"It really surprises me that you had such trouble holding your liquor the other night," Elijah told Selina as they lay together in bed before going to sleep. "I thought you had a much higher tolerance."

"I do," Selina replied. "I've been drinking since 1861. However, since I've been with you and have had to put my vices aside, my body must have not been able to deal with the sudden influx of what I was consuming and thus, I got sick."

"Well, whatever the reason, I suppose I owe you a 'thank you'," Elijah told her. "You really did try to get along with Katherine and I appreciate your efforts."

"Thank you," Selina replied. "Cause I really did try, you know. I mean, I get that Katherine is a big part of my life now, and it's something I have to deal with." She then looked at Elijah and put her arms around him. "It makes it easier on me to know that I have you and she doesn't."

"Well, it's not a contest," Elijah replied. "But as I can't say I wouldn't throw our relationship in Damon Salvatore's face if I had the chance, I can't blame you for feeling that way."

"Yeah," Selina nodded and snuggled against him. "Do you think Katherine and I are anything alike? Now, I mean?"

"No," Elijah replied, running his fingers through her hair as she drifted off. "But you used to be…"

"So about these lessons," A blonde-haired Selina eyed Elijah, a cigarette between her teeth, the white part of it stained by her red lipstick. "Do you think they're working?"

"Yes," Elijah replied. "For all the trouble you've had, I think you're doing well. This is 1928. I've been working with you for a year. That's usually too soon to see progress, but I'm impressed."

"Do you do this often?" Selina asked, coming close to him. "Fix damaged tomatoes like me?"

"Not a lot," Elijah replied. "But as you spend a lot of time with my brother, and I feel like you're not living up to your potential, I thought I would give you a hint or two to help you along."

"Well, they've been most informative," Selina replied. "But I think there's one thing more I need to learn."

"And what's that, Sera?" He asked (cause that was her name back then.)

"I wanna learn what it feels like to have sex with someone who loves me," Selina replied, nibbling on his ear. He let out a gasp and was about to put his lips on hers, but stopped himself. "Then go see my brother," he said. "He's the one you're with, not me."

"Oh, you can't fool me like this," Selina replied, slowly letting down her stockings as Elijah watched, and then throwing her arms around his neck and kissing him gently. "I know you think about me. As for your brother, I know he's seeing another girl right now. It's what we do: see other people during the day and each other at night. So give me a little kiss." She winked, her hand slowly going up his inner thigh toward his crotch. "We don't even have to tell Nicky at all."

He gave her a long look, and as her hand reached his crotch, he smiled. "All right," he said. "And you're right. We don't have to tell my brother."

Selina nodded, smiled, and they undressed before hopping into bed with each other. He figured he would do it with her now to get it out of her system, and he could always make her forget after if need be. But sooner than that, something happened that was what he wanted to make her forget more than the sex.

As she ended a kiss, the door opened and her head turned as Katherine said, "Oh, I'm sorry, Elijah. I came for my lesson, but if you're busy, I can come back."

"What the hell are you doing here?" Selina cried. Then she turned to Elijah. "What's she doing here? This is the woman responsible for ruining my life!"

"Well, we're old friends," Elijah replied. "She comes by sometimes for a chat. I completely forgot it was today. I should have told you, Sera."

"Sera?" Katherine chuckled. "Who the hell is Sera?"

"She is," Elijah replied.

"Oh, no she's not," Katherine laughed. "Her name's not Sera at all. It's Selina Warren. She's just a nobody from the Civil War South. You deserve better than that, Elijah. Someone older and more sophisticated."

Selina snorted. "And you think that's you? Well you're clearly delusional."

"Katherine, I think you need to go," Elijah said quickly. "We can talk tomorrow, but Selina and I are working on something very important that can't be interrupted."

"Fine," Katherine replied. "If you want to keep babysitting this delusional child who can't stand the fact that she's so whiny and clingy her fiance dumped her for me, be my guest." She then removed her coat to reveal the lacy lingerie underneath. "But here's what you'll be missing."

Selina's eyes narrowed. "Oh, my god!" She cried. "You are such a whore! And I am not gonna let you ruin things with another man for me!"

"Why not?" Katherine asked. "You've already lost so many that this one should just be no problem for you." Katherine, of course, was speaking about men like Damon and her father, not the hordes of men who had abandoned Selina as Lonely Heart, but the mention of her losing men had made something click in Selina's mind. She picked up Elijah's shirt from the floor, put it on, and tackled Katherine, getting in a couple of good punches before the much older Katherine overpowered her. "Now you just get your clothes and run along," she said. She got off her and then Selina stood up, got dressed, and zipped out of the house.

"Well, now that she's gone, where were we?" Katherine asked.

"I'm sorry," Elijah replied. "I can't do this right now. I have to go after Selina."

"Why?" Katherine huffed. "What the hell does it matter?"

"I have worked with her for a year to improve her mood," Elijah said patiently. "We were at a good place until you showed up without even calling first. And there's no way I'm letting a whole year of work go to waste. When I get back here with her, I want you to be gone, Katerina."

"Fine," Katherine pouted. "I'll go. But I'm coming back eventually."

"We'll see about that," Elijah replied before running off to catch Selina, and locking eyes with her after he sat her down on his bed, said, "All that happened tonight was lessons," he said. "We got interrupted by my neighbor so they ran late. That's why you're going to stay here for the evening."

"I am?" Selina asked brightly. "Wonderful! Should I call Nicky and tell him?"

"No," Elijah shook his head. "I'll do that. I'll call…Nicky. You just…you just stay where you are."

"All right," Selina told him. "I will. Then can we keep on doing what we were doing before we were so rudely interrupted?"

"If it will keep you where I can keep an eye on you, of course," Elijah replied. "Just remember-"

"Don't tell your brother," Selina finished. "Don't worry. I know."

"What are you thinking about?" Selina asked, suddenly breaking into his thoughts.

"Oh, nothing," Elijah replied, snapping back to reality. "Just thinking about the past is all."

"All right," Selina nodded, and then yawned. "I'm tired. I think I'm ready to go to sleep."

"Okay," Elijah replied, waiting for her to settle down before he turned off the light. "Goodnight, my love."

"Good night," Selina whispered back.

Since Selina seemed to have recovered from whatever had troubled her at Katherine and Gregory's, Elijah went about his work with a mind at ease. Selina had decided to work more on transcribing his diaries (which, since she was doing it only occasionally was proving to take an awfully long time) in the library and had said that she wouldn't be taking a break for a while. Thus, when Elijah heard the knock on his office door, he got in his jeans, took off his shirt, and strode to the door with a big smile on his face. But when the door opened to reveal his wife, she didn't look like someone who'd come for sex. In fact, she took one look at him and conveyed an expression of absolute disgust.

"You're really awful, you know that?" She cried, striding in without even giving him a chance to respond before plunking one of his diaries down on his desk. "Did you think that you were gonna be able to get away with this forever? That I would never find out about what you did?"

"Whatever do you mean?" Elijah asked.

Selina then opened his diary up to a page. "Let me tell you! May 3rd, 1928: 'Had lesson with Selina last night that was unfortunately interrupted by Katerina. Due to their past association, the sight of Katerina made Selina very angry and caused her to run off. Decided to wipe her memory of that incident so that all the progress we've made in the last year won't be for nothing'. How the hell could you do that to me? Did you think I would never find out?"

"Exactly," Elijah replied, standing up. "And when I agreed to let you transcribe my diaries, I completely forgot that was in there, otherwise I would have been more careful."

"Or you just wouldn't have written it down in the first place," Selina said, putting the open diary down in on his desk and standing in front of him with crossed arms. "So, what rationale did you use to tell yourself that wiping my memory was all right?" She scoffed. "Probably the same one Daddy and Doctor Stensrund used on me when I was a child to deprive me of memories of the only loving parent I had, since Mama's feelings were more important than mine."

"The rationale I used was that the only way you were going to move forward is if you had trust in me," Elijah replied. "At that point, I was the only man you trusted enough to be good for, and if I hadn't wiped your memory, can you honestly tell me that you would have kept moving in a positive direction? That you would have trusted me enough to get on that boat out of Paris and give your life a new start? Or would you have just been so angry with me that you would have run off with Klaus and Anna just to spite me and thus never have known what it feels like to have a loving home and a loving family?"

Selina looked like she wanted to make an angry retort, but couldn't think of anything to say. "Fine, you have a point," she said at last. "But it was still wrong, and I'm sleeping in the spare bedroom tonight."

"All right," Elijah replied. "But before you storm off, can I have my diary back?"

"Sure," Selina nodded. "I'm done with it anyway."

When she left, he looked at the pages that offended her, tore them out, ripped them into pieces, and threw them in the trash before resuming the book he'd been reading before she'd come barging in to his office.

"So what in the world did Mom do to Grandma?" Elizabeth asked Laura and Edward when they met her and Charlie on Elizabeth's lunch break.

"Your mother didn't really do anything," Edward replied. "Your grandmother was just trying so hard to let us have a pleasant evening that she overdid it a bit."

"But she's okay, right?" Charlie asked.

"Of course," Laura nodded. "Sure. Although she had me worried there for a minute."

"Do you think it would be a problem if Elizabeth and I went to see her together?" Charlie asked.

"Well, as Elizabeth is not her mother, it should be just fine," Edward replied. "I don't think you need to worry."

"All right," Charlie replied. "Just checking."

The next day, they went to Selina's, and when she answered the door, Elizabeth was concerned that she wouldn't be let in."

"Why wouldn't you?" Selina asked. "You're not your mother. Besides, I'm working on being better about your mother anyway, so I'd even let her in my house now."

"So what happened at that dinner?" Charlie asked. "I mean, unless you don't want to talk about it. Then you don't have to answer."

"Oh, I can talk about it," Selina replied. "When I was human, I had a bit of a drinking issue. When I was in my early teens, I had a bad experience with men, and the way I was told to deal with it was to drink until I passed out, and then in the morning, I'd be so worried about the hangover, I wouldn't think of the troubling thing again. And that's what I've always done. Now, your grandfather, bless him, has tried for years to get me to find other ways to deal with my problems besides smoking and drinking, and for the most part, I've done pretty well. It's just that when I get around your mother, Elizabeth, this whole host of mental trouble worthy of a Hitchcock movie just takes over my brain and it's so…scary that the only way I can deal with it is drinking. If I'm not allowed to punch Katherine in the face, that is. And since your grandfather wanted a calm night, face punching was not an option."

"What went on between you and my mom?" Elizabeth asked. "I mean, she doesn't seem to have as many problems with you as you do with her, but I know there's still friction."

"Well, the person who is the cause of the trouble always has fewer problems than the person who bears the brunt of the results of the trouble," Selina replied. "Long story short, although your mother didn't personally turn me into a vampire, she was responsible for all the events that led to my transformation."

"But why would Mom want you to be a vampire?" Elizabeth asked. "What's the point?"

"I've been asking myself that for years," Selina replied. "Cause originally, her interest in me was because I was around to stop her from being killed by your uncle and used as a sacrifice in a ceremony that would turn him into a hybrid and she wanted to make sure that I lived that long or whatever. And then there was this other issue about her wanting to get her hands on a family heirloom that belonged to my ex-fiance (which was probably why she had me turned into a vampire-she didn't want me interfering with her getting that jewelry, which was possessed by the spirit of a friend she'd betrayed, and who'd probably come out to kill her if she didn't destroy it.) That wasn't how it went down, but there you go. I was turned and my life destroyed for nothing, all thanks to her."

"Wow, that's harsh," Charlie replied.

"Yeah," Selina nodded. "And then there's the whole thing about her and your grandfather being lovers in the past which is not something I like to think about-"

"Really?" Elizabeth wrinkled her nose. "They were?"

"Yeah," Selina nodded. "And if I scarred you for life by telling you that, I'm sorry."

"No," Elizabeth said, feeling a little disgusted. "It's okay."

"Let's do something else," Selina said, clapping her hands. "Enough talking about this." She paused. "Unless you both have to go to work."

"No, I'm taking the day off today," Charlie replied.

"Me too," Elizabeth agreed. "I've got someone covering for me at the magazine, so…how about we go to a movie?"

"Sure!" Selina replied. "Sounds like fun. I'll pay."

"Oh, Grandma, you don't have to!" Elizabeth said.

"I want to," Selina replied. "And I'm not taking 'no' for an answer."

"All right," Elizabeth conceded. "But before we go to the movie, since it's almost lunch time, can we stop and get pizza?"

"I'm home, Mom!" Eli called, hanging his coat up in the closet and looking for Laura to tell her that he was home from school. "Are you working?"

"No, I'm here!" Laura called. "Wanna play some cards?"

"Sure," Eli replied. "And before you ask, no, I don't have a girlfriend yet."

"Oh, honey. You don't have to rush with that," Laura replied, coming out from the guest bathroom by the kitchen to take a seat at the card table after he sat down across from her and she dealt out the cards. "I only brought that up because of Rebecca."

"Yeah, I know I messed up with her," Eli nodded, picking up his cards. "But I still think she's very pretty."

"Well, maybe, someday you'll meet a woman who looks a lot like her," Laura replied. "Got any threes?"

"No," Eli shook his head. "Go fish."

They played cards until Edward got home, then he helped Eli with his homework and Laura went downstairs to color her hair and prepare for the next day's appointments.
