Unbeknownst to them, a small service goblin hurried out of the library, where he had been reparations to a shelf near the Book of Families, with one line running through his head.
"You, Lady Potter, are muggle-born and a descendant of Merlin. You, Lady Potter, are muggle-born and a descendant of Merlin. You, Lady Potter, are muggle-born and a descendant of Merlin. Descendant of Merlin. Descendant of Merlin. Descendant of Merlin..."

The goblin didn't stop to think. He ran straight to his assistant overseer, who in turn ran to his overseer. The chain continued through twenty-seven levels of assistant overseers, junior overseers, and senior overseers. By the time it travelled all the way back to Director Ragnok, the gossip had spread throughout most of the bank, and was in the midst of spilling into Diagon Alley.
As the news slowly spread throughout Wizarding Britain that Merlin's descendant had been found, and that it was none other than Lily Potter, four people scattered across the kingdom began to make preparations for their own ideas of the future. XX

Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, Order of Merlin (first class), Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards, and Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot sat at his desk, thinking. What most people didn't know was that family magic tended to get stronger over the generations. If Lily was a descendant of Merlin, then her son, Harry, would be the… Albus did some quick calculations. Yes, it seemed Harry would be the 313th descendant of Merlin. Hmm… that had definite possibilities. 313 was considered a highly magically potent number, and descendants of that order were rumoured to be extremely powerful. Perchance young Harry would be interested in an automatic spot on the Quidditch team? And the boy would have to be a Gryffindor, of course. It would certainly not do to have this beacon of power in Slytherin, or, Merlin forbid, Hufflepuff.
The old man rose from his seat and took a few lemon drops. Popping them into his mouth, he strolled jauntily towards the door, plans to manipulate Harry Potter to be putty in his hands already being set in motion. But first, he was going to change into something more… manipulative. Purple, maybe.

Rita Skeeter, Chief Reporter for the Daily Prophet, had just been informed that something big was happening by one of her most trusted sources.
"Are you sure? If this is wrong, it will be one of the last mistakes I ever make. And if I go down, you're coming with me," Rita threatened. Her accomplice shivered.
"Yes, I'm sure. It's spreading quickly. If you're going to write about it, you had better do it sooner than later."
Rita thought to herself. This could ruin the Potters. But, on the other hand, it could also make me a fortune…
Her mind made up, she hurried to the Editor's office, preparing to have the conversation of her entire career.

Director Ragnok of Gringotts was walking back to his office from a meeting with the Bones family - they were looking to make preparations for their daughter's future should anything happen to them - when he was ambushed by two of his most trusted associates.
"Director, sir-" "The most terrible news-" "Is it true-" "Damage control-" "Do something about it!" The two goblins stumbled over each other in their effort to inform him of the most horrible event that had just transpired.
"Calm down. Good, now explain to me what has happened," Ragnok stopped them, but before they could explain, another goblin rushed up.
"Is it true? Are the Potters really descendants of Merlin?" he near-shouted, not realising that his question would change the fate of the Potters, one way or another.
Ragnok paled. He had conducted the Potters' interview in complete privacy. Who would have leaked this information? It couldn't have been any of the Potters, as they were adamant that this was to remain secret.
"How did you find out about this? Who told you?" he roared, frightening the poor goblin out of his skin.
"I-I don't know, it's everywhere, I c-came straight to you after I heard it!" the aforementioned poor goblin stuttered.
Ragnok growled in disbelief.
"You! Yes, you. Go, now, conduct a search. Where there's a rumour, there's a source. Find it. Now. Go!" he bellowed after a moment of terrified silence from the goblin in question, who happened to be his personal assistant. As she ran off to complete her duty, Ragnok stalked to his office. The contingency plan needed to be dusted off and set back on the shelf.

Somewhat ironically, Lily and James Potter were the last (or so it seemed) to hear about the security leak. Unfortunately, they had to find out by way of a thousand people gathered outside the gates to their home.
"What's been happening? We need to get through, why is everyone out here?" Lily asked, directing the question at one of the closest gatherers.
"Don't you know? It's everywh- No way! Hey, everybody, look, it's Lily Potter- or should I say Myrrdin? So it's true, then? Everyone's been talking about it. Can you tell us more?" the person asked rapidfire.
Lily turned to her husband. There was only one thing that could have made this much of a fuss, but there was absolutely no way that it could have spread, especially this fast.
"Ragnok said that meeting was held in complete security, that nobody even knew we were there! What happened?"
James, however, had an idea. He hypothesised that either Ragnok had had an ulterior motive and spread the information for his own gain (that was quickly shot down- nobody could figure out what he had to gain) or that somebody was deemed so unimportant they went unnoticed during the meeting and decided to share the juicy bit of gossip just landed on their plate.
"That's the most likely option," agreed the unidentified person. "You know, I just want a world where everyone is happy, and peace is the only rule."
"Wha- Who are you?" Lily exclaimed.
"Sorry, I'll go." The person walked away.
"Anyway… James, what are we going to do?" Lily asked desperately.

SO SORRY FOR THE WAIT! I WAS REALLY BUSY! Also- this is part of a lead up to a plot thingy, so please don't hate and ask me what the hell this has to do with anything, especially if you don't specify what exactly you're referencing. Thanks!
