Hey guys,
I'm really sorry for not uploading this. Honestly it's just been sitting on my computer waiting to be uploaded. But school has started and they are just loading the homework onto us. So be patient with me.
I know the last chapter was pretty boring since it was mainly dialogue, but this one has a bit of action in it.
Well, read it. Leave reviews. Tell me what you think! Thanks!
Riley's POV
I hadn't been able to fall asleep. I tossed and turned and I couldn't get comfortable. It was too cold… too lonely. I sat, staring into the dark until early morning came. As I laid there, I heard something. It was the sound of a bag being zipped up. (When you spend so much time being alert, you develop an incredible sense of hearing) It was coming from Carl's room.
I jumped out of bed and knocked on his door before I walked in.
"Hey." I said.
"Hey." He said not turning to face me.
"What are you doing?" I asked as he stood up and slung the backpack over a shoulder.
"Some of us are going on a supply run."
Wait. A supply run. That means I could get my bag. I needed that bag.
"Wait─" I put my hand on Carl's chest to stop him from going out the door.
"Riley," he said looking forward and not at me. "I know what you're going to say, but no. It's too dangerous."
"Too dangerous? Too dangerous?"
"Yes." He snapped and looked straight into my eyes. "Too dangerous." Those eyes melted my heart a little bit.
"Please" I begged.
"Riley, we're not even going in the direction of where your bag is. This run is just for ammo." I didn't argue. There was no way I was going to get what I wanted. "I'm sorry." He said softly.
"No, it's fine." I said and turned to back to my cell.
It's too dangerous. He had said and suddenly I was worried.
I turned back around and ran at him. I threw my arms around his neck and buried my face in the crook of his neck as his arms wrapped around me.
"Don't do anything stupid, like saving some damsel in distress. Got it?"
I felt him give a light laugh. "Got it."
"And…please come back." I said.
"I always do." He said and I let go of him, and he let go of me. "I'll be back later today, okay?"
"Yeah, okay."
I shouldn't have let go of him because he didn't come back later that day.
Carl's POV
The supply run list was short and sweet. Bullets, that's all we needed. There were only a few of us who went. Me, Max, and Glenn. Daryl usually would've come, but he and Michonne had to venture out a little further to get actual supplies like food.
We had found this old hunting shop a while back and had almost cleared it out, but we never take everything all at once. My Dad says that if we ever need to make a run for it, then we have someplace to go if we need supplies. So in the cabinet beneath the register boxes of bullets were stored. Eighty or so boxes. We took sixty of them.
After we had put the ammunition in the car and grabbed whatever else we thought would be useful, we sat down to eat lunch. We had a three hour drive back, and it was early. We weren't worried, and we hadn't seen a walker since we arrived.
"So…" Max said as he swallowed a bite of his sandwich, "What's going on between you and that Riley girl."
"Yeah, I've been wondering that same thing." Glenn said.
Both of them had on that smile that let you know they were trying not to laugh at you.
I, on the other hand, was trying not to blush or smile or do anything that would let them tease me.
"I don't know what you guys are talking about." I said and took another bite of my sandwich. It was already hard enough to think about Riley, and now we had to talk about her. The whole time, all I did was have an internal debate on whether or not I should go get her bag. I know where it is, and I've seen my dad drive enough cars, I bet I could do it, but then something told me not to.
"Awww, look at him." Max said. "He's blushing."
"Am not." I snapped.
"You totally are."
"No."
"Yes."
"No.
"YES!"
"Guys!" Glenn said trying not to laugh. "Would you two stop being so immature?" Then he waited a moment before he spoke again. "And, Carl, you're totally blushing."
"That's it." I said. "I'm leaving."
"Oh come on, Carl." Max said.
"Leave him, he probably just needs to take a piss or something."
Riley's POV
I'll be back later today, okay?
I heard those words myself, yet I worried and worried and worried. I've heard those exact words leave so many peoples' lips, and so many of them never came back.
I couldn't sit down. I couldn't even focus on reading Pride and Prejudice. I looked for things to keep myself occupied. I helped to fill water barrels. I helped with dishes and lunch. I even helped with Judith, with the help of Chaco.
I've never really babysat, and I didn't know how to either. Judith was going about her room showing me toys and everything she had, she didn't really make any sense the majority of the time, so I just nodded and said "Wow." In a really excited voice.
But who knew Chaco loved kids so much. She came in and Judith started to clap with delight. Chaco then gave her a big sloppy wet kiss on her cheek making her laugh and me smile. Then she just settled down next to Judith and became Judith's new toy.
I was sure Chaco was going to give in at any second. I've never heard of a dog who sits there, looking happy, while a child pulls on their ears and tail and climbs all over them. Everything was going great. I was finally starting to relax when Beth came and took over Judith Duty.
And then I heard the gates open.
