"I think we need a little of order and method here. Dr. Protheroe, what happened when Mrs. Whitlock received the letter?" Edward inquired. He felt there was something more than Alice's selfish intentions of getting Jasper for herself at any cost.

Protheroe answered "She hung herself with one of the sheets from her bed. We never thought she would go so far. The sheets were stitched to the mattress. She took them out with her pinky finger, it was very damaged because of the effort; but Jasper, remember she wasn't your Maria anymore. She was so paranoid that she demanded to boil her own eggs, she only trusted the day nurse that took care of her. And she was regressing to her childhood. She only ate the eggs and water, and that diet was mining her health. She wouldn't have lived too much anyway."

Edward turned to Jasper. "Would you mind if I take a look at the letter?"

"No, of course not."

"Dr. Could you please ask for..."

"I have it here. We have a package with her things, Jasper forgot about it the last time he was here, which was comprehensible." Marcus pulled a key from a drawer on his desk, and opened an armoire. "Here." He took a wooden box and gave it to Edward. He opened i. He found some jewelry, a set of combs and mirror made of ivory, two pictures... One of a woman wearing a hat that was fashionable thirty years ago at least, probably Maria's mother. The other was a couple in their wedding day. A very young Jasper, and a petite beautiful woman. Black hair and very pale skin. This was Maria.

Then there was the letter.

To the girl who this may concern. Dear girl: With deep sorrow I write to give you not so great news... Dr. Jasper Whitlock belongs here, by my side. I know that he may had some history with you but it's now in the past... We've made plans for the future, a future where I'll be Mrs. Jasper Whitlock, the mother of his children. I feel terrible for crushing your dreams but...

Edward didn't need to continue reading this letter. How could Alice be so spiteful to a sick woman? He felt so terrible for Jasper, but there was something weird on the letter.

"Jasper, did Alice know that you were married?"

"Not exactly. I only told her that I was unavailable, but she didn't care."

"The how she knew where to send this package?"

Everybody gasped. Edward was right.

Alec asked then "Dr. Protheroe, do you remember who brought the package?"

"Yes, his appearance was quite unusual. He was very old, and one of his eyes was blinded, but he didn't cover it. Crooked nose, fine clothes though very worn-out."

Emmet huffed. "This looks like Angus, he was Carlisle's messenger for his other business. Now that I remember, he asked one of his employees to investigate Jasper."

The aforementioned jumped and turned to Emmett. "What? Why?"

"At the time, I didn't see anything wrong with it. Alice was infatuated with you, and he had the right to know, you know, as her father."

Edward nodded. "I understand his position, but I don't think he mentioned it to Alice. This letter isn't addressed to Mrs. Whitlock, or to anyone in particular. It could be a fiancé, a girlfriend, an ex-lover... even a woman with a crush. Are you sure this is Alice handwriting? I just know it isn't Carlisle's."

Emmett nodded,at the same time Alec argued. "But Carlisle couldn't possibly be capable of this."

"You don't have an idea of the kind of things we found out he was capable."

"So Carlisle sent someone to bring the letter..."

"We're not sure Edward."

"Jasper when did you break up your relationship with Alice?"

"I didn't have any..." Jasper paused to acknowledge the pointed look he received from everyone in the room. "I told her we have to stop seeing each other before coming here. After I found about this I just can't stand being near her anymore."

"So we know Carlisle was behind all the mess brought by this package, he was determined to end whatever was happening between you and Alice, so somehow he made her write the letter..." Edward was concentrated thinking in something else.

Dr. Protheroe added "I wish i met this Carlisle, he had a twisted mind, worth to be studied."

Jasper looked at his watch. "Gentlemen, I have to go. The lab will give me the results of the analysis from the glasses. If you excuse me."

"Wait, we'll go with you."

Bella brushed her skirt again. She wasn't sure if it was a good idea to be here in the attic of the Cullen's home, well, now it was Esme's home.

Jane was really calmed after she found out Esme was arrested. When Bella told her she would be staying with them, Jane bluntly asked if it was because the police arrested her aunt. To Bella's utter shock, Jane stated that it was logical, but she was sure the police will release her soon when they find the culprit... but maybe to ease her pain, she could take home a couple of kittens of the litter that Gianna's cat recently had. Gianna's acquiesced since the kittens were old enough to leave their mother's side. So here they were, looking for old pillows and rags top make a bed for the cute creatures. Jane was running from side to side, making it obvious how much time she spent in the attic.

"Look Bella. This dress was from Alice's tenth birthday. Isn't it ridiculous?"

The dress was full of bows all frilly and ruffled. She had to admit that it was ugly. Alice liked to garner everybody's attention, no matter what kind of attention it was.

She decided to let Jane do all the mess she wanted, so looked for a place to seat and relax. There was an old chair next to the little window on the left side. She tried to blow the dust from the chair, but amazingly, it wasn't dirty. She seated and looked through the window, which was too clear. She looked to the attic, everywhere there were dust and cobwebs, except in this chair and window. It seems like somebody liked to seat here and watch.

The view from this window shouldn't be so interesting like the other one from the opposite side. That looked to the town. But from this one could only see the road and the lake. Bella set her eyes on the road. A couple of farm hands were walking to their homes... just like that day. You could see if someone went to the lake, but Esme wasn't alone, so whomever was here must had seen Demetri; unless something blocked him. Like that line of trees... Was it possible that somebody watched Esme talking to Carmen, but missed Demetri because the trees blocked him? Who could had it be? She noticed a scratch on the wood from the window... a couple of letters inside a heart. Oh God!

"Jane come here! Quickly!"

"Why?" Jane whined.

"Come, we have to go to the police."

"To visit my aunt?"

"No."

Once she had Jane out of the house, she told her. "I think I know who killed Carmen."

Jasper found it funny how he thought this would be a journey he was meant to do alone. But fate put three men to go with him. First in Saint Andrew's, and now in the lab. The chemist came to deliver the results.

"Here we have three glasses. One has only remains of water. The other two have faint traces of a somniferous, given that you brought us a sample of a cachet, we found it matched the content of the glasses. But the dose if minimum. I'm sure it could only get someone to sleep without endangering their health. Like I told you before, none of the content of these glasses killed your man."

Edward took one of the glasses. It had orange lipstick. Only one woman he knew used it. It was the theme of a recurrent nightmare of him. But then she... it can't be possible! Unless...

"Guys, we have to go back. Quickly. I think I know who killed Carlisle, but then, there's someone else in terrible danger."

Well, we're close to the end. Who do you think killed Carlisle and Carmen?

We'll find out in the next one.
