"As you all know," the teacher drawled, "the year is coming to a close."
A soft "woot" could be heard from the back of the room.
Sighing he continued, "Thus it's time for your final projects." The words fell slowly off his lips, and he seemed to be savoring every bit of misery that they brought to the class, "I, of course, will choose your partners. But first let me explain the criteria…" He continued to take us through a list of complicated tasks and assigning point values to each one. Kaito met my eyes and shot me a fatigued look, and I mouthed "I know right" back.
"Now for the pairings." This is what everybody was waiting for, "Gumi and Rin," they were the only other two girls in my math class "Kiyoteru and Oliver and finally, Teto and Kaito. Everyone good?"
Surprisingly, everyone was.
He clapped his hands together, "Alright! But if I see any of you goofing off points will be deducted." I spotted Gumi and Rin exchange glances, so there was a catch, "The project is due in one week. That should be plenty of time, in fact, I'll give you class time right now. Get to work."
Kaito smiled and pulled his chair closer to mine, "Hey…partner."
"Why hello there...partner." I giggled.
"So what should we do our project about?" he cracked his knuckles, "I wanna finish it as fast as I can so I can use the class-time to goof off and play videogames."
"My thoughts exactly." I drummed my fingers on my desk, "What combines Humanities and Math and has a hint of, I dunno, awesome-sauce-ness as well?"
Now it was his turn to laugh, "Awesome-sauce-ness?"
"Yeah, it's a word. A hybrid, but still a word."
"Sweet. I like it. We should do it on the evolution of slang and the times at hand. Like did you know that the word 'Selfie' is in the dictionary?" He adjusted his glasses.
"Yeah." I raised my hand to do the same but realized I was wearing contacts.
"Well, it's happened a lot, and the words reflect what pop-culture was like during the time period."
"And for the math, we could do the statistics of how many are adopted each decade! Yeah! WOOHOOO!"
Mr. Akita shot us a cold stare.
"Woohoo." I whispered.
"Woohoo." He replied.
Since math was our last period of the day, Yuma was already waiting for me outside the classroom. He had a sort-of gloomy expression on his face, so I punched him in the arm to cheer him up.
"Ow! What was that for, Teto?"
"You looked down." I shrugged.
"So you punched me?"
"Yes." I shrugged, "It seemed like the right thing to do."
"Your logic never fails to amuse me."
"So what is getting you down? Final projects?"
"What took you so long Sherlock?" He snapped, then softened his voice, "I just know I'm going to fail."
"No you're not, Yuma. You're actually one of the smartest people I know. You just don't…know it yet?"
"Why the hell was that a question?!" He bit his lip to keep his eyes from watering, "I'm an idiot, Teto. And everyone seems to know it but you. I can't believe anything else."
"Yuma, we're going to be late for our study…" I grabbed his forearm, but he gently brushed my hand off.
"I don't think I want to study today. Let's go straight to work. I'll wait for you in the truck." He slunk away, haphazardly dodging lockers.
And I just watched him. What a good friend am I.
"Teto," I felt a finger softly tap my shoulder.
"Y-yes?" Kaito was swaying awkwardly, "Were you here the whole time!?"
"Would you rather me say the truth or…"
"K-Kaito…I don't know what to do with him!" It was meant to be more of an outburst, but it came out as a squeak. The blue haired boy squeezed my hand reassuringly.
"Teto, just don't remind him about it. Find a way around it." He led my hand in a circle, "Praise him slightly more than often, and help him as much as you can. If he feels unmotivated, insist."
I nodded, my eyes watering uncontrollably, "T-t-Tuesday?"
"Wh-what?"
"The project silly?" I forced my lips up into a weak grin, "The one that's worth like a third of our grade?"
"How could I forget?" He led my hand to my cheek to wipe off an impending tear, "It's gonna be pure awesome-sauce-ness."
I chuckled, and rubbed the rest of the moisture off my face, "Bye…partner."
"See you later, partner. Like in half an hour when my shift starts."
"And…ruined."
