Chapter 24: The Beginning of the End (EPOV)

I went back to my former bedroom where Bella was waiting, sitting frozen on the bed I'd gotten for her all those years before. I knew by her expression that she'd heard everything.

"You know… I knew something had happened to her for Carla to be able to bring her back to us… But… Never in a million years would I have imagined that-" she cut herself off.

"I know." I muttered. "I know."

Before I could think to do it, I picked up the lamp from the nightstand and threw it through the glass wall.

(NikolasPOV)

It had been two years since Renesmee lost her memory. Two years where she felt she was alone. Two years that her family searched for her… Not knowing if she was still alive.

Yet they never gave up hope.

They had told me to wait… Wait for their cue to give her memories back…

But I'm done waiting.

She'll know everything. Now.

You know how when something bad is about to happen, you can feel it in your gut? The muscles in your stomach tighten and you dread doing anything that requires effort? That's how I felt when I woke up the next morning. It was a feeling I knew feeling by heart. I'd had a lifetime of that feeling chasing me around. Well. I guess not exactly a lifetime, more like two years, but those two years was all I remembered. It might've well been a lifetime.

I sat up slowly, looking around my room. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Shoes were in the same placed I left them, the book I'd been reading sat on my dresser. Nothing was different. Except it was. This feeling was something that I'd based my life on. Every time something bad was about to happen, to me or someone else, I got this exact feeling… And it didn't go away until something had, in fact, happen. I knew to trust this certain feeling.

I got off the bed slowly, and made my way downstairs. The smell of pancakes rose from the kitchen, and I could hear Emmett and Jake's laughter. I walked into the kitchen, and froze.

"Umm… What happened here?" I asked slowly, taking in the pancake batter all over everyone and everything that was in the kitchen. Jake and Emmett were covered head to toe in the white goo, and the rest of the family had it all in their hair. The walls were encrusted with the stuff, white droplets everywhere.

"Alice doesn't know how to cook." Edward said simply.

"Then why is she the only one not completely covered in pancake mix?"

"She's got mad skills." Jacob answered seriously.

"Superpowers." Emmett tacked on.

I nodded slowly, trying to hide a smile. "And… What are these superpowers called?"

"Alice." they both answered.

My eyebrows merged. "That doesn't make any sense."

"See? That's Alice's superpower. She doesn't make any sense." Emmett replied, his eyebrows raised.

I bit my lower lip and nodded, the confused look still on my face. I walked around the island to pour a glass of orange juice. "Okay. If that's what you say… Who am I to argue?"

Emmett looked at me, then away, then back, like he was thinking about it. "Nobody."

I chuckled. "Exactly." I brought the glass to my lips.

"Renesmee, there are some pancakes that didn't make it on the wall if you want some." Esme told me.

I smiled at her. "Okay. Thanks. Maybe later, though."

She smiled back and nodded. "Okay. As long as you eat." she warned.

"Promise," I grinned.

She nodded once and walked out of the room, patting my shoulder as she passed. Everyone but Bella and Esme walked out of the kitchen to clean up.

"So..." I began. "What's on the agenda for today?"

"I think we're all going to stay home today. See what Jake is up to. He might have plans." Bella replied.

"Who might have plans?" Jake said, coming back into the room with clean clothes on.

"You. What are you doing today?" I asked.

"Seth mentioned something about going to First Beach. You wanna go again? We can stop and see Billy, too."

"Sure. Sounds fun."

"Okay… Go get ready, we'll go grab something to eat before heading over there."

"But… we have pancakes here." I replied, more than a little confused.

"Yeah, but Alice made them. They're probably not edible." Jake joked.

"I heard that!" Alice yelled.

"You were supposed to!" he yelled back.

Esme laughed. "Okay, okay. Stop bickering, you two."

"Sure, sure." Jake murmured. He looked up at me. "Just come down and find me whenever you're ready."

"Got it. Give me fifteen minutes."

He nodded, grinned, came over to me, and kissed my temple. "'Kay."

I walked upstairs and changed into some black shorts and an old sleep shirt. I pulled my messy, out of control hair up with a ponytail holder (A/N: elastic, for those of you who call it differently) and started the search for shoes.

A knock at the door interrupted me.

"Come in," I called.

"It's me." Alice stated, standing in the threshold of my door. "I thought you may need some shoes." She held up a pair of black flip flops. "These work?"

I smiled. "They're perfect. Thank you."

"No problem, Nessie." she smiled back. "Have a good time."

I smiled again and grabbed my phone off the bedside table. I slid on the shoes and walked back downstairs where Emmett, Rose, Alice and Jasper were watching TV.

"Do you guys know where Jake is?" I asked.

Jasper answered. "He's talking to Edward and Bella outside. They're waiting for you."

"All right. Thank you." I waved and exited the home.

Edward was handing a pair of keys to Jake, only he kept jerking them back when Jake would reach for them. Jacob rolled his eyes.

"Call me or Bella when you get to the beach." Edward told Jacob.

"I will."

"I'm trusting you, Jacob." Edward said.

"I know, Boss. You can trust me. Your precious car will be fine."

"I'm not talking about the car."

We had just eaten at the diner, picked something up for Billy, and were on our way when Seth called.

"Okay. No, I understand. Bye, Seth." Jacob hung up.

"What was that about?"

"Seth can't make it to the beach. Said that Sam wanted him to do something. He'll come by the Cullens' place later, though."

"Are we still going?"

"Yeah. Can't let Seth ruin the fun, can we?" He grinned.

I laughed. "Nope. Can't have that."

"We'll go drop this food off at Billy's first, then we'll head to the beach. That sound good?"

I looked over at him and smiled. "Sounds fantastic."

Jacob gripped my hand and kissed each of my fingers. "Good,"

What happened next was too fast to comprehend. We were headed around a curve that was in the middle of a mountain and the ocean. I could see the place where we went cliff diving just yesterday. One second we were holding hands, the next we were through the guardrail that separated the road from the ocean, and in midair. I don't remember screaming, but it was entirely possible I had. Jake had tried saving us from going into the water, tried to cut the wheel back to continue on the road, but it didn't work. He gripped by hand for all it was worth.

The last thing I heard was: "I love you, Renesmee."

The impact of the car hitting the ocean was… Indescribable. All I felt was pain. My first instinct was to take a breath, but it was impossible. I held my breath as we fell into the icy water. Jacob let go of my hand after giving it one last squeeze. He unbuckled himself and then me. He turned in his body to face the door, tried to push it open, and when that didn't work, he tried kicking it. He kept kicking while I tried pushing through the window. My lungs yearned for the air they could not have. I tried harder to break through the window, my attempts becoming desperate. Jake's did too.

After what seemed like hours, my eyes drifted close.

Carlisle had just been called out for an emergency at the hospital, so the rest of the family was watching the football game against the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals. The Seahawks were up by ten when we got the call.

Esme's phone started ringing.

"Who is it?" Bella asked.

"Carlisle," Esme answered, wondering why he was calling her. She answered anyway, putting it on speaker. "Hello?"

"Esme, darling, can you put me on speakerphone?" Carlisle sounded tired.

"You already are. What's wrong, Carlisle?"

"The emergency I was called in for… Wasn't a traditional car accident like I'd thought. The car went into the ocean at First Beach. The couple came in unconscious… Both were in cardiac arrest and have severe hypothermia. "

I started to panic. I turned to Bella, who stared at me with wide eyes. "Has Jacob called you?"

She shook her head slowly. "You?"

"No. Carlisle, please tell me that it's not Renesmee and Jacob." Please… Not my little girl… Please… No.

"I can't do that, Edward." Carlisle said brokenly. "I think you all need to come to the hospital."

When we got to the hospital, Carlisle was waiting on us. I'd never seen Carlisle so… human. He looked tired, broken… Something must've happened with Jacob and Re-

No. Stop. Nothing bad has happened since Carlisle called you. They are both fine.

"Where are they?" I demanded.

"Follow me."

We got in the elevator, and Carlisle pressed "five". "She's okay for now. Like I said on the phone, it was touch-and-go whenever they first arrived... They had been in the water a long time…"

"What happened, Carlisle?" Bella asked, gripping my arm.

"Jacob's awake now… He woke up a few minutes ago. He said that he was just driving down the road and lost control of the car. He tried to cut the wheel back to get back on the road, but it didn't work, and they went into the water. They couldn't get out of the car for a while, and by the time they did, Renesmee was already unconscious. Jacob made it to the shore before he fell unconscious, too. He's got a warm IV bag, but he hasn't left Renesmee's side. She's still… Asleep." Carlisle said quickly, at a speed that no human would be able to understand.

"How bad off is she?" I asked.

"She, uh… Like I said before, she had hypothermia and no heartbeat when she came in. Renesmee's still not breathing on her own, which means… She's on life support now, and technically in a coma. It's not medically induced, so she must've fell into it afterwards… After she passed out or after we brought her back. We've warmed her up to an okay temperature. Well… Normal for a human. I'm still warming her up, since what her normal temperature is isn't normal according what the other doctors were taught."

The elevator dinged as we reached the fifth floor.

Carlisle stopped us outside the door. "Just… Be prepared."

When we stepped into the room, I was angry at Carlisle for not picturing any of this in his mind, but Bella's dry sob leached that anger out of me. I numbly pulled her into my side. The Renesmee lying on the bed wasn't a Renesmee I'd ever want to see again. This Renesmee had her eyes closed, a tube in her mouth, an IV in one arm, a pulse clamp on the other, and heating blankets surrounding her. Her curly, blondish-bronze hair was spread around her head like a halo. There were five stitches right above her left eye, my guess was she hit her head after Jacob lost control of the car.

Speaking of…

Jacob sat next to Renesmee, holding her small, limp, pale hand in both of his, every now and this pressing little kisses to anything his lips could touch. His eyes broke from Nessie's sleeping form for a split second to cut over to me. His mind began to replay what happened. I could feel how he lost control of the car out of nowhere. I could see the horror on Nessie's face. I could hear Jacob's thoughts of trying to get her to safety after they were in the water.

"It's not your fault, Jacob. You know that." I told him quietly. Slowly walking towards him.

"I've gone over it a million times in my head… Trying to figure out what I could've done differently to keep from going in the water… But I can't name one thing… So, I know it's not my fault, but I still can't help of seeing her lifeless body… No light in her eyes… Nothing."

"You got her out of there. It could've been way worse than what it was." Emmett tried to reason with him.

"I didn't get her out of there sooner. If I had… Her heart wouldn't have stopped. She wouldn't be on life support right now." He shook his head.

"Stop. Stop thinking like that." I told him, taking another step closer. "Jacob, you did everything you could've done. You did nothing wrong. All we can do now is wait."

"Nothing can happen to her, right?" Jacob asked, his voice breaking.

"The fact that you're okay, Jacob, means it could've been much worse than what it was." Carlisle answered. "Your bond with her is so strong… If she wasn't… going to be alright, I doubt you would be awake. You would be in the same shape she is."

Jacob nodded slowly, and rubbed Renesmee's arm gently. "Okay. Okay…"
