Finally back! It was too late of an update. I'm really sorry!

Destiny and Fate Ch 27

As the pendulum swung away, the swarm of black clouds which fended off iridescent luminosities lightened its hue as the flaming Sun rose above the stern barricade of clouds while the silvery moon and glittering stars sank below the horizon. The city awoke to a newer day as the sky finally ceased its weeping after exhausting all of its tears. However, the sky still remained devoid of life, possessing no matter of solace to offer. The air was still heavy with remnants of rain and the wind, sharpened by chilling temperature, sliced through the streets. Regardless, life was present outside, enduring the cold December morning. Saved from the blistering cold were individuals known as students who earned their well-deserved winter break. Hikari, with her occupation falling under such category, stayed sheltered within her towering home and prepared a hot cup of caffeinated beverage to begin her day. With hazel drink in her hand, she sat on the living room couch, skimming through large collection of magazines neatly stacked at the table in front of her. A careful sip of coffee and a page turn, the cycle continued until she emptied the cup. Having lost the track of time from focusing on the papers, she glanced at her watch to check the time.

'1:45 P.M.'

She read the time in her mind upon viewing the needle positions on the jewel encrusted watch. Her eyes eventually caught another piece of jewelry glistening majestically on the fourth finger of the same hand her luxurious watch was worn. Even with diminished light due to the gray shield of vapor, the beauty of the ethereal ring on her perfect hand overshadowed the incomparable elegance of the northern lights. Storm of thoughts passed by as her eyes dived into the divine light of her ring. Before she dove deeper into thoughts, Takeru made his entrance to the living room, with his large hand covering his yawn.

"Morning, Hikari."

He greeted the beautiful girl after his yawn stopped. She, instead of greeting words, made a remark on his sleeping habits he developed lately, knowing little that Takeru had only 4 or less hours of sleep throughout the weeks of December as he spent the nights training his marksmanship and preparing to defend her against Apocalypse.

"You sure like to sleep a lot."

"You should sleep a lot too. It helps you grow taller."

He smiled jokingly as he came down the stairs to join Hikari on the couch.

"We're past that age. Also, I'm not that short, you're just tall."

She fought back his statement while staring at the giant man approach her proximity.

"Come on, it's winter break. You should relax a little."

He spoke as he sat down by her side. She countered him once more while creating some space between them.

"Relaxing a little doesn't mean sleeping through half of day."

A devious smile appeared on his face.

"If you want to spend time with me, just say so."

"…."

She averted his gaze by picking up a magazine on the table and skimmed through the pages. Following a light chuckle, Takeru closed the gap between him and her.

"How about a date? It's been a while and the weather finally cleared up."

Hikari flinched slightly as she felt his hand stroking her neck and moving to her shoulder. She felt an electrifying sensation spreading throughout her body from Takeru's gentle yet sensual stroke on her soft, lily-white skin. She clenched the magazine pages tightly, trying to numb the sensation. Afterwards, she shook off his hand and rejected his date offer.

"I can't."

"Why is that?"

"I need to be somewhere."

"Oh, really? Where?"

"Tokyo Department store. So, get dressed."

With that, she got off the couch and began walking back to her bedroom. After being distracted briefly upon viewing her elegant body line and delicate, silky hair, Takeru threw a question at the girl disappearing behind the door.

"Then, how about tomorrow?"

However, the door separated the two and he was left unanswered and alone in the large living room. A breath of weary sigh, then, Takeru too headed back to his room to prepare for an outing. Silence lurked in Hikari's house and until the two gathered at the foyer to head out.

"Why are you dressed like that?"

Hikari scolded her companion in a white, short sleeved T-shirt and dark blue jeans. She continued on.

"It's winter. Dress like it."

"I don't have anything casual except something like these."

The scolded man explained the reason behind his choice of clothing while pleasuring his eyes with the sight of Hikari in a beautiful outfit. Her perfect legs were sheltered by a pair of long, black boots and dark leggings, matching the color of the small coat above. Her black themed apparel ended at her neck, shielded by a white knit scarf that gave a strong color contrast as well as a great blend to ward off the depressing image that black clothing can have. She seemed deserving to be on a front cover of a fashion magazine's winter catalog.

"Ha…"

The victim of Takeru's scrutiny sighed once before speaking on.

"Then, bear it a little bit. We'll get something on the way."

Instead of any words or gestures of answer, the man in thin layer of clothing smiled regally. Her curiosity stirred by his sudden smile, she questioned him.

"What is it? Did I say something funny?"

"No. I just felt happy that you worried about me."

She gasped silently, with her lips parted slightly. Then, she quickly turned and began heading out the door.

"I just don't want to live with a sick person."

"Still, thanks."

He followed her after and the two soon embarked their journey by going out to the cold world in a black vehicle with a small silver statue along with an emblem containing amalgamation of two R's embedded on the front of the car. Hikari's silence when driving was normality as she occupied herself with her cell phone rather than conversing. As always, Takeru broke the silence after few minutes into their drive.

"So, you got something to buy at the department store?"

"Not really."

"Then?"

"I'm meeting Miyako there."

"Oh, your friend from America."

She nodded while glancing at the digital clock display in the car. Knowing how the two haven't had a chance to meet for a long time, Takeru offered a considerate suggestion.

"Won't I be a bother, then? Should I wait for you in the car?"

However, she refused his generous offer.

"If I wanted to be with just her, I wouldn't have you drive me and leave you by yourself."

"I'll be fine. I don't mind waiting at all."

"Just come."

She reiterated herself, and Takeru probe no further on the matter and obey her demand.

"Okay."

Not long after, they arrived at their destination. Upon exiting the car, Takeru felt a sting on his skin from the piercing chill. Even the stone floor, wall, and pillars of the parking structure were mildly frozen by the icy air as well, allowing Takeru to experience a small hint of winter still more to come. Though discomforted by the coldness, he found solace in the fact that Hikari was not at all affected by the brutal temperature thanks to her garments. He soon refuged himself within the department store building, heated pleasantly to comfort the customers. After a quick glance at the directory, Hikari began leading the way. Takeru questioned about her friend's whereabouts.

"So where is your friend at?"

"She's not here yet."

"Then, where are we going?"

Hikari sighed once before answering his question again.

"Did you forget? You need some proper clothes."

"Oh, right. Thanks."

He gave her a warming smile which she refused to glance at and indifferently walked away. On their journey to the men's apparel section, customers and employees alike showered the dazzling duo with gazes of admiration. They were initially captivated by the young girl whose height stood above that of the average female population. With her height complemented by her elegant figure, fashionable attire, and divinely beauty, Hikari outshined any supermodels that the world had seen so far. Men and women became infatuated by her loveliness and the building was soon echoing with comments and murmurs of her remarkable attractiveness. People would enjoy the pleasant delight of viewing such magnificent individual until their eyes went to the towering man walking behind them.

"Oh my…"

"He's huge."

"Wow…"

Everything about him was shocking to them, his majestic golden hair, ethereal azure eyes, staggering height, broad shoulders and muscular arms that were clearly visible due to his thin T-shirt. Unlike Hikari, however, Takeru received more of scrutiny rather than fascination as individual such as he was not common to be seen around. However, both Takeru and Hikari paid little attention as a situation such as this had become a regular occurrence whenever they went out in public. After few moments spent on walking and riding escalators, they arrived at 4th floor with many of the finest male garments on display. Majority of the popular brands known globally were visible all around. Quick glances here and there, then, they began browsing through the clothes of a luxurious male brand. A well-dressed female employee greeted the duo after a brief gasp of awe.

"Welcome to Ermenegildo Zegna. How may I help you?"

"We're looking for some winter clothes for him."

Hikari answered while pointing at Takeru standing beside her.

"Right this way, please."

She led them into a different part of the store and began speaking.

"Here are our winter attires. We have some casuals here and if you're looking for something more formal, then it will be on the right side further down. Let me know if you need any help."

"Thank you."

With that, they started browsing the clothes in the store. While Takeru slowly walked around and tried on a few attires, Hikari had already picked several pairs of clothing and handed them to Takeru.

"These should be good."

Upon looking at the pile of stylish yet casual apparels on his large hands, Takeru inquired the slender girl who gave them.

"Aren't these too much to carry?"

"Just pick one that you'll wear for today and ask them to deliver the rest to my house."

"Oh, I didn't know about that. Okay."

"Let me know when you're done. I'll be outside."

She stepped outside of the store and left him to deal with the purchasing. He completed the transaction with the digital money by using his cell phone and proceeded to the changing room to put on his new clothing. He dressed himself quickly and exited the store to not keep Hikari waiting long.

"How do I look?"

She found herself dazed upon seeing Takeru rejoin her. On him now was a thick black shirt, keeping the color scheme similar and balanced. Over his shirt, a wool trench coat of deep gray shrouded his upper body, giving a mild contrast to his dark-themed attire. The thick, winter clothes enhanced his already stout stature and broad shoulders, making him seem even larger while maintaining a chic look. It was a different sight from what she was accustomed to as Hikari had only seen him in either formal attire or simple clothing such as the plain shirt and pants he initially wore. Physically fit and handsome to begin with, the stylish outfit had transformed him into a model as well. Realizing that she had been staring at him, she quickly faced away and replied in a tone which she believed to be indifferent.

"Good."

Though he knew she was trying to sound uncaring, he did not voice his thoughts on the matter and let out a statement of different subject.

"You know, this fits me surprisingly well. How did you know that this would fit me?"

"…I just looked at you and figured it out."

"Really? Wow, you're amazing."

"…Anyway, let's go. She's here now."

"Oh, okay."

Both departed from the men's apparel section and embarked on their way to meet Hikari's friend. Takeru was still amazed at the fact that she guessed the right size for him and ceased not complimenting her throughout. Despite her claim, however, she had not known his size from a simple visual observation. It was due to many incidents she could not even begin to hope on speaking of.

'I got know because you put me in your arms so many times!'

Her thought echo continuously and soon, she began to remember the heartwarming sensation of being held in his arms. She clenched tight one fist to ignore the sensation. She did not desire to be swayed by it because she knew that her currently racing heart was due to the romantic feeling she grew for the deceased man she saw in Takeru Ishida. Due to be married shortly, she did not want her heart to be thrown into discord by her love for the dead Takeru who she still couldn't stop seeing in the man of same name walking beside her. Sentiments clashed and tempestuous waves of emotion surfaced in her heart. However, before the waves could conjure torrential storm, familiar voice of her friend appeased her tumultuous mind.

"Hey, guys~!"

Ahead just a few steps, Miyako was waving her hand joyously with a smile that always invoked positive energy. Her appearance today was quite contrary to what Takeru saw at the recent celebratory gathering at the Yagami Corporation's headquarters. Though she still had her glasses, her office lady attire was replaced by a white long coat with fur surrounding the neck and shoulder area, shielding her from cold and emphasizing her stunningly beautiful hair color simultaneously. She threw herself to Hikari for a tight embrace and greeted her dear friend.

"Good to see you again, Hikari."

"Me too."

Her delightful voice was equally enlivening as her bright smile, allowing Hikari to find solace. After another squeeze, Miyako let her loose and turned her attention to the tall, pale man.

"And I didn't forget about you, Takeru. Can I call you Takeru? Or something else?"

She spoke in a fast manner with dazzling smile while offering her hand.

"Takeru is fine. Pleasure to see you again."

He accepted her greeting gesture along with his own majestic smile.

"Likewise. By the way, I'm really sorry for being late."

She apologized to both about her tardiness. Hikari forgave her and inquired her.

"It's fine. Why were you late though?"

"That's a funny story! I woke up late today because I was still jetlagged. Can you believe it? I slept until 2 P.M."

She answered Hikari while laughing at her own silliness. Hikari gave a quick glance to the man who also overslept and sighed wearily. Then, she spoke to her friend who was still mildly laughing.

"Well, at least you're here now. Anyway, where should we go?"

"Can we get something to eat first, please~? I couldn't eat anything because I woke up late."

She begged with an innocent, playful tone. Following after was another sigh from Hikari before acquiescing her plea.

"Okay. He needed to eat too anyway."

"Really? How come?"

"Same reason as yours. Overslept."

"Oh wow! Really?! Hahaha~!"

She burst out her laughter again at this bizarre coincidence. She made an inquiry to Takeru after calming her laughter.

"Can I take a wild guess and ask if you're jetlagged too?"

"I am sorry for disappointing you, but I'm not jetlagged. I simply overslept."

"Oh, okay. Wow, still a funny coincidence, don't you think?"

"Certainly."

The two exchanged warming smiles and Hikari urged the two after to continue on their day.

"Come on, let's go."

Before long, the three entered the elevator and arrived at the top floor of the department store. After a short walk, they were halted briefly by two well-dressed personnel standing in front of a luxurious entrance way with VIP Sky Lounge lettered above. They were quickly allowed entry when the workers noticed the divine face of an angelic girl who recently gave the heir of Yagami Corporation her hand in holy matrimony.

"Welcome to our Sky Lounge, miss."

A spacious hall greeted them. Marble stones decorated the surroundings and tall glass windows presented them the view of the outside world. Though the unlit city under a gray sky was not at all soothing or appealing, it was a spectacular view nonetheless. Quite an impressive interior and design, but Takeru found no awe to be held as he was spoiled by Yagami Corporation's remarkable festivity building and Hikari's glamorous glass tower home. Soon, they were approached by another worker who queried of their business.

"Good afternoon. How may I help you today?"

Hikari answered.

"We're here for lunch."

"Oh, of course. This way please."

Then, the three followed the suited employee and arrived soon at a luxurious indoor restaurant with an equally impressive interior as the spacious hall they were just in. As seen at the hall, the restaurant was decorated with glass windows, granting a superb view of the city. Also, refined mixture of modern and antique design of the diner presented a pleasing atmosphere for customers to enjoy while dining. They were soon led to a neatly set table.

"Your server will be right with you in a moment. Please enjoy."

With that, the employee left the three beautiful people to look at the menu. After a quick glance, Miyako whispered to her friend beside her.

"This place is really expensive. I don't know if I have enough money right now, Hikari. I don't even have cash right now because I forgot convert my dollars, I do have a card, but I have to think about other expenses and…"

Suspecting that her rant would grow long, Hikari halted her.

"Just order. I'll take care of it."

"But then, I'll feel bad."

"Do we really have go through this every time I treat you, Miyako? It's okay. Don't feel bad about it."

"Thanks, Hikari~"

Out of joy and gratitude, she hugged Hikari seated next to her. Upon seeing such situation, a small smile appeared on Takeru's face, invoking Miyako's curiosity.

"What are you smiling at?"

She questioned lightly.

"I was just thinking that you two are really close."

"Of course! We didn't see each other for a while, but that doesn't bother us at all, right, Hikari?"

"Yeah."

Before another conversation took place, a server approached table and questioned of their selections. Having taken care of her meal prior to their meeting, Hikari ordered a light appetizer while both Takeru and Miyako selected entrées to properly nourish themselves. A quick scribble on a tiny notepad and the server left the three to notify the chefs of the order.

"By the way, Takeru, I barely know you. Would you like to tell me about yourself?"

Takeru contemplated on how to approach her question. He understood that her inquiry indicated that she knew nothing of him and his relationship with Hikari. Understanding that discussing his complex relationship with Hikari could potentially ruin this friendly outing, Takeru resolved to avoid the topic of their relationship.

"Well, there's nothing much about me. Just a lazy man who sleeps a lot."

Miyako giggled at his statement and spoke on.

"And a funny man too."

"Glad you find me humorous."

She ceased her giggling and continued.

"But I really think there's more to you."

"What makes you say that?"

"Because it's unusual for Hikari to befriend someone. There must have been something special about you that caught her attention. Right, Hikari?"

"…I guess…"

She replied reluctantly and shifted her gaze away from Takeru's eyes. Though both he and she knew the identity of the special quality that attracted her attention, Takeru concealed this information from Miyako.

"I don't think there's anything special about me."

He gave a pause before continuing.

"Whatever the case, I'm eternally grateful because I was blessed with an opportunity to be acquainted with someone as marvelous as Hikari."

Hikari flinched mildly upon hearing his statement. His words were not simple flattery, but an expression of his thoughts towards the reason why Hikari brought him into her life. He was genuinely grateful for his resemblance to Takeru Takaishi and possessed no remorse that it was the prime factor that sparked their meeting. Though he intended to appease her mind with deliverance of his truest thoughts, his kindness invoked guilt that she promised not to feel anymore. She aimed to rid herself of it, but could not do so as Miyako commented on his personality.

"Wow, you're quite a gentleman."

Her comment reminded Hikari of the exceedingly altruistic, noble quality of Takeru that would have won her heart had she lived a different, simpler life. It pained her even more because her dear, late friend also possessed the same chivalrous kindness as the gentleman sitting across from her.

"Thank you for your kind words."

As Takeru expressed his gratitude for her compliment, the fine cuisine they ordered arrived at their table. At last, Hikari was finally able to distract herself from matters regarding Takeru by Miyako's sanguine energy that she emanated upon her innocent joy of enjoying a delectable gourmet platter.

"Wow, it looks so good. Thank you so much, Hikari~~."

She hugged her friend once more, infecting Hikari with her uplifting energy.

"No problem."

She replied back while escaping away from her tight, loving grip. Takeru smiled at Miyako's affectionate gestures and Hikari's adorable attempts to break free from her friend's embrace. Soon after, they all began dining and enjoyed the scrumptious meal offered by the extravagant establishment stationed high above the Earth. While dining, the three engaged in light conversation. Takeru would rarely make audible his charming voice as he wished not to disturb Hikari from chatting with her friend who she missed exceedingly. While Hikari concealed most of her previous events involving the silent blonde, Miyako revealed to her all of her New York life. Intrigue and admiration gleamed in Hikari's eyes as she listened to her friend's vast experiences, knowledge she attained, and independent lifestyle. Such life was remarkably appealing to the young maiden whose freedom was pilfered and life became restricted by the colossal conglomerate of the Yagami family. The two were occupied in their chatter until they were finished with their meal. As they were paying and exiting the fine diner, Miyako apologized to the man who was excluded from majority of their conversation.

"I'm so sorry for only talking to Hikari. It was really rude."

"Please don't apologize. I know that you two didn't see each other for a long time. Plus, I enjoyed listening to all of your stories."

"Wow, I can't believe how kind and thoughtful you are."

Miyako replied with a happy smile which invoked Takeru to present a captivating smile of his own.

"By the way, where should we go now?"

Miyako inquired both Takeru and Hikari excitedly.

"Hmm. I don't have anywhere particular that I'd like to go. How about you, Hikari?"

Takeru answered quickly after a relatively short thought and turned to Hikari for her answer. She too was in thought. However, her contemplation was not about her desired destination. A short while passed and she asked the tall man beside for a favor.

"Hey…do you think…you can wait here a little bit?"

"I don't mind, but could you tell me why?"

"I…uh…want to look for something, but it's…uh.."

Seeing how she was hesitant to continue, Takeru relieved her from the stress of revealing her perhaps private reason.

"It's alright. I'll wait here. Take your time, okay?"

A warm solace enchanted Hikari upon receiving his generosity and handsome expression that portrayed well his benevolence. Knowing she would falter should she gaze longer, she faced away and turned to Miyako.

"Let's go."

"Oh, sure. We'll be back as soon as we can, okay~?"

The pleasant lady in glasses exclaimed as she walked with her friend out of the VIP area.

"Don't worry about me. Have fun."

He watched the two girls until they were no longer in his sight. Left by himself, he wandered around the spacious lounge until he found a secluded seating area with a view of the outside. He stared out the tall glass window and observed the city beneath him. Though high above the ground, he could see that many people occupied the streets. It was a pleasant change of scenery as there was never enough life present in the city due to the unceasing rain. After few minutes spent on admiring the view, Takeru began thinking of an important matter that preoccupied him during the recent days. With the final day of December to be followed in days of single digit number, he checked for preparations made and yet to be made. Like a colossal collage, multiple scenarios and situations passed by in his mind, allowing Takeru to detect any factor that could jeopardize the safety of his close one. His vast computation was suddenly interrupted by a tap on his shoulder. He was shaken, though he did not show it physically, to see the owner of the hand that disrupted his thought. Behind him stood the lean man of black hair in black suit that gave a heavy contrast to the uniform of a delivery company he wore when he demanded from Takeru the life of Hikari's betrothed.

"Good to see you again, Takeru."

"Can't say the same for me."

He responded coldly towards his greeting. Ken displayed a light grin and replied as he sat on the chair facing Takeru.

"Is that a way to talk to a friend who is trying to save your life?"

"Sorry, I never had a friend who encourages murder."

Ken laughed mildly at his sarcastic remark.

"Fair enough."

"Cut the small talk. What do you want from me this time?"

Takeru demanded the reason behind Ken's sudden visit in menacing, low voice. The powerful aura exuding from his deep voice froze the surroundings and sank down the mood the lowest ground. Despite such dominating energy, Ken was unbothered and began answering the overwhelming man of golden mane.

"Relax. I'm just here to offer you some help with your job."

Takeru pierced him with a skeptical leer as Ken's 'help' was a vague term that does not necessarily follows its intended definition. Following the sharp glare, he declined Ken's offer of assistance.

"I don't need it. I'll take care of it on my own."

"Really? Care to explain how you're going to do it?"

"I prefer not to."

"Why?"

"You know why."

Silence followed after that last sentence and the two sat motionless, clashing their glares in order to triumph the other in the invisible battle of will. After a lengthy moment of struggling, Ken withdrew and slouched on his chair for comfort.

"Yeah, I get it, Takeru. It's natural that you don't trust me."

"Precisely. Now, will you be on your way or should I be?"

"Neither, I'm afraid. We still need to talk."

"I got nothing left to talk about."

"I do, unfortunately for you."

He reached his hand into his pocket and placed 10 photos on the coffee table separating the two individuals.

"Take a look"

Takeru reluctantly took the photos and examined them. What he saw were detailed pictures of a glass tower building's interior and exterior. His initial thought was that these were pictures of Hikari's home. However, he quickly arrived to conclusion that they're not as he knew her home well. The entrance of the building, stairs, corridors, and the inside of the elevator were foreign visuals to him.

"It's the place where your target lives."

Takeru directed his gaze quickly back to the owner of the photos who continued speaking.

"These photos are printed from the security cameras in his home. These photos contain all the possible routes you can take to get to your target."

Ken gave a small pause before resuming.

"As you can see, there are no blind spots. So tell me, exactly how do you plan to plead innocent when you're caught on camera?"

"…"

It was a twisting turn of event that Takeru did not foresee which surprised him massively. He never had the opportunity to examine Taichi's home as whereabouts of a famous figure are often concealed and not released to the general public. Knowing that Ken had obtained these detailed pictures regardless, Takeru understood that Ken had a certain connection which allows him to know more about Taichi. Therefore, he could not lie his way out as it could raise suspicion and put him in further disadvantage. Though placed at an unfavorable position, he did not display any shock or panic as that could also become a factor that his opponent could exploit. He desperately thought of a way to escape from this despairing situation. Before he could think of a solution, however, Ken applied further pressure.

"You still think you don't need my help?"

There was no more chance or excuse to refuse his offer. By accepting his help, his actions would be shackled to a limited number of options which could potentially endanger his plan to save both individuals by the name of Yagami. Though he knew of his disadvantageous position and potential consequences, Takeru decided to accept his help as there was no merit in attempting to refuse his offer. Instead of betting on a battle where his loss is inevitable, he chose to gamble on a new frontier where he could attain information that could aid him significantly. This decision came to him when he realized that he had already acquired new information from Ken.

"Fine."

"Good choice. Well, then."

With that said, Ken reached again his hand underneath his black suit jacket and what came out was a familiar item that he had grown was accustomed to. Lying still on Ken's palm was a menacing yet beautiful revolver that glistened with starry glow. Ken, then, stretched his arm towards the man on the opposite side. Takeru remained still while glaring intensely at the onyx pupils in front of him.

"…Mind explaining?"

"Nothing really. It's a tool to help you do your job."

"…"

Having agreed to receive his aid, he had no excuse to reject the weapon and took it reluctantly from Ken's hand. He mildly flinched when he grasped it as a disturbing sensation surged throughout his body. The gun was frighteningly comfortable that he felt as though it fused together with his hand. It was a terrifying comfort unlike the one he experienced during the nights he spent on honing his marksmanship. This particular revolver was vastly different from the regular firearms and felt as if it was made solely for him. Most noticeably, the weight was heavier than most revolvers due to its large size. However, this hefty weight countered Takeru's impressive arm strength and granted him a firm balance. Also, typical features such as the hammer, bullet chamber, and trigger were engineered differently to match its size accordingly. This unusual dimension ultimately allowed Takeru's giant hands to utilize it with ease unlike other models which he had to make additional effort to reload and fire. Shaking off the sensation, he quickly concealed the weapon within his attire and redirected his focus to Ken who began speaking.

"Don't write this down anywhere and just memorize it."

"…"

"His house is located at the exact midpoint from here to the Yagami Corp's headquarters. You just saw how it looks like, so you should have no problem identifying the building."

A brief pause, then, he continued.

"He lives on the 24th floor. Go there during night and make your way up there. I'll take care of the security system. When you're there, shoot the window with your gun and push him out of it."

It was a gruesome instruction. No matter of miracle could save an individual from such fall. Even if he survives the fall, majority of his bones would be demolished and his vital organs would practically explode upon impact with the solid ground. He would, then, experience an excruciating pain and struggle endlessly until death harvests his breath away. Though he had no intention of following his orders, he abided the revolting method of assassination with an expression befitting it.

"And pick up the empty bullet shells. Other than that, I just need you to tell me the time, so I know when to help you."

"The same time. End of December."

He responded in his deep voice again which sank the atmosphere even further. Had there been a person walking by, he or she would not have been able to leave as the strength to walk away would be stolen by the terror one would feel upon sensing the cold air around Takeru. Only reason why Ken could remain unfazed was because he had several leverages and advantages which he could use against Takeru to subdue him. If not, he too would have been ensnared by Takeru's intimidating aura. Shrugging off his intense energy, Ken spoke.

"I'd personally prefer it if you chose earlier time, but alright. As long as you get it done."

"…"

He remained silent and continued to glare at the man in black who soon commented about his behavior.

"You're oddly obedient and willing today."

He spoke with a hint of suspicion. Takeru knew that suspicion could be aroused from his behavior and predicted such turn of event the moment Ken appeared. As prepared and rehearsed in his mind, Takeru wore his façade and replied to his statement.

"It's because you involved her in it."

Though the volume which he let out these words was low, the power in his voice was immensely overwhelming. The intensity in his voice paralleled the terrifying strength as his wrathful shout, if not greater. Devastatingly cold ire visible in his eyes pierced Ken's dark pupils. Upon being impaled by his azure orbs of indignation, a disturbing chill spread throughout Ken's body. His instinct screamed in order to caution him upon sensing the life-threatening peril bleeding profusely from Takeru. Realizing that no positive outcome would be yielded from upsetting him, Ken decided to choose his words carefully.

"I'm sorry for using her. Otherwise, you would have never listened to me."

"What guarantee do I have that you won't hurt her after everything is done?"

The air grew thicker and heavier, making it difficult to breathe comfortably.

"You only have my words for it. If you do your job, I'll even make it my personal goal that she never comes to harm."

"…I'll hold you on to that."

"Fine by me."

Seconds later, Ken delivered a quick sentence after giving a quick glance behind Takeru.

"Speak of the devil."

Instead of turning his head, he observed the scene behind him via the reflection on the glass window. As Ken stated, Hikari was visible along with her lively companion, walking towards their direction.

"Looks like my time's up."

Ken spoke as he raised his body and tapped his clothes to rid the dusts accumulated from sitting down. Before directing his legs away, the man in dark apparel gave one last phrase.

"Don't forget. Night of December 31st."

He waited not for his response and immediately directed his legs away from the area after he delivered his words. Takeru watched him until his appearance vanished and footsteps were inaudible. Then, he finally relaxed his body and broke out of the character that he had been acting with. The unbearable aura that glaciated the world around him subsided along with the disappearance of Takeru's mask. He sought to rise up from his chair to meet them, but could not as he felt Hikari's presence behind him after her graceful hand tapped his wide shoulder. Soon after came her angelic voice.

"Hey."

Though only a single word, the sweet serenity of her voice rendered away whatever negative energy still lingering and forced a bright smile on Takeru's face. He, then, stood up and greeted the two ladies.

"Welcome back."

Never comfortable with expressing gratitude, Hikari stayed silent while Miyako bestowed him words of appreciation for his patience.

"Thanks for waiting. Hope we didn't make you wait too long."

"It's fine. It wasn't a long wait."

"Still, thanks."

"No problem."

The two exchanged light smiles before they were led to walking by Hikari.

"Come on, let's go."

"Oh, right. Okay~!"

With that, the trio walked around the capacious department store, often stopping where fashion items were present as the lively lady with glasses adored these particular types of products. Hikari and Miyako conversed with each other frequently, with topics varying from their past without each other to opinion about the items they are interested in. Takeru would abstain most of the time and only joined their chatter on rare occasions. He and his charming housemate refrained from purchasing while Miyako ran berserk with shopping. They were both awed by her abilities to find sales, hidden discounts, and run mathematical computations to quickly determine which deal was better. After countless transactions had taken place, Hikari finally commented on her shopping frenzy.

"Don't you think you're buying too much? What about your living expenses?"

"That's exactly why I'm looking for all those great deals!"

"Still, you should stop. Your hands are full."

"No, they're not. I only have 3 bags in my hands~"

The calmer lady sighed wearily and continued her lecture.

"You forgot the ones that Takeru is holding."

Upon being reminded that Takeru had generously offered to help carrying her items, she looked back at the kind man and saw that he was grasping roughly 10 bags in each hand.

"Oh, I'm so sorry that I forgot about you, Takeru! Aren't those heavy?"

She apologized as she ran back to the two legged shopping cart. He merely smiled brightly at her forgetfulness and replied with gentle voice.

"Don't worry. They're mostly clothes, so they're quite light."

"Still, let me carry some. I'm so sorry~!"

"No, no, it's okay. I'm fine."

"Oh, come on. Give me some."

She demanded while snatching away few bags from his hands. After stealing back few of her purchased products, she gave Takeru another apology and thanks.

"Thank you for helping me. And sorry, I was too caught up with shopping."

"Don't worry. I'm just glad to help you have fun."

"You are so nice. Thank you!"

The two traded cheerful smiles again. Then, Miyako turned back to her friend and spoke.

"Alright, I think I've done enough shopping like you said, Hikari."

"That's good, but how do you plan on taking all these home?"

"Uh…."

She glanced back at the still numerous amount of bags in Takeru's large hands before resuming.

"I am not so sure now that you mention it…"

"Ha… I guess we'll have to drive you back home."

"No, then, I'll feel bad."

"Then, you're going to carry them on your own?"

"I would if I could…"

"So just accept my help."

Unable to win against Hikari, she succumbed and decided to accept her aid.

"Okay. Thank you so much, you two!"

"No problem. Then, let's get back to the car."

Hikari suggested after checking the marvelous timepiece on her thin, sublime wrist. Upon hearing her proposition, Miyako complained in a childish tone.

"Eh~? There are still things I want to see."

"You always end up buying things even if you're just looking."

"Oh, right. Sorry."

"Then, let's go."

The composed girl started leading the two to the parking structure. Few trips on the elevator, then after moments of walking, they reached where Hikari's palatial vehicle was parked. Though now well clothed, Takeru could still sense the winter chill seeping through the crevices in the garments. The temperature had dropped since morning and would continue to plummet as the sun had already set beneath the horizon. However, even coldness did not bring down Miyako's bright personality.

"Wow, your car is amazing as always, Hikari."

She complimented while packing her bags on the rear compartment of the car. Even when she finished packing, she continued to examine the vehicle's exterior and found herself in awe. Hikari interrupted her friend's scrutiny after Takeru had loaded all the bags.

"Miyako, are you still full?"

"Huh? Not really, why?"

"Then, how about dinner? It's around that time."

"Wow, time flies when you're having fun! Now, let's go eat something tasty!"

She rushed herself to the backseat of the car joyfully. Before proceeding to the backseat to join her friend, Hikari gave Takeru directions to the restaurant she desired to visit. Following Hikari, the pale driver entered the car and stationed himself behind the steering wheel. He started the engine and began exiting the frozen parking structure. He was free to focus on the road and drove smoothly to better accommodate the ladies sitting in the back. Though lonely being a chauffeur, he did not mind as Hikari seemed to be enjoying her time with her friend despite her expressionless face. The two girls were heavily occupied in their conversation even after they had arrived at the restaurant. They became even further absorbed in each other's stories when slight bit of alcohol entered their body. Takeru declined heavy consumption, for he had to drive. Therefore, the two slender ladies drank the majority of the luscious red wine they were offered by the server. Thankfully, neither was intoxicated or impaired of their basic abilities. There was virtually no change in the two except increased passion in their voice. Just like in their previous meal, Hikari and Miyako grew oblivious of the passing time and the night deepened. Luckily, their conversation reached a stopping point shortly after they finished their plate as Hikari became aware of the time.

"Miyako, sorry to stop you, but let's continue some other time. It's late."

"Is it? Oh wow, I had no idea it was already this late. Okay."

With that, the three headed out of the diner and Takeru received yet another apology from the same girl who apologized hours before.

"Takeru, I'm so sorry for leaving you out again!"

He chuckled delightfully to her apology.

"As I said before, I had fun just listening to you two."

"Still, I'm really sorry. It's just that I haven't seen Hikari in so long."

"I understand. And I'm fine really."

Seeing that guilt was evident in her expression still, Takeru presented her his enchanting smile to soothe her troubled mind. The combination of his sweet voice and enticing facial expression was tremendously astounding. Even strangers around him were robbed of their heartbeats momentarily. The two ladies he accompanied were also allured like those around them. After losing few seconds to speechlessness, Miyako recovered herself to deliver her words of gratefulness.

"T..Thank you so much, Takeru. You are really kind."

"I try best."

"Next time, I'll make sure to talk to you more!"

"I'm looking forward to it."

Not much later, they returned to Hikari's car and went on the road to Miyako's home. Using the assistance given by the navigation system and his own sense of direction, he discovered the most efficient route and managed to arrive quicker to their destination. Upon arrival, a cluster of apartment complex was visible. The environment was cleanly kept with no filth in sight and few scenes of green lightened up the dull mood caused by group of gray apartment buildings.

"This way, guys~!"

Miyako led them into one of many buildings standing around them after all the bags have been pulled out of the car's rear storage. While waiting for the elevator to descend, Miyako conversed with the two individuals who kindly gave her a ride.

"By the way, I didn't clean up my house yet… So, do you think you can visit me some other time instead?"

"You still haven't cleaned it?"

Miyako quickly answered her angelic friend.

"No, I haven't…"

The elevator door opened and the three entered as Hikari responded to her statement.

"I don't mind it."

"But I do~."

Hikari gave a puzzled look and contemplated shortly before agreeing to her friend's request.

"Alright. Clean up by the next time we meet."

"Sure! I'll get started tonight!"

As she exclaimed, the elevator door opened and the three exited to arrive at the door of Miyako's home. She cleared the password lock and opened the door. Within their sight came a rather clean foyer where Miyako asked Takeru to lay down the hefty load of shopping bags.

"Don't be fooled by it. It's really messy once you get past it. Oh, Takeru, could you drop them off right here?"

"You sure you don't need help moving them?"

"I'll take them and sort them out later on my own. Thanks."

"Okay."

Slowly, the weight on his shoulder decreased as the bags left his hand one by one. When he finally lay them all down, she gave him another word of gratitude for his generosity and aid.

"Thank you so much for helping, Takeru. I really appreciate it."

"Don't mention it. I'm happy to help."

While replying to her thanks, he exited out of the foyer and stood next to Hikari who began speaking.

"Well, I'll see you later."

"Wait, I was going to see you guys off."

"It's inconvenient for you. Just stay here. Make sure to clean up."

"I will. It was so good to see you, Hikari~!"

She charged at her friend for an embrace and squeezed her affectionately. The brunette recipient hugged her back lightly with a word of farewell before struggling to escape from her grip.

"Goodnight."

After losing Hikari, Miyako turned to the tall man next to her.

"And it was great meeting you again, Takeru. I'm really sorry about today. I'll make it up to you next time!"

"It's fine. I had fun today. I hope you have a good night."

"You too! Bye guys~. Get home safely!"

"We will. Thank you."

"Bye~!"

After her final word, Miyako disappeared behind the door and the two was finally alone with each other after a long day. While descending back down to the ground level in the elevator, Takeru let out a comment.

"You got a wonderful friend."

"…Yeah."

"Did you have fun today?"

"…"

She nodded instead of verbal response as they reached the first floor. The cold winter air greeted them again as they walked out of the building. The mild remnants of rain and water they could feel in the morning were absent. The blades of wind grew even sharper upon arrival of dusk, cutting through the water molecules and letting them solidify in the sky. While walking to the car, Takeru witnessed a scene he found intriguing. He discovered that Hikari, despite her artic personality and demeanor, did not possess immunity against cold as she shivered slightly upon being caressed by the icy but arid air. He, then, concealed the weapon within his attire even deeper before shrouding her body with the wool coat he wore on top. The gray coat covered majority of her body due to their size difference and gave Hikari a sound protection from the chill as well as soothing warmth.

"I don't need it. We'll be in the car soon."

She spoke while trying to strip off the large coat. However, he stopped her by grabbing her soft hand.

"The car won't get warm immediately."

"..Then, what about you?"

"Not something I'm proud of, but I'm used to being out in the cold."

Noticing that his facial expression had no intention of getting his coat back, she chose to accept his gentlemanly gesture instead of arguing endlessly.

"…Don't blame me for catching a cold."

Then, Takeru made a tender smile and released her elegant hand from his grip. Soon after, he began driving back to Hikari's home. The two engaged in light conversation as they always did in the car.

"Are you tired? It was a long day."

"I'm fine."

"That's good to hear."

Not much else was exchanged between the two. And before he can bring up another topic, they had reached home as it was not too distant from her friend's. Soon, the car was stored away in the garage and the two went up to the home floor. Upon entering, Takeru let out a comment as he stretched his arms.

"Whew, what a day."

Hikari responded to his comment.

"You seem tired."

"Not really. It was a really fun day."

"You didn't do much though."

"Just being with you is enjoyable for me."

His kind words came with a smile befitting his gentle voice. Hikari intended to avert her gaze away, but she could not bring herself to turn her eyes away. She wondered why she couldn't. Was it the wine that is finally taking effect? Or was it simply because his smile is captivating? Before she can solve the mystery, Takeru continued on.

"On that note, how about a date, Hikari?"

"…"

A warm shock hit her heart as she remembered the sensation of Takeru's fingers stroking her when he asked the same question hours ago. She numbed the feeling yet again by clenching her fists tight and mustered enough strength to refuse his offer. She voiced her thoughts with a slight hesitation.

"Sorry…I don't think.. I want to do that…"

"Can I hear why?"

Takeru begged her for the reason behind her refusal. Without looking into his eyes, she answered.

"…It's not right…I'm getting married soon…If Taichi knew about it, then he would feel hurt…"

"His feelings, huh…"

"…Yeah…"

A short silence filled the room. The two stood facing each other without their eyes meeting. After staring at his body for some time, Hikari broke the silence.

"Anyway, I'm going to sleep. You should too."

She then, turned away and began heading up the stairs leading to her room in the upper level. She wanted to escape into her room before Takeru could stop her and convince her by stirring her heart. However, she could not take fast steps or run as the atmosphere was too delicate. Her worry came true when she reached halfway of the stairs. She was halted by Takeru's heavy voice.

"Then, what about my feelings?"

"…"

"Don't they matter?"

His words hit her sharply. Indeed, his feelings mattered deeply to her. However, she did not want to be swayed by him and his words. She knew that if she let him convince her and accept his date offer, her heart would weaken again. She also knew that weakening of her heart would be because of Takeru Takaishi and not the man of the same name living in her house. She desired no longer to feel any attachment to the deceased gentleman as she made a promise not long ago. Unfortunately, she couldn't yet keep her promise and understood that she would not be able to if she went on a date with Takeru. Wanting to move on from Takeru Takaishi not only because of her promise but for her own sake, she resolved to stay adamant and refuse the date offer. With fierce determination in her, she faced back at the tall man still standing in the lower level and finally gazed into his eyes as she spoke.

"Stop."

She continued on with strong tone after a short pause.

"Don't be selfish. You want to feel happy even if it meant hurting other people's feelings?"

"…"

"Honestly, I'm disappointed. I thought you were better than that."

She couldn't afford to reveal to him that she still saw Takeru Takaishi in him despite her promise. Though she ended up delivering harsh sentences, she had no other way conceal herself while declining the date. Takeru responded with soft, sincere voice shortly after.

"Do you really believe that I'm selfish? Please, ask yourself again."

He was not. She didn't even need to bother thinking about it. There was no greater example of unselfishness and kindness like him. However, she chose to refute this truth for the moment.

"You're certainly acting that way right now."

"So you know I'm not selfish normally."

She gasped silently at his response. She made a critical mistake of failing to choose her words carefully which allowed Takeru to counter her claim perfectly with no room to argue back. Takeru resumed speaking.

"Then, is it that wrong for me to ask you on a date?"

"…"

Hikari wondered why Takeru was so oddly fierce with his statements today. She was curious about what was making him so anxious and relentless about his wish. Petty jealousy? Attention deprivation? She used today's events to base her assumptions on. However, Takeru was not a man whose emotion would be agitated by trivial reasons. In the end, she discovered nothing and couldn't decipher what was on Takeru's mind that was causing him to act in such manner. She, then, returned to the matter at hand and thought about the question that he just gave to her. Hikari believed that Takeru, of all people, truly deserved to act selfish once in a while after all the kind deeds he had done for her. Sadly, she couldn't voice such thought. Soon, she felt her gaze soften the longer she stared into Takeru's fine, cerulean eyes. Worried that he might see through her emotion, she recollected herself and began putting on a mask, transforming her soft gaze to piercing glare and empowering her normally delicate voice. Behind the newly created mask, she delivered a heavy sentence to impose her seriousness.

"To think that you were acting kind all this time for this type of opportunity… I really misjudged you."

She regretted her statement immediately. She meant to tell him that expecting a reward after acts of kindness was not necessarily right. Hikari didn't realize the harshness of the words she chose to speak until the moment had already passed. Though she made an unmoving resolve to reject the date idea, she believed that she should amend her faults in wording and sought to apologize. The one who spoke first, however, was Takeru.

"I'm sorry, Hikari. I was being a little childish there. Sorry for ruining your good day like this."

She was robbed of her chance to apologize. The recipient of her poorly chosen words apologized first for his behavior and gave a bitter smile containing his sincerity. Upon viewing his expression, she felt that she must apologize as well, but could not harness again the courage to speak out. Fear shackled her. Never being capable of speaking her mind straightforward, she was afraid she might pain him more by accidentally voicing misleading words during her attempts to initiate her apology. She merely stood motionless in lament as she watched Takeru approach the stairs. Slowly, he walked up and closer to Hikari who was worried that he might say something that would affect her heart again. As she anticipated, he stopped just right in front of her. What came from him was nothing of serious matter that disrupted her mind.

"Can I have my jacket back by the way?"

He asked with such sweet manner and voice as if to atone for his unsightly behavior that ended Hikari's good day with bitterness and annoyance. Realizing that she still had his thick jacket over her, she handed it back to him without facing him. Then, she began walking to her room without a word or glance while Takeru gave her his last words for the day.

"Good night."

She separated herself from him behind the closed door and sat on her bed in thought. Her head was overflowing with countless emotions and thoughts. The loudest thought that echoed in her mind was her regret in hurting Takeru's feelings. Eventually, however, her lament subsided and turned into sympathy. Her heart swayed the more she remembered all the kindness Takeru gave her. Though still wary and reluctant, she began to believe that she could at least go on a date with him for all his efforts. However, she was still worried of becoming wrongfully infatuated with Takeru and detested herself for not being able to honor her promise.

"…"

She let out a silent sigh as she allowed her mind to fall in deep spiral of contemplation. After struggling for a short while, Hikari resolved to strengthen her determination to keep her promise in order to prevent hurting Takeru. With her newly empowered resolve, she decided to apologize for her unkind words and agree to Takeru's date offer. Slowly, she got off from her bed and directed her legs towards his room. Knowing that the night was deep, she leaned softly against the door to check if he was awake. Unfortunately, what came from behind his door was blissful silence indicating that he was already asleep. Hikari became distressed to have lost another opportunity to apologize due to her indecisiveness and lack of courage. A short moment later, she returned to her room weakly, troubled by the fact that she might not be able to find again the courage to speak her mind. She lied down on her bed, wallowing in negative emotions until darkness greeted her eyes and embraced her to slumber slowly. Before falling into sweet oblivion, she pleaded the one who always helped her until he parted her world.

'I'm sorry for needing you even when you're gone, but please help me, Takeru.'

Along with the final echo of her deceased dear one's name, the shield of black clouds cracked, allowing a thin ray of the moonlight to permeate through. Accompanying the lonesome silver ray were soft crystals of whiteness that slowly descended onto the ground like feathers. The often drenched city was finally visited with a different guest. The first flakes of pureness to touch the city were ones that gently touched Hikari's window. At that moment, the sole source of light and darkness harmonized perfectly, giving the snowflakes that visited her window with pure sapphire glow. It was a spectacle viewable only from her window at that one instance. Seconds later, the feathery crystals faded away along with the beautiful radiance. Though the snows continued to visit after, the sapphire glow never returned after.
