Chapter Six
You Are In
Ace walked with the rest of the Gryffindor students to there tower, while they were paying attention to the route he was looking around. Seeing just how old the building is. He looked at the moving paintings, the tapestry the statues. He smiled seeing the Armor look at them as they walked by, the castle it's self felt alive. And thought about how much Luffy would love this place. He even could hear what Luffy be saying, 'How is the paintings moving? It is a mystery Painting. The stairs move Mystery Stairs.' He even could see Luffy nodding as he said this. Only to learn of it being magic and being thrilled. As they climbed the stairs most the students were yawning and acting tired.
"Here we are." He heard Percy saying.
At the very end of the corridor hung a portrait of a very fat woman in a pink silk dress.
"Password?" she said.
"Caput Draconis," said Percy, and the portrait swung forward to reveal a round hole in the wall. They all scrambled through it — Neville needed a leg up. He turned around and saw it was Ace. "Thanks Ace."
"No problem Neville." He stepped through and found himself in the Gryffindor common room, a cozy, round room full of squashy armchairs. There was a board up having notices from the last year wishing everyone a wonderful summer.
Ace looked up seeing Percy looking at all of the first years.
"Congratulations! I'm Prefect Percy Weasley, and I'm delighted to welcome you to GRYFFINDOR HOUSE." He said waving to the common room. "Our emblem is the lion, the bravest of all creatures; our house colors are scarlet and gold, and our common room lies up here in Gryffindor Tower. This is, quite simply, the best house at Hogwarts. It's where the bravest and boldest end up – for instance: Albus Dumbledore! Yes, Dumbledore himself, the greatest wizard of our time, was a Gryffindor! If that's not enough for you, I don't know what is. I won't keep you long. Enjoy your time at Hogwarts – study hard follow the rules. And welcome you have become part of the best house in the school."
Some of the first years clapped Ace just looked at him and yawned.
Percy directed the girls through one door to their dormitory and the boys through another. At the top of a spiral staircase — they were obviously in one of the towers — they found their beds at last: five four-posters hung with deep red, velvet curtains. Their trunks had already been brought up. Ace noticed his stuff at the end of one of the beds. Everyone else in the room seemed to be getting ready to sleep.
"Great food, isn't it?" Ron muttered to Ace through the hangings. "Get off, Scabbers! He's chewing my sheets." Ron said annoyed.
Ace snickered and walked out. He headed down stairs sitting down he looked at the fire that was going. He heard movement and noticed Fred and George walking down stairs. "What you doing?"
Both twin jumped at the noise and saw him. They quickly hid something behind their back.
"Nothing much. Just going to prank the snakes."
"What you going to do?"
Fred smiled "Nothing big just simple color changing spell."
George smiled "Planning to have a timer added so it will change colors during Breakfast."
"It is a new spell we have been working on so if you don't see it-"
"Means it didn't work."
"Need a look out?" Ace said smiling.
George looked to Fred. The exchange made Ace think they could understand each other in their mind.
Fred looked to him "We're good tonight. But here is the deal once you learn the school."
"And find a hidden passage way."
"We will let you join in a prank,"
"So until then learn magic so you can be a help to us." George ended.
Ace didn't like it. But smiled "Sure thing I will hold you too it." He said smirking.
The twins quickly made there way out of the common room. Ace looked as they left and yawned. He looked around the room and decided to go ahead and hit the hay. He walked up stairs to hear the sounds of snoring. "Wow you think I was back on a ship." He noticed that even though Ron was the loudest Neville also was a loud snorer. Ace quickly took his shirt off and climbed into bed falling asleep.
Only he did not get a nice dream. He didn't even visit Marco or Luffy in his dream. His was that of Quirrell's turban talking to him. Telling him to follow him. Telling him he could make him big, make everyone follow him. His dream ended in a flash of green light. Ace sat up and looked around the room to see that everyone but Neville left.
"Oh you're awake. I was about to get you up. Did you sleep ok you were tossing and turning there for awhile."
Ace jumped out of bed and went looking through his trunk for his wand and clothes. "Yeah just a weird dream."
"Wanna talk about it?" Neville said while putting Trevor in a tank.
Ace smiled "Not really."
Neville smiled gathering his things he left to go get breakfasts.
As Ace walked down for his breakfast he had his normal clothes and left behind his robes. He could hear many people talking about him.
"What is that 1st year doing?"
"You know McGonagall will be pissed at him."
"He will soon learn his lesson."
It was not so bad until some how people found out he had been called Harry Potter then the whispers started. It did not bother him but was still annoying once and awhile.
Ace was walking down the stairs when a girl walked up to him. "So you're Harry Potter?"
"No Name is Ace D Portgas." Ace walked past her annoyed.
After that moment people lining up outside classrooms stood on tiptoe to get a look at him, or doubled back to pass him in the corridors again, staring. Everyone wondered if this Ace was the-boy-who-lived.
Ace was getting annoyed not only did the follow him but they made it harder for him to find his way to classes. He was also having to deal with Ron who followed him everywhere like a lost puppy. But during Lunch and dinner he would sit with Lee, Fred, and George.
In the first couple days Ace's had found his way around the castle and it was a pain. He also soon learned just how much he just wanted to just give Mrs. Norris a good kick.
Ace was getting the hang of the classes. The first few classes have been all about rules and what they would be going over the year. Though the class Ace found easy was his lasts class. Every Wednesday at midnight he would go with the other 1st year to the tower and they would study the night skies through their telescopes. He found this to be an easy class. Since one of the trick of sailing is to learn the skies. So when he be in his tree house back in the forest he looked at the sky and learn the stars. Even went and stole a book on the night skies from a book store.
Ace noticed that every time they had Herbology, which is three times a week. Neville loved the class. Neville and Professor Sprout seem to love to talk and learn how to take care of all the strange plants and fungi, and found out what they were used for.
The one class he knew nothing about was History of Magic; only thing he could remember is the teacher is a ghost. He heard after the first class Ron tell him, "Professor Binns had been very old indeed when he had fallen asleep in front of the staff room fire and got up next morning to teach, leaving his body behind him."
Professor Flitwick, the Charms teacher, was a tiny little wizard who had to stand on a pile of books to see over his desk. Ace laughed at how Hermione seemed to be mad anyone would stand on books.
Professor McGonagall was again different. Strict and clever, she gave them a talking-to the moment they sat down in her first class.
"Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts," she said. "Anyone messing around in my class will leave and not come back. You have been warned."
Ace was amused at how she was trying to scare the students. He had also been pulled aside by each of his teachers and told to wear robes. He just smiled but didn't wear them.
He watched as then she changed her desk into a pig and back again. They were all very impressed and couldn't wait to get started.
After taking a lot of complicated notes, they were each given a match and started trying to turn it into a needle. By the end of the lesson, only Hermione Granger had made any difference to her match; Professor McGonagall showed the class how it had gone all silver and pointy and gave Hermione a rare smile.
Ace looked at the match annoyed trying the spell again not knowing that he was doing the wand movement wrong. So he got annoyed and set his desk on fire making everyone freak out.
Minerva had quickly put the fire out looking over to Ace. "Ace, way too much magic into your spell."
Ace shrugged his shoulder. "Sorry."
Soon everyone was left and quickly found out that Defense against the Dark Arts, which is taught by Quirrell, was a joke.
His classroom smelled strongly of garlic, which everyone said was to ward off a vampire he'd met in Romania and was afraid would be coming back to get him one of these days. All Ace could think of the teacher that he was a huge chicken and should not be the teacher and was just trash. His turban, he told them, had been given to him by an African prince as a thank-you for getting rid of a troublesome zombie. When Ace walked next to him and could smell his turban. Making him wonder if the turban been taken off one of the zombies. Since how bad it smelled he over heard Lavender saying how it made her almost gage when he walked next to her in class.
During the week Ace was, having to deal with Ron. And he decided he give the boy a chance. He would have to be around him all year and later years if he came back to the school. Even though the kid bugged him he still was just a kid and needed to grow up. Luffy bothered him till he got to know the boy. But during his time spending with Ron he was able to spend some time with Neville as well. Who he found to be very shy but could see a good person in him. And every night Ace snuck out of his dorm room and looked for secret passage ways and to get to know the school more.
Friday was an important day, and unknown why it be important. Ace walked his way to the Great Hall for breakfast not lost once on the way. He also found a secret passage way and was looking forward to telling the twins about it.
Ace sat down not seeing the twins but heard Ron talking.
"What have we got today?" asked Ron as he poured sugar on his porridge.
"Double Potions with the Slytherins," said Neville.
"Snape's Head of Slytherin House. They say he always favors them — we'll be able to see if it's true." Ron told Neville.
Ace looked at them. "Doesn't matter who favors who." said Ace.
Just then, the mail arrived. Ace had gotten used to this by now, but it been amusing the first day when about a hundred owls had suddenly streamed into the Great Hall during breakfast, circling the tables until they saw their owners, and dropping letters and packages onto their laps.
Dadan hadn't brought Ace anything so far. She sometimes flew in to nibble his ear and have a bit of toast before going off to sleep in the Owlery with the other school owls.
This morning, however, she fluttered down between the marmalade and the sugar bowl and dropped a note onto Ace's plate.
Ace tore it open at once. It said, in a very untidy scrawl:
Dear Ace,
I know you get Friday afternoons off, so would you like to come and have a cup of tea with me around three?
I want to hear all about your first week. Send us an answer back with Dadan.
Hagrid
Ace borrowed Ron's quill, scribbled Sure thing Hagrid. But does it have to be tea? What about rum? But will be there to see you. He handed it to Dadan who flew off.
It was lucky that Ace had tea with Hagrid to look forward to, because the Potions lesson turned out to be the worst thing about this school so far.
Potions lessons took place down in one of the dungeons. It was colder here than up in the main castle. He looked at the torches that lit the corridors he wondered why they seemed so dim. He smirked seeing no one was looking and sent a couple fire balls at them making the room brighter. Ace walked down the brightly lit corridors smiling as he looked at the class room. He noticed how some students felt uneasy. This was silly really it was only some pickled animals floating in glass jars all around the walls.
Ace smiled and noticed that Snape, like Flitwick, started the class by taking the roll call.
"Ah, Yes," he said softly, "Ace Portgas. Seems you don't know how to dress to the school code. Five points from Gryffindor."
Draco Malfoy and his friends Crabbe and Goyle sniggered behind their hands. Snape finished calling the names and looked up at the class. His eyes were black like Hagrid's, though they did not hold the kind warmth Hagrid's did. But were cold like dungeons he taught in.
"You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion making," he began. He spoke in barely more than a whisper, but they caught every word — like Professor McGonagall, Snape had the gift of keeping a class silent without effort. That many teacher magical and muggles wish they could do. To be able to silence the class with a few words, is an art that only a few teachers can do. Some able to do so out of interest making the students want to learn, to the point they are drawn in to learn. Others use the art of respect that McGonagall seemed to be able to use. Then like Snape he is like some teachers who use the art of fear. He makes them know that he is the law and the judge in the classroom.
"As there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this isn't magic. I don't expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses… I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death — if you aren't as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach." He looked at the students with a cold gaze hoping that someone would have the skills for potion making. Maybe some would be like him and Lily.
More silence followed this little speech. Hermione Granger was on the edge of her seat and looked desperate to start proving that she wasn't a dunderhead. Ace could care less he was smart and knew he would do well.
"Portgas!" said Snape suddenly. "What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?"
"I haven't read about that or heard of it, sir. Since you're the teacher shouldn't you tell me," said Ace.
Snape's lips curled into a sneer.
"Lip that will be another five point from your house."
"Let's try again. Portgas, where would you look if I told you to find me a bezoar?"
Hermione stretched her hand as high into the air as it would go without her leaving her seat, but Ace smirked. He tried not to look at Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle, who were shaking with laughter.
"Well I know two places one the students supplies, if not there yours. But hey I could always go to the store and by it."
Snape glared at him "Thought you wouldn't open a book before coming. And I don't stand for lip Mr. Portgas."
Ace forced himself to keep looking straight into those cold eyes. He had looked through his books at the forest, but did Snape expect him to remember everything in One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi? Also he looked more into the dimension traveling book.
Snape was still ignoring Hermione's quivering hand.
"What is the difference, Portgas, between monkshood and wolfsbane?"
At this, Hermione stood up, her hand stretching toward the dungeon ceiling.
"I don't know," said Ace quietly. "I think Hermione does, though, why don't you try her? You're a teacher so shouldn't you be asking all your students."
A few people laughed; Ace looked right into Snape's eyes. Snape keep eye contact. Ace felt as though he was staring at one of the Marine Admirals.
Snape looked at Ace for a long moment then paled ever so slightly. He quickly turned trying to hide it. Ace knew he was the only one who saw it as the teacher walked to his desk.
"Sit down," he snapped at Hermione. "For your information, Portgas, asphodel and wormwood make a sleeping potion so powerful it is known as the Draught of Living Death. A bezoar is a stone taken from the stomach of a goat and it will save you from most poisons. As for monkshood and wolfsbane, they are the same plant, which also goes by the name of aconite. Well? Why aren't you all copying that down?" He said looking at the students.
There was a sudden rummaging for quills and parchment. Over the noise, Snape said, "And a point will be taken from Gryffindor House for your cheek."
"Not many points this early on in the year most likely."
Things didn't improve for the Gryffindors as the Potions lesson continued. Snape put them all into pairs and set them to mixing up a simple potion to cure boils. He swept around in his long black cloak, watching them weigh dried nettles and crush snake fangs, criticizing almost everyone except Malfoy, whom he seemed to like. He also seemed to try and avoid Ace for the rest of the trip.
He was just telling everyone to look at the perfect way Malfoy had stewed his horned slugs when clouds of acid green smoke and a loud hissing filled the dungeon. Ace who was standing next to Neville quickly grabbed his friend and took the cloak he never wore out of his bag in a swift motion covering Neville as the Liquid blasted out covering him and his cloak that keep Neville safe.
Snape had turned and saw that Neville had somehow managed to melt Seamus's cauldron into a twisted blob, and their potion was seeping across the stone floor, burning holes in people's shoes. Within seconds, the whole class was standing on their stools while Neville, and Ace who had been drenched in the potion when the cauldron collapsed. He moved quickly to see Ace had fire covering his body. He looked up and flames vanished. Looking at the situation he saw that Ace had moved and quickly gotten Neville away from the worst of the blast.
"Idiot boy!" snarled Snape, clearing the spilled potion away with one wave of his wand. "I suppose you added the porcupine quills before taking the cauldron off the fire?"
Neville whimpered and looked at him worried. He turned to Ace who looked to be fine.
"Take them up to the hospital wing," Snape spat at Seamus.
Seamus walked with Ace and Neville both boys looked fine. "Ace, I never seen someone move that fast."
Ace smiled "Its nothing couldn't let Neville get hurt."
"Thanks for that Ace are you ok you got hit. And then you were on fire for a moment." Neville said worried about what he hope was his first friend in his life.
As they climbed the steps to the hospital wing. He felt both boys eyes were on him. They quickly got there and before he could get a word in Neville and Seamus quickly told Madam Pomfrey what happen. She fussed over the boys but saw nothing wrong with Ace. And gave Neville a calming drought.
Snape watched as the students left the classroom. He started to caste spells to keep the room safe with all the different potions that get made every day. He now knew that Longbottom will be one to cause problems. So that will be five years of that. But what bothered him were the memories he saw from Harry… Well Ace's mind. He heard he lived in a forest but his memories showed him much more. He wasn't a boy from what he saw.
"Cheer up," said Ron said having joined Ace, Neville and Seamus. "And hey Neville no one got hurt. Can I come and meet Hagrid with you?" He asked Ace.
At five to three they left the castle and made their way across the grounds. Hagrid lived in a small wooden house on the edge of the forbidden forest. A crossbow and a pair of galoshes were outside the front door.
When Ace knocked they heard a frantic scrabbling from inside and several booming barks. Then Hagrid's voice rang out, saying, "Back, Fang —back." Hagrid's big, hairy face appeared in the crack as he pulled the door open. "Hang on," he said. "Back, Fang." He let them in, struggling to keep a hold on the collar of an enormous black boarhound. There was only one room inside. Hams and pheasants were hanging from the ceiling; a copper kettle was boiling on the open fire, and in the corner stood a massive bed with a patchwork quilt over it.
"Make yerselves at home," said Hagrid, letting go of Fang, who bounded straight at Ron and started licking his ears. Then made his way to Neville and then to Seamus. Like Hagrid, Fang was clearly not as fierce as he looked.
"This is Ron, Neville, and Seamus. I am sorry I should have informed you that I was bringing more than myself." Ace told Hagrid, who was pouring boiling water into a large teapot and putting rock cakes onto a plate.
"It is alright Ace. Another Weasley, eh?" said Hagrid, glancing at Ron's freckles.
"I spent half me life chasin' yer twin brothers away from the forest. And Neville Longbottom. Miss your parents' good people they are. You sure have grown up since you were a little lad. How is your Grandma?"
Neville blushed having everyone look at him. "She is good."
Hagrid looked to Seamus "By the way name is Hagrid nice to meet you."
Seamus smiled at him "Nice to meet you sir."
"Don't call me Sir call me Hagrid." He said putting down the food. The rock cakes were shapeless lumps with raisins that almost broke their teeth, but Neville, Seamus and Ron pretended to be enjoying them as they told Hagrid all about their first lessons. While Ace kept eating them which got weird looks from the other three.
Fang rested his head on Neville's knee and drooled all over his robes. While the boy was petting him.
Seamus and Ron were delighted to hear Hagrid call Filch "that old git."
"An' as fer that cat, Mrs. Norris, I'd like ter introduce her to Fang sometime. D'yeh know, every time I go up ter school, she follows me everywhere? Can't get rid of her — Filch puts her up to it?"
"She is a mean cat do you think Fang wouldn't be scared of her." Ace stated while petting the big dog.
Hagrid looked to Fang "Er a right old coward… But you still scare that cat." Fang barked happy.
Ron looked to Hagrid and started to tell about Snape's lesson. Hagrid looked to Ace about to tell him not to worry about it.
"I don't care I understand some people will not like me. I can also see after what Happen with Neville. Sorry Neville." He said looking over at him. "A little mistake could get people hurt. And so he has to be stern otherwise kids will horse off and students will be hurt."
"That ther is very wise of you Ace." Hagrid said smiling. "Yer just like your mum. She be proud of you for that. Now How's yer brother Charlie?" Hagrid asked Ron. "I liked him a lot — great with animals."
Ace looked over and saw the newspaper sitting near by and started reading it.
GRINGOTTS BREAK-IN LATEST
Investigations continue into the break-in at Gringotts on 31 July, widely believed to be the work of Dark wizards or witches unknown. Gringotts goblins today insisted that nothing had been taken. The vault that was searched had in fact been emptied the same day.
"But we're not telling you what was in there, so keep your noses out if you know what's good for you," said a Gringotts spokes goblin this afternoon.
Ace remembered Ron telling him on the train that someone had tried to rob Gringotts. And then when he went the day after he noticed the commotion going on at the bank.
"Hagrid!" said Ace, "that Gringotts break-in happened the day we went to Gringotts! It might've been happening while we were there!"
There was no doubt about it; Hagrid definitely didn't meet Ace's eyes this time. He grunted and offered him another rock cake. Ace read the story again. The vault that was searched had in fact been emptied earlier that same day. Hagrid had emptied vault seven hundred and thirteen, if you could call it emptying, taking out that grubby little package. Had that been what the thieves were looking for? Ace could kick himself for not stealing the package and looking at it when he had a chance. He put it back but to know what they wanted.. Was biting at him.
Seamus looked to Ace who was reading the paper. "So Ace what class you like."
"Lunch and Dinner."
"That's not a class." Seamus said getting Ron and Neville to laugh.
"It is to me. Well Hagrid I have to go." He said smiling and started to leave. But not before he and the others had their pockets weighed down with rock cakes.
While he was walking, he was thinking about what info been given to him. Hagrid had collected that package just in time. The third corridor is off limits. The safest place to have anything is at Gringotts except Hogwarts. That package was in the third corridor and he wanted to know what was there. And who tried to steal it and how much is it worth.
Ace found it funny how so many people hated Draco. He could care less. He only hated one man with pure hatred and that is Black Beard. He knew he was going to go home to see his brothers. And he needed to be stronger and have something against that man. He hated him, with these thoughts he made his way out of the castle not knowing that two people were watching him leave and paying attention to him leaving the grounds and making his way to the lake.
Ace looked at the night sky and took off his robe and shirt he started to take off running around the lake to get faster and get his body in better shape than it been before.
Fred looked to George and both of them walked to the window and watched Ace running around the lake. They were shocked at how fast the boy could be. Then they watch him stop and start to go through fighting motions as if he was fighting someone. They could not believe it when they noticed him sending fire blast at the lake.
Fred looked at the Ace. "George Lets-"
"Go." Fred said.
Both twins made there way out to the lake. As they made there way out there they noticed Ace was surrounded by fire and controlling it. "Ace."
Ace turned seeing the twins who were giving him a strange look. He quickly made the flames vanish and walked over to his shirt picking it up.
George and Fred both noticed just how in shape he was. They only had seen some Quidditch players be in that great of shape. And most were pro. "So how did you do that?" Both said.
"Do what?" Ace said looking at them.
"The-"
"Fire!" Fred finished looking at him.
Ace looked at them. 'I guess my devil fruit is something they can't do.' "I have always been able to do this." He said and fire busted forth and engulfed him in flames Ace smiled in the fire and waved his hand and the flames moved like it was dancing and went to his hand.
Fred smiled "well that is really cool."
"Yeah wish I could do that." George said looking at him.
"But why are you out here looking like you are fighting?"
"I just needed to clear my head."
Fred walked over putting his hand on his shoulder, "That did not look like you were clearing your head mate."
"Looked like you were fighting someone Ace" George said looking him in the eyes.
Ace looked at them. "Look someone killed, someone I care about. And I want to be strong enough if I have to ever face him or anyone else wanting to hurt someone I care about. I can deal with them my self."
Fred and George looked to each other thinking that Ace was talking He who must not be names. Unknown to them that it was someone much worse than that. Someone no one from this world would want to face.
Ace walked back with the Twins to the tower.
"So Ace, have you found a any passage ways."
"Well I did figure out how to get into the Slytherin common room."
Both twins stopped dead in there tracks. No one has been able to get into any of the other common room for 400 years how is it this first year could. They smiled at him, Fred looked to George. "I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship. So lead the way."
Ace nodded and started to lead them George was looking at the map not letting Ace know and was wondering how he was avoiding everyone he be heading on way then stop them saying someone was up ahead and they needed to go a different route.
Unknown to them was that Ace was just using a type of Haki.
Ace smiled walking to a wall. "Come on Ace you didn't get Lost." George said.
Fred looked to his brother, "I hope he hasn't, be sad if he can't join us."
Ace looked to the two. "No it's just someone is in the room I am waiting." Fred looked over George who moved looking at a map.
When they did this Ace smiled "It's clear." He turned to the wall "Basilisk." When he said this the wall opened. He walked in smiling. Leaving the Twins in a state of shook. "Boys I welcome you to the Slytherin common room."
Fred and George looked at Ace. "You're in."
Ace smiled looking at them.
They decided to leave since they wanted to plan a good prank on that common room. So they would come back the next day.
George looked to Ace who was bout to walk in his room. "Night Ace, see you in the morning. Also you're one of us." They said smiling.
Ace nodded and walked to his bed hearing the snoring though it was only Dean and Seamus he wondered where Neville and Ron were. He shrugged his shoulder and jumped on his bed passing out.
Ace was looking around he was standing in a forest that he had never been before. He walked up ahead seeing Jimbei was walking away. He ran forward to see his brother lying on the ground crying. Ace walked forward only to see his hand go through. "Luffy come on I am right here. Luffy look at me. Luffy I am ok. Please brother look at me. I promise I will come back. It just taking some time. Please don't cry." The 11 year old Ace fell to his knees seeing he could do nothing for his little brother. As watched his brother lean back his head and let out such a painful heart-wrenching scream. Ace sat there for the night watching his brother as he sat there wishing he could hold his brother. Or let him know it be alright.
A/N: End of another chapter. I hope you all enjoyed it and please let me know what you think.
