Chapter Five:
HRG HEADQUATERS
Sitting in a conference room, HRG listened to the person on the other end of his phone. He tapped his fingers uneasily against the wooden table in front of him. He frowned and tried to speak but was cut off. He slowly nodded, watching the Haitian stroke Bailey's face as she lied on the floor nearby. "I understand, sir!" He disconnected the call. "Is she awake yet!"
"No."
"Damn it!" HRG remained sitting in the leather chair. "This is a nightmare." He looked at Bailey and then at the Haitian. "How long have you been able to speak?"
"For awhile."
"Awhile? Are you still with me?"
"Yes."
"Are you sure?" The Haitian nodded. "Eden was with me, but then she betrayed me. " The Haitian continued to look at him. "Are you with me!"
"Yes. Yes, I am."
"Prove it." The Haitian looked confused. "Make Bailey forget about Officer Parkman."
"She has not regained consciousness yet…"
"I don't care! Do it! Now!" The Haitian noticed that Bailey had started to wake up. "Now!" The Haitian looked back at HRG.
Leaning over Bailey, the Haitian placed his hand against her head. His eyes met hers. He forced himself to concentrate. His grip tightened around her head.
"Please… No…"
"I am sorry."
Bailey struggled against his grip. She was horrified that her body was paralyzed. She cried, and his heart broke. But then his power seized her mind. She screamed in response.
HOSPITAL
Matt Parkman awoke, finding himself in a chair near Peter Petrelli's bed. Groaning, he rubbed his face. Looking at Peter, he realized that someone else was watching him. It was Nathan, who now approached him.
"You okay?"
"What happened? How long was I out?"
"For awhile. Now, what the hell happened in here!"
"HRG was here."
"Who?"
"The guy with the horn rimmed glasses. Forget it. He brought Bailey here."
"The one that tried to kill me?"
"Yes." Matt watched Nathan approach Peter's bed and touch Peter's hand.
"What did she do to him?"
"I think she made him better."
"I think you're right. He is better. He just hasn't woken up yet."
"Yeah. Well… When he does, let me know." Matt stood up from his seat.
"Where are you going?"
"To find Bailey."
"You think that's a good idea?" Matt looked at Nathan. "Maybe, this HRG is watching over her for a good reason."
"Do you know something that I don't?"
"No. How should I reach you when my brother wakes up?"
"Here's my card." He pulled out a business card from his wallet.
Handing it to Nathan, he watched him take the card. He held onto the card for a moment as he and Nathan studied each other. Letting go of the card, Matt walked away from him and approached the door.
"Be careful." Matt looked at Nathan. "She might have helped my brother, but she is still dangerous."
"No, she's not." He left the room.
CLARE'S HOUSE
Clare looked at a picture of herself and her friend that was killed by Sylar. She started to cry as she held the picture against her chest. Looking up, she saw her father standing in the doorway, watching her. "Hi, daddy."
"Hey, sweetheart." He walked over to her and sat on the bed. "You okay?"
"I can't believe she's gone. I can't believe that she was murdered."
"I know, honey. I know." He put his arm around Clare. "How are you doing? Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. I'm fine." She gave him a big smile. "How are you? How was work?"
"I had a bad day yesterday. There's some things that I have to work out, but I wanted to check in on you first. I wanted to make sure that you were okay."
"Why wouldn't I be okay?" She looked at her father, who returned her gaze. "Am I in trouble?"
"No. No. Not at all." He kissed her on top of her head. "I was just worried about you handling the death of your friend. That's all." He got up from the bed. "If you need me, call me."
"I will." Clare continued to hold the picture of her and her friend. "I'll be okay, dad."
"I know you will be, Clare. I'll talk to you later." HRG walked out of the room.
Looking at the picture, Clare tossed it aside. She waited a moment and then heard the front door close. Looking out the window, she saw her father approach a car parked across the street. She watched him talk to a man behind the steering wheel and point to the house. For a moment, she thought that he saw her, but then he resumed talking to the man. She watched him walk away from the car and toward his own car.
Picking up the phone, Clare dialed a number. She listened as the phone rang. Finally, the Haitian answered. "He just left."
"Did he believe that you forgot?"
"Yes."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"Good. Just remember what we talked about."
"You're not going to hurt him, are you?"
"No. Just be ready for when the time comes." The call ended.
"I'll be ready." Still holding the phone, Clare let out a deep sigh. "I'll be ready."
HOSPITAL
Peter dreamt. He stood in the middle of the city like before, but this time, nobody was around. Then, Sylar appeared. He faced him, and just as Sylar was about to attack, white light struck him.
Turning to his right, Peter saw Bailey attack Sylar with her white light. She smiled at him as Sylar fell to the ground. Her eyes started to glow white. Sylar started to die.
Peter ran toward her, trying to stop her from killing Sylar. As he reached her, she aimed one hand at him, shooting him with her white light. He buckled to his knees. He screamed for her to stop, but his cries fell on deaf ears. She was killing him, and she knew it. And he knew that nobody could stop her not even Sylar.
Peter awoke. He sat up in bed. He was covered in sweat. Pushing strands of hair out of his face, he realized that Nathan was now beside him.
"Peter! I've been so worried!" Nathan embraced him. "What's wrong?"
"Bailey."
"What?"
"We have to stop her, Nathan. We… We have to stop her."
"What did you see, Peter?"
"She killed Sylar, and then she kills me."
"What?"
"We're so worried about Sylar, but she's more stronger than him. She's more dangerous." Peter stared at his brother. "If we don't stop her, nobody will!"
Peter started to unhook himself from the machines around him. He's about to get out of bed when dizziness hit him. Shaking it off, he tried to get out of bed again.
"Peter, you need to rest. You've been through a lot."
"No. No, Nathan. I can't be here. I have to go."
"Go? Go where?"
"I have to find her."
"The cop is already looking for her."
"Cop?" Peter then remembered Parkman had tried to stop Bailey from helping him. "We're going to need his help."
"Peter, this is insane." He tried to keep his brother in bed.
"Nathan." His brother looked at him. "If we don't stop her, she is going to kill and keep killing. Please. Help me. Help me find her."
"And what do we do when we find her?"
"We stop her."
"Okay. Okay. Let me call the cop because we are going to need his help." Nathan started to walk out of the room.
"Nathan?" His brother looked at him. "Thank you."
"Don't thank me, Peter. You have no idea what you put me through or what you will put me through." He stormed out of the room.
