"Emily, are you ready?"
Emily snapped out of her daydream and saw Agent Abbott was waiting at her office door, waiting for a response. Admittedly, she had been thinking of Aaron… Hotch; however assuming he had been too busy to speak recently, she zoned back into the present.
"Yeah sorry, let me just grab my things and we can go."
It was a little before six when she got home and considering her team spent the weekend wrapping up a case, they went out for a few drinks. After three beers, Emily decided to call it a night and was glad to finally get home and relax. It was nevertheless a consolation to get an extra day off her original mini-holiday for working on a Sunday.
As she put set down her possessions, she decided to call Hotch on the off chance he had a spare moment. However, she was cut short with his abrupt manner.
"Hi Em, I'm just driving on my way home from work; do you mind if I called you back later?"
"Hey Aaron, no problem. Just checking in to see how you're doing. Drive safe" she replied.
With a quick apology and 'thank you', the call disconnected.
As she changed into her pyjamas and settled on the sofa, she remembered her last conversation with JJ and the case she and Hotch had previously discussed. It turned out to be more difficult than expected, with the unsub targeting six victims along with two children before being caught. Child victims were tough on the whole team and especially JJ and Hotch who felt emotionally affected, and it was understandable for him to be distant and focused.
A short while later, Emily received a call from Lance, her building's security guard asking her to head down to the reception. Thinking it odd since she hadn't ordered anything in weeks and was up to date with her rent, she grabbed a hoodie and wandered downstairs.
"Hey Lance, what's going on?" Emily inquired at the desk.
"Um, I didn't know what to do with them so I was hoping you could take them off my hands", Lance smiled, gesturing behind her.
Emily turned around and stared in disbelief before a small creature hurtled towards her, calling out her name.
"Emmy!" Emily managed to kneel down as he wrapped his arms around her neck, struggling to fight back the tears that were forming. It was then that she looked up and saw Hotch standing with the suitcases behind her, almost unrecognizable in a leather jacket and jeans.
She pulled Jack in once more before standing up and making her way to Hotch, pausing for a moment before she gently gripped the back of his neck as his arms enclosed her waist. The hug was brief but warm as Jack approached to grasp the side of Hotch's jacket.
"What are you guys doing here?" Emily asked, still in shock as she led them up to the lift.
"Well, a certain Billy from school decided he was going to a safari in South Africa, and since Jack felt the need to follow suit, we decided to kill two birds with one stone and see both you and England" Hotch explained, as Jack smiled shyly at Emily.
"We were at baggage claim when you called and I didn't want the overhead announcements to give it away so I cut the call short- sorry about that."
"It's no problem; I still can't believe you both are here. It's such a wonderful surprise" Emily added as she fondly ruffled Jack's hair.
When they reached her living room, Emily set up some cartoons for Jack to watch while she and Hotch retreated to the kitchen.
"We've booked a hotel about twenty minutes away from here; it was the closest one I could find." Emily began to speak but Hotch cut her off.
"I know you have to work during the week and I wouldn't want to impose, although we'd like you to join us whenever you have time."
"If I had known you were coming I'd have transformed my apartment into a palace for you, but I guess the least I could do is feed you since you've invited me to more than a fair share of dinners. I've already started on this but you're welcome to have a glass… or four" Emily joked as she retrieved a glass and poured Hotch's drink.
"In all honestly, I'd booked the tickets a few days after our phone call. I was giving the profile and realized that so much effort was put into keeping our loved ones safe that sometimes we're more attentive to the criminals than we are to them" Hotch paused as he took a lingering sip of his wine.
"So I told Jack when I got home that we'd give Miss Emmy an even bigger surprise and voila" he emphasized, giving Emily a Hotch smile.
"I wanted to… needed to take Jack away. I don't think I've given him the time he needs in a while."
"Aaron you're a great father. I see the way he looks at you. You're a superhero even though he's content with you just being his dad and doing the little things like playing with him, or taking him on holiday to see his second favourite person" Emily jested, attempting to lighten the situation.
"I guess I have to comply, since you're cooking my meal tonight" Hotch retorted, gaining a light smack on the shoulder from Emily.
"In all seriousness, tomorrow we'll probably be adventuring into the depths of London but if you're free in the evening, we'd love to see you?" Hotch casually asked.
"I'll tell you what, when I'm not at work and provided you don't have any day plans, I'll be your tour guide? What do you say? I may even cook for you again."
"It sounds perfect. However, I'll take you up on the second part if I'm still alive in the morning" Hotch replied, earning him a side body nudge from Emily, which he didn't mind at all.
