It was eight-thirty. The party was about to start. Lily felt nervous. She was starting to think that she might have feelings for James. She was really confused around him and didn't really know what to say. She had picked out her best muggle clothes she could find. She curled her hair and put on mascara. Lily never needed much makeup. While the other girls talked and primped each other, Lily sat out of the loop. She wondered what might happen. Would they kiss? Would they not even talk at all? Soon enough, the girls were pulling Lily off her bed and down the stairs.
The boys were waiting in the common room. Sirius and James were deep into conversation,
"I'm telling you man, she likes you this year. You stopped being an asshole and I think she likes it," Sirius said.
"Are you sure? She might just be doing it because she was exhausted from being mad at me. What if she just feels nothing towards me?"
"I don't really know dude. But I gotta go," he said, jumping up to go greet Marlene Mckinnon with a long kiss. James just rolled his eyes. Lily stood behind Marlene searching for James. He spotted her and walked over.
"Hey doe," he smiled, "Want to come hang out with us?" Gesturing over to Remus and Peter. He didn't want her to think that he was trying to corner her. She nodded and walked over,
"Hey Remus," she smiled, sitting down on a plush red couch.
"Hey Lily," Remus nodded, already studying for classes. No matter what you could never get that boy's head out of a book. James was looking at her,
"Um.. You look really nice Lily," he said.
"Oh thanks," she smiled, "It's nothing really. Just the kind of stuff I wear at home," she shrugged.
"Well, it looks really nice," he nodded.
Sirius, at this point, came busting in with a bottle of booze, "Alright you guys let's get the party started!" he yelled, handing the bottle over.
James laughed and took a swig of it. He passed it off to Lily. Remus passed it on, not approving of a party the night before classes started. Marlene appeared to already be quite drunk.
"Come on Lily!" she yelled, "I love this song!" Lily looked at James and got up to go dance with Marlene. James sat staring at Lily. She was like a goddess. He was surprised that people hadn't started wars over her beauty. He took another drink and stood up, bottle in hand. After the song had ended, he approached Lily.
"Do you want to get out of here?" he whispered in her ear. She looked into his eyes, smiled and shrugged her shoulders.
"Wait here," he smiled, before dashing up to the boys dormitory. He grabbed the invisibility cloak and some jackets and came back downstairs. He grabbed her by the hand and pulled her out of the common room.
Outside, their ears rang from the loud music inside. "Okay," he smiled. "Now, this is something my dad gave me. It makes you completely invisible. This way, the teachers won't see us. We have to be kind of close though," he paused, "I swear this wasn't planned," he laughed.
She only smiled, "It's okay James. Just show me how it works." He stood in front of her and threw the cloak around them, being sure it covered their feet.
"Just follow me," he said, beginning to walk forward. She grabbed his hand in order to keep close. His heart jumped a few beats. He hoped his hand wouldn't start sweating and gross her out.
"Um, we're just gonna go outside, okay?" he whispered, heading towards the front door. She nodded her head, not saying anything back. He opened the door as quietly as he could and closed it the same way. He took the cloak off and folded it down.
"I brought you a jacket in case you got cold," he said, gesturing for her to take it.
"Thanks," she said, grabbing it from his arm, "So, where did you plan on going?" she shrugged.
He smiled, "Follow me." he took her hand and walked off onto the grounds.
"You better not be trying to murder me or something," she laughed.
"I promise, it's not that."
"How could I know that? What if this whole time you were pretending to like me and you were just plotting to murder me the second I gave in!"
"Oh no you've caught me," he sighed.
"I knew it!" she laughed. He started to pull her faster, he was so excited to be alone with her and for her to talk to him and like him.
"There's this place kinda far over there. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. You're gonna love it," he said, turning and looking back at her.
"How did you find it?" she asked, starting to lose stamina. He wasn't kidding when he said 'kinda far'.
"I spend a lot of time alone, though it may not look like it," he smiled, "We're almost there!"
They came just over a hill and there it was, a beautiful, huge lake. It was twenty times more beautiful than the Black Lake. A great smile crept across her face, "Wow...you weren't kidding."
He smiled down at her, "Come on, let's get closer." He pulled her nearly towards the edge of the lake and sat down, taking it all in. She sat down cross-legged next to him.
"James?" she asked.
"Hm?"
"Why do you like me so much? I mean...why me?" she shrugged.
He thought about it for a minute, "I don't know. Why does anyone like anyone?"
She nodded and looked over the lake, "Yeah...but isn't it just curious?"
"What do you mean?" he frowned.
"I mean it's curious that you like me."
"I don't know. I guess when you think about it, it isn't that curious at all," he replied simply.
"Why are you so different?" she smiled, turning to face him.
"It got kind of boring just seeing you mad at me all the time, I guess," he shrugged.
"You know, I bet half the girls at this school would kill to be in the position I'm in right now."
"Yeah, you better be careful. They might actually kill you," he laughed.
She smiled and stared at him. He was truly turning into a man. His every feature showed it, he was no longer a boy.
"James.." she said quietly, almost no noise came from her mouth. He turned to look at her and she kissed him. She grabbed at his shirt and he ran his hand through her hair. This very moment was the moment he'd been waiting for for years. It was better than he ever could have imagined.
