A/N: Just a little drabble I found when I was going through some of my unpublished stuff on Tumblr. Hope you like it!
Also, for those of you who are reading my "triad" of AU stories, I am working on them, I promise! Here's a brief update:
SCOM: Chipping away, bit by bit. My ultimate goal is to actually finish the last few chapters before publishing them, so that people won't have to wait any longer than they already have! I've written about half of the next chapter, as well as a little of the epilogue, because I've always known how it would end and I'm trying to work backwards, in some ways.
AWLT: Published a new chapter right before New Year's, so hopefully you saw that! A new one will be ready soon.
WTNC: Haven't had as much time to sit down and focus on this one as I had hoped. But I'm bursting with ideas, so I will probably be working on it this week and try to get something posted for you ASAP.
I love you all! Thank you so much for your continued support. I want you to know that even if I don't necessarily reply to each individual review, you are the sunshine to my day, the spring in my step. I am humbled and honored by your words, and you will never know the true depths of my appreciation. I hope you all find twenty dollars on the ground today.
KINDRED
Toby Cavanaugh had never given much thought to the way he slept. He had never concerned himself with the size of the bed, the firmness or give of the mattress, or the thread count of his sheets. He had always just climbed under the covers and let nature do the rest.
Until he had slept beside her.
The warmth that radiated from her figure was paralyzing, and sufficed to lull him into an unparalleled sense of exhaustion. The rise and fall of her form as her breathing evened out under the influence of slumber was likened to being rocked gingerly to sleep. Occasionally, when a chill passed through the room, she would nuzzle closer against him, her nose always finding its cradle in the crook of his neck.
Her very presence was a lullaby - a natural sedative. He slept more soundly and woke up feeling more refreshed than he ever had before her, and he knew instinctively that it was because she was as much his safe place to land as he was hers. The arm she draped over his chest acted as a shield, barricading their cocoon from the rest of the world.
When it was just the two of them in his bed, pulled under by the sandman's powerful spell, all hardships and worries were put on hold. They were a different concern for a different day.
And when they awoke, they could tiptoe those precarious precipices as a team: the bottomless caverns created by 'A'. The dark, desolate craters of family discord. Even the jagged terrain of fear for what the future may hold.
With the peace and power they gleaned from one another in the company of the pale moonlight, they could more easily face their demons as one when the sun peeked over the horizon and bade them a tentative welcome. Together, they were equipped to face anything.
