Chapter 12: Answers Part 2 (BPOV)
Renesmee stepped into the car.
"Hey, Ren. How was your-" I started.
"Do you know Nikolas De Luca?" she interrupted.
I took a minute to see if the name rang a bell. "No… No, I don't think I do… Why? Is something wrong?" I asked, turning around in my seat to face her.
She just looked at me. After a minute of silence, she sighed. "No, nothing's wrong. He just acted like he knew you when I told him your name…"
"Where is he from?" Edward asked.
"Everywhere." she laughed. "San Francisco… Portland… I forget the other places he mentioned."
"Well… We've never been to San Francisco, and haven't been to Portland in years…" Edward mused. "De Luca… Is that Italian?"
"Yeah." she answered. "Both of his parents were Italian."
Edward cast a look towards me. "'Were'?"
"Yep. Nik is emancipated. Hasn't lived with his parents in years."
"Oh…"
"Are you positive that you don't know him, Bella? He acted almost… Scared… of you."
Edward laughed. "Scared? Of Bella?" At Renesmee's nod, Edward laughed harder.
I glared at him. He stopped.
"I thought the same thing, Edward!" Renesmee started, sitting up and resting her elbows on the console.
"Hey!" I interrupted.
"See!" Edward shouted playfully.
"BUT-" Renesmee continued, "-I realized that someone as nice as she is, has to be a bitch at other times. Am I right, Bella?" She smiled at me.
I laughed. "Yes! Thank you, Renesmee."
She chuckled.
Edward laughed softly. "Whatever,"
I glared at him again, and this time, Renesmee stared him down with a look that expressed her "fear" of me. One glance at her, and Edward immediately started laughing and glanced at me.
"Sorry, love." he apologized, and gave me a quick kiss on the lips.
"You're forgiven," I smiled.
He laughed again.
As she sat back, Renesmee sighed. "Whatever. You're never gonna catch me getting on her bad-side. And when you do, Edward, you're going to wish you had listened to me in this exact moment."
We both laughed at our daughter.
Suddenly, I realized that this is what we'd missed out on after she was taken- this… banter… between us. It felt natural for her to give reasons be afraid of me, and not her father- like it should be at her "age". It felt natural to make fun of Edward with her; for her to sit in the back of the car as though Edward's stupid enough to make fun of me…
As though she hadn't been taken…
As though she did remember us.
As though nothing had changed…
***(RPOV)
We go home not long after the "fight" Edward, Bella, and I got into.
Having no homework, I headed upstairs to my room, ditching my bag on the floor and throwing myself on my bed.
"Ugh!" I groaned into a pillow. It honestly hadn't shocked me that neither Bella or Edward didn't know Nik, but it did frustrate me to no end that his reaction still made no sense whatsoever.
Bing.
My phone went off from inside my back pocket.
I groaned again and reached for it.
An unknown number popped up with a text of: "You home yet?"
Me: Who is this?
Unknown: Oops. Forgot you didn't have my number, lol. It's Nik.
Me: Oh… Just question… How did you get this number?
Nikolas: Ahh… You just gotta know that I have my ways, Ren.
Me: Umm… Okay… I guess…
Nikolas: So are you?
Me: Am I what?
Nikolas: Home yet?
Me: Yeah… Actually just walked through my door. Why?
Nikolas: Wanna leave town for a bit? There's an Italian restaurant that really good in the next town over?
Me: … Are you asking me out on a date?
Nikolas: No, lol. Nothing like that. Just thought you wouldn't mind getting out of town for a few hours.
Before I could tell him no, Alice burst through my door.
"Let's go!" she yelled, grabbing my arm.
"Ow, Alice! Let go! And go where?" I demanded.
"Shopping!"
I jerked my arm away. "No. No shopping!"
"Renesmee!" she whined. "Why not?"
"Because…" I tried to come up with an excuse. Suddenly, Nik's offer, didn't sound half bad. "Because I'm going out later. With a friend from school."
Her eyes narrowed. "Where?"
I shrugged. "Don't know. He just said an Italian restaurant outside of town."
She gasped, eyes widening. "A boy?! You're going out with a boy?! What's his name? What's he like? Is he cute? Smart?"
"Did I hear someone mention 'going out with a boy'?" Edward appeared in my doorway, a weary look on his face and his arms crossed over his chest.
"Yeah… Nik just asked me if I wanted to get out town for a bit." I explained to him.
"The same Nik you talked about in the car?" he asked, stepping into the room to stand beside his sister.
"Yes."
"How did he get your number? Did you give it to him?" Alice asked.
"No, I didn't give it to him. I honestly don't know how he got it." I told her truthfully.
My phone went off again.
Nikolas: I'm taking your silence as a no, I guess?
Me: No, no… Take it as a yes.
Nikolas: Okay. Pick you up in an hour?
Me: Perfect.
"Do you have any homework?" Edward asked.
"Nope."
"None? Absolutely sure?" he sounded desperate.
"Y-"
"What is going on in here?" Bella asked, coming to my doorway with Esme next to her.
"Renesmee's 'friend', Nik, asked her to go out of town with him." Edward said bitterly, through clenched teeth.
All the girls laughed.
"Look, it's not like it's a date! Just a chance to get out of Forks for a bit."
We all looked at Edward for a few minutes.
He looked pained as he said: "Fine. But be back by 9:30, and I expect a text or call when you get wherever you're going, and when you're getting ready to leave. Can you agree to that?"
"Yes, I can." I told him, then bit my lip as I cast my gaze over to Esme.
She laughed. "Of course. Just listen to Edward… If you don't, he'll send search parties."
"She's not kidding." Edward warned seriously. "I really will."
I laughed. "I believe you."
A/N: *Disclaimer* I own nothing!
Since I haven't done this in a while, I'm gonna start again now. My favorite line is: "You're never gonna catch me getting on her bad-side."
