Chapter Nineteen: I'm Sorry (JPOV)
The movie had just ended.
It had been difficult sitting through an hour and a half long movie next to the girl that I loved- even though I knew that she didn't love me back at the moment.
I looked over to Nessie, where she had fallen asleep. I chuckled softly and covered her up to her chin with the blanket Sue made her for her first birthday. It was black and had her name written in white thread. Ness had always liked it because it "felt like me," as she was sure that my wolf form felt like the fuzzy blanket. I gently tucked her in, and watched as she snuggled deeper into the couch.
Damn, she was adorable.
My cell started ringing from the kitchen.
"Shit," I cursed quietly, and took her feet off my lap to get the phone before she woke up. Luckily, she still slept the way she had before- like a baby.
I didn't check the number before I answered. "What do you want?" I hissed quietly.
"Damn, Jake, what crawled up your ass?" Jared laughed.
I rolled my eyes. "What do you want, Jared?" I whispered again.
"Dude, why are you whispering?"
"Nessie's asleep. I don't want to wake her." I replied, looking around the corner and into the living room, making sure she was still sleeping.
"Doesn't she go to school?"
"Yeah, but she passed out right before we left. Doc didn't think it was a good idea to let her go today." I explained, looking through the window above the sink.
"Is she okay?" he asked. You'd never believe that, just seven years ago, an entire pack of wolves wanted my imprint dead. Within the time it took to band together more than a dozen bloodsuckers from around the world, Nessie had wrapped most of her potential killers around her little fingers. She was part of the family- hell, still is. After Sam's pack found out about my imprinting on a baby, Quil started making fun of me, considering that, no matter how mature Nessie may seem, she was still younger than Claire. Where Nessie was seven and a junior in high school, Claire was nine and in fourth grade.
All the other imprints fell in love with Nessie almost as quick as I did- you know… After the urge of wanting to kill her. Emily, Kim, and Rachel especially. Claire did, too, for a little while at least. She thought it was awesome to have someone her age to play with, even if she seemed older.
"I think she is… We watched a movie before she fell asleep, though she didn't act like anything was wrong. But who knows? She's too much like Bella when it comes to stuff like that."
Jared chuckled. "That she is…"
It was quiet for a little bit until I realized I didn't know why he'd call. "Anyway, what do you need, Jared?"
"Oh, right. Sam wanted you to know- don't freak out, either- that on patrol last night they came across a scent they didn't recognize. A vamps scent. It was old, and didn't seem to leave the woods. Plus, there was a dead deer about a mile from where it started."
I tensed. "So he didn't recognize it?"
"No."
"So he doesn't think that it's the Vol-" I couldn't even speak the word.
"No. He doesn't. Unless they got a new member, then it's entirely possible. But… as for now… We don't think it is."
"We need to keep patrolling through there, then. I'll send Seth and Leah there now. Can one of you go tonight? If Ness goes to school tomorrow, I'll go then. The Cullens left about two hours ago to go hunting, so I don't wanna leave her alone- especially now."
"If they're gone. then don't leave her at all. We don't need her going missing, again, Jake."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah. None of us want her to go missing again. Just stay with her and don't worry about it." he assured.
"Okay… I'll call Edward and tell him- see what he says about her going to school tomorrow."
"Alright. See ya, Jake."
"See ya. Keep me updated, Jared."
"Will do." he replied, and hung up.
Immediately, I dialed Edward's number. He answered on the first ring.
"Jacob? Is everything okay?"
"With Nessie, yes. But Jared just called to say that they ran into a scent they didn't recognize last night on patrol. Said that the scent didn't leave the woods. What's the call, boss?" I joked. This was no joking matter, but I loved how it got under his skin when I called him that.
"She's not going to school tomorrow unless they find who it is."
"Got it. I'm not leaving her side." I vowed.
"Thank you, Jacob."
"Boss, you know you don't have to thank me. Surprisingly enough, your family is my family." I paused, then risked my life for what I said next. "Especially your daughter."
I hung up.
Then, against all better judgement, I laughed.
I don't know how long I stood there, or how loud I was, but I do know that I stopped when Nessie walked in, rubbing her eyes.
"What are you laughing at?" she asked, sleep making her voice raspy.
Still chuckling, I apologized. "Sorry I woke you."
"It's fine. Why were you laughing?" she repeated, humor glinting in her eyes.
"Oh, nothing. I just told Edward-" I cut myself off.
She raised an eyebrow.
You can't tell her what you told him! Yeah, I kinda understood that. I'd already let too much slip up today- things that she was already questioning; she was too much of Bella's kid not to be.
"Something." I amended slowly, pathetically. Her other eyebrow shot up, making me continue. "Something you wouldn't understand."
She nodded, and started walking towards that fridge. "Yeah. There's a lot of things I wouldn't understand." she murmured, pulling out a can of soda.
I watched as she opened the can and took a sip before I replied.
"I'm sorry."
She leaned against the counter. "What do you mean?"
"How I can't explain half the shit I've accidently told you about. How… you can't remember anything about your life before all of this, and that I have the answers to all the questions you have- well, most of them, anyway- but that I can't tell you any of them." I moved away from my spot in front of the sink and over to her, trapping her between my body and the counter. I changed my mind about everything I'd said before. "I'm sorry that I took us two years to find you. I'm sorry that during these last two years you went through unimaginable things. And I'm sorry that I can't take back any of those things, or things I've said to you, or things I'm saying now. But, Nessie, I can't stay away from you anymore. I've tried. I've given you over two years to remember everything. And this past week I've tried to give you space, no matter how much it hurt to do so. You may not remember me but I sure as hell remember you, Renesmee Cullen. I remember every little detail about you. At least I thought I did. Now, I know a total different you. A new you. A you that, no matter how short a time I've known this new you, I love just as much as the you before. And I'm hoping that you won't see me as the crazy, stalker guy who is out to hurt you like everyone else has. Because I won't now, and I never plan to later." I paused to take a breather, not long enough for her to interrupt, though. "So, now, I'm going to stop talking, because I don't want to scare you anymore than what I already have."
I stepped back, giving her room. Her mouth was open, and she was staring at me.
A few moments went by where she said absolutely nothing. Then she wa smiling.
"So… You can tell me all that, but not when my birthday is, or my middle name?"
I chuckled, and stepped forward again, placing my mouth just inches from hers, and looked into her deep, chocolate brown eyes. I sighed. "Let's see… Your birthday is September 10th, and your middle name is Carlie."
"So, I'm Carlie?"
"What?"
"Carlie. Edward mentioned that I reminded him of someone named Carlie who went missing a few years ago. Was it really me?"
I hesitated for a moment before responding. "Yeah… It was."
Her smile brightened. "How old am I?"
Though I was happy with the subject change, it wasn't the subject I wanted. "I can't tell you."
"Why?" she demanded. "How is that a bad question?"
"You won't believe me." I told her quietly.
"Try me."
My phone vibrated on the counter with a text message. It was Alice.
Alice: You can tell her. She won't freak out or anything. Besides, if she's okay with everything else you've told her, it won't matter. Just tell her you know her parents, too.
I rolled my eyes at Nessie. "Fine. You're seven."
Her mouth fell open, but she was quiet for a few seconds. "Seven?"
"Seven." I sighed. "I told you before: you're different. This is just one thing that makes you that way."
Her eyes nearly popped out of her head. "There's more than one?!" she yelled.
I nodded slowly, and screwed my mouth to the side.
She squinted. "How do you know all of these things?"
I squinted back. "Let's just say that I know your parents."
"Parents?" she squeaked. "You knew my parents?"
I nodded. "I know what you're thinking, and it's not true." I told her, seeing the look in her eyes. "They didn't give you up- someone took you. We looked everywhere for you, Nessie. And have been for two years. We never gave up hope that you would come back."
She looked at me for a few minutes. Then, quietly, she asked: "So… Who are they?"
"You'll remember everything soon, I promise. I will get your memory back." I vowed.
And then, she did the one thing that shocked me completely.
She kissed me.
Her hands came up to tangle in my hair and I moved my hands away from the countertop and planted them on her hips, pulling her closer- needing her closer.
She pulled away to look in my eyes, our harsh breathing mixing.
"I need you, Jacob."

I pushed myself back against Jake, my lips meeting his with vigor. I could feel every little part of him- and big.
Jacob gripped my hips and lifted me up onto the counter, where, as soon as I was in place, my legs went around his waist and pulled him in closer than what he already was.
Our tongues played as our hands wandered over the other's body. My hands explored his chest as his roamed over my back, down to my legs, and back up to tangle in my hair.
"Damn, Nessie," he groaned into my mouth. "You are so hot."
I smiled against his lips. "Right back at ya, Mister."
He groaned again and tugged my hips closer to his, if that was at all possible. On their own accord, my hips ground against his.
Jacob hissed. "Fuck, Nessie…Are you positive?"
I was about to answer in the affirmative when Jake's phone started ringing.
"Shit." he cursed into my mouth, and began to pull away.
"No, no, no." I said quickly, and pulled him back to me. "Let it ring."
"It's probably your- Edward." he whispered.
"He can wait." I whispered back, pulling at the bottom of his shirt as the phone stopped ringing. "Off."
He did as I told him, taking off his tight black t-shirt, and throwing it onto the floor.
"Renesmee. Are you sure? We don't have to do this. We can stop right here and go watch another movie or something. It doesn't matter to me. Hell, we could even-"
I silenced him with my lips. "I'm sure."
He made the move to kiss me once more when his phone started ringing again.
We both groaned.
"I have to answer this or he's no gonna stop." he whispered, slowly pulling away from me.
I sighed. "Fine." I unwrapped by legs from around his waist but stayed on the counter.
He chuckled, and picked up his phone. "Yeah?" he answered.
I heard shouting, but that was all I could make out. That and Jake's laughter.
"No promises, Boss." he laughed, and hung up.

I picked up the phone. "Yeah?"
"Get your hands off my daughter!" Edward yelled.
I just chuckled. "No promises, Boss."
