Chapter 25: Even My Story had a Happy Ending (CarlislePOV)
FLASHBACK:
A single 911 page was enough to get any doctor back into the hospital. Two would make that trip to the hospital faster. But three… You knew whatever it was, it was bad.
I'd been a surgeon for years, overlooking the fact that I was part of a bloodthirsty species, doing the exact opposite of what I was made to do: saving people. Still, even with hundreds of years of practice, of saving people, nothing prepared me for the emergency that awaited me.
Edward and Esme were both dying in the hospital when I'd found them, so seeing family members in the hospital wasn't new for me. However, seeing the granddaughter who didn't remember me as her grandfather and her best friend- another son to me- in my Emergency Room, both unconscious, one with no heartbeat, made me pause.
Renesmee's previously pale skin was now tinted with blue. She was intubated and one of the nurses was doing chest compressions.
"Get me a crash cart!"
"Oh, Dr. Cullen, you're here. We've got two car crash victims, male and female. Male is Jacob Black, age twenty, and Jane Doe-" Nurse Mandy started.
"Renesmee Cullen." I interrupted.
"Sorry, sir?"
"She's not a Jane Doe. Her name's Renesmee Cullen, Edward and Bella's adopted daughter."
"Oh. Then maybe you can help us with her history, since family isn't allowed to work on each other, and I'll page Dr. Gerandy."
"I can still he-"
"Dr. Cullen." Mandy interrupted me with sympathy in her eyes, saying everything that needed to be said.
I sighed. "I know… I know."
"I know you want to help. But the only way you can do that is giving their medical history. Please?"
"I'll help in any way I can, Mandy." I vowed, and lead me to the waiting room where she proceeded to ask me basic questions about Nessie and Jacob. It wasn't until she got to one question that I didn't know the answer.
"I know this question doesn't apply to Mr. Black, but is there any chance Miss Cullen is pregnant?"
My immediate reaction was to say 'no,' but after hearing Nessie and Edward's conversation last night, I had no idea.
"I… don't know." I answered slowly.
She nodded. "Okay." She turned around and spoke to another nurse, Nurse Hope. "Get a blood sample from Miss Cullen. Run it for the pregnancy hormone and get it back to me ASAP."
Hope nodded. "Got it."
Mandy turned back to me. "I'm going to go back in there; that was the last question. Umm… Why don't you call your family? They should be here."
I nodded in answer.
"Okay. Stay here. As soon as the results come in, I'll come tell you." she replied.
"Thank you, Mandy."
"Not a problem, Dr. Cullen."
Then she walked away.
"Dr. Cullen?"
After calling the family and making sure they were on their way, I waited to hear from Mandy. It had only been about twenty minutes, but when you were on the receiving end of the results, it felt like forever.
I stood up as Mandy approached.
"I have the results. They're negative. She's not pregnant."
I sat down slowly, and breathed a sigh of relief.

It had been a long night. Renesmee remained stable, though not awake. Jacob remained by her side, and visitors remained constant. Never was my daughter's hospital room empty. Carlisle still worked, and was constantly checking her vitals, running tests, making sure she was okay.
Carlisle was convinced she'd wake up soon, and remember everything. Why he thought the second part, I'll never know. But I hoped. I hoped that he was right. That my little girl would wake up in any minute and remember everything she'd forgotten. Edward stood behind me, gripping the hand that rested on my shoulder. We hadn't moved much since we first got here, just rotated around the bed that held our daughter.
"She's going to wake up soon, right? She has to, right?" I asked, quietly.
Edward rubbed my shoulder, but wasn't the one to answer.
"She will. Tomorrow."
Jacob's head snapped up and Edward and I turned to face the man standing in the doorway. He was tall, well, taller than me, standing about Edward's height. He had blondish-brown hair, brilliant green eyes, and too tan to be from around here. He wore a plain grey t-shirt with a pair of dark-wash jeans, and black leather jacket in his hand. He almost reminded me of Jake when he was sixteen.
"Who are you and how do you know that?" Edward asked.
The guy came into the room. "Nikolas de Luca, sir. I go to school with Ren."
"Oh, so you're the Nik she talks about."
Nikolas grinned. "I'm guessing so."
"Nikolas, forgive our manners… I'm Bella, Renesmee's… foster sister-in-law. This is my husband, Edward, and the man across from me is our friend Jacob. Nice to meet you."
Nikolas chuckled under his breath. "Mrs. Cullen, you can stop with the formalities. I know that you're really Renesmee's parents. And Jacob's her imprint."
I froze. So did Edward and Jacob.
"I also know that you and your husband, plus your family, are vampires. Well. Minus Ren, there. She's half human. Jacob is a shape-shifter."
"How do you know all of that? You're only-" Jake began to growl.
"Human?" Nikolas laughed again. "Hardly. I'm a vampire, too. My power is to mask my scent and vampire abilities. Red- or gold- eyes, included. Not to mention that I can make people forget things, too."
Next thing I knew, Edward had the vampire up against the wall. I ran to close the door and went to the snarling vampires.
"You did this to her!" Edward snarled.
"I did, but not by choice. If you ask the Volturi, it was out of necessity. I didn't see any danger from her then, and still don't. I decided to go against their orders and give her back her memory. Sounds like she needed to remember the good things in her life. Not have a memory full of hurt. Unfortunately, the only way to get her memory back is to make the situation in which she lost her memory to recur. In Renesmee's case, after she lost her memory, she crashed a car." Nikolas explained, unfazed.
"You worked for the Volturi?" I asked harshly.
"I knew they had something to do with this!" Jake growled.
"When do they not do something to hurt another coven?" Nikolas asked seriously. "And to answer your question, Bella, I used to. The only reason I did this in the first place is because they have my mate." I could see the pain in his eyes as he mentioned her.
Edward cocked his head. "Who's your mate?"
Nikolas looked my husband right in the eye before answering. "Alexa."
Breathing stopped. We all stood frozen. Edward was so shocked that he dropped Nikolas, though he landed on his feet.
"They have Alexa?" Edward gasped out.
Nikolas nodded grimly. "They took her after we told them we wouldn't do anything to hurt your family. She couldn't do anything, so it was up to me. They took her while we were out hunting… Felix told me that she would be let go if I took Renesmee's memory and masked the vampire genes."
"I'm guessing they haven't?" Jake whispered.
Nikolas shook his head. "No. It's been two years since I last saw her." He looked at Edward. "You left Bella for six months. Imagine two years worth of that pain."
"How do you know she's not-" Jake couldn't bring himself to say it.
"They call sometimes, and put her on the phone. She's never alone though. Felix, Demetri, or Alec is always with her. Once, Jane was." We all shuddered. "Anyway, I'm tired of destroying your family. I'll get Alexa back, soon, someway. For right now, though, Ren deserves to be happy. Since, technically, she's my niece," he cracked a grin, "that's all I want for her. So, she'll wake up tomorrow, and remember everything. Maybe not all at first, but… by five o'clock definitely."
"Thank you, Nikolas. And if you think for one second that you're going to get Lexie back by yourself, you're crazy. We'll all help. We all love Lexie, too." I assured him.
"I'll see if some of the packs will, too. Seth and Leah liked Lexie." Jake mused.
"As soon as Renesmee wakes up, we'll start planning. Until then, why don't you stay here? I'll call everyone else, and you can explain all of this to them." Edward told him.
Nikolas nodded. "Sure."
Edward hesitated before putting his hand on Nik's shoulder. "Thank you, brother."
Nik smiled ruefully, and shook his head. "I didn't think she was serious. She talked about you all the time. You, most of all, Edward. But I always thought she exaggerated by how accepting you are."
Edward laughed. "She wasn't. We're not really a coven… We're a family." He shook his head. "I knew she had a mate, but she never did tell me a name. It's nice to finally meet you, Nikolas."
Nik nodded. "She told me. With the circumstances, I understood. She didn't, though."
"I understand… I tried getting a hold of her a few months ago… Multiple times, but she never answered. I figured she was still mad."
"She's been over it for a while now. We were actually getting ready to come here when they took her."
"We will get her back." Edward vowed. "First they threaten my family… Then they take my sister... They're going to pay."
"That's been my promise since I realized how evil they are." Nik said.
I looked around the room. "You're not the only one. We're all tired of the Volturi treating us like we're nothing. They can't hurt us anymore."
After Nik had explained everything to the rest of the family and some of the pack, all we had left to do was come up with a strategy to get Alexa back, and wait for Nessie to wake, which, according to Nik, was anytime now.
Renesmee's room was full of vampires, werewolves, and three human. Carlisle had taken the day off to help strategize and wait on Ness to wake up. Esme and Alice had brought some essentials for her: clothes, shampoo, a toothbrush, things of that nature. Nik had assured us that she would know everything soon after she woke up, but we were trying not to get our hopes up.
By ten, Nessie still hadn't woken up. Mindless chatter filled the room as we waited.
Another hour passed, and still nothing had changed.
At noon, still nothing.
As we approached Nik's deadline, we became more agitated, unable to sit still.
Two o'clock rolled by…
Three.
Edward and I grasped her hand while Jacob rubbed her feet. We were surrounded by family and friends, people who loved Renesmee and she loved back. There was nothing that made me happier than seeing the people who mattered most to my family.
That was when it happened.
The movement in my hand surprised me at first. It was a subtle change, a flicker of a finger, but it was enough to know that my sleeping beauty was waking up.
"Oh my God." I whispered.
"What, love?" Edward asked, concerned.
"She just moved her hand. She's waking up." I turned to look at my daughter's face, moving my hands to stroke her cheek. "Renesmee, honey? It's me- Mo-" I paused. "Bella… Can you open your eyes for me, sweetie? Please?"
Her eyebrows creased, but she didn't open her eyes.
"She's moving her feet now," Jake informed me.
"Her other arm, too."
That's when she opened her eyes.
***(RPOV)
There was a bright light.
That was all I registered. Normally, you see those movies where the main character dies, and, suddenly, there's a bright light that seems so alluring… So soothing… Peaceful, even. I'd always wondered what I'd do if I ever saw that light… Ya know, the alluring, soothing, peaceful light. My first instinct was to say that I'd go into it without question. I mean, God knows anything would be better than the life I'd been living- staying in a trash dump, sleeping on some old mattress somebody threw out, eating food out of a trash can… It's definitely not the way a teenager wants to live.
Every time I wondered about "The Light," that was the thing I'd always imagined.
I never thought I'd have something to live for.
A family to live for.
But that was before.
Before I knew everything.
All the moments with Jacob, giving me the ring, him as a wolf, us hunting together. Aunt Rose brushing gently through my messy bronze curls, Grandma Esme making Jake and I food… Fights with Aunt Alice about what to wear on shopping trips to Seattle… Momma and Daddy, tucking me in at night, reading me stories, helping me with my math and different languages… That was the family I knew. The family I loved.
I'd expected to see Mom, Dad, Jake, and the rest of the Cullens at my bedside, even though I didn't really remember what happened or where I was. Grandpa Charlie, the rest of the La Push pack, and Nik? Not so much.
"Renesmee? Breathe through your nose, okay? I'm going to take the tube out of your mouth, do you understand?" Grandpa Carlisle told me. "Blink once for yes, twice for no."
I blinked once.
He smiled. "Good. When I tell you to cough, cough, please." He came around to stand behind my head and grasped the tube. "Cough," he said, and I obeyed. Grandpa pulled the tube out, and air hit my lungs. "Don't try to talk just yet, okay? Let your throat rest. You've been intubated for two days."
I nodded and swallowed thickly.
"Are you thirsty?" Bella asked.
I nodded warily, slowly.
She turned to the table behind her. There were plastic cups, straws, and a large plastic container filled to the brim with water. She poured a cup full and placed a straw into it. She began walking towards me, her hands angling the straw towards my mouth. "Here you go."
I shook my head weakly, looking her in the eye. "Not that kind of thirsty." I whispered.
She froze. As did everyone in the room.
"Hi, Momma."
A/N: Don't hate me. I wanted to end it with a surprise, though I don't really think it was a surprise at all, haha. A huge thank you to Dawn who planted this ending in my mind to the point I couldn't shake it! Most of this story wouldn't have happened without you giving me ideas when I was stuck and making sure I posted chapters! Love you!
Another thank you to ALL my readers! Even the ones who didn't review because I don't normally review either, and it'd make me a hypocrite for making you review. This story wouldn't do as good as it has without you reading it! So thank you!
I'm hoping to have the first chapter of Alexa up before Tuesday, because that's when I go back to school, so keep a look out for that.
For those of you who didn't particularly like the ending, read Alexa because eventually, that story will tie into this one, if you didn't already figure it out.
Again, thank you so much for everything you've done!
Laters,
~Em
