For the first hour or two in the air they kept to them selves, both thinking about what they were about to get into. Kagome knew they had to be ready for anything because even though she could think like her father she knew he always had a back plan for his back up plan. She also knew that most of his plans took time, but if she was right then this plan was years in the making. She was always told growing up that she was next in line, that it was her duty to know the ins and outs of the business. Part of her believed that until now, if Kagewaki was really her brother then he should be the one to take over, so then why is he after her? She should be disposable.
"Kagome?" Sesshomaru called her to the outside world. "Are you better?"
She smiled and shook her head. "Sorry, I didn't mean to worry you."
He pulled her to the couch on the other side of the jet and sat her on his lap. "It's alright." There was a moment of silence between the two. He began playing with the pendent around her neck. "You've never taken this off?" She shook her head.
"I promised you I wouldn't."
"And I'm glad you haven't, but I wish you didn't have it."
"Why? It saved me you know. When I was taken by Bankotsu, he saw the pendent and it was proof enough for the others not to kill me." She turned to him.
"I love that it saved you, but it's what it stands for that I don't like- hate to be more exact."
"Why would you hate it? You're the one that made me promise to never take it off, it seemed important to you at the time." He was silent for a moment. "What does it stand for?" Kagome never gave it much thought as to what it stood for.
"You belong to Inuyasha." She knew there had to be more to it then her just being Inuyasha's girlfriend, she had already made her choice. Though she still had to officially break up with Inuyasha, but how or when she was going to do that she don't know. She couldn't figure out what he meant and looked to him for the answer. "The moment I put that necklace around your neck," He was so hesitant he couldn't even look at her. "the deal was complete."
"Deal?" She took a moment and let that word settle in around her. "Deal?" She repeated to herself. "What deal?" She looked at him.
"Kagome-"
"What deal Sesshomaru?" She stood up and backed away from him.
"You're safety was my only concern when we agreed to give it to you that night." He reached out to her but she slapped his hand away. He had never seen anger on her face like this before. Maybe because it wasn't just anger, it was hurt and betrayal. "When I was young our father's entered into a business agreement and for a few years everything was fine. The contract they had seemed to work for them, they divided the city and together became powerhouses." He sat down looking her in the eye. "But before they went into this contract both had to bring something to the table to prove their loyalty, and what better way than to offer ones own family?" He let the wheels turn over that last comment.
"Me and Inuyasha?"
"No. You and I, but your father was very adamant that it be Inuyasha and for the interest of business my father accepted." He stood up and faced her, he hadn't even told her his biggest secret. "For some years everything was good, until my mother died and your father disappeared."
"What?" Kagome felt like she had been hit by a train. Some where inside she felt she always knew, but being confronted with it was more than she thought it would be. "Your mother...my fa-" She couldn't seem to get it out.
"You're father killed my mother, and then just disappeared."
Kagome had to sit. For some reason she felt guilty, as if it was her that did it. "Sesshomaru.." She chocked on the lump in her throat. "I'm sorry, I didn't know."
"I know you didn't." He knelt in front of her. "I didn't want you to ever know." He could say it was okay all he wanted, but she knew it wasn't. He was still hurt and angry or he would not be looking for her father, but something wasn't adding up again. Like why did it have to be Inuyasha? Why not kill his mother just like he did Sesshomaru's? Why tell her that she was going to be in charge and put her through all those years of training? Why try so hard to get her back now? Unless the contract was still in place.
"Sesshomaru, you were what five when this deal was struck? And then fifteen, sixteen when your mother was killed?" He nodded his head and watched the wheels turn in her head. It was all coming together. "No.." She stood up and began pacing the plan back and fourth, she didn't want to believe the conclusion she was coming to.
"What is it?"
"All my life I was trained to have the skills of a mafia leader, not to take over my family but to take over yours." He looked at her in disbelief. "Think about it," She began to piece it together for him. "You were already familiar with the bad blood between the two families so even if you and I were to be offered up you would never trust me, Inuysha on the other hand could be molded." The looks on her face changed from confusion, realization and anger all in one minute. "It makes perfect sense." She stopped pacing and faced him. "While Kagewaki was trained to take my fathers spot I was always trained to kill you all. And your mother was just the domino that was supposed to start the rest."
Sesshomaru thought about it or a moment. "It almost makes sense, he takes out my mother causing my father to go after him and then he would kill my father. Then you would kill me and my brother."
"Right, except your father was too smart for that. You on the other hand..." She eyed him.
He ignored her and moved on, "That would imply that the contract is still being kept." he eyed her.
"Right, but not between our fathers." Kagome stopped, not really sure how to say what was next. "Sesshomaru, where was Inuyasha that day at the wear house?" He fell silent. Though he had asked him, he was never given an answer. What ever their differences were, he still did not want to believe that Inuyasha would betray they family. "I may have been wrong that day about my father not being there. When did Inuyasha figure out he was in California?"
"A short time before..." He trailed off, "you were kidnapped." she was right.
"I think he was at the wear house that day and while we were distracted, they made some sort of deal."
It was his turn to take a seat. "A deal for what though?" She sat next time him grabbing his hand. He knew she didn't have the answer to that, but part of him was still in denial that Inuyasha would do such a thing.
"I hope I'm wrong."
"If you are then that would mean either you or my father is in on it." Despite that those were the only other two options every part of him knew with out a doubt that he could trust her. The rest of the flight they sat entwined with each other figuring out how they would get Inuyasha back and how they would tell him about them. Kagome offered up waiting till her father was taken care of and they were all safe and back in New York.
Once they landed Sesshomaru called Inuyasha, "Where are you?"
"Well hello to you too." Inuyasha barked. "Why do you want to know any way?"
"Well, I'm in California." He decided to leave out Kagome's presences and from the silences on the other end, he made the right choice.
"For?" Inuyasha snapped after a moment.
"I can't leave my little brother to do my dirty work." He told Inuyasha what hotel they would be in and he expected to be having dinner with his younger brother with an update.
