Disclaimer: I do not own DN Angel, welcome to the wonderful world of Fan Fiction!

Author's Note: I hope you enjoy this chapter. I looked up LGBT rights in Japan and what I got was that in some areas people could not be fired for their sexual orientation but that they could still get flack for it. I don't know what the rules are for the area that Sato and Dai are in, I could not find that. So we'll assume they are in a cool-ish area.

Warning: This story will be a range of anywhere between two affectionate male friends to yaoi (Explicit sex between two males). So if you don't like male that cry and hug and enjoy cuddle than I suggest you do not read this fic. In this story the fate of Hikari and Niwa is a grand secret of mine. Although I believe if you are one to enjoy affectionate male friends or full blown out yaoi regardless I believe you will enjoy this story.

Happy Reading!

The Art of Our Blood

Chaputa-juu

Journals of Hiwatari, Satoshi

In some ways I feel tired and old. In others I feel young and revitalised. I have lived with Niwa, Daisuke for little over two years now and I have accomplished a lot. There will be a formal party tonight, mostly for public relations and all I am a young police commander and I have just finished my Doctoral Thesis. This will cement my position in the Police Department and the Community. However, I do not know if I will live long enough to see the day that I am no longer heckled. Even though, we are together I am unsure if my love is returned and as I am unsure I am still very sick. This has firmed the decision in my mind to invite Daisuke to the ball as my date and not just a friend. Although I can no longer get fired from my job for my sexual orientation, there could still be some public backlash. But I will not live long enough to care, and Daisuke will be able to fade from the spotlight once I am gone.

Hiwatari, Satoshi was already dressed for the black tie affair that he was to attend in celebration of himself, his achievements and really just to make the police and the University look good. He stood by the door his collar loosened but he still looked good, waiting for Daisuke to return. There were still a couple hours before they were expected, but Satoshi wanted to look his best for this surprise.

He had timed it all perfectly standing there by the door just out of sight with a bound copy of his masters and doctoral theses; it was only a few moments before he heard the key in the lock. Satoshi took a deep breath in and held it as Daisuke opened the door stepped through while simultaneously kicking of his shoes and saying, "Tadaima."

Satoshi stepped into view, "Welcome home."

Daisuke jumped bit startled by the sudden appearance of his boyfriend and in his fright dropped his keys and half tripped over his feet. "Geez, Satoshi! Don't scare me like that," then red eyes took in the other's appearance the clean pressed suit with black tie and the uncertain smile, "What is going on? I'm feeling more underdressed than normal," the blunette chuckles and holds out a book. Daisuke takes it his eyes going wide, without even reading the cover he says, "Is this your Master Thesis? You finished it that is great!"

The police commander chuckles again and holds up another book-like bound document. "No, this is my Master Thesis what you are holding is my Doctoral Thesis."

"Your doctoral…" replied Daisuke in shock, Satoshi nodded, and Daisuke shook his head and laughed, "I don't even want to know how you did that, or why you did it so fast." There is a bitter and sad smile on the dying youth's face for but a moment as the Redhead stares in awe at the Thesis in his hands. Before Daisuke sees the sadness and before Satoshi buries it away the icy youth has an armful of his fiery counterpart.

The artist pulls away from the kiss and studies his boyfriend for a moment. "So we are going to go out and celebrate, yeah?"

"Well there is sort of this publicity event masquerading as a Christmas party or something, that I am expected to attend and I was hoping that you would accompany me as my date," replied the young police commander.

The redhead freezes. "Are you sure?"

"Only if you do not mind."

Daisuke nodded and smiled. "Do I have to dress like that? Because, I don't have anything… like that."

"Laid out on the bed, and you have time to shower, there is a bit of charcoal—" Satoshi as he reaches up and brushes Daisuke's cheek and a charcoal smudge there.

With a chuckle, Daisuke playfully slapped Satoshi's shoulder and walked further into the apartment and to the shower. Satoshi watched him go the same bitter smile adorning his face. He waited for the bathroom door to close before he grabbed a pair of house shoes and placed them outside of the bathroom for when Daisuke was done.

Why? He asked himself that often. It wasn't that he had finished his theses in about two and a half years. No, that wasn't what had happened. He had been working on these ever since he had gotten his undergraduates degree. They had told him that he had to wait to get his graduates degrees; they never said anything about waiting to do the work. And then well he was dying, a dead man walking really. There was so much that he wanted to do! So much so that he could not name a one. But they were not meant to be and he didn't want to leave half finished work behind. So he would die Dr. Hiwatari, Satoshi youngest Police Commander.

Daisuke came out of the bedroom, cuffs undone and the tie draped around his neck. He looked dishevelled, hopeless, pathetic, and adorable. Satoshi smiled and walked up to the redhead making quick work of the cuffs and the bowtie. Satoshi took a step back and admired his love and he smiled brighter. The shorter looked good, they looked good.

They took a taxi to the event; the motorcycle was not conducive to keeping nice clothes nice nor would it be good in the cold of the month. Daisuke wasn't sure where the party was even though he did noticed that it was decorated for Christmas even though they were only at the beginning of December. The people in attendance appeared to be mostly government officials, high ranking police officers, and some of the heads of various Universities in the area. It did seem to be a bit of a hodgepodge group, but they were all there for various reasons one of which was Satoshi.

They appeared to be the youngest people in the room and even as they got swallowed into the people, both boys knew that they stood out and it was even more apparent when they were approached, introduced and talked to. Well the people talked to Satoshi and didn't even seem to see Daisuke.

Niwa was fine with being ignored and that was until one important man asked Satoshi, "Did you not bring a date?"

The whole room seemed to quiet down and Satoshi reached down and took Daisuke's hand. "This is Niwa, Daisuke and he so graciously agreed to be my date tonight." Satoshi gave the man a tight cold smile and Daisuke tried not to blush.

Satoshi had chosen his words carefully. For those words could be taken either way. A few cameras snapped their photo and the elder man shifted his gaze to the cameras and then back to their wonder boy. "You cannot do just one thing far from the norm, Hiwatari" He then slapped Satoshi hard a couple times on the back, in a supposed mentor-like position. The cameras ate it up.

Daisuke was bored stiff. Most of the people who already talked to Satoshi the first time around came back to try and include the redhead (that they previously ignored). Once they found out that he was an ordinary art student and knew nothing of politics or law they returned to ignoring him.

Since they were outed to all but those in denial of the ways of the world and people, Satoshi would occasionally take Daisuke's hand in his or lead him around the room with a hand on the small of his back. The backlash appeared to be minimal. Most of the people got over their shock when it came to Hiwatari, Satoshi over half a decade prior when he was refused entrance to graduate school and instead became a police commander.

As the night continued the two youths were given breathing room and they drifted to a corner of the party, their drinks in hand. Daisuke gave Satoshi a pitying look. "I don't know how you do it, I never liked politics or law before, but I like them less now."

Satoshi smirked, "Yes, you did so love to break the law before," Daisuke gave him a small swat, "I was in such a strange position before, I knew exactly who the thief was and could do nothing about it."

"I wouldn't say 'nothing'."

The blunette shook his head and chuckled, leaning against the wall he asked, "So tell me about your classes."

"I find it interesting how the introductory art courses introduce you to a large array of mediums, and techniques and they all seem to accumulate to the human figure. And they all say that the human figure is so difficult and yet it is still in the introductory courses."

"Well the human body is very complex but I feel that it is also due to us being humans ourselves so we have an own self-image that we apply to all the other humans that we see, so there is just so many filters that a body goes through to get to paper. You do like your classes don't you?"

Daisuke nodded and smiled. "Yeah I do, they are great. However I have been told that for my homework I need to stop drawing you. You were in my entrance application and most of my homework assignments or final projects. They say that I need to grow as an artist and not stick to what I know."

"Well I guess I can see where they are coming from," laughed Satoshi, a full bellied laugh that actually hurt, "I was in your self-portrait!"

"Of course you were," replied Daisuke, his cheeks turning red.

There was a loud thud in Satoshi's ears as his heart seemed to stop beating it was an almost physical pain and he just gave his boyfriend a pleading 'please continue look'.

"You have always been there, in the background, not always sleeping though… you're the one that said that I could be an artist… a Niwa an artist! In a lot of ways I wouldn't have taken this path were I without you and besides what is a Niwa without a Hikari?" Daisuke looked down at his glass swirling the golden liquid around before he looked up at Satoshi again and added, "I don't think that I told you before but I am really proud of you."

Satoshi looked up at Daisuke and gave the same fake smile that he had given to the rest of the well-wishers. "Arigatou Dai-kun, that means a lot to me."

Daisuke shook his head and lightly punched the taller's shoulder, "Shut up you. I really mean it. Here I am a junior undergraduate and my boyfriend already has his doctorates, that is an amazing thing and I want you to know that. Even if you did keep it a secret from me for so long. Not many people our age could have a full time and prestigious career and get their masters and their doctorates degree. So, yes, Dr. Hiwatari, Satoshi I am proud of you."

There was a pregnant pause, "Dai, I don't know what to say."

"Say we can get out of here?"

"Yes, yes of course." Satoshi takes Daisuke's hand and leads him to the door they make the needed stops to say good-bye to a few key figures, but they are out in the brisk air soon. They hailed a cab and get home rather quickly.

Once they get into their apartment Daisuke's demeanour seems to change and he prowls towards Satoshi. "You know you look really good in that tux, but I bet you would look better out of it."

Both boys freeze and look at each other, there is still lust in Daisuke's eyes but a blush is rising on his cheeks. Satoshi just had to ask, "Did you really just say that?"

Daisuke laughs first he sort of doubles over and then rights himself using Satoshi for support. Still red faced he slips his hands under Satoshi's suit jacket sliding them up to the blunette's shoulders and pushing the jacket off his shoulders. "I did… and I…. anou… I mean it… do you think…" Daisuke trails off but he shifts his eyes towards the bedroom.

Satoshi smiles kindly down at Daisuke fiddling with his bowtie. "Of course." What else could he have said? For what is a Niwa without a Hikari? A Hikari without a Niwa? And he would say yes to Daisuke for an eternity even after he could no longer draw breath to utter the word.

Author's Note: Sorry that it is getting a bit on the depressing side but Sato is dying.
