He stand still and silent through the trial, his face carefully schooled into a neutral expression. Even though he believes Ninon was wrong to conceal the girls in her house, the accusations that the Cardinal is throwing at her are nonsense.
Witchcraft and spells; what next? Hobgoblins and demons? He wouldn't put it past the Cardinal, or the lunatic from Rome.
The young girl, Fleur is called to testify, the Cardinal does is best to act kindly; giving her water to drink and coaxing her gently. Fleur haltingly tells them about the education she has received from Ninon. The Cardinal leaps on her words, twisting them and tying the poor child in knots. Eventually he is done with her and the guards take her to escort her out. They are too rough with her, this child after all has done nothing wrong other than perhaps irritate her Father and the Cardinal.
There are worse crimes in the world.
He shoots a stony glare at the guards and gently guides the girl back through the gate and ushers her through the crowd of people, hearing the Cardinal call fro his next witness; Madame le Chappelle. As Fleur walks off he hears a voice that makes his blood run cold.
It can't be
He hears her voice, the same voice that echoes through his dreams every night. He pushes his way through the crowd, hearing her weave a tale that is shocking and twisted. Ninon replies, shock and hurt in her voice.
"THIS WOMAN IS A LIAR" The words are out of him before he can control himself and he surges forward with every intention of breaking her neck with his bare hands, court be damned. Porthos, Aramis and Treville restrain him and she turns, a delicate look of shock on her face. This only serves to anger him further and he struggles against them, shouting and raging. He only regains his control when Treville places a firm hand on his chest, the command in the Captain's voice calm cannot be ignored and the soldier in him regains control.
She walks past as she leaves the court and looks at him, the cruel mockery in her eyes reserved just for him.
Let me loose; I'll kill her.
Eventually she is gone and they let him loose, watching him as though he were a wild animal.
Your cruelty knows no bounds. One day I will finish the job I started and end you.
