Chapter 21: Optimistic (RPOV)
After a night full of story telling, eating pizza, and watching movies, Jake and I crashed on the couch, my back to his chest. It wasn't intentional; one minute we were watching TV and the next… Well. I don't really remember that part considering we were asleep.
Jake told me the stories of my childhood, the stories of my family, the stories of my life, all while never giving me a name to put to the images in which he visualized for me. My mother, was always "your mother," or "your mom." Same thing with my father. The names he did give me, however, were probably people he didn't think I'd ever meet.
I still didn't fully understand why he wasn't giving me their names- why he was still trying to make me guess. These were things I needed to know- things that would change the way I look at my life. I already knew that my parents didn't voluntarily give me up, but that still didn't tell me what had exactly happened, and, according to Jake, they still didn't know. The last story he told me popped into my mind.
Flashback:
"When you went missing, the whole town was in a frenzy. Nobody knew where you were, or what had happened… You just vanished." Jake told me, shaking his head. He wasn't looking at me. Wasn't looking at anything really. He was looking at the floor like he was millions of miles away.
"Was I here when I went missing? At home?"
"No… You weren't. That day, you'd actually came to see me down at the Reservation."
"Really?"
"Yes… You left my place at about ten that night… Then your parents called me at midnight, asking if you had left yet. That was when I knew something was wrong." He paused for a moment before continuing. "I met your family down at the border, which is between Forks and La Push. Once we got there… We found your car. It had crashed into a tree. But, when we went to get you out, you weren't there. Your purse, phone, ID, everything was still in the car- except you."
"What did you do, then?"
"We called Charlie, and once he heard that you were missing, he immediately sent out a missing persons report." He shook his head again. "It took two years, but we finally found you. That's all I could ever ask for."
Silence then flowed between us.
"Why do you think I don't remember anything? Any one?" I asked quietly.
Jacob looked at me with sorrow-filled eyes and shrugged. "I don't know, Nessie. What I do know, though, is that you will remember everything. It may not be today, it may not be tomorrow, but you will. You just have to be optimistic."
"'Optimistic' isn't in my vocabulary. When you live on the streets, it kinda just… Dissipates."
"Hmm…" Jake murmured. "We'll have to change that…" he said, and bent to press his lips to mine.
End Flashback
For some reason, it was that story that left the most questions. Why had I hit the tree? Why, exactly, did the entire town flip out when I went missing? On the other hand, I had questions like: Were my parents really okay with the fact that I could have been with Jake at midnight? Were we a couple then? Is that why I still felt like we had a… connection?
I may have had more questions about what Jake was to me before, than with what happened that awful night, but they both affected me equally. I just didn't know how. But, with Jake and the Cullens by my side, I would find out the answer to that question.
A/N: Short and awful, I know… But, writers' block seemed to be my best friend for this chapter. I wrote this during first period today - it's Computer Literature- so, once I came home I cleaned it up a bit. Sorry if this chapter absolutely sucked! I promise to do better next chapter!
Well, the bell's about to ring, so I gotta go.
Please review!
