chapter 32
Celty nearly fell off the couch when the door flew open, Shinra, Kadota, Shizuo and Kasuka pouring into the house one after another. Shizuo went straight to Shinra's computer while the others, as Celty figured, piled into the kitchen for an after school snack. Celty leaned back into the couch, continuing her video game. Shizuo logged into his video chat account, waiting as the page loaded. He was still partially sweaty from the hot walk home, but with Izaya waiting on the other end of the chat, he couldn't care less. The chat loaded and the screen popped up, Shizuo graced with Izaya's smiling face. The raven haired teen was in his dorm, drinking from a soda bottle as he set aside a text book to grin at Shizuo. "Hey, babe~"
"Hey." Shizuo sort of wished he had at least wiped the sweat from his face before starting the video chat. "How'd your day go?"
"Boring," Izaya chuckled, shrugging a little bit. "Classes passed by fairly easy and I bought myself some soda...well, a lot of soda. My room mate drinks a lot of soda, too, so this might be interesting."
Shizuo had meet Izaya's room mate on their last video chat session. He was a guy probably a year older than Izaya, with hair that he had dyed snow white and a lip piercing that had Shizuo's insanely curious. He had been nice when they talked, assuring Shizuo that he'd make sure Izaya did all his homework and stayed out of trouble and away from drugs. "You're going to have a war over soda with him?"
"But of course," Izaya laughed. "Ritsu is quite the amusing sight when angry over soda. It's hilarious. What are you doing at Shinra's?"
"Video games," Shizuo shrugged and smiled a bit. "Kasuka and I might stay over but we aren't sure yet. We're waiting for a confirmation text from mom."
Izaya's head cocked to the side and he hesitated. "How is that? Home, I mean?"
School had started a good two months ago and it had been a good three weeks since Shizuo moved in with his family again. Izaya hadn't asked on account of avoiding any sour conversation but now, he was too curious and worried. Shizuo shrugged a little, running a hand through his hair. "It's aright. Dad's never really home...and when he is he kinda just avoids me, like I'm not even there."
"But your mom's better, isn't she?" Izaya asked softly.
Shizuo nodded slowly. "Yeah...she's better. Not as great as your mom, though."
"Do you go over often?" Izaya had opened his text book again, reading over a sentence.
"Yeah, a few times a week." Shizuo nodded, glancing over as Shinra and the other boys entered the room with food. Kadota handed Shizuo a soda and waved to Izaya before leaving for the couch. Shizuo smiled and looked back at the computer. "Your sisters miss you like crazy."
"I bet," Izaya smiled softly as he leaned back a little. "I was going to call them later this evening. Do you have homework?"
"Not much," Shizuo replied slowly, cracking open his soda can. "I finished most of it during last period, but I still have math homework to do later."
"Ah, your favorite subject." Izaya teased as he snickered. "Ritsu's worse at math than you are, so don't feel too down about it."
"Gee, thanks." Shizuo rolled his eyes playfully. "Kadota offered to help me study when I don't understand something, so I think I'll be alright this year."
"I'd hope so." Izya smiled softly. "I'd like to attend your graduation this year, Shizuo. So you better graduate."
"I will, don't worry." Shizuo rolled his eyes.
Izaya's eyes took on a teasing glint. "Yeah, well-"
"Are you talking to Shizuo?!"
The sound of Izaya's room mate's voice had Izaya jerking, blinking when his lap top was taken from him. "Hey! Ritsu!"
Shizuo blinked as he met a pair of wide green eyes and a wide, feral grin. Ritsu, who had apparently taken Izaya's laptop, waved at him. "Hi Shizuo!"
"Hi, Ritsu." Shizuo sighed, mildly amused. He let his chin rest in his palm. "How were your classes today?"
"They were awesomely boring as all hell." Ritsu stuck his tongue out, aggravated. He was one of the weird ones, as Izaya would say. Loud and obnoxious usually, until night came when he became quite and, as Izaya had put it, a little scary. "Some loser took my flash drive and my essay went to shit and...yeah, so how was your day, Shizuo?"
"Uneventful," Shizuo murmured. "Are you going to give Izaya his computer back?"
"Not a chance," Ritsu snickered, shaking his head quickly. "He's got homework to do and he's been putting it off for days. You can't be distracting him, dude."
"He isn't distracting me!" Izaya snapped from somewhere off screen. "Ritsu give it back or so help me-"
"Anyways~" Ritsu smiled at Shizuo. "Once he gets his work done it's cool. I promised to keep him in check. But, you know...he really does over work himself sometimes."
"I know," Shizuo laughed very softly.
"He hasn't even gone to a single party." Ritsu sighed. "Not that there's a bunch of parties all the time, but there's been a few and he's been invited to all of them. He doesn't go, he just sits here reading. Tell him to get out and do stuff, Shizuo!"
Shizuo was truthfully a little glad that Izaya hadn't gone to any parties. Parties had alcohol and teenagers and...Shizuo didn't want to think about. He shifted a bit in his seat. "Well if he doesn't wanna go.."
"Dude, he needs to lighten up." Ristu groaned, pouting at the screen.
"Shut up, Ritsu, and give me my damn laptop!" Izaya hissed from off screen.
Shizuo laughed a little bit. "Izaya, I'll just call you later, alright?"
"Lame!" Ritsu groaned.
"Ristu!" Izaya snapped. "I love you, Shizuo!"
"Love you too, babe." Shizuo chuckled before turning off the computer. He turned and ran a hand through his hair, watching as his friends fought over watching movies or playing video games. He smiled to himself and then stood, smirking. "Hey Shinra, let's play a video game. Loser buys lunch tomorrow."
"You're so on!" Shinra exclaimed.
"Izaya, come on." Ritsu, hand on his hip, stared at the raven haired teen in agitation. Izaya was ignoring his very existence, as he usually did when he was upset. Shuffling on his feet, the white haired teen groaned silently. "Dude, you never do anything. You've been invited to all the parties here and you haven't gone to any of them! Stop being a bookworm for once and have fun. "
"I have plenty of fun with my text books and my video chat dates," Izaya stated firmly as he turned a page nonchalantly in his book. He didn't even really bother to look at the other boy.
"Whatever dirty ass things you and Shizuo were planning to do over video chat I'm sure you can wait another night." Ritsu deadpanned. "Plus it's still early in the year, I know for a fact that pretty soon the parties are gonna have to stop because everyone's going to be too busy with essays, book reports and projects! I'm just asking you to go to one party, Izaya." He sat down on the edge of Izaya's bed and pushed his hair out of his eyes before looking at Izaya once more. "It won't kill you, dude...so come on. Please? Do you really wanna tell Shizuo that your entire college experience was spent in a dorm room with books when we all know very well just how much of a player you are? Izaya Orihara of Ikkebukuro? You're legendary and this bookworm thing...it's cute, but not convincing."
Izaya heaved a heavy sigh and closed his text book, exhausted. He fixed Ritsu with a narrowed eye glare before leaning closer, a smirk slowly forming on his lips. "Oh, I'm sorry to have ruined your imagery of me, Ritsu. Yes, I do enjoy a good party, and I was invited to many last year, but I refused so that I could be with Shizuo."
"But Shizuo isn't here," Ritsu murmured, his own little smirk forming. "It's one party. Have fun for once...not like Shizuo will know. What's the worst that'll happen?"
For a few long, draining moments, Izaya just simply stared at Ritsu. He was irritated, that was obvious, but Ritsu had challenged him and the part of him that was just too simply Izaya still loved a good challenge. With a small, resigned sigh, Izaya nodded. "Alright, I'll go."
Ritsu grinned and all but yanked Izaya up. "Sweet!
He didn't answer...again. Shizuo set his phone aside with a small frown. He had ended up going home that night with Kasuka after all. He was on his bed, lying lazily on his side while an anime played on his laptop. He stared at his phone, at Izaya's name on the screen. He had called Izaya four times and didn't get an answer. At first he thought that maybe Izaya has fallen asleep, but it was only ten; Izaya didn't sleep that early.
He tried not to dwell on it, though; he knew better at this point. So he tossed his phone aside and turned, staring up at the ceiling. He wasn't tired enough to go to sleep, his homework was done, and he was bored. Fun.
He tried not to think about where Izaya was or what he as doing, but the thought kept bugging him. He spent the next hour or so watching anime and sending several texts to Izaya's phone. He almost gave up entirely when his phone suddenly rang. Seeing Izaya's number he flipped his phone open. "Hello?" He sounded a little too happy.
"Yo, Shizuo!" Ristu's voice made Shizuo blink. "Hey, Izaya's kinda...not able to talk right now but I saw how many times you called so I decided to let you know he was alright."
"Oh, well...thanks.." Shizuo murmured. He frowned a little. "Why can't he talk?"
"He's uh..." Ristu paused.
Shizuo could hear muffled giggling that sounded like Izaya. He frowned. "Ritsu? Is that Izaya?"
"Yeah, but uh, he's not in good talking condition." Ritsu snickered.
"Shhhhuuuuut up. "Izaya's voice yelled. There was a thud and then Izaya's giggling voice. "Wha...? Ri-Ritsuuuuu, where'd the bed go, hmmm?"
Shizuo knew slurred and drunken language when he heard it. He took a breath. "Ritsu...is he drunk?"
"Well, yes," Ritsu began slowly, sounding as if he was trying not to laugh. "But, uh, I mean he isn't on drugs, at least, Shizuo."
"Shizu-Chaaaannnn!" Izaya wailed. There was another thud and Ritsu snapped, "Stop falling!"
Shizuo pinched the bridge of his nose. "You take him to a party, Ritsu?"
"He needed to relax," Ritsu murmured. He sighed. "He's fine Shizzy, no worries."
"Don't call me that," Shizuo snapped. "Give Izaya the phone."
Ritsu paused. "...Are you sure? He's wasted, bro."
"Now," Shizuo growled out as he shut his laptop.
"Ok, ok, "Ritsu huffed.
There was a moment of shuffling noises and hurried whispers before Izaya's drunken voice sounded out. "Shizu-Chaaann!"
"Flea," Any ounce of kindness was drained from Shizuo's voice. Did he has a sensitivity to drunken behavior...? "The fuck are you doing?"
There was a pause. "...Laying on the floor. What 'bout you gorgeous?"
Shizuo took a breath and rubbed his temple. "Izaya...weren't you going to study?"
"Study? Nah, more fun goin' to the party." Izaya laughed. He hiccupped. "Ne, ne, Shizu-Chan! Ritsu's nice, you know? I was toooootally wrong about him."
"Eh?!" Ritsu hissed from the back ground. "Did you think I was terrible?!"
Izaya laughed again. "Shizu-Chan! Ritsu's super cuddly~!"
Shizuo blinked. "Cuddly...? Wha..."
"Hey, don't tell him that!" Ritsu hissed. "You're gonna make him think I tried to hit on you."
"Cause' ya did!" Izaya muttered back, snorting with laughter. "Touchin' me."
Shizuo clenched his fist at his side and tried to keep calm. Izaya was drunk. That was all. He took another breath. "Izaya I-"
"Ne, Ritsu's a sloppy kisser though." Izaya sounded like he was pouting.
Shizuo's eyes widened and he froze. What...?
"You..." He couldn't say it at first. "You kissed Ritsu?"
There was a long pause from Izaya's end. Shizuo had started shaking and he slowly sat back down on his bed. Izaya spoke finally. "Just like...twice."
"Fuck." Ritsu's voice replaced Izaya. "Shizuo, dude, it's not what you think-"
"Fuck you!" Shizuo yelled, gritting his teeth. "You told me you'd watch out for him, you bastard! You fucking kissed him?!"
"Shizuo, it was an accident!" Ritsu assured.
"How? You're still fucking sober!" Shizuo growled out.
There was another pause. Then, Ritsu sighed. "...Yes, I kissed him the first time. The second time, he kissed me. Okay? I felt bad the first time, I really did. Yes, I took him to a party. I urged him to go, told him his reputation as the amazing Izaya Orihara from Ikkebukuro was going down the drain. He went because I challenged him...but he had fun. He danced and drank...and...flirted."
Shizuo's breath caught in his throat. It felt hard to breathe, as if his lungs were being squeezed. "...With who?"
"Everyone." Ritsu murmured. "If you don't want to take my word for it, then fine. I'm going to get Izaya into bed. I'm sorry. Goodnight."
Ritsu hung up, leaving Shizuo to stare ahead with wide eyes. He put his phone down and gulped, shaking his head. No, he didn't believe it. He couldn't. Izaya was drunk, sure, and maybe he had kissed Ritsu. But flirted with other people? No way. Izaya wasn't like that.
...Right?
His phone rang again. Shinra.
"Hello?" He tried to keep his voice even.
"Have you made an online page on that social media website Izaya has an account on?" Shinra asked right away.
Shizuo blinked, a little taken back. "Uhm, no...why?"
"Don't make one." Shinra murmured. There was the sound of typing. "Have you talked to Izaya since you left?"
"Tch, yeah, he's drunk off his ass and made out with his room mate," Shizuo snapped. Frustrated he ran a hand through his hair. "Why'd you call?"
"Get online, I emailed you pictures from a party Izaya attended. Your brother emailed me a link to Izaya's profile, that's how I found the pictures." Shinra replied quickly.
Shizuo opened his laptop and paused. Izaya was in college, meaning it was perfectly understandable that he would act up...right? Fingers lingering over the keys on his laptop, Shizuo spoke into his phone. "...Do I want to see whatever it is you're going to show me, Shinra?"
Shinra sighed. "...Well, you already heard that he made out with his room mate. So, I guess it's all down hill from here. You probably don't want to see it, but you should. Knowing Izaya, he'll delete them in the morning."
"He wouldn't do that," Shizuo murmured as he logged into his email.
"I've known him longer than you have, Shizuo." Shinra reminded slowly. "I'm not trying to sound like a dick...but he's acting up and your brother is pissed off. I'm telling you from here, on the phone, to avoid you starting a fight with Kasuka in your house. Don't be angry at me, don't doubt me. I'm not trying to tear the two of you apart. I adore your relationship, you know that. But, I know how Izaya is...how he was before he got all tied up in your life. Some things just never change."
There was a set of emails from Shinra waiting. Shizuo felt his fingers trembling as he opened the first email. "I thought everything was going to be easy now."
As the pictures attached to the email loaded, Shinra spoke softly. "Nothing is easy with you. Nothing is easy with him. Together?...Good luck."
There they were. Pictures.
Izaya looked sober in the first few, arms around the shoulders of girls and guys. As Shizuo scrolled through the first set, he spoke in a shaky voice. "He's uh, he's not drunk here...I know what drunk guys look like..." But Izaya was still holding girls, still letting guys sit in his lap.
"Check the next set," Shinra murmured. Did he sound regretful suddenly?
Shizuo opened the next set. Izaya looked drunk, or at least half way there. There were pictures of him dancing, he could only assume, against people. His hands were all over their bodies. Shizuo grit his teeth shut his laptop. "Ok, enough. I'm done."
"Shizuo, I wasn't trying to upset you." Shinra said quickly. "But you needed to know and if Kasuka had said it you would have-"
"Gotten angry, I know. Shut up." Shizuo hissed out, leaning back. For a while there was only silence. No, Shizuo didn't really want to believe any of this. He refused...but that was also stupid of him. "Why's he being like this?"
"Because he's Izaya and this is what he's like when he forgets his priorities." Shinra murmured back.
Heaving another sigh, Shizuo spoke softly. "I'll talk to him about it tomorrow.
Please don't hate me. Izaya's being a jerk I know but don't worry, I told you before everything ends happy! Sorry it's taking forever for updates, my Wi-Fi is really bad at my house now and I don't get why. anyways, review lovelies?
