By Thursday of the week the detectives had wrapped up the case. They had found DNA evidence on Kathy Simmons' body and although the suspect, Philip Martin, continued to deny that the murder of the two school girls had anything to do with him, the team was confident that they had enough evidence to convict him. The team had cleared Donna Kerry, Mr Martin's girlfriend and the girls' teacher. However, everyone knew that her life and career would never be the same. She would have to live with the fact that the man she loved had murdered one of her students.
Captain Donald Cragen walked into the bullpen dressed rather smartly at 1:30pm.
'Anyone ready to do this?' The rest of his team all looked at him with sadness in their faces.
'Can anyone ever be ready to do this when the victim is so young?'
The team had all been notified about the funeral of Kathy Simmons and each of them had decided to attend the service to get some form of closure. It wasn't often that the team attended the funerals of the victims they worked with but when the victims were so young sometimes it helped the team to move forward.
Amanda had volunteered to stay behind and man the office. She knew someone had to so she took it upon herself to make it easier on the rest of the team. She wasn't really one for funerals, especially for someone so young.
'I know but are we ready to go?'
All the team got up and grabbed their jackets and headed towards the door. Cragen turned to Amanda and gave her a nod before following his team out the door.
The team was silent as the journeyed towards the church. They were all lost in their own thoughts. When they arrived at the church the team slowly exited the vehicle and started towards the church. They hung back and allowed all the other mourners to enter the church before they did.
The service was heart retching but finally the service came to a close and people started to leave. Olivia remained in her seat. She sat with her head down, thinking about the case as well as everything that had happened over the past few months. She was so lost in her own thoughts that she didn't hear Sarah and her mother approach her.
'Detective Benson?'
'Sarah. Sorry I didn't see you there. How are you doing?'
'Okay.' The young girl said softly
'How are you doing?' Asked Mrs Bell.
'Okay.' Olivia copied Sarah's answer.
'Mom said you've closed the case.'
'Yes, Sarah. We believe we have enough evidence to take the case to trial and win. You don't ever have to worry about Mr. Martins hurting you or anyone again.'
Suddenly Olivia found herself enveloped in a hug.
'Thank you detective Benson.' Sarah whispered into her ear.
Olivia walked out with Sarah and Mrs Bell and then finally rejoined her squad.
