.

Alex gulped, and a storm of old memories rushed back, the feelings that often plagued her returning. "All I want is my mother away from him, I don't want the company."

"We know that. Semak doesn't. That's your power."

The building shook, interrupting their conversation. An explosion went off, the loud noise filling the room. It briefly subsided, both women managing to stay seated until the sound of gunshots were heard. Alex jumped off her chair and dragged Amanda to the floor and underneath the large, wooden table, while outside the sound of gunfire remained strong and steady.

"I need a weapon!" Alex looked around, her breath irregular as the adrenaline kicked in.

"I have one in the desk, top drawer," Amanda replied slowly.

As quickly as it came the sound of gunfire ceased. Alex jumped from the coverage of the table and made a run towards the desk stationed near the door. Just as she reached it the door flew open.

Two masked men burst through, one of them immediately shoving Alex's weapon away and immobilized her with minimal effort, while the other walked towards Amanda.

He grabbed her arm, and although she tried to fight him off, he held her in a tight grip and stuck a needle into her, releasing a powerful sedative that made her collapse into his arms in a matter of seconds. As soon as Amanda was unconscious, Alex shook off the hands that were still holding her upper body.

She looked around and stared at Dom, now with his mask off, as he laid down the numb body of Amanda on the floor. Her eyes flickered towards the door, where Arthur entered and fired one last shot out before closing the door behind him.

"Those people out there are just projections, darling, none of them are real," Eames spoke lowly from behind her while he removed his mask, as if he could read her mind.

Alex had been someone who Eames needed to understand properly in order to work with. He had wanted to figure out the depths of her being, all of the lights and darkness of her personality. It had surprised her how in just a few days he had decoded so much about her, and how she had allowed him to. When she was with Eames, Alex had learned she could freely speak her mind, and if there was something that she didn't want to talk about, he never pushed her. But the best part of their connection was that she could easily relax around him and enjoy the moment. She would smile and laugh and talk about silly things, or hell, not even talk at all. He could make her smile by just being near, and he would smile in return.

As Arthur set up the PASIV, Alex watched Eames as he carefully held her forearm and pierced her skin with the needle. She flinched, not from the pain, but from the contact of the cold object on her warm skin. She noticed a smile playing on Eames' mouth momentarily before the corners of her lips turned slightly upward.

"An idea can transform the world and rewrite all the rules. We will make Amanda believe her secrets, her only valued possessions, are in danger," Cobb's earlier words ran through her head, before she felt the darkness take over once more.

A.N.\ I know it took me what it seamed like an eternity to update TaLoF, and worst, it is such a small chapter, but to the completely honest with whoever is reading and/or following this fiction, I'm having health issues, and it has become hard just to get through the day, and although writing is a passion, right now it is not a priority. But I'll try to update TaLoF and Call of the Rebel as soon as I can, I promise! Oh, and btw, any kind of feedback it's still very much appreciated! ;-)
